Improving Curriculum for Saskatchewan Students

Our government recently announced the creation of a financial literacy curriculum for students across Saskatchewan. For the first time, students will be able to use financial literacy as a credit towards their graduation.

Students taking these classes will learn the basics of personal finances, and why it is important to have that knowledge as they get closer to adulthood.

The curriculum for these classes will be written soon, with full implementation in our schools by September 2019.

The Government of Saskatchewan has also taken steps to equip children with more knowledge and skills in coding and robotics to help prepare them for emerging careers in science, mathematics, engineering and technology. The future will be even more dependent on technology and computing, so the curriculum in our schools should reflect that, and help our growing tech sector here at home.

Helping High School Graduates with Post-Secondary Education Costs

Another example of our commitment to the future of our students and our province is the Saskatchewan Advantage Scholarship (SAS). The scholarship is expected to help over 21,000 Saskatchewan students reduce their tuition costs this year.

The SAS provides eligible high school grads up to $500 per year towards tuition at post-secondary institutions in the province. Since the program was introduced in 2012, nearly 90,000 scholarships have been awarded to support more than 40,000 students.

Over the past ten years, the province has invested close to $8.4 billion in postsecondary education and student supports. This includes the Graduate Retention Program which provides income tax credits of up to $20,000 for graduates who live and work in Saskatchewan.

During a decade of growth, more and more students found opportunity to stay in Saskatchewan for work, to further their education, to start their careers, raise their families and build a life. The growth of our province continues today with our population increasing by 13,410 people over the past year. This marks 47 consecutive quarters of population growth and shows a correlation between the abundance of MARTENSVILLE - WARMAN opportunities in Saskatchewan and people making the decision to settle here.

Saskatchewan continues to see growth in our population drive growth in our Warman Plaza economy.

Manufacturing sales are up 5.7 per cent this month compared to last and our Phone: 306-242-0881 forestry industry is emerging as one of the province’s strongest growth sectors.

Prices for all forest products were very strong in 2017, reaching their highest levels since 2005. Prices are forecast to remain high over the next several years, largely due to strong demand from major export markets. The sector supports a total of more than 8,400 jobs, approximately 30 per cent of which are held by Indigenous people. Full development of the sector has the potential to generate more than $2 billion annually in forest products sales and support a total of more than 13,000 jobs.

NDP Proposing New Spending & New Taxes

So far this spring, the new leader of the NDP has shown a shocking lack of support for Saskatchewan jobs. Ryan Meili recently described Saskatchewan’s fight against the Trudeau carbon tax as a “costly and pointless crusade.” What is “costly and pointless” is a carbon tax that would increase costs for families and the industries that drive our economy while doing nothing to reduce global emissions.

Your Saskatchewan Party government has a plan to balance the budget and keep our economy strong. In contrast, Ryan Meili and the NDP have a plan to add $2.5 billion in new spending each and every year. While they have promised to increase income tax and stand ready to force a carbon tax on Saskatchewan, it’s not clear how they intend to pay for their reckless and runaway spending.

While the NDP is waving the white flag and clearing the path for a carbon tax, their refusal to acknowledge the costs of their irresponsible spending is a prescription for economic disaster. This is weak leadership and it proves that Ryan Meili and the NDP are still completely out-of-touch with reality, the needs of our economy and the priorities of Saskatchewan people.

THIS WEEK IN SPORTS

With the NHL regular season wrapping up on Sunday, there is still quite a bit to be decided. The only sure things are that Washington has locked up first in the Metropolitan Division and Vegas is number one in the Pacific. Other than that it’s going to come down to the final days to see who plays who. For the only two Canadian teams in the playoffs it looks pretty certain that Toronto will play either Tampa Bay or Boston in the first round and many Leafs fans are hoping for Tampa. I agree, Boston is NOT who you want to play in the first round because even if you do come out with a series win it will be hard fought and players will be very fatigued. For the Winnipeg Jets there are many different ways it could play out. If things stay where they are now, they would play the Minnesota Wild, but they could also end up playing Colorado, St. Louis, LA, or Anaheim. I don’t think there are any great options for the Jets, but they will have home ice advantage for round one and that is huge in Winnipeg. Some teams still looking to get into the playoffs are the Florida Panthers who are five points back of New Jersey for the final Wild Card spot in the East, and the St. Louis Blues are just one point back of Colorado for the final Wild Card in the West. It will definitely come down to the final games on Sunday to decide who’s in and who’s out.

