This is a Public Health Order and is subject to enforcement and fines.

Health officials strongly recommend wearing a non-medical mask anywhere outside the home.

Business Property Tax and Utility Update The City has re-implemented the suspension of interest on property taxes and utilies for commercial or industrial properties retroactive from November 2020 until July 31st, 2021.

COVID-19 Vaccine Update

Public notice is hereby given that the Council of the City of Martensville, pursuant to Section 207 of the Planning and Development Act, 2007, intends to consider a bylaw to adopt an Official Community Plan (OCP) No. 2-2020.

INTENT - The proposed Official Community Plan bylaw will establish municipal goals, objectives and policies relating to land use and development. This bylaw proposes to update the future land use map and current policies affected by the recent annexation, provincial legislative amendments, and City Master Plans. New sections include policies for reconciliation, climate change, financing growth, Sector and Concept Plans, and working within Saskatoon North Partnership for Growth (P4G). This amendment will also adopt the West Sector Plan as an appendix to the OCP. AFFECTED LAND - The proposed bylaw will affect all the property within the corporate boundaries of the City of Martensville.

2021 is a Revaluation Year - What Do You Need To Know About Your Assessment and Taxes?

There has been continued progression around the delivery of vaccines with the increase in number of vaccine clinics and eligibility for the public expanding as vaccine becomes administered and available.

The City and the Province set tax mill rates which are applied to the property assessment values to determine the tax levy for city and education property tax.

Commencing on April 1st the North Ridge Centre opened as an available vaccination centre.

2021 Assessment Notices will be mailed to all property owners April 30, 2021.

A comprehensive resource is available at https://www.saskatchewan.ca/COVID19-vaccine and includes information around vaccines as well as a gateway for online booking and what you should have ready prior to your vaccine.

Winds Contribute To Fire North Of 71st Street Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Smoke could be seen far and wide as firefighters from both the Saskatoon Fire Department and the Warman Fire Department battled a quick moving grass fire north of 71st Street on Monday, April 26th.

In a news release from the Saskatoon Fire Department at approximately 5pm, they received the first report of the grass fire at 1:38pm, dispatched apparatus, and received multiple calls through 9-1-1 indicating that the fire was getting larger.

“In total, four engine companies, two brush trucks, two water tankers and the Battalion Chief have been working to cut this fire off and suppress it,” the news release stated.

Both wind and dry conditions contributed to the fire’s ability to grow and travel. At the time of the news release, no structures had been involved.

2021 Big Game Draw Opens Online May 1

After a record-setting year for applications in 2020, Saskatchewan's big game draw is set to open for 2021 on May 1. Hunters have until 11:59 p.m. on May 25 to submit their online applications.

"The big game draw continues to be extremely popular with hunters in this province," Environment Minister Warren Kaeding said. "In 2020, the ministry received almost 115,000 applications and we anticipate another busy year."

While the draw opportunity is provided in anticipation of the fall hunting season, applicants should be aware of the unpredictable circumstances around COVID-19, and should be prepared to follow all public health orders.

"The ministry continues to work with the hunting community to improve the process and encourages all hunters to apply early," Kaeding said. "Game populations in many areas have been doing very well. This means that there will be increased hunting opportunities for elk, mule deer and white-tailed deer in certain zones."

The 2021 Big Game Draw Supplement provides Saskatchewan resident hunters with information on seasons and quotas for draw species, as well as advance notice of any changes to this fall's regular big game seasons.

The application process remains largely unchanged. Information regarding the application, priority pools, wildlife management zone (WMZ) quotas and detailed application instructions are available at www.saskatchewanlicences.active.com.

Apply early and use the online residency verification tool to avoid complications.

Draws for several species receive a high number of applications compared to the number of licences available. In these cases, the odds of being drawn will be low, even for applications in the top priority pool.

Hunters who are concerned about being unable to hunt because of the pandemic may wish to consider submitting a 'Zone 99' application. This allows the applicant to maintain their pool status without being drawn for a licence. Hunters should be aware there is no refund for big game draw application fees.

The big game draw is administered through the Saskatchewan Hunting, Angling and Trapping Licence (HAL) system. Clients can submit, review and update their applications, check pool status history and purchase a draw licence through their HAL accounts.

Draw results will be available through HAL accounts in mid-June, with the exception of pronghorn, which will be available in mid-July. Applicants are responsible for checking their own draw results.

