Easter Geocaching Activity Continues to Gain in Popularity Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Since 2016, the City of Martensville Recreation Department has been providing a fun activity for local families to participate in over the Easter break. For a week, they provide multiple locations throughout the community so families can have fun geocaching together.

“This event has gained in popularity over the last couple of years, and we didn’t realize just how popular it was until we put a message out this week postponing it due to vandalism and theft. We had an overwhelming response to people commenting and being upset that it happened. It was obvious that this is an event that people appreciate and like doing, so we reset it and got it up and running as quickly as we could,” Angie Reddekopp, City of Martensville Program Coordinator, said.

The City offers two of these geocaching activities throughout the year, one in Spring and another in the Fall. The Easter week event is made to be more child friendly with items being easier to find, whereas the one in the fall is designed to be more difficult.

Over the past weekend, 35 groups completed the geocaching task, which in total consisted of approximately 200 individuals participating in groups of one or more family.

Once complete, family’s text the Rec Department and get entered in to win a prize of either a family pass to the Martensville Athletic Pavilion or the Martensville Aquatic Centre. If groups complete the first five coordinates, they get one entry, and if they complete the two bonus coordinates, they receive an extra entry.

“This is a great family fun event and there is not a lot of cost for us to organize it.

It is a come and go activity that you can do at your own pace. The whole purpose is to get people out and about during the break and have some fun together as a family,” Reddekopp added. The beautiful weather we have been experiencing has seen an influx of participants, as previous years when the activity was hosted, we saw snowstorms.

Families can participate in the Easter geocaching event until April 26th, and the draw for prizes will be done on April 29th. For more information, visit the ‘City of Martensville’ Facebook page, or contact the MAP at (306) 683-5576.

Landscaping or Working on your Property This Summer? - Things you Should Know

Access to Private Property Through Open Spaces Bylaw Due to damage to City property and failure to remedy damages; the City has created the Access to Private Property Through Open Spaces Bylaw. The City Traffic Control and Waste Bylaws have also been rewritten to set the provisions to access private property through City land.

Access to Private Property Through Open Spaces Bylaw 2-2016 Permit required Any person or businesses that will be driving a vehicle or equipment over city open space to access private property are now required to apply for a permit prior to gaining access.

Section 6 (2) No person shall carry on the following activities in an open space area without a permit: (a) leave or store personal property; (b) set up a temporary shelter, tarp, canopy or other such device; (c) drive or arrange for a vehicle or equipment to be driven through an open space area; Traffic Bylaw – Dumping of Materials Dumping of material onto city streets is not permitted. Any material must be placed on the owner’s property unless permission is granted by the Director of Infrastructure and Planning or designate. Any person or any business who will be conducting work on or around city streets must setup a safe temporary traffic control zone.

Section 4 (f) Any person or company responsible for construction, construction equipment, or material within the highway/street must setup a safe temporary work traffic control zone. At the request of the Director of Infrastructure and Planning or designate a written work zone traffic control plan may be required prior to approval for installation and setup.

Waste Bylaw 18-2015 Work sites must have a bin/truck on site to dump their waste material into, so as to not leave material scattered around the work site or piled on the road way.

The first round of the 2019 NHL Playoffs has been everything but predictable.

The top team in each conference has been eliminated. The Tampa Bay Lighting became the first team ever to win the Presidents Trophy as the top team in the regular season and get swept in the first round. Tampa lost four straight (4-3, 5-1, 3-1, 7-3) to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

In the West it was the Calgary Flames that were the best in the regular season and after a 4-0 game one victory, lost their next four (3-2 OT, 6-2, 3-2 OT, 5-1) to the Colorado Avalanche to be eliminated in five games.

Another series that differed from what most predicted was the Islanders, Penguins series. I did pick New York to win the series but I was NOT expecting a four game sweep.

Sidney Crosby and the Pens lost four in a row (4-3, 3-1, 4-1, 3-1) to be eliminated from the 2019 playoffs.

For the second year in a row the Boston Bruins have defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs in seven games to move on. Toronto had a chance to close the series out at home in game six but fell 4-2 and sending the series back to Boston for the final do-or-die game.