The MLB regular season opened up last week and it took the Jays a couple days to get their stride. In their season opener the Jays were beat up by the Yankees as Giancarlo Stanton smashed two home runs in a 7-1 victory. In game two they solved Stanton and left him hitless but still fell short 4-2. The third game of the series is where things got exciting and the Jays pulled off their first win of the season thanks to Kevin Pillar stealing 2nd, 3rd, and home in the 8th inning to give Toronto the lead. They would add another to make the final score 5-3. Then in the fourth and final game of the series it was time for Toronto first baseman Justin Smoak to show his power. Smoak blasted two home runs including a goahead grand slam in the 8th inning as the Jays rolled to a 7-4 win and split the series with New York.

Health Care Workers Rank High Among Violence in Work Places Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

At some point in all of our lives ourselves, a family member, a close friend, or someone else that we care about requires medical care. During this time, one of the saving graces throughout such a stressful period is the amazing nurses that dedicate their lives to the care of others. Sadly, statistics state that a large percentage of these devoted individuals face both verbal and physical abuse within their jobs on a regular basis.

Tracy Zambory, President of the Saskatchewan Union of Nurses (SUN), spoke to the Martensville Messenger regarding these surprising statistics. “It is starting to seem that it should be the norm that if you work in healthcare, in mental health, home care, long term care, emergency room, etc. that being hit is just the price of business. We are saying that there is absolutely no way that anyone should come to work and expect to get hurt,” Zambory said. According to the International Council of Nurses, it is estimated that 70 to 80 percent of assaults do not get reported. The incidents that do get reported have led to healthcare being among the top sectors in which violence is a leading cause of injury. In 2016, the Saskatchewan Worker’s Compensation Board (WCB) provided statistics stating that registered nurses were among the top five occupations with injuries by violence, even coming in ahead of police officers. The report also stated that patients and residents of healthcare facilities were the most frequent inflictors of violence. For 2016, 8.84% of time loss injuries within the healthcare industry were caused by assaults, violent acts, attacks and harassment.

Alarmingly, these numbers also showed that 61% of surveyed nurses had experienced abuse, harassment or assault that year and that 1 in 3 registered nurses within the province had been physically assaulted by a patient, and more than half experienced emotional abuse.

These statistics are not something that SUN wants to see continue, and they are working hard to ensure steps are taken to prevent incidents such as these from taking place. “We want to ensure that through a collaboration with the new Saskatchewan Health Authority that we can start having open and honest dialogue about what is happening in the workplace, what we can do together to actually ensure that these kinds of attacks are a thing of the past, and we really think that we have some good recommendations about how we can prevent this from continuing,” Zambory added.

Recently, there was a violent incident that took place at the Dube Centre in Saskatoon, which many people heard about via social media. This incident sparked interest into the violence that nurses face on a day to day basis, but unfortunately, occurrences such as that one are not isolated. If a violent situation does take place, SUN currently has language within their collective agreement that triggers actions that take place immediately to ensure that those involved are properly taken care of. In addition to what is already in place, SUN is looking to implement long term strategies to help avoid the situations from happening entirely. “We are finding that some members are being instructed not to say anything if an incident does happen, and that if they are going to work in a certain area, that this is what can be expected. We have seen job postings that actually state that violence should be expected. We say absolutely not. Nobody should expect to get hurt when they go to work. We cannot tolerate that as SUN and we shouldn’t tolerate it as a public either.

That is no way to think that a vibrant, well run health care system in this province should run,” added Zambory.

