Martensville Fire Department Preparing for FireFit Championships Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

In less than two months Martensville will be hosting the annual Buster Days celebration. Although it seems far away due to the cold white stuff still sticking around, organizers are hard at work ensuring that this year is as successful as previous ones.

A new addition to the weekend celebrations this year is the Saskatchewan Regional FireFit Championships, which will take place Saturday, June 2nd and Sunday, June 3rd.

The Firefit Championships, which first began in 1994, consist of numerous challenges that are commonly used by firefighters in emergency situations such as; a stair climb, 42 pound hose hoist, tower descending, beam hammering, 140 foot sprint, victim rescue and more. These trials are done in order to showcase each firefighter’s skill and fitness level and has often been referred to as the toughest two minutes in any sport.

The intense event is all done while firefighters are in full gear, including their self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

The Martensville Fire Department is looking forward to the opportunity to bring this incredible challenge to the community and have been pushing themselves as hard as possible during training exercises to ensure those running the difficult course will finish with a competitive time. This will be the first time that the FireFit Championships have been hosted in Saskatchewan in many years, so the MFD is honoured to be able to showcase this event in Martensville. With firefighters from across the province signed up to compete, it will be sure to bring in a large number of visitors to the community.

“This is a big event for Martensville and something new for Buster Days, so we hope that we get the support from the community to come out and see what these firefighters can do,” MFD Chief Kurt Dyck said.

“Planning is well underway, and we

have a number of volunteers already lined up. We still plan on doing the pancake breakfast on Saturday morning, participating in the parade and then we will begin the FireFit event at noon on Saturday,” Dyck explained. The individual competition will take place on Saturday, with the team challenge on Sunday. Currently, there are several Martensville firefighters already signed up; however, even the ones that are not already signed up to participate have been taking part in the grueling training exercises. “Everybody has run through the course and it has been a great way to unite us even more so as a department.

It has brought us all closer and it gets the team spirit going,” added Dyck. The members of the MFD began training early, as they are pushing themselves to get a good time at the event. “It is one of those personal challenges where you push yourself as hard as you can to see what kind of time you can get. It is a tough course, especially if you are looking to complete it in a good time.”

Leading up to the event, the MFD is looking for local businesses that would like to either sponsor the event, or donate a prize item. There are several sponsorship opportunities available, which range from $500 to $5,000. All businesses that sponsor the event will receive various means of recognition leading up to, during, and following the Firefit Championships.

Keeping Saskatchewan on Track

Our Government has a plan to return Saskatchewan to a balanced budget by next year, and that plan is on track.

The Government of Saskatchewan continues to control and carefully manage spending in the 2018-19 Provincial Budget. Many ministries are forecasting lower spending than in the previous fiscal year, while continuing to provide valued core services that are sustainable into the future.

Expenses are forecast to be down 1.4 per cent from last year’s budget. Government has also realized $5 million in savings by reducing the number of government-owned vehicles and $19 million in savings from amalgamation into one health region, while improving front-line care.

While working to control spending, we continue to invest in the priorities of Saskatchewan people – health care, education and social services in particular. Investment in these three areas is $10.4 billion, an increase of $4 billion, or more than 64%, since 2007-08.

This year’s budget provides $700,000 for universal 100% coverage for HIV drugs and other supports; over $520,000 for a new program to screen babies born in Saskatchewan hospitals for hearing loss; and $2.8 million to individualized funding for children under six with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Our government’s commitment to increase education operating funding for the 2018-19 school year was also delivered in this budget, as was nearly $77 million in child care funding.

More than $10 million in funding will support those who provide direct daily care to adults with intellectual disabilities, children in need of protection, plus supports for families. This includes foster families and CBOs that deliver day programs and residential services to people with intellectual disabilities and provide family-focused services.

With continued funding in this year’s budget, two new major hospitals – Saskatchewan Hospital North Battleford and Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital – are on track to be open by the end of next year.

In this budget, there are no increases to tax rates. Low personal and corporate income tax rates remain the same with no increases to Education Property Tax or Provincial Sales Tax rates.