Boston jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first and would add a pair of empty netters to make the final 5-1. Boston will now host the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday to kick off the second round of these playoffs.

The St. Louis Blues were able to lock down a series win with their only home win of the series against the Winnipeg Jets. The Blues moved on in six games and will now face the Dallas Stars who upset the Central Division Champion Nashville Predators. John Klingberg sealed the series win at home in overtime in the sixth game for the Dallas Stars.

Game one between the Stars and Blues will also get going on Thursday.

The San Jose Sharks scored in double overtime to come back from a 3-1 series deficit and defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in game 7. The Sharks will host the Colorado Avalanche in round two.

The reigning Stanley Cup Champions are on the brink of being another team to be upset in these playoffs. Washington fell 5-2 in Carolina earlier this week as the Hurricanes forced a game seven that goes down on April 24th. The winner of that series will go on to play the New York Islanders who haven’t played since April 16th when they completed the sweep of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The MAP was full of volleyball action on Saturday, April 20th where Outerlimits Club Volleyball hosted a seven team round robin tournament.

Martensville’s U16 lost to Battleford in the final and placed second. There were teams from Battleford, Warman and Saskatoon.

Dry Conditions and Strong Wind Causing Fires Throughout the Province Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

With the dry weather and strong winds that have been encasing Saskatchewan lately, the risk of fires throughout the province is getting higher. On Easter weekend, fire crews from Martensville, Warman, Saskatoon, Dalmeny and Langham battled a blaze in Corman Park located approximately 16 kms west of Saskatoon near the intersection of Range Road 3073 and Township Road 380. The smoke from the fire was visible for miles as crews worked together to get it under control.

A wide array of equipment was brought in to help extinguish the fire, as well as a water bomber airplane and three homes were evacuated. In the end one home that was believed to be abandoned suffered extreme damage.

The fire was under control by 3am on Sunday, with crews remaining on scene in the following hours to control flare ups.

On Monday, April 22nd, battle a blaze in the Rural Municipality of Corman crews from Warman, Martensville, Park over the Easter weekend. (Dalmeny Fire Osler, Langham and Saskatoon were Rescue) called to two separate fires in rural areas. According to Warman Fire Rescue, “both were caused by human acts, and were preventable. Extreme fire conditions continue today. Don’t even throw a cigarette butt in a ditch.”

As of Monday, April 22nd, a large grass fire near Biggar, SK has forced authorities to issue a state of emergency for area residents due to the thick smoke and the fire growing to nearly 5,000 hectares. Local RCMP officials announced Monday afternoon that the fire was out of control and evacuated the area between Highways 4 and 51 and as of Tuesday morning, a water bomber was being called in to help battle the fire and to protect farm buildings in the area.

There is currently a total fire ban in place within Corman Park due to dry conditions and as of April 23rd, 37 rural municipalities and five villages within the province have issued fire bans. Martensville Ladies Night Returns With New Mission in Mind Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Ladies get your neon clothes and leg warmers ready for May 25th, as the annual Martensville Ladies Night will be taking place, and this year’s theme is 80’s!

Tracey Lengyel is planning the event for her first time, and is already looking forward to hosting an unforgettable evening for the women of Martensville and surrounding areas. Lengyel has attended numerous local Ladies Nights for many years, and after moving to Martensville last year, decided to take the task on this year. “Paula, who planned the event last year, is a good friend of mine and had decided not to organize Ladies Night this year. I thought about it, and decided that this was something that I could take on to help raise money for a cause that is very important to me,” Lengyel explained.

The cause that is so near and dear to her heart is the Rett Syndrome Association in Saskatoon. Lengyel’s daughter was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome when she was four years old, after being misdiagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at two years old. According to Lengyel, Rett Syndrome is a genetic error on the X chromosome, which affects all abilities. “It is like having cerebral palsy and autism all mixed in, with no speech abilities. It is something that you are born with, and it is often misdiagnosed until they get older and different traits become apparent.” The reason that Rett Syndrome more often affects females is due to girls having two X chromosomes, while males have the XY chromosome.