Successful applicants can purchase licences through their HAL accounts beginning August 1, 2021.

Doukhobor Dugout Site Opening to the Public Once Again This Summer Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The Doukhobor Dugout House National Historic Site of Canada, near Blaine Lake off of Highway 12, was unable to open last year due to the COVID pandemic. Typically, each year, this site opens to the public and group tours are done of the area where those attending learn more about the Doukhobor people that lived there over 100 years ago.

This season, although things will be slightly different, the area will once again be open to the public.

This year, those visiting the site will do a self-guided tour.

There will also be an outdoor patio overlooking the river valley added into the mix. Despite not being open last year there were still several Doukhobor bread sales held, with proceeds from the sales going towards the construction of a roof on a Prayer Home on site that was dreamed of by Donna Choppe, a Doukhobor Dugout House volunteer and Director for 17 years, who sadly passed away in 2020. Last year, approximately $7600 was raised for this project through bread sales.

“The first bread sale we held, people couldn’t even get out of their cars due to the restrictions, then by the second and third times, they were able to get out of their cars and take a picture, and for the last one, they were able to walk around and look at things.

That was the extent of our season last year, so this year, some major changes were made so we could operate and we are really excited to be back,” Cheveldayoff said.

Instead of scheduled group tours, people are invited to come at any time between 10am and 5pm. There will be a map provided to you and ten significant spots in the yard that Doukhobor people utilized. There is also a museum available, food options such as Doukhobor bread grilled cheese sandwiches with dill pickle pasta salad and cookies, seasonal beverages and refreshments, a gift shop with locally made products, Doukhobor memorabilia and more.

The Doukhobor Dugout Site will be opening on July 3; however, there will be a Doukhobor bread sale taking place on June 5th, with the proceeds from the sale going towards a new coat of paint for Donna’s Prayer Home.

Cheveldayoff, who is a descendant, has been operating this site for the past 18 years. “This was where the Doukhobors lived – 300 of them, in the ground and it is the only one in Canada that is still standing and is both provincially and nationally designated,” Cheveldayoff stated.

Other changes will include a newly updated website, which is being funding through Tourism Saskatchewan that will launch this May. Although outdated, for more information and history about the Doukhobors of Saskatchewan, visit http://www. doukhobordugouthouse. com/.

Locally Owned and Operated Tack’d Cannabis Celebrates Grand Opening Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Martensville resident Trish Girard is proud to be the Founder and CEO of Martensville’s newest business – Tack’d Cannabis, which opened on April 5th at 7 – 40 Centennial Drive North.

Girard, who grew up in a rural farming community states that it was there that she learned the importance of culture built around close family and community.

“I’ve spent my time working to recreate this culture in the businesses I’ve created in the retail sector, and when my brother introduced the family farm to growing industrial help for CBD oil products, I knew this was my chance to come full circle and bring my experience back home,” Girard explained.

Tack’d Cannabis will have a wide variety of CBD and Cannabis products available to their customers, and Girard also noted that she is currently in the initial stages of designing her own line of Tack’d Cannabis products.

“We want our store to be welcoming to all ages, 19 and up, and to make sure each customer leaves with the products they love, or a better understanding of the cannabis industry. There are so many new products that

it may be overwhelming for some customers. We have taken a different approach and have menu boards next to our displays so that people can see what the product looks like and the product details such as whether it is sativa or indica, high THC or no THC,” Girard said.

Girard’s favorite addition is the Bud Bar display in the middle of the store, which gives customers the option to smell and see the different types of cannabis through a magnifying glass.

With family being such an important part of Girard’s life, the reasoning behind the name of her business was a natural choice, so she looked to her family for inspiration – T – Trish, A – Girard’s daughter Ava, C – Girard’s husband Chris, K – Girard’s son Kiefer and D – Girard’s eldest son Deacon.

Pfefferle stated that Premium Select Auto Solutions Ltd. is a pre-owned automotive dealership along with their partner company, ‘Affordable Autobody & Collision Repair Ltd,’ an on-site accredited autobody repair facility, that will provide minor and major autobody repairs, windshield & glass replacement, mechanical repairs as well as tire sales and service.

According to Belcourt, the body shop will have proper ventilation of a GFS semi-down draft controlled spray booth which is equipped with a high end filtration system to consume the fumes and particulates from being released into the environment. All body work will be done within the building as to not interrupt surrounding houses or businesses.