We understand how competitive taxes help to attract people, businesses and investment to Saskatchewan. Saskatchewan is projected to have the fourth highest growth in the country in 2018 and third highest in 2019, according to private sector forecasts.

Competitive taxes and targeted incentives support continued diversification and growth in Saskatchewan’s economy.

The 2018-19 Saskatchewan Budget includes $413 million of direct support to municipalities and $123 million for municipal infrastructure; increases funding to STEP – the Saskatchewan Trade and Export Program to expand the province’s export markets; and provides $2.7 million for infrastructure, including Crown corporations, to support the growing province.

This year’s budget also includes new growth tax incentives – the Saskatchewan Value-added Agriculture Incentive and the Saskatchewan Technology Start-up Incentive – to encourage investment, diversify the economy and create jobs.

Faced with significant challenges, including resource revenue decline of more than $1 billion due in large part to low oil and potash prices, our Government initiated a three-year plan to control and carefully manage spending and achieve a balanced budget in 2019-20.

One of the main goals of our three-year budget plan is to reduce Saskatchewan’s reliance on resource revenue, and that plan is on track. Non-renewable resource revenue now accounts for just 10% of the province’s total revenue, down from a high of 32% in 2008-09.

This year’s budgeted deficit is $365 million in 2018-19. A return to balance is forecast for 2019-20 with a modest surplus of $6 million. Higher surpluses of $108 million and $212 million respectively are projected for 2020-21 and 2021-22.

Balance ensures long-term sustainability and continued investments in infrastructure. Improved revenue stability, diversified economy, less dependence on resource revenue. This supports our Government’s vision to ensure that Saskatchewan is the best place in Canada – to live, work, start a business, to get an education and raise a family, and to build a life.

Our government’s plan to keep Saskatchewan on track includes controlling spending, delivering high quality services for Saskatchewan people, no tax rate increases, and measures to keep our economy strong to return our province to balance in 2019-20.

Local Business Helps Family in Need Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Local business Phobia Auto Repair recently held a giveaway via their Facebook page to help a person or family in need of vehicle repairs. This particular giveaway involved a partnership with Wagner, Moog and Monroe for work to be done on a vehicle in need of brakes, suspension and steering work.

After receiving numerous comments and shares on the original post, Steve Cusson, the owner/operator of Phobia Auto Repair had the difficult job of looking through all of the suggestions and deciding which person would be receiving the giveaway. “I didn’t have a criteria for the draw, I just wanted to pick someone that needed it,” Cusson explained.

Through the post, Cusson learned about Melissa Luff, a young woman from Dalmeny who was diagnosed with cancer in October of 2017. A trip to emergency for a stomach ache in September led to the discovery of a cancerous tumor the size of a football that had ruptured. Recently, Luff discovered that the cancer has now moved into her lymph nodes.

Luff, a mother of three children ages 6, 7 and 11, received news that she had six months to live this past January. In light of the news, Luff’s husband is now staying home from work in order to care for Melissa and the children.

Cusson met with Melissa’s husband on April 1st and looked over the vehicle that was being used to make trips to and from the hospital and to transport the children. Upon the inspection, the staff at Phobia Auto Repair could see that the vehicle was in desperate need of new brakes and suspension. Cusson, who is also a father, knew that this would make a big difference for the family. “I wouldn’t want to cart my kids around in a vehicle where the brakes were metal on metal and with everything that they have going on, they are unable to buy a new car. I come from nothing, so I know what a tough time is like. It is a heartbreaking situation,” said Cusson.

The family brought the car in on Thursday, April 12th at 9am, received a ride home from Cusson and by 4:30, Cusson was heading back to Dalmeny to pick up the family and send them on their way with their newly repaired vehicle. The total work done was an estimated $3700.

Although the donation from Steve, the crew at Phobia Auto Repair and Wagner, Moog and Monroe will make a huge difference for the family, they are still in need of some help to prepare for funeral costs and to help the family financially in the coming months. 2018 May Council Meeting Dates

The City of Martensville encourages residents, for which their lane is a secondary means of access to their property, to limit their usage during the spring thaw period. Heavy or repetitive vehicle usage during spring thaw and wet conditions can cause further rutting and reduce drainage. This limits the ability of crews to conduct maintenance on the lanes in a timely manner and increases the amount of materials and time required to reshape lanes.