Having been involved with the Rett Syndrome Association in Saskatoon for many years, Lengyel thought that the Martensville Ladies Night fundraiser was the perfect event to raise money for the syndrome, as the money would be going to help little girls afflicted within the province. “We want to create a clinic in Saskatoon where the girls would be able to go once or twice a year and see all of the doctors and therapists in one trip, rather than having to make a trip once a month. There are some family’s that have to travel far distances each month and this would allow them some added convenience. Rett Syndrome is pretty rare and in total, there are 24 girls affected in Saskatchewan. We just want to make life for them and their families a little easier by providing this,” Lengyel said. Money raised from the event will go towards funding the clinic, as well as providing a scholarship for a local female graduate. “To me, it just made sense to have an event for women that would be helping these girls. It is all about supporting one another.”

Lengyel and others from Rett Syndrome Association have been hard at work organizing everything for a fun night out and the event will include music by the band, ‘The Gongshow’, a meal catered by Sabaroso in Saskatoon and numerous opportunities to win some incredible prizes. One of the prizes already collected is a donation from WestJet for two anywhere they fly. The group is still collecting prize donations, and those interested in contributing can contact Lengyel at (306) 230-6364 or at martensvilleladiesnight@ hotmail.com.

Valley Manor School Raises Awareness About White Cane for Blind or Partially Blind

Valley Manor Elementary School Special Education Teacher Michelle Olivier has a goal in mind which is to help area residents and motorists become more educated when it comes to others that may be blind or partially blind. This year, Olivier is working with 8 year old Matthew Rudolph, who is visually impaired on the use of a white cane in and around the school and through this, has decided to learn more herself so she can help share information with others.

“I wanted to provide some education, not just here at the school, but also in the community about the use of a white cane and some of the things that we need to think about when encountering someone with a white cane – both students and drivers,” Olivier said.

With this in mind, she reached out to CNIB, formerly known as the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. CNIB is a non-profit organization that celebrated 100 years in 2018.

Their goal is to change what it means to be blind today by offering innovative programs and to advocate for those impacted by blindness to live a normal life. Olivier received some details from Danae Mack, who is the Orientation and Mobility Specialist at CNIB, and has been extremely helpful in providing information and supports for Olivier to use within the school.

The white cane is one of the most common tools used by people who are blind to safely navigate their surroundings. According to CNIB, the white cane is recognized around the world, and is also an important identification tool. “It’s a clear signal to others the user is a person with sight loss.”

Although not all people who are blind require the use of a white cane, or a guide dog, these are things to watch for and for Olivier, it is important for motorists to understand what to look for, not just in the Martensville school zones, but everywhere. “Drivers can come across someone utilizing a white cane anywhere in their travels, and it is important to be aware of your surroundings and to understand why that person has a white cane. We just want to ensure that everyone is safe and aware,” Olivier said.

Raelyn Janzen, Matthew’s mother, urges motorists to exercise extra caution when driving. “I have always raised Matthew to be really cautious, but for drivers, he looks like every other kid out there. They can’t tell that he is unable to see them just by looking at him. We are working on getting him a white cane to use when he is out and about, which will help, but in the end, it is all of our responsibility to ensure the safety of all children when we are driving,” Janzen said. A concern for Janzen is that Matthew relies heavily on his hearing; however, in high noise areas, such as the school zone, it is difficult for him to determine if it is safe to cross the street or not.

Janzen noted that it has always been difficult to find a balance of exercising caution, while at the same time, teaching Matthew to be more independent, which is part of the reason they recently moved to Martensville from Saskatoon. “There is less traffic here, so we have been able to work with him on walking to school from our house, or walking to his grandma’s house around the corner. I am really grateful for the support that we have gotten from the school between the other kids, the Educational Assistants and the teachers. He has a great team behind him,” explained Janzen.

In the end, both Janzen, and Olivier have the same goal in mind, which is to ensure that all children can get home safe at the end of the day.

WCB Coverage Expanded For Volunteer Firefighters In The Province

The Government of Saskatchewan announced that the province’s 6,500 volunteer firefighters will have easier access to Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) benefits.

Volunteer firefighters will have access to the same presumptive coverage as professional firefighters. Expanded presumptive coverage was first introduced for professional firefighters through an amendment to the legislation introduced this past December, which includes six additional cancers – prostate, skin, breast, cervical and ovarian cancer as well as multiple myeloma.