Council Discusses Landscape Options for Pump Track

Plans for the Martensville Pump Track are moving along, with the design phase now completed and now moving into the construction phase.

The construction of the pump track was part of the 2020 Municipal Economic Enhancement Program (MEEP) provided by the Government of Saskatchewan. Martensville received per capita funding and chose to allocate that funding to several projects within the community, with $250,000 planned for the construction of the pump track.

Plans then began to move quickly for the pump track, with a public engagement opportunity taking place earlier this year.

From there, Canadian Ramp Company presented a design to the Pump Track Committee which consists of a 149 metre (488 feet) pump track designed for all levels of users. The pump track will be integrated with the Kyle Syrenne Skatepark in Kinsmen Park.

“At the request of the committee, Canadian Ramp Company presented two scenarios, one being the pumptrack with regular landscaping, and one with artificial turf option that will go inside and around the pump track,” Director of Recreation and Community Services, Ted Schaeffer said during the April 13 Committee of the Whole Meeting. It was also noted that the artificial turf would improve drainage and significantly reduce the amount of maintenance required; however, it would add additional cost to the project, which would now cost just short of $299,000, requiring an additional $49,000.

Schaeffer noted that the additional funding would likely come out of the allocated funding that was planned for the Martensville campground.

Proposed Pilot For Ambulance in Martensville and Area Still Planned Once Resources Become Available According to Sask Health Authority Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Having an ambulance stationed within Martensville has been a major topic of conversation for many years and near the end of last year, that vision looked like it was closer to becoming a reality after representatives from Saskatchewan Health Authority and Medavie Health Services West, the SHA’s contracted privately-operated EMS provider for Saskatoon and area, met with representatives from both Martensville and Warman.

It was at this time that a pilot project for the two communities was discussed. This pilot-project would see a Medavie ambulance stationed within the two communities on an alternating week-to-week basis, whenever one was available to spare from Saskatoon.

While in the communities, the ambulance would be stationed at either the Warman or Martensville Fire Hall and would respond to calls not only in the two communities, but in the surrounding region, cutting down on ambulance response times for the residents living within the area.

Despite this plan being put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Medavie recruiting and staffing additional ambulance units, according to Lisa Thomson, SHA Media Relations Consultant, the proposed pilot was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “In September, the COVID-19 numbers were relatively controlled in our province, recruitment of additional Paramedic staffing was completed and the additional units were introduced in October and November, which unfortunately coincided with the beginning of a surge in COVID-19 infections provincially. The pilot was tentatively planned to begin in January.

We were unable to initiate a trial of the pilot at that time due to the significant demands on EMS and hospital services due to the pandemic,” Thomson said.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected other areas as well, “Saskatoon Emergency Departments continue to review ways to reduce time required for EMS patient transfers. For example, at Royal University Hospital, we have onboarded staff and intend to create an offload area for EMS patients once the space is no longer reserved for our COVID surge plan.”

Currently, when a medical emergency takes place within Martensville, the Martensville Fire Department First Responders attend the call and assess the patient(s), and provide medical care until Medavie arrives, where transfer of care will then take place and the patient will be transported to a health care facility. “If all the ambulances are on other calls the ambulance response may be delayed until an ambulance unit/crew can be cleared from their patient. The Medical First Responders will continue providing care for ill or injured patients until the ambulance unit/crew arrives,” Thomson said. The timeframe for this transfer of care can vary, depending on how quickly an ambulance is available to come to Martensville, with some calls seeing an ambulance on scene within 20-30 minutes, and others taking upwards of an hour or more.

Thomson noted that discussions are being held to discuss options for a longterm solution to improve response times for the community. “With the additional investment in EMS resources in Saskatoon and Regina that was announced as part of the 2021-22 provincial budget, there will be a phased expansion for additional staffed ambulance resources in Saskatoon over the course of 2021-22. The SHA will be consulting with the City of Martensville, the City of Warman and Medavie Health Services to determine how the additional Saskatoon EMS resources will be used to further improve response times.”

“The plan is to initiate the pilot once resources are able to support it,” Thomson added.

The Martensville Marauder Alumni continue to make this community proud as several past Marauders are working their way up to the next level!