Plastic film will be removed as an acceptable material in residential recycling bins effective immediately. Plastic film includes grocery bags, sandwich bags, cling wrap and similar items that can be ‘stretched’. These items are also usually marked HDPE (2) or LDPE (4).

Please consider using reusable shopping bags to help our landfills and environment.

City Council Returns to City Hall Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The City of Martensville held their last City Council meeting for April 2018 on Tuesday, April 17th. This was the first meeting that was located back within Council Chambers at City Hall following the water main break that flooded City Hall in October of 2017.

Dave Bosch, the Director of Recreation/Community Services brought a ‘Request for Decision’ to Council regarding the 2018 Sask Lotteries Grant Funding Allocation. Each year, the City receives funding that comes from proceeds from lottery ticket sales and the total amount received is based on per capita formula. The total received for 2018 is based on Martensville at $8.58 per capita with a population of 7,716 for a total of $66,203 and RM of Corman Park for $7,500 of funding, for a total of $73,703, the same amount received in 2017.

Once funding requests are received, a proposed funding list is created, which includes all requests, a description of the request and grant amount requested. According to Bosch’s report, “The proposed funding allocation is based on the organization’s project and what benefits to the organization and community it serves, number of people served, and finally whether it meets the criteria as established by the Sask Lotteries Trust Fund.” Within the Saskatchewan Lotteries guidelines, it is stated that 30% of the funding must be allocated towards Targeted Projects which includes; seniors, youth at risk, handicapped accessibility, low income families, etc. The remaining amount is then distributed among community groups/associations and community projects/ programs sponsored by Recreation Services. This year, the City of Martensville received an additional 10 applications from Community Organizations. Bosch added that this funding is distributed to a large number of local sport, recreation and service groups to enhance their organizational operations. A portion of the funding is allocated towards city projects as well. Once the allocated amounts are determined, each recipient will receive a letter notifying them of the amount being awarded to their organization. The funding list was presented to City Council, and was approved. Those receiving funding will be notified shortly.

City Council also reviewed the lease agreement between the City of Martensville and Ecole Holy Mary Catholic School. Council was asked to authorize the Mayor and City Manager to sign the agreement. This was approved.

Prior to Council going ‘In-Camera’ Mayor Muench asked Leah Sullivan, the Director of Corporate Services, to review the bylaw amendments that were listed on the agenda. The first was a modification to the Property Tax Bylaw, which includes the annual update for the mill rate, as well as a change to the base tax for the purpose of a future recreation facility from $25/property to $100/property. There are no changes to the commercial property mill rate or to the education mill rate for 2018.

Muench Represents Saskatchewan in Florida Janine Hayward, Martensville Messenger

Baseball seems so far in the future with this terrible weather, but Adlai Muench of Martensville was part of a provincial team of players that travelled to Vero Beach Florida over the Easter break to play against American teams. Muench was scouted as one of the top thirty U18 baseball players in the Province and attended an invitational tryout at Leakos Field in Saskatoon in early September 2016. The team is coached by Greg Brons and focuses on those athletes that will graduate in 2019. In the fall they extended their season by travelling to Peoria, Arizona to practice and play teams of their same caliber. In Florida, at Historic Dodger Town, the Saskatchewan players faced teams from New York, Kentucky and Vermont. They proved to be quite competitive opponents as all the games were very close. It was a round robin format that was set up more like an ID camp of these higher caliber of players. Coach Brons and his coaches are using this as an opportunity to finalize their roster to 18 players for the U18 team. This team will participate in the Canada Cup in August.

Muench fared quite well in Florida, batting just over 600 with 3 RBI’s and a triple.

On defense Muench is a left fielder with the team. He is currently playing his second year with the Saskatoon Midget AAA Giants. The Giants play tournaments in Alberta, North Dakota and Wyoming so he will get other opportunities to see high level international teams. “I love playing ball at this level and I have had some pretty great experiences”, commented Muench. “It’s great getting to play against other players who are so talented.”