One of the recommendations that SUN has included is ensuring there are appropriate staffing levels and staff mix on all shifts within units. “This does not necessarily mean there needs to be more staff hired, we just mean that there needs to be a really strong look at the patient needs on that unit for us to decide what the appropriate number of staffing is and we need to be able to look at the ‘junior/senior mix’, so that we have enough senior staff who are well acquainted with the patient population and who understand what it means if there is a potential for violence. That doesn’t mean because there is a potential for violence, you should automatically assume you are going to get hit, that means that we are smart as workers and as management to realize that the potential is there and that we have all the proper checks and balances in place,” Zambory said.

Another recommendation is ensuring that all staff that comes into these units are properly oriented, educated and that they have a supportive environment that they can work in. Part of this is working to ensure that there are proper protocols in place, being prepared for the situations that could transpire and how to work together to stop it before it can actually occur. “We need to make sure that there is the appropriate care plans put in place so that when a patient is admitted into the ward or into homecare, that we have been able to take the time to prepare a plan so that we can understand this persons background, that we have had the time to sit down and create a holistic plan for someone, whether they have the potential for violence or not. This will help to understand what it is they need, what it is they may want and how they may react to certain situations.

That is what a proper care plan does,” explained Zambory.

She also stated that the province is currently running 20% over capacity in health care facilities, which can lead to the potential for some issues.

The Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions implemented a Plan to Stop Violence in the Health Care Sector for 2017-2018 and within this plan they highlight various steps that can be taken to help provide a safer environment for both workers and patients. Some of these steps include; - Identifying barriers, enablers, and potential police and legislative levers.

- Working with member organization to strengthen and improve OH&S legislation so as to create safe workplace standards for health care workplaces.

- Develop and deliver a communications strategy to bring national attention to the issue of violence against nurses.

- Host a national roundtable on violence in healthcare.

- Conduct a national survey to obtain data on workplace violence from all provinces.

- Develop and Work with member organizations to ensure meaningful and consistent enforcement of OH&S legislation and consistent reporting, as well as strong language around the prevention of violence & bullying in health care workplaces, through risk assessments, education, training and emergency preparedness.

- Lobby for memorandums of agreement (with the Crown and police) to improve the process of investigating workplace safety incidents and the subsequent laying of criminal charges against patients who assault nurses.

- Lobby for charges to be laid under the federal Bill C-45 (The “Westray Bill”) for organizations and individuals who fail to ensure the safety of workers and the public.

- Lobby for amendments to the federal Criminal Code (section 269.01) to require a court to consider the fact that the victim of an assault is a health care worker to be an aggravating circumstance for the purposes of sentencing.

- Lobby to include health care workers and physicians in the PTSD presumptive legislation framework federally.

- Develop a national violence toolkit highlighting best practices in health care sectors.

This issue is not something that is occurring just within our province, or even within our country, violence within healthcare is a worldwide issue that is taking place.

In the CFNU ‘Enough is Enough: Safe Workplaces for All’ report, they state that physical violence was most prevalent in emergency departments, geriatric and psychiatric units.

They also note that this kind of violence has a cascading effect, impacting the psychological and physical wellbeing of health care staff, their job motivation, compromising the quality of care, and leading to health care sector financial losses.

Currently, Saskatchewan has a Provincial Violence Prevention Framework strategy in place through the Saskatchewan Association of Safe Workplaces and Health that is looking into developing strategies on how to avoid violent occurrences. One of these methods includes a tick sheet that describes potential violent situations, and by filling in the sheet, you can see that there is a patient that may perhaps require additional focus to ensure that people are kept safe. “The whole idea behind this is to be able to circumvent something at the front end, rather than trying to clean up at the back end, which is kind of where we are now, and hopefully we can get this turned around and we can start working in a collaborative, proactive way to ensure that people are safe. At the end of the day, this is all about how we can best serve the patients of this province and when we have the proper protocols in place, when we have appropriate staffing levels, proper orientation, this can benefit not just the worker, but the patient as well, and that’s truly what is important.”