Morgan Tastad from Loreburn, Sk played with the U15 AA program in the 20-21 season and is headed to the Saskatoon Contacts U18 AAA team next season.

Joining him is Carter Mason from Perdue who played with the Martensville Marauder U15 AA from 2017-2019 earning 45 total points during that time. He played the 20192021 season with the U18 AA team in Martensville racking up 13 total points.

Ryan Bain of Hanley played his 2020-21 season with the U15 AA Marauders and has signed on with the Moose Jaw AAA Warriors.

Congratulations to Wyatt Wurtz from Dalmeny who played U18 AA in Martensville last season and Owen Dyck from Borden who played U15 AA in Martensville last season for signing with the AAA Battleford Stars!

Martensville’s Taylor Leitch was a Marauder up until her U15 season when she moved on to play U15 AA Female hockey and on to PA with the Prince Albert Bears for AAA. She recently signed with the University of Windsor Lancers for the 2022/2023 Season!

“As an Association we are extremely proud of the success we are seeing in moving athletes to the next level. These young people have worked very hard and have certainly earned these opportunities,” said Trevor Hanley, President of Martensville Minor Hockey Association.

Each year, the Martensville & District Lions Club hosts the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides; however, since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the walk has been modified to a virtual version. This year, the virtual walk will be taking place on May 30, 2021.

This walk is a national fundraiser that is held in approximately 300 communities across the country to help raise funds which are used towards the training of Dog Guides for Canadians with visual, hearing, medical or physical disabilities.

Through the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides program, Dog Guides, required training, transportation and accommodation are provided to qualified applicants at no cost.

According to Doug Ward of the Martensville & District Lions Club, there are currently 300 Guide Dogs and puppies in different stages of training that are being handled at home with their trainers and/or volunteer handlers.

“Although Pet Valu supplies food, there are other training expenses and supplies that are needed on a regular basis. You can help by participating in a virtual walk by walking, riding a bike, jogging, skipping or anything you would like to do and letting any friend, neighbor, relative or fellow worker know that they can still help out. This year, you can record your distances/steps and help us walk across Canada by starting right now,” Ward explained.

Moe Mostly Right About Vaccine Strategy

There are surely more things Premier Scott Moe and his government need to do in this COVID-19 fight, but what the government has done with its vaccine supply has worked. The problem is that vaccines are not the exclusive solution.

While the new cases have, thankfully, levelled off a bit in the southeast and Moose Jaw areas, the new, seemingly more contagious variants continue to hammer Regina and area very hard. The result of this is that Saskatchewan continues to have among the highest per capita new cases in the country, (although even bigger problems in Ontario have pushed Saskatchewan off the front pages of the newspapers).

Far more disturbing than this, however, is that we are now leading the country in per capita COVID-19related hospitalizations and are now seeing record ICU admissions. This is especially a problem in Regina where ICU doctors and other staff pleaded with the government recently to address the issue of overcrowded ICUs where patients were bunking people in at a rate of two to a room.

In fact, NDP Opposition leader Ryan Meili invited Moe — at the behest of the ICU doctors — to take a quick tour of the ICUs to see how bad the problem actually is. We need to stop a moment and consider the reality here.

Yes, Oppositions will always highlight the most extreme of any situation to score political points. And, yes, the problem that they point to is one that is — at least at this point — far worse in Regina, but that in no way means that the problem isn’t real, that it couldn’t spread to people elsewhere in the province or that it doesn’t affect you right now.

That cases in Regina stubbornly refuse to decrease is a legitimate worry and the thing now driving the debate about why we need more restrictions and certainly why the restrictions we currently have been extended across the province until the middle of next month.

This isn’t just a Regina problem. We also now see a rise in cases — especially new variant cases — in Saskatoon as well and one simply can’t underplay the significance of overcrowded city hospitals and ICUs. For the rest of the province, rising hospitalizations means there won’t be a bed for you if you get COVID-19 or a heart attack of if you are in an accident.

Government numbers show less Saskatchewan people are dying now than in January when more older people were dying of COVID-19. However, those now in hospitals and ICUs are staying there longer. This is likely due to the sad reality that that older people who catch COVID-19 die more quickly and younger people can fight it longer in hospital care.

The added problem is the nature of this province that makes travel in and out of cities a necessity for most rural people. This further makes it necessary for all of us to play by the same general rules (mask wearing, social distancing, severe limits on in-person dining or bar visits) if those rules are to have any positive impact at all.

