Local Athlete Strives For Success on the Slopes Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Stevie Robinson is no stranger to the slopes.

At 13 years old, she has already been mastering the sport of snowboarding for the past three years and is currently training with the Saskatchewan Snowboard Association Freestyle Development team. This year, Stevie competed in Slopestyle and Boardercross events.

At the age of 10, Stevie saw her cousin Hunter snowboarding and was immediately taken with the individual sport. That year, she decided to compete in her first competition and from there, took part in every competition available.

With heroes such as Mark McMorris and Spencer O’Brien, Stevie notes that she admires the boarders because, “they have both fought against challenges like health issues and growing up boarding in Saskatchewan.”

From December 2018 to March 2019, Stevie participated in the Saskatchewan Snowboard Association Provincial Point Series and throughout the season, earned her way onto the podium for each event in the series. Through dedication and hard work, Stevie finished second overall with numerous first and second place finishes throughout the year.

“I just do it because snowboarding makes me happy and every competition that I go to makes me try something new. I want to be able to back country snowboard in different mountain ranges building my own jumps with a group of friends,” Stevie said.

Throughout the 2018/2019 season, Stevie competed in several events and throwdowns where she was the only female boarder competing.

On April 1st, the Canada Snowboard and World Series point totals were released and Stevie came out in 28th place and was ecstatic to see her name among the names of her heroes and Olympians.

Stevie’s very proud mother Chandra noted that her daughter accomplished this goal all while being captain of multiple school sports, maintaining an impressive average in school, working part time and being a productive member of the family. “We could not be more proud,” Chandra stated.

City Receives New Building Canada Grant For Wastewater Treatment And Water Distribution

Upgrades to the City’s wastewater treatment and water distribution systems will soon be possible thanks to a $20.16 million grant the City will receive through the New Build Canada Fund. The award was announced by Minister Warren Kaeding in Regina.

Under the New Building Canada Fund, approved projects are funded one-third by the Government of Canada, one-third through the Provincial Government and the final onethird at the municipal level.

The funding will allow the City to upgrade its existing lagoons, build a new gravity conveyance system to connect to the City of Saskatoon’s sanitary sewer system, and upgrade the existing sewage lift station. In addition, upgrades to the water supply reservoir and pumping stations and a new water main will connect to Saskatoon’s drinking water supply system.

“This announcement today is very welcome news for everyone in Martensville,” said Scott Blevins, City Manager. “With an anticipated doubling of our population by 2040, we must continue to upgrade all of our infrastructure systems and this project will allow us to upgrade essential services, increase the overall capacity of the water and waste water system and provide a better opportunity to anticipate and plan for further growth.”

Due to ongoing growth resulting in increasing pressures on the holding capacity and treatment ability of the current lagoon system, the City has been examining the best options for maintaining and upgrading the City’s existing water and wastewater infrastructure for a number of years. In addition to taking interim steps to deal with capacity issues, the City had begun planning for a large capital upgrade and renewal project. “The basis of this project started in 2014 with a Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Saskatoon to provide wastewater services to Saskatoon,” said Blevins, City Manager. “By connecting to the Saskatoon waste water system, we can meet future capacity while moving to an upgraded system with a higher environmental standard.”

In respect to drinking water, the City currently purchases treated drinking water from the Saskatchewan Water Corporation, which is provided to them from the City of Saskatoon. Under this project water will be purchased and provided directly from the City of Saskatoon.

With funding in place now of $20.16 million, the City will fund its portion of the project through dedicated reserve funds and municipal financing. With initial engineering work already underway, the City anticipates upgrades to the lift station will be completed in the coming months. The entire project should be completed by 2022.

Erratic Driver Found to Be Suffering From Medical Issue March 25, 2019 at 5:55 p.m. Police received a complaint of an erratic driver on Highway 12 near Martensville. The caller advised that the vehicle was all over the road and going in and out of the ditch. Police attended the location and found that the 32 year old male driver of the vehicle from Martensville was suffering from a medical issue. The male was transported to hospital by EMS for follow up. There were no charges or injuries.

Ticket Issued in Martensville Accident March 28, 2019 at 7:30 a.m.

Police received a complaint of a two vehicle accident in Martensville. Police attended the scene and issued a ticket to the 18 year old male driver of one of the vehicles for driving with an obstructed windshield. The vehicle required towing from the scene. There were no injuries.

Moose Causes Multi Vehicle Collision on Highway 12 March 31, 2019 at 10:55 p.m. Police received a complaint of a three vehicle accident on Highway 12 north of Martensville. Police attended the scene and found that the three vehicles had struck a moose. An 84 year old male driver of one of the vehicles received minor injuries. All three vehicles required towing from the scene.