Lane Usage During Spring Thaw

The City of Martensville encourages residents, for which their lane is a secondary means of access to their property, to limit their usage during the spring thaw period. Heavy or repetitive vehicle usage during spring thaw and wet conditions can cause further rutting and reduce drainage. This limits the ability of crews to conduct maintenance on the lanes in a timely manner and increases the amount of materials and time required to reshape lanes.

The skating rink stands were full as Martensville residents came out to see the talents of the Martensville Skating Club at their annual carnival on Sunday, March 25. This year’s theme was “Around the World”, as skaters danced and skated on their journey around the world. The rink was decorated with flags from each country as the crowd heard routines from “Walk Like an Egyptian,” to “Tie Me Kangaroo Down” from Australia. The Starskaters opened the carnival to “I’ve Been Everywhere” and wrapped things up with a great group skate to “This Land is Your Land”. There were also fun routines to Rio from Brazil, Madagascar, from Africa and Austria’s “Sound of Music.” Alexa Bast, a guest skater for the carnival, skated a beautiful routine to “Havanna.” It was a fun carnival with something for everyone. The coaches were thanked for their efforts and the Canskate and Starskate awards were given out for the season. All of the skaters did their finale skate as fans showed their appreciation for all their wonderful performances.

The club also acknowledged the coaching staff of Danny James, Tayler Belosowsky and Nicole Gryba for their efforts and guidance over the past season. The Skating Executive and parents of the skaters put in countless hours to make the carnival a success. The club also paid a tribute to the Starskaters who assisted with the Canskate program. Without their help the program could not run. They also wanted to acknowledge and thank Jason Grybafor for his wonderful job as carnival emcee and Tesia Belosowsky for the music. Special mention goes to Heather King who received the SaskEnergy Champion Volunteer award. The carnival was a big success once again.

Avoid Pesky Tent Caterpillars By Taking Saskatchewan Steps Now Had More Than

As many of us remember, and cringe while doing so, past summer was one filled with pesky tent caterpillars.

April’s Traffic Safety Spotlight reminds drivers to #SlowDown before fines go up May 1

In 2016, there were more than 124,000 convictions related to speeding in Saskatchewan. In a province with just over 800,000 licenced drivers, that's about one speeding ticket for every 6.5 drivers.

You’re probably thinking to yourself, “Whoa, that sounds like a lot of speeding tickets.”

We agree. Excessive speed is one of the leading factors in traffic-related deaths and injuries. In 2016, 22 people died in speedrelated crashes on Saskatchewan roads. Another 579 were injured. That’s why SGI and police across Saskatchewan have made speeding and aggressive driving the focus of April’s Traffic Safety Spotlight. And, with speeding fines set to go up on May 1, it’s the perfect time to remind drivers to #SlowDown.

“Posted speed limits are not suggestions; they tell you how fast you’re legally allowed to drive,” said Penny McCune, COO of the Auto Fund. “The best way to avoid a ticket? Don’t speed.

And remember that those speed limits are for ideal conditions, which is not something we experience every day of the year in Saskatchewan.”

Here’s a tip: you don’t need to speed.

Public roads are not racetracks. There’s no checkered flag, and you’re not Danica Patrick or Dale Earnhardt Jr.

There are a number of different speedrelated offences under the Traffic Safety Act, and fines vary based on the offence and speed travelled (e.g. speeding in school zones or in construction zones with workers present carry much heftier fines). The cost of the ticket goes up for every kilometre per hour you’re over the limit.

Right now, exceeding the speed limit by 20 km/h on a regular street or highway triggers a total fine of $130, including the Victims of Crime surcharge and km/h charges. In a school zone, 20 km/h over the limit costs you $230. If you speed past workers in a 60 km/h orange zone, you’ll shell out $330 for going 80, and $530 for going 100!

And, as of May 1, those tickets will cost you even more. The base fine on all speeding tickets will increase by $30 and the km/h charge for travelling in excess of the posted speed will double.