“We thank firefighters for the work they do every day to keep us safe,” Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Don Morgan said. “We are extending presumptive coverage to volunteer firefighters to make it easier for them to access the supports they need.”

These changes, as part of Bill 165, the Workers’ Compensation Amendment Act, will come into force on proclamation.

To apply for Workers’ Compensation, applicants will need to provide a diagnosis and other required information from a medical professional to support their claim.

Rural and Urban Schools Need New Funding Approach

It can be argued the Saskatchewan Party government hasn’t yet got school funding right, but it can also be argued no previous government has either. Sask. Party supporters likely have a point when they suggest it’s galling for today's New Democrats to complain about school overcrowding when it was their predecessor’s government that closed 176 schools from 1992 until August 2007.

Moreover, the Sask. Party further argues that with population stagnation during most of the NDP government years, the NDP should be blamed for creating a situation where new schools in Saskatchewan were not needed. It’s good political rhetoric, but, as often the case with political rhetoric, it doesn’t perfectly reflect all of the reality.

More importantly, none of this political back and forth is doing much to address the new and old problems in both rural and urban Saskatchewan when it comes to addressing our schools’ needs. Prairie Rivers Reconciliation Committee Hosts Free Educational Opportunities With Support Of Dakota Dunes Community Development Corporation

Prairie Rivers Reconciliation Committee, comprised of more than 40 members including the City of Warman and the Office of the Treaty Commissioner, met at a retreat at Wanuskewin Heritage Park to discuss next steps for reconciliation, education and building relationships. The day, facilitated by Derek Rope of MR-Strategies, included a vision and mission statement exercise, goal setting and strategic planning.

“Relationships that have been established as a result of this committee have been outstanding and have allowed us to identify reconciliation champions we can rely on,” says Robin Bendig, program coordinator at Great Plains College and co-chair of the committee. “In addition to building capacity in individuals sitting on the committee, it has also helped the organizations and communities they work in.”

Prairie Rivers Reconciliation Committee first came together in January 2018, organized by Great Plains College, the City of Warman and the Office of the Treaty Commissioner, and is one of many reconciliation committees established in Saskatchewan. The Committee was developed in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and is co-chaired with Mayor Sheryl Spence of Warman and Charmain Laroque of Prairie Spirit School Division.

“Our committee has grown throughout the last calendar year to over 40 representatives from communities including Warman, Martensville, One Arrow First Nation, Dalmeny, Osler, Mistawasis First Nation, Aberdeen, Corman Park and Duck Lake,” explained Bendig. “We are unique in that we have elected representatives from each of the communities, and from organizations such as Mennonite Central Committee, Affinity Credit Union, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Federated Co-operatives Limited and the Saskatoon Regional Economic Development Authority.”

The priority has been education-for the committee, organizations they represent and the communities. “We are all on this journey together and recognize that education is the first step in building capacity,” says Bendig.

Thanks to a grant through Dakota Dunes Community Development Corporation, the committee has opened events and educational opportunities to the community, including a conference called ‘Rural Reconciliation: An Educational Gathering’ in Warman on Nov. 7, 2018, a presentation from the Musqua sisters in Osler and an upcoming ceremony planned with the Prairie Spirt School Division, Great Plains College and the RCMP. The grant also enables meetings to be hosted in different communities which provides opportunities to invite additional community members and organizations.

An internal educational opportunity is organized each meeting and has included everything from Elder teachings and ways to measure the impacts of the reconciliation group, to antiracist education and creating an inclusion and diversity strategy.

“It is amazing what a passionate group can accomplish when they come together and have support from organizations such as Dakota Dunes Community Development Corporation,” says Bendig. “While we are still defining our long-term goals, it’s clear that members want to build strong relationships and a long-term commitment toward reconciliation.”

The 2nd Annual Rural Reconciliation Conference will be hosted in Martensville on October 3, 2019. “Of course, the public will be welcome to attend,” explained Bendig. “We want to grow the event from 220 attendees last year to 400 attendees and hope that awareness and connections continue to grow.”