He goes on to comment how his time with Team Saskatchewan gives him an opportunity to improve his skills.

THIS WEEK IN SPORTS

The NHL Playoffs are finally underway and they are living up to the hype. As of Monday afternoon here is how things are going so far. Pittsburgh and Philadelphia have been trading blowouts through three games of the series. Game one was all Penguins and looked to have an easy series ahead of them as they rolled to a 7-0 bashing of the Flyers.

Philly bounced back in game two with a 5-1 win to even the series at 1-1 but when the series moved back to Philadelphia, the Pens responded with a 5-1 win of their own. It’s not often you see a 7-0 game one turn into a great series, but that’s what is happening in this round one battle of Pennsylvania. The Winnipeg Jets jumped out to a 2-0 series lead after a pair of wins (3-2, 4-1) in Winnipeg but when home ice shifted to Minnesota the Wild chased Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck after scoring 6 goals on 22 shots. The Jets fell 6-2 in game three as the Wild cut the series in half, making it 2-1 Winnipeg. The LA Kings have found themselves in a deep hole to the newest team in the league. The Vegas Golden Knights are up 3-0 on the Kings but it hasn’t been as lop-sided as you might think. Game one was a defensive nail biter that Vegas held onto for a 1-0 win. Game two needed double overtime for the Golden Knights to take a 2-1 win, and when the series went to LA, Vegas waited until the third before burying three goals to jump ahead to a 3-2 victory and take a 3-0 stranglehold on the series. The Metropolitan leading Washington Capitals have quickly found themselves down two games to none to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The series has been a wild one though with both games so far needing an extra period. Artemi Panarin gave the Jackets a 4-3 overtime win in game one while Sergei Bobrovski stole the show with 54 saves in game two en route to a 5-4 overtime victory to take a 2-0 series lead. The Toronto Maple Leafs offence seems to have screeched to a halt while the top line of the Bruins has been unstoppable. Boston’s line of Bergeron, Marchand, and Pasternak has put up an astounding 20 points in the first two games of the series including a record breaking 6-point night in game two for David Pasternak (3G, 3A). Auston Matthews has yet to score a point for the Leafs, who have only managed four goals in the series with losses of 5-1 and 7-3. Hopefully the trip back to Toronto can boost the Leafs spirits in what is a crucial game three for the young squad. Tampa Bay has a 2-0 lead over the New Jersey Devils, and the Nashville Predators hold a 2-0 lead against the Colorado Avalanche in the two mostly predictable series’. However, both first place teams have given up more than they’d liked and these games can change on a dime. Finally, in the battle of California, Northern Cali has the upper hand over Southern Cali as the San Jose Sharks are up 2-0 on the Anaheim Ducks. This series has definitely been the most physical of them all and whoever comes out on top is going to be battered and bruised for round two.

Residents Express Concern at RCMP Town Hall Meeting Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Staff Sergeant Rob Eyre, Constable Jay Slack, Sergeant Vaughn Allcock and Sergeant Chris Cisecki of the Warman and Martensville RMCP were on hand for a ‘town hall’ style meeting on Wednesday, April 11th at North Ridge Community Centre in Martensville. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss their annual performance plan with the community. Meetings such as these were held in numerous local communities that the RCMP work within including; Delisle, Warman, Radisson, Corman Park (held in Dalmeny) and Martensville. The local RCMP has plans to host these meetings every six months to help with public engagement and allow area residents to ask questions and express concerns.

At the Martensville meeting, with approximately twenty people in attendance, Sgt. Rob Eyre began the evening explaining how the RCMP had recently met with City Council to review their priorities for the community. He then proceeded to discuss how police visibility is a high priority for them and with this increased visibility, they have seen positive results. Sgt. Cisecki then spoke in regards to the comparison of stats from previous years, they have found that there is a 22% decrease in mischief, a 24% decrease in theft under $5000, a 40% drop in break and enters and a decrease in total calls for service. “We have the statistics to show that we are definitely out there,” Cisecki said.