Once hatched, they typically feed for approximately 6 weeks. In order to help prevent the caterpillars from hatching, throughout fall, winter and spring, residents can remove the egg bands from the trees surrounding their property and dispose of them prior to hatching.

Martensville Farmers Market Preparing For 2018 Season Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Although it may seem to be awhile before we start making plans for spring, the organizers behind the Martensville Farmers Market are in full swing making arrangements for this year. The market will once again take place Thursday’s from 3pm to 7pm and will be located within the Martensville Curling Rink, providing an array of homemade and homegrown products.

Currently, the Farmer’s Market is set to have vendors from previous years returning, with others on a waiting list. “We have a wait list so as not to saturate certain products and give us the physical room to offer a wide variety of interesting products. Although we are always on the lookout for new, exciting products,” organizer Krystal Selinger said. The market is scheduled to begin mid-June, with the final market being held on August 30th. Plans for a grand opening are already in motion, and those looking for more details can follow the ‘Martensville Farmers Market’ page on Facebook for updates.

This year marks the fifth year for the local Farmers Market, and Selinger has been a part of the organization since it first began, the first year as a vendor, and after that as both a vendor and organizer. “I truly enjoy my time at the market and the vendors are very much a ‘family’ that is getting bigger every year. We have many children who have started to create their own crafts and we encourage vendors to bring their children with them. We have been very pleased with the amount of vendors and products we have been able to offer each year,” explained Selinger.

Throughout the past five seasons, attendance has been on the rise each year, although they are always looking for ways to spread the word about the market and encourage new customers to come and see what the market has to offer. “We have evening hours to accommodate those who work and I think people will be happy to know that we are a 100% non-profit organization with all of our

vendor fees and sponsorship donations being put back into our great market to offer even more fun events for our great community.” Without the support of the community and sponsors, the market would be unable to continue providing homemade options to the local residents. Selinger wanted to thank some of the biggest sponsors the market has had in previous years; including, the City of Martensville, the Martensville Messenger and Lakeview Insurance.

For those looking for more information, they can attend the information night, which will take place on Sunday, April 15th at 7pm in the Curling Rink. “The night is a basic information night for anyone interested in being a part of the market as a vendor or supporter. The night is set up for us to connect with previous vendors, meet new ones and answer any questions people may have about the upcoming season,” Selinger explained. Anyone interested in becoming a vendor, the organizers recommend attending the meeting to find out specific details about the market, and to have the opportunity to provide the appropriate information regarding their business. Justin Trudeau is imposing a national carbon tax on Canadians.

According to his government’s own research, his carbon tax will add 11 cents per litre to the price of gasoline by 2022.

That’s outrageous.

It will make life far more expensive for everyday families.

Justin Trudeau keeps failing to deliver the relief he promised to Canadian families when he was running for Prime Minister.

The average family is already paying more than $800 extra per year in taxes because of his failure to keep spending under control.

Canadians have been let down.

But they can always count on Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives to give taxpayers a voice.

Whether or not you believe the carbon tax is wrong, let us accept one thing: There’s no doubt that it is legitimate for the federal government to tax us in this way.

We might not like the tax and we might not even be convinced that this particular carbon pricing tax will stay in the jurisdiction it is collected. We may even argue that it unfairly hurts resource-based jurisdiction like Saskatchewan even more than other places. These are all reasonable arguments, but it is unreasonable to argue the federal Liberal government doesn’t have the right to do this.

Ottawa has the right to tax and the only solution to any unpopular policy comes every four years at the polls.

Judging by recent federal government polling showing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as less popular than former Conservative Stephen Harper was at the same point in his mandate, it’s quite possible voters have already identified the solution to the carbon tax.

We also must recognize that the environment is a federal matter and it is legitimate for a federal government to address things hurting the environment like GHGs. Again, some will disagree that this is the right approach.

Some even argue GHG aren’t affecting the environment, but science has never been on their side.

Similarly, pipelines are also a matter well within the purview of federal jurisdiction. This makes perfect sense because issues like pipeline, rails and national highways cannot be left to one particular jurisdiction. It would be far too easy for one province to be tempted to overstep its bounds and impose unfair restrictions that unduly affect other provinces.