In short, it’s not exclusively about vaccines … although Moe is right that vaccines are likely the way out of this pandemic.

Why there are less people dying in Saskatchewan has everything to do with the fact that we are leading the nation in per capita vaccination — especially among older people.

While there is an argument that emergency and frontline and others in public settings like teachers need to be a priority too, the reality is that federal government is only providing so much vaccine.

The vaccines we have been doled out quickly and — arguably — wisely. Yes, the province needs to do other things better, but vaccine distribution is one thing we are doing rather well.

Saskatchewan’s vaccination rollout is going well and we’re getting COVID-19 vaccine into the arms of residents as quickly as we’re receiving them. In fact, we are leading all Canadian provinces in vaccine doses administered per 100,000 of the population. If we are going to keep up this pace, we need the federal government to procure more vaccines ASAP.

Thank you for being patient, understanding, and for observing public health orders to keep our friends, families, and communities safe. Thanks also for doing everything you can to keep our province moving. Health professionals, emergency responders, service providers, business owners and employees have all worked tirelessly to adapt and, thanks to these efforts, Saskatchewan will be stronger than ever once the pandemic is over.

Our government is actively working on a plan to re-open Saskatchewan safely in a post-COVID world – but we aren’t there yet. The best thing we can do right now to protect ourselves, others, and to get back to doing the things we love is by following public health orders and getting the COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available to us.

Residents ages 40 and over who have contracted COVID-19 have seen the most severe outcomes, accounting for 84 per cent of total hospitalizations and 96 per cent of total deaths. To reduce the risk of these severe outcomes, we are working towards opening vaccine eligibility to all residents ages 40 and over. AstraZeneca is being integrated into the vaccination rollout plan and will be used to immunize adults 40 years and older.

Once vaccine eligibility has been opened to all residents ages 40 and over, we will prioritize access through mass-vaccination settings to remaining prioritized first-responders along with additional front-line workers ages 16+, depending on vaccine product, including police officers, firefighters, front-line healthcare workers with direct patient contact employed by the SHA or private employers (including dentists, optometrists, chiropractors), teachers and educational staff working directly with students, correctional staff, and border security officers.

Countries further along than Canada in their vaccination rollout are seeing significant reductions in both their case numbers and hospitalization numbers, and I am confident we will see the same results here. Thank you to all staff working at clinics across the province. Every shot, in every arm, makes Saskatchewan a little safer. The vaccines work, the vaccines are safe, and when it’s your turn, I strongly encourage you to roll up your sleeve and stick it to COVID.

Expanding Use of Virtual Technology to Enhance Health Services

While COVID-19 accelerated the use of virtual health care technology, its expansion is improving access to care for residents in rural and remote areas, and providing convenience for patients who need to connect with a physician for basic concerns.

The Ministry of Health and eHealth are developing an action plan to enhance virtual services, focusing on security, privacy, and user experience. Priorities will include videoconferencing, remote patient monitoring, and MySaskHealthRecord. In support of this, Saskatchewan has signed a bilateral agreement with the Government of Canada to expand virtual care services.

Other News and Initiatives

Saskatchewan is leading Canada’s economic recovery from COVID-19, something that is reflected in a remarkable 25 per cent increase in wholesale trade growth. Strong wholesale trade numbers, a leading economic indicator, coupled with the best vaccine rollout plan in the country, shows our province will see a quicker economic recovery than other jurisdictions.

As the spring sitting of the legislature rolls on, our government continues to deliver on its commitments as part of this year’s provincial budget, including increased funding for the Veteran Service Club Support Program from $100,000 to $1,500,000. This will continue supporting veterans and their families in Saskatchewan by helping to keep Legions operational and make the necessary improvements to continue serving our heroes.

Recent legislation includes amendments to further support agricultural technology development by providing authority for Innovation Saskatchewan to make investments in ag-tech startups through a Venture Capital fund. The changes will allow for new investment into game-changing technology for farmers and producers that will help accelerate our economic recovery and become a significant economic driver for our province.

KidSport Playhouse Fundraiser Success Earns Martensville A&W National Award

There are over 1000 A&W locations across Canada, and this year a total of 12 of these awards were presented among these locations.