There were no charges.

Warman RCMP are advising residents of Martensville that “Coffee with a Cop” will be taking place at Tim Horton’s in Martensville on April 23rd at 10am.

RCMP members will be in attendance for residents to have a chance to ask questions and get to know the police officers in your city. Everyone is invited to attend.

Police Attend Martensville Business Disturbance March 30, 2019 at 10:15 p.m. Police received a complaint of a disturbance at a business in Martensville. Police attended the business and arrested a 28 year old male from Martensville and a 28 year old male from North Battleford.

They were taken home to prevent further problems. There were no charges or injuries.

Section 192(4) of the Traffic Safety Act refers: willfully deface or alter a licence plate. The fine for this infraction is $ 125.00

Indoor Water Conservation Tips

April Council Meeting Dates

• When you want a drink, don’t let the water run until it is cold. Instead, refrigerate a jug of tap water and save 7-12 litres of water per minute.

• Don’t let the tap run when rinsing dishes or washing fruit and vegetables and save 7-12 litres of water per minute.

• Don’t pre-rinse dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. Instead, scrape off food first using a spatula. Soak very dirty pans and dishes before washing.

All Regular Council Meetings and Committee of the Whole Meetings are open to the public. All meetings commence at 5PM. Those wishing to address or do a presentation to Council must be placed on the agenda. • Repair any leaks. Turn faucets off firmly. Check and replace any worn out fixtures, washers, O-rings and hose connections.

Drinking Water Quality and Compliance 2018 Notice to Consumers

• Avoid using garbage disposals. Disposals require lots of water to operate properly. Instead, start a compost pile.

The Water Security Agency and the Ministry of Environment requires that at least once each year waterworks owners provide notification to consumers of the quality of water produced and supplied as well as information on the performance of the waterworks.

•

Save as much as 10 litres of water per minute with a low-flow showerhead.

The 2018 Annual Notice to Consumers is available on Martensville.ca under Public Notices. If you have questions about the report or water quality assurance, please contact Martensville City Hall.

• Replace an old toilet with a water-efficient model and save as much as 14 litres of water per flush and 70 litres per person, per day

• Don’t overfill and fill less than a full bath. Better yet, you’ll save water by taking a short shower instead.

• Check for leaks in your toilet by adding a few drops of food coloring to the tank.

Coloring will appear in the toilet bowl if it’s leaking.

Reminder- Ban on Pruning of Elm Trees in Effect To control the spread of Dutch Elm Disease (DED), Provincial regulations prohibit pruning of elm trees from April 1-August 31 each year. This is a critical step in ensuring DED does not spread. Please contact us if you suspect you may have a diseased tree or if you have questions about the health of our local trees.

• Run the washing machine only when it’s fully loaded. Each load you eliminate saves 70-190 litres of water.

Check washing machine hoses for cracks that could result in leaks.

• Use your water meter to check for hidden water leaks. Read the water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, there is a leak.

Provincial Budget Strikes the Right Balance

Members of the Legislative Assembly have been debating the 2019-20 Provincial Budget – a responsible and sustainable plan to balance the budget this year, and in the years to come.

Your Saskatchewan Party MLAs are standing up for Saskatchewan by putting forward and passing a budget that strikes the right balance between keeping taxes low and providing quality services for our children, families, and seniors; important investments in urban and rural Saskatchewan; and for building our economy and creating jobs.

One of the highlights in this year’s budget is our commitment to improving mental health services across the province. Funding for targeted mental health and addictions initiatives increases by nearly $30 million, representing the largest ever commitment to mental health services in Saskatchewan.

Another highlight is a $100,000 commitment to Legions and ANAVETS branches across Saskatchewan to assist the important work of supporting veterans and honouring the memory of our fallen heroes. Details on the program and application process are being finalized with guidelines to be announced later this spring.

The new provincial budget is the right balance to keep our province growing and our economy strong. China Canola Crisis Requires Co-Operative Approach

You’ve likely read this in this space before, but it sure bears repeating right now: As a commodity trading province like ours is often at the mercy of world politics.

It’s easy to get caught up in local, provincial or even national politics, thinking that it’s the only thing that’s important, but China’s sanction against Western Canadian canola now serves as prime example of how we need to understand how the world stage can directly and severely impact us right down on the farm in Saskatchewan.

We need to learn something else if we are to effectively handle this event: We need to understand political differences have to be put aside in order to develop the most reasoned and effective strategy to deal with issues.

More local bickering isn’t helpful.