This is clearly the situation with the B.C. NDP’s government contemplation of blocking the $7.4-billion Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline. Designed to move bitumen from landlocked Alberta to port (Saskatchewan oil is less directly impacted), the clear wrong here is B.C. clearly overstepping provincial jurisdiction in a way that impacts other provinces. However, the other wrong here would be retaliatory trade action like the oil boycott contemplated by NDP Alberta Premier Rachel Notley and clearly endorsed

by Saskatchewan Party Premier Scott Moe.

Instead, both premiers should be working with Trudeau to ensure that the Prime Minister does his job and comes down on the B.C. NDP for overstepping its authority.

That’s the only way things can work properly in a country as large and diverse as ours.

You may have been surprised how quickly Moe came to the defense of Alberta, given Alberta-Saskatchewan hostilities on beer and Alberta license plates at construction sites in this province, but Moe did not mince words in his support:

"If the fuel tanks start to run dry because Premier Notley has turned the tap off, it won't be Saskatchewan filling them up," Moe told the CBC. One might wonder why Moe would be so worked up over the Alberta bitumen, but we need to recognize how one thing in this country impacts the other.

If Alberta bitumen is moved by pipeline, we become less dependent on the railways which are already struggling to move Saskatchewan refined oil products, potash and agricultural products, Moe noted.

A debate that starts in one province and ends two provinces over on the West Coast does potentially impact rural Saskatchewan in a big way and in a landlocked province like ours that’s dependent on moving products to port, we can’t afford such a precedent. However, starting an interprovincial trade war - or even supporting one - isn’t an answer.

The problem has to be fixed by the federal government - the jurisdiction with the authority to fix it. We may not always like that the country works this way, but this is the only way the country can work.

Our Children & Electronic Screen Problem: Is it a New Disorder?

Many years ago after a family sat down for supper together, children would gravitate towards the outdoors, and you could hear the laughter and voices of children playing and learning how to be social with peers. Now the majority of our children are in a generation that revolves around their contact with smartphones, iPads, computers, PS3s, and Xboxes and this has become a form of a digital drug for many of our youth. Testing in the avenue of brain imaging has proven that this digital drug is affecting the brain’s frontal cortex which controls executive functioning, including impulse control in our children. It is performing in the same avenue as cocaine.

As reported by Victoria Dunckley, MD, an integrative child psychiatrist and author of the book, Reset Your Child’s Brain, technology is having a negative impact on our children’s brain health and development.

“Electronic Screen Syndrome (ESS), is the result of overexposure to screens in the forms of video game systems, tablets, and smartphones. Electronics can overstimulate and deregulate a child’s nervous system. The added overstimulation and stress cause children to have issues with mood, focus, sleep, and behavior.” (Dunckley)

It has been observed in studies that children with electronic screen syndrome suffer from sensory overload, decrease in sound sleeps, and a hyper-aroused nervous system. Some symptoms noticed in children with electronic screen syndrome is symptoms related to mood, anxiety, cognition, behavior, or social interactions that cause significant impairment in school, at home, or with peers. Typical signs/symptoms mimic chronic stress and include irritable, depressed or labile mood, excessive tantrums, low frustration tolerance, poor self-regulation, disorganized behavior, oppositional-defiant behaviors, poor sportsmanship, social immaturity, poor eye contact, insomnia/non-restorative sleep, learning difficulties, and poor short-term memory. There is stress on the nervous system from the ongoing use of electronic screens causing difficulties with self-regulation and stress management.

ESS (Electronic Screen Syndrome) can be described as a disorder of dysregulation.

Dysregulation can be defined as an inability to balance one’s mood, attention, or level of arousal in an aspect appropriate to one’s environment. Children and adult’s interaction with screens shifts the nervous system into fight-or-flight mode which leads to dysregulation and disorganization of various biological systems. Sometimes this stress response is instantaneous and obvious (say while playing an action video game), and other times the response is fainter and may happen only after a certain amount of recurrence (say while texting). In review, the interactions with screen devices are causing our children to become overstimulated in problematic avenues.