Currently, the RCMP has two School Resource Officers that visit the numerous schools within the area, with plans for Warman to fund a third one this fall. The officers will all work together to educate students from a young age, which according to Eyre is a national priority. “My expectation for the School Resource Officer is to be engaged in as many community events as possible within the community.

Anything we can be involved in, we will be involved in,” Eyre explained.

During the meeting, it was also brought up that the RCMP requires “intelligence reports” from the public in order to have as much information as possible. Allcock added to this by stating, “we have yet to solve an unreported crime.” Several in attendance commented about the shortage of officers covering such a large area and to this, Eyre responded that the number of officers they have is “driven by statistics” and that “more files, and the busier they are equals more officers.”

Other concern from the crowd was speeding on residential streets, which RCMP responded to by stating that if residents report the area of concern, they can report it and the local RCMP will ensure that they have an officer cover the problem area.

Cisecki commented that area residents that want to contribute to crime watch within the area can join the newly formed Martensville Neighborhood Watch, which Warman has seen success with. Eyre noted that the RCMP recently had “lock it or lose it” cards created for Neighborhood Watch members to use as a reminder to residents to ensure their vehicles and property is safely secured.

Members also discussed their working relationship with Traffic Services, Saskatoon Police Services and Conservation Officers, with Eyre commenting that, “we have a fantastic working relationship with them, they assist us, and we assist them.” They also mentioned the addition of an officer working on a pedal bike, noting that at night, criminals can hear a vehicle coming and get out of sight, where with a pedal bike, it allows for an officer to move more stealthily.

We all fared better in the 2018-19 budget compared with a year ago and notwithstanding that this is still very much an austerity budget, rural Saskatchewan especially fared better.

Consider that the Saskatchewan Party government found an extra $14 million for RCMP policing plus an extra $5 million for rural crime strategy. If we are going to move forward from the Gerald Stanley verdict and other divisive events, it begins with understanding that there is a real-life problem with rural crime. And the government stepped up to address those problems in budgets.

The 2018-19 also addressed other issues critical to rural Saskatchewan including $180,000 a year for the next three years for funding for Animal Protection Services of Saskatchewan that will police the new Saskatchewan Animal Protection Act.

There has been $258 million set aside to fund AgriStability, AgriInvest, Western Livestock Price Insurance and Crop Insurance. Also, there’s $31.8 million for agriculture research budget and increased funding in the Ag-West Bio and Food Centre.

Rural municipalities will receive $68 million - less money, compared with nearly $73 million last year. This is directly attributable to the reduction in the municipal revenue pool. For example, Yorkton will get $2.88 million this year compared with $3.08 million last year. Melville gets $800,000 compared with $860,000 last year.

Highways still fared well with its $924 million in infrastructure spending. That will include the ongoing twinning of Hwy 7 between Vanscoy and Delisle, twinning and passing place on Hwy 6 and 39 between Regina and Estevan, passing lanes on Hwy 4 between North Battleford and Cochin, plans for passing lanes on Hwy 7 between Rosetown and the Alberta border and on Hwys 9 and 10 between Melville and Canora and repaving Hwy 5 between Hwy 2 and Saskatoon. Also scheduled are 100 kilometres of upgrades including 24 kilometres of Hwy 4 between Val Marie and Cadillac, 25 kilometres between Hwy 18 and Willow Bunch, 21 kilometres on Hwy 255 south and west of Tobin Lake. What this means in budget terms is a steady commitment to rural Saskatchewan infrastructure.

One might argue that rural Saskatchewan isn’t getting its share of capital spending that includes a whopping $1.6 billion in Sask. Party’s capital plan spending this year followed by nearly a $1.8 billion capital spending commitment last year.

Let us be clear that one of the reasons we are seeing an additional $2.3-billion in public debt (it will be close to $20 billion by the end of 2019) is all this capital spending that is going to things like the Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon and bypass and Global Transportation Hub in Regina.

That said, it is often rural people and companies working on the building on these projects and regardless of where highways or interchange projects are located (including the new Saskatchewan Hospital in North Battleford we all benefit.)