“This award recognizes small acts of kindness as well as exceptional acts of service. Both have the power to make a difference in their communities and positively impact the lives of the people within them. The Community Champion award recipient engages in activities that make their community a vibrant and rewarding place to live, work and play,” A&W Regional Manager Chris Hurley stated during the virtual presentation for the award.

Milva Nieves, A&W Canada Business Manager continued to state that, Brian, Bernice and Rachelle are “an inspiration” and spoke about the passion that the family has for this project. “You made a difference for KidSport and those families that cannot afford to enroll their kids in organized sports,” Nieves continued.

Rachelle Buffin then commented about how important community involvement is for them. “This is something that we hold very close to our hearts.” Buffin also noted that if there are other locations interested in doing something similar, they would be happy to help provide direction.

When this idea first came to be, it stemmed from a conversation that took place between Brian Buffin and Angie Reddekopp, President of the local KidSport Association, back in 2015.

At this time, Reddekopp sat down with Buffin to explain what KidSport was all about, and that there was a real need for this support in the region, as many families were unable to afford to put ABOVE: Without the sponsors, Brian Buffin of the Martensville A&W, states that the annual KidSport Playhouse fundraiser would not be possible. Hearing this information is what ignited something within Buffin and it didn’t take long for him to reach out in the community to other businesses. “I have never had a problem getting support for this project and without the sponsors, ABOVE: Each year the playhouse is moved into the A&W parking lot to be displayed until the this wouldn’t be possible,” draw takes place.

Since 2016, the local KidSport program has received a helping hand thanks to the generous contributions of local businesses and organizations through the KidSport playhouse fundraiser.

This fundraiser helps raise money each year through the sale of raffle tickets, with the winner receiving a 100-square-foot playhouse, built by high school students and possible through the donations of local businesses who sponsor the project. All money raised goes to the local KidSport chapter, which helps youth participate in organized sports when they are otherwise financially unable to.

From day one, this fundraiser saw much success, raising $10,580 in the first year. In 2017, a total of $7,769 was raised, 2018 with $13,173 and 2019 saw $12,432 come in through the playhouse raffle. In total, $43,954 has gone towards helping local children participate in organized sports. That success continued up until last year when due to the COVID pandemic, the fundraiser was unable to take place.

This incredible feat is what earned the Martensville A&W, owned by Brian, Bernice and Rachelle Buffin, the title of ‘Community Champion’.

That first year, it began with Anthony Nienhuis at Martensville Building and Home Supply, who offered to provide the building materials. From there, Buffin contacted David Fossum, the Industrial Arts teacher at Martensville High School, who turned this fundraiser into a project for his class. Next, Brad’s Towing came on board to help move the playhouse from the high school into the A&W parking lot to be displayed. Then, Clark’s Crossing Gazette in Warman offered to provide signage and marketing for the project.

Since the beginning, the Martensville and District Lions Club have been a driving force in ensuring the success of this fundraiser, putting in countless hours selling tickets and helping to promote it within the area.

Buffin took a moment to acknowledge how much effort this organization has dedicated to this project, noting that they have been a massive part of making the fundraiser as successful as it has been throughout the years.

Reddekopp stated that in the past five years, the number of applications and funds provided within the community have doubled. “With this raffle taking place, it has helped to increase the awareness of the program in the community, so that has brought in more applications, but also, the community is growing and there is a higher need for it. The KidSport playhouse raffle is the biggest fundraiser that we have, and last year, when it didn’t take place due to the pandemic, we saw an impact. We weren’t able to fund people as much as we had in the past.”

For Reddekopp, this fundraiser brings a sense of relief, knowing now that there is a team of local businesses along with the Martensville & District Lions Club helping to support KidSport. “It is amazing to know that we have a strong, well-established and well-received fundraiser in place that is going to help with the majority of support needed to fund the kids in the community. We have seen the people in the community really get behind this fundraiser, and we have been able to help so many kids because of it.”

According to Reddekopp, over the past five years, well over 200 kids have been funded, thanks to the money raised through this fundraiser. “This project has been such a huge part of KidSport in our community. Our local A&W was the driving force that got the ball rolling, and helped make it grow, and created these amazing partnerships. I was ecstatic to hear about the award they received and it goes to show that something can start small and grow into this nationally awarded event. It is a passion for Brian, Bernice and Rachelle, and you can tell that they hold it close to their hearts,” Reddekopp added.