What Can We Do? 1. Train delayed gratification.

Make them wait!!! It is ok to have “I am bored“ time – this is the first step to creativity Gradually increase the waiting time between “I want” and “I get.”

Avoid technology use in cars and restaurants, and instead, teach them waiting while talking and playing games.

2. Don’t be afraid to set the limits. Kids need limits to grow happy and healthy!!

Make a schedule for meal times, sleep times, technology time.

Think of what is GOOD for them - not what they WANT/DON’T WANT. They are going to thank you for that later on in life.

Parenting is a hard job.

3. Teach your child to do monotonous work from early years as it is the foundation for future “workability.”

Folding laundry, tidying up toys, hanging clothes, unpacking groceries, setting the table, making lunch, unpacking their lunch box, making their bed.

4. Have fun with your children.

Read aloud, wrestle with your kids, make a Mexican or Italian meal together, do a family game night or a treasure hunt in the house or yard. Push the table aside and dance with them, laugh about what they did when they were really little, take walks and look at the clouds!

Syl Serblowski, a familiar face in Martensville, has been involved with this community for a great number of years. This dedication was acknowledged at the March 20th City Council meeting when Serblowski was presented with the Canada 150 Award.

The award was presented by Mayor Kent Muench on behalf of Carlton Trail – Eagle Creek Member of Parliament Kelly Block.

Serblowski, who has been a resident of Martensville for the past 46 years, has been an active member of the Martensville & District Lions Club for the past 39 years, contributing to many local events, charities, organizations and more through his efforts. Additionally, Serblowski has been involved with Martensville Town Council, the Martensville Library Board, the local Housing Authority and has been an active member of the New Horizon’s Senior Centre.

Through the years, Syl has also been nominated and awarded for both Martensville Volunteer or the Year in 2015 and Citizen of the Year in 2005 and 2006.

Suspicious Vehicle Reported in Warman March 28, 2018 at 10:20 p.m. Police received a complaint of a suspicious vehicle on the 400 block of 4th Street West in Warman.

A short time later, the caller reported that the vehicle had left the location before police arrived. There were no charges.

PROPERTY Police Investigate Martensville Hit & Run March 29, 2018 at 7:55 a.m. Police received a complaint of a hit and run to a vehicle on the 700 block of Reimer Road in Martensville. The caller reported that their vehicle was hit while parked outside of their residence.

Investigation into this matter is ongoing.

Warman Theft Investigated March 29, 2018 at 8:25 a.m. Police received a complaint of theft from a construction site near Warman. Police attended the scene and found that a number of items were taken from the site. Investigation into this matter is ongoing.

Vehicle Stolen Outside Martensville Business March 31, 2018 at 1:50

a.m. Police received a complaint of theft of a vehicle from a business in Martensville. The caller advised that they stopped at the business and when they returned to their vehicle it was no longer there. Investigation into this matter is ongoing and charges are pending.

No Charges Laid in Warman Threats March 29, 2018 at 9:55 a.m.

Police received a complaint of threats in Warman.

The caller reported that they were threatened by a 28 year old male from Warman. Police spoke with all parties involved and issued warnings to them to discontinue communication with each other. There were no charges.

Police Remove Hitch Hiker From Residence March 31, 2018 at 8:30 p.m.

Police received a request to remove an individual from a residence near Osler. The caller reported that they picked up a hitch hiker and took them back to their residence. They wanted police to attend to remove the 29 year old female from the residence. Police attended and removed the female and provided her a ride to a safe location in Saskatoon. There were no charges.

Concerned Citizen Fears for Children’s Safety April 1, 2018 at 3:20 p.m. Police received a complaint of kids on the ice in Kinsmen Park in Martensville. The caller was concerned for the kids as they felt the ice may be thin. Police attended the scene and did not locate anyone in the area. It did not appear as though the ice was thin. There were no charges.