After restricting the purchase of canola from Canada’s largest grain company, Richardson International, China moved last week to ban Canadian exports from all Canadian exporters, according to the Canadian Canola Council of Canada.

China cited the present of “hazardous pests” in its decision to stop purchasing from Richardson. No tests confirmed the presence of any pests, fuelling long-held suspicions that this is about something very different. “We have been seeing this develop over a period of time as opposed to the decision that was made earlier in China to impose a restriction on one company,” Jim Everson, the Canadian Council’s president, told the Western Producer.

Many believe that this is directly related to the detention of Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou who was detained in Vancouver in January at the request of the United States.

Currently, China buys 40 per cent of Canada’s canola seed and oil and meal exports - a massive $3.6 billion in 2018 the Western Canadian economy; however, an important question remains: Just what is the best way to address it?

Unhelpful would be to localize this international political fight by making it all Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the other failings of his federal Liberal government.

So far, that’s exactly what the Saskatchewan Party has avoided doing. “There’s going to be a point where the prime minister is going to need to be directly engaged,” said Trade and Export Development Jeremy Harrison told reporters last week. “Right now, we’re going to be working with the national government to try and find a resolution because this is such an important economic issue for our province.”

The Government of Saskatchewan appreciates the commitment and sacrifices of Canadian Armed Forces veterans and will be offering hunting and angling licences at no cost to recognize their contributions. The new initiative applies to veterans who were honourably discharged from the Armed Forces and is available to Saskatchewan and Canadian resident veterans. More information on this opportunity, including eligibility requirements and how to apply, can be found at saskatchewan.ca or by calling the Ministry of Environment Inquiry Centre at 1-800-567-4224.

Park Campsite Reservations Open April 2

Melting snow and rising temperatures give us reason to believe we’ve put a long and cold winter behind us. It also means it’s time to start planning for recreation and relaxation in Saskatchewan Provincial Parks. Campsite reservations for the 2019 season begin on April 2 for seasonal bookings, April 4 for group camping sites, and April 8 to 18 for nightly sites.

Due to high demand for these sites, a queuing system will be used to ensure a fair process. For a smooth booking process, campers are urged to create a new account and become familiar with the new system prior to reservations opening. All reservation information, including tutorials for creating a new account, are available at saskparks.com by clicking “Important 2019 Camping and Reservation Info”.

For a dyed-in-the-wool partisan like Harrison, a bipartisan, multi-government-level co-operative approach isn’t easy. Nor is working closely with federal Trudeau government appealing to a lot of Western Canadian farmers want to do. It may seem, easier to fall into line with federal Conservative leader Andrew Scheer and just add the China canola crisis to Trudeau’s ever-growing list of failings, but even if the canola mess could be strictly blamed on Trudeau ; which, in this case, it really can’t; this would be an unproductive approach.

Because of this, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe also recognized the need to sheath his sword last week and have what seemed to be a productive strategic telephone

conversation with the Prime Minister on the matter. “I have every reason to believe he is taking this seriously,” Moe said of Trudeau.

Like Harrison and Everson, Moe agreed the emphasis right now has to be on high-level nation-to-nation talks and demonstrated research science to debunk Chinese allegations about Canadian canola safety.

As Harrison put it: “We’re going to be supportive of efforts they make, but we think that they do need to be engaged at the diplomatic and political level on this, and continuing to engage at the scientific level as well,” he said.

Really, it’s what we should do if we are serious about resolving this mess.

The Warman Lions, coached by Todd Lacoursierre, kept their winning season going as they headed into the Female Peewee A provincial playoffs. They travelled to Weyburn for game one and won a close one 5-4. They faced Weyburn on home ice Sunday and never looked back as they won 5-2, taking the overall two game, total point series 9-7. The Lions are the new Female Peewee A Provincial champions. This was icing on the cake to a great season for the first year Lions.

The league final saw them pitted against the Regina Rebels. The series went to three games with the Stars defeating the Rebels 3 to 2 in game three to become league champions.

They will play the Westman Wildcats in the Western Regionals on April 5 in Saskatoon at the Merlis Belsher Arena. Puck drop is 7:30.

The Martensville Marauders Midget B’s came out on top to bring home the SMHA City Championship. The team played an exciting final game on Thursday, March 21st against the Renegade Ice Men. They defeated their opponents 6-4.

The players on the team consist of: Adlai Muench, Brady Ayotte, Colton Zimmer, Colton Don, Ethan Tellier, Ethan Michaud, Ethan Hopper, Hunter Slywka, Jayce Kallis, Jericho Fernuk, Jonathan Hanson-Wiebe, Josh PikeKlisowsky, Joshua Dyck, Kalen Muench, Keenan Unser, Tristan Kasper. Missing; Colby Ackerman. Coaches Shawn Klisowsky, Dan Hooper, Al Zimmer and Darren Fernuk.