Let us also be clear that this is likely all the Saskatchewan Party government could do this year under the current circumstances. We are still seeing a $366 million deficit that would have been higher were it not for the offset of pension liabilities reducing costs.

The Sask. Party government also had to tend to other spending priorities in often overlooked areas. This included $700,000 full HIV drug coverage, funding for every child six years old or younger with Autism Spectrum Disorder and $11 million more for mental health initiatives.

This was all accomplished under the government’s theme of getting back to balanced books. The government isn’t there yet, but it has made strides without having to raise taxes. (Taxing used cars worth more than $5,000 is about the only tax increase.)

We may not be back “on track” as the budget boasts. But we may be getting there.

Local Clinic Prepares for Arrival of Two New Physicians

Dr. Allison Adamus of the Martensville Collective Health and Wellness clinic is looking forward to the addition of two new doctors to the local practice in the upcoming months. Dr. Siwa Obishai and Dr. Matthew Wong will be joining the local practice, with Obishai coming from the United Kingdom and Dr. Wong coming from the Saskatoon Family Medicine Program. “The addition of two new doctors is just amazing and it means great things for our community and for our clinic and the services that we are able to provide,” Adamus said. Growing the clinic has been a goal of Adamus’ since inception in November of 2014, so to see that coming to fruition is an exciting moment for both the clinic and the community. “Everything that we do is a process and to do it right and to do it well always takes time so we can make sure that what we do bring in is sustainable.”

With this arrival, Adamus is happy to be able to serve more local residents, and to provide convenient healthcare within their own community, and not be required to commute to and from Saskatoon for doctor’s appointments.

Dr. Obishai will be the first to begin taking patients, as he will be joining the local clinic in mid-May. Adamus noted that residents may remember Martensville Collective Health and Wellness posting about Dr. Obishai on their Facebook page this past October. The potential doctor worked within the clinic for a week as he was touring various locations for possible employment. “He spent some time with us, and then toured other places and in the end, he decided that our community was the right one for him and his family,” Adamus said, adding that, “our community worked hard. They were very welcoming and he had a really good showing of what it is like to be a part of this city.”

Patients will have to wait until closer to the end of summer for the arrival of Dr. Wong, who will be coming to the community as a result of the fruits of labour Dr. Adamus and her crew put in approximately three to four years ago to have a contract changed within the Saskatoon Health Region to encourage doctors to practice within Martensville,

despite it’s close vicinity to Saskatoon. “This is the first year that we have been eligible as a community and we were really lucky to have Dr. Wong join us under the new contract,” explained Adamus. Proud of the amount of work they did, the research and contacting government officials, Adamus is looking forward to some big changes coming to the local clinic in upcoming years. “With the addition of these two new physicians, hopefully that means we can branch out and start offering some other services that we have had our eyes on as well,” added Adamus. Although nothing is ready to be announced at this time, area residents can expect to see exiting announcements for MCHW in the future. “I am looking forward to things to come and I am excited for what this means for our community. I am so grateful to be a part of a community that pulls together and works with us to make things happen,” said Adamus.

With two doctors currently working at Martensville Collective and Wellness, this addition means they will be able to double their patient intake total.

As the arrival of Dr. Obishai nears, MCHW has begun contacting patients that were already on the waiting list.

Some time ago, they stopped adding patients to the list, as there was no anticipated arrival of any physicians. Once all of the names on the waiting list have been contacted, MCHW will begin taking information for new patients to join Dr. Obishai. Those interested in becoming a patient at MCHW can begin contacting the clinic as of May 1st to have their name added to the patient list. No patients will be accepted before this time.

Near the end of summer, plans to extend the walk-in clinic hours are already in place in order to better accommodate the community.

New Horizons Senior Receives Large Donation From Housing Organization Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

The board of the New Horizon’s Senior Centre in Martensville had quite the surprise on Wednesday, April 11th when Ron Kalyniuk, the Vice President of the Martensville Housing Development (MHD) presented them with a cheque. Originally, it was believed the amount donated would range around the $300 mark; however, the final amount was an incredible $2,704.43.