This year, things are going to be done a little differently, as the playhouse that was intended for 2020, was unfinished due to the COVID pandemic. Brian Buffin then decided to contact a friend of his who is also a skilled carpenter, Marty Goertzen, who agreed to complete the project. Local realtor Richard Reimer is also a sponsor of the project this year, and has offered to cover costs of the project, which include building materials.

The playhouse will be moved to the Martensville A&W later this month, with tickets available around that same time. The raffle draw will be made later in the year.

“Not only is it support from the sponsors that make this possible, but the people in Martensville and the surrounding areas are the ones who purchase tickets.

We couldn’t do this without them and they have been supporting us right from the start,” Brian Buffin stated.

CPPS Issue Various Tickets on Clarence Avenue Over Two-Day Period

April 24, Corman Park Police Service conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle travelling 50 km/hr over the posted speed limit of 60 km/ hr on Clarence Avenue. The driver was issued a $865.00 speeding ticket and the vehicle was impounded for 7 days due to the high rate of speed.

On April 25, Corman Park Police Service (CPPS) set up a check-stop on Clarence Avenue.

Officers stopped vehicles travelling both directions. During this time, the officers issued four 72-hour suspensions and arrested two impaired drivers that provided breath samples close to double the legal limit.

CPPS reminds motorists to always plan a safe ride home and that there are also numerous ride share options out there to take advantage of.

Vehicle Impounded Following Positive Cannabis Reading in Driver

On April 22, at approximately 12:35am, a Corman Park Police Service member was finishing up a traffic stop on Highway 11 near Warman when this vehicle failed to slow to 60km/h as it passed by the patrol vehicle with its lights in operation. A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle on Highway 11 just north of Township 390. Upon speaking to the driver a strong odor of cannabis was detected coming from inside the vehicle.

When questioned, the three occupants of the vehicle denied the presence of and consumption of cannabis. A search of the vehicle found fresh cannabis joints, along with joints that had just recently been smoked.

A sample of oral fluid was provided by the driver resulting in a positive reading for cannabis. The driver was issued a 120-day license suspension due to this being their second roadside suspension for driving under the influence of cannabis. The vehicle was then impounded for 30 days as one of the passengers was under 16 years of age.

The cannabis was seized and tickets issued to passengers for being minors in possession of cannabis and to the driver for possession of cannabis in a vehicle.

Ministry of Health Reminds Sask Residents to be Mindful of Hantavirus

The Ministry of Health is reminding Saskatchewan residents to take precautions against Hantavirus as the weather warms up.

"The risk of contracting Hantavirus infection is currently low in Saskatchewan," Saskatchewan's Deputy Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Julie Kryzanowski said. "However, you can get Hantavirus by breathing in contaminated airborne particles from the droppings, urine ABOVE: A deer mouse. and saliva of infected deer mice."

Hantavirus can cause a rare but potentially fatal lung illness known as Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome and exposure most often occurs when cleaning up enclosed buildings, or equipment and vehicles that have been in storage for the winter.

Symptoms usually start within one to six weeks of exposure and include fever, muscle aches, cough, headaches, nausea and vomiting. Some people develop severe symptoms that can be life threatening. Seek medical attention immediately if you have a cough, fever and shortness of breath.

To avoid exposure to Hantavirus, be aware of mouse droppings and nesting materials and take the following precautions when cleaning infested areas: • Ventilate the building by opening doors and windows for at least 30 minutes before cleaning; • Use wet mopping methods and wear rubber or plastic gloves; • Wear goggles and a well-fitting N-95 type filter mask when cleaning areas contaminated by droppings in a confined space; • Dampen areas contaminated with rodent droppings with bleach disinfectant and remove droppings with a damp mop or cloth; • Avoid using dry cleaning methods such as dusting, sweeping, vacuuming or airhosing; • Steam clean, shampoo or spray upholstered furniture with a detergent, disinfectant or a mixture of bleach and water; and • Wash clothes and bedding with detergent in hot water.

Also, take steps to reduce rodent infestations: • Block openings that might allow rodents to enter a building; • Store human and animal food, water and garbage in containers with tightly-fitted lids; and • Move woodpiles or other potential hiding places for mice away from your home.

Between 1994 and 2020, 36 cases of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome have been reported in Saskatchewan; 12 of those cases were fatal.