THIS WEEK IN SPORTS

Headed into the final weekend of the NHL regular season there are only a few things that are certain for the first round of playoffs. What we do know at this point is that in the East, the Boston Bruins will have home ice advantage in round one against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

As with past Toronto vs Boston series’ this is going to be an absolute battle. Boston won the season series between the teams 3-1 and outscored the Leafs 16-10 in those four games.

The other series we know is happening is in the West where San Jose will host the Vegas Golden Knights. The season series between these two is split with each of them taking two games. Both of the Golden Knights wins were blowouts (6-0, 7-3) while the Sharks had to grind for their victories (3-2, 4-3 OT). The most recent game between the Sharks and Knights set the stage for their series as tempers boiled over resulting in San Jose’s Joe Thornton and Vegas’s Ryan Reaves receiving fines during a scuffle.

Another likely playoff series that isn’t set in stone yet would be between the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins. New York is three points back of the Capitals for top spot in the Metro Division while Pittsburgh has a 3-point lead over the Blue Jackets who sit in the first Wild Card position. This would be another tight series as the teams split the four games they played during the regular season with two of the games needing overtime. The Penguins may have a slight advantage as they outscored New York 13-12 and won the most recent two games.

The only division that doesn’t have anything locked down is the Central. The Jets and Predators have been slipping while the Blues gained some ground. Winnipeg and Nashville are tied for first with 94 points and St. Louis is just 2 points behind them.

The same can be said for the Wild Card in each of the Conferences. The Tampa Bay Lightning have had the number one seed in the NHL for quite some time now and they may have to wait until the season’s final games before they know who they will match-up against in the first round. Columbus has the number one Wild Card spot in the East with 94 points, Carolina is right behind them in the number two spot with 93 points. The Montreal Canadiens are the only team outside of a playoff spot in the East that has not been eliminated. Montreal is one point back of Carolina for the second and final Wild Card spot.

The Western Conference Wild Card is where things get really tricky. At the time I am writing this, most teams have either three or four games remaining and there are still four teams sitting outside of the playoffs that have a shot at making the Wild Card. The teams that have the best shot right now are the Arizona Coyotes (84 points) and Minnesota Wild (81 points). They are chasing the Colorado Avalanche who sit in the final Wild Card spot with 85 points. Whoever gets that final Wild Card position will match-up with the Calgary Flames who clinched the best record in the Pacific Division and Western Conference with a 5-3 win over the San Jose Sharks on Sunday. The Flames are most likely going to have to wait until the final games are played out on Saturday before they know who they will be playing in the first round.

The skating rink stands were full as 400 people came out to see the talents of the Martensville Skating Club at their annual carnival on Sunday, March 24. This year’s theme was “Props to Us”, as 94 skaters danced and skated to songs with different props.

The Starskate group opened the carnival with a wonderful routine to the song “Razzle Dazzle” as the skaters came out with their top hats, tailcoats and canes. The rink was decorated with prop themes as the crowd heard routines from “Fishing in the Dark”, to “How Much is that Doggie in the Window?” The Precan skaters stole the show with their teddies skating to the “Teddy Bear Picnic”. The Starskaters rounded up the program with a glow in the dark number skated to the song “Fireflies”. It was a fun carnival with something for everyone.

The coaches were thanked for their efforts and the Canskate and Starskate awards were given out for the season. All of the skaters did their finale skate to “We are Family” as fans showed their appreciation for all their wonderful performances.

The winners of the Canskate awards were: Rising Star: Hailey Collins Canskate Awards: Reilly Bridgette, Hailey Green and Hannah Boyko The Starskate awards went to the following: Kelly Novakovski - Samantha Laughren Sportsmanship - Teah Lennea Program Assistant - Kiersten Skelton Most Improved - Morgan Redhead Coach's Choice - Tenley Jaeb

The club also acknowledged the coaching staff of Danny James and Nicole Gryba for their efforts and guidance over the past season. The Skating Executive and parents of the skaters put in countless hours to make the carnival a success. The club also paid a tribute to the Starskaters who assisted with the Canskate program. Without their help the program could not run.

Special mention went to Teah and Samantha who completed the Canskate coach training course. They also wanted to acknowledge and thank Jay Thomas for his great job Emceeing the carnival. Special thanks also to Tesia Belosowsky for her help with the music. The carnival was a big success once again.