The money was donated to the MHD initially by Affinity Credit Union approximately five years ago when the group was in the planning stages for the Chateau Villa development in Martensville. “It came through Credit Union to be used for discretionary use wherever we needed it. Once everything was said and done, there was money left over and we wanted to do something with it,” Kalyniuk explained. The Credit Union provided the money to be used for senior housing, and since there is no other organizations for this cause in place currently within Martensville, the MHD decided that the seniors at New Horizon’s would benefit from this. “By donating here, we can still benefit the local seniors and we know it will be put to good use here.”

The MHD is currently dissolving, and therefore closing their accounts. According to Kalyniuk, the group may be established again in the future, but for now, they accomplished their goal of bringing a senior housing unit to Martensville.

The board at New Horizon’s, which meets the second Wednesday of each month, gathered for their regular monthly meeting following the donation. During this meeting, the ten person board discussed the various needs that the Seniors Centre requires and decided upon several uses for the donation. “We are grateful for any donation and were pleased when we thought it was going to be $300, we thought that was great, then to be told it was even more was quite the shock,” Doreen Emmerson explained.

It was decided that a portion of the money would be used to refinish one of the pool tables, upgrade the microwave and purchase a wireless printer for administrative purchases. “These are purchases that we would otherwise be unable to make, so the donation will really come in handy for us,” Emmerson added.

Curves Donates 300lbs of Food to Free Pantry

Throughout the year, the Martensville Curves location holds numerous initiatives to collect food or clothing items for those that are in need. In addition, current members were encouraged to join. “Something I did different this year was asked members to donate more protein based items because we are a strength training centre. I am very proud that we were able to donate 305 pounds,” owner/operator Wendy Staples commented.

We Are #Humboldt Strong

Numerous local residents, organizations, groups and more have come together in the recent weeks to show their support following the tragic accident involving the Humboldt Broncos bus on April 5th, 2018 near Tisdale, SK that took the lives of 16 people and injured 13 others.

Martensville business Crossfit 3126 hosted their first annual “Bronco Strong” workout of the day, or WOD. The event notification stated that “this is one of those things in life that’s bigger than just a workout.” The business also encouraged people to donate to the Humboldt Broncos crowdfunding page, as owners/operators Reg and Carly LePage have had their own personal experience with how these pages can help during difficult times. “The unimaginable loss is felt by everyone, and will be a day Saskatchewan remembers forever,” the owners said. Prior to the event, a moment of silence was held in honour of those involved in the accident.

On Sunday, April 15th, people of all ages took part in the “Play for Humboldt” weekend, initiated by Saskatoon Sports Tourism. The idea behind this was to have residents from across the province gather to participate in a game of street hockey. In Martensville, groups congregated on the streets to participate in a friendly game of street hockey, with local businesses even stopping by to contribute hot chocolate on the windy, rainy afternoon.

One local resident wanted to provide a chance for people to pay their respects to Humboldt Broncos captain Logan Schatz, who had previously lived in Martensville for 2.5 years and had attended Martensville High School.

Melissa Pike-Klisowsky organized a street hockey game for the children in the neighborhood to honour Schatz’s life.

“Many of these kids that knew Logan were not able to attend his service and Melissa thought this would be a great way to involve the kids and honour him,” Georjeana Christianson told the Messenger. The puck dropped at 1pm, which is the same time the celebration of life for Schatz began.

In addition to the “Play for Humboldt” weekend, there have been numerous other initiatives to help those reeling from the aftermath of the devastating incident such as #PutYourSticks out, where people placed hockey sticks or other items recognizing other members of the Broncos’ organization that perished as a result of the accident on their porches to show their respect for those involved in the accident. On Thursday, April 12th, people across the world donned a jersey to honour the Broncos organization.

Last week, the funerals for the 16 fallen members of the organization began being held, with thousands attending to pay their respects.

Many of the surviving members of the accident suffered severe injuries and one week following the accident, ten people remained in hospital.

Following the accident, a crowdfunding page was established to help the families of those affected cover expenses incurred during this heartbreaking time. Since the page was established on April 6th, over $13.8 million has been raised.

The Broncos organization, where the money will be directed, has plans to make an announcement in the near future about their plans to distribute the funds.
