Local Business Uses Safety Challenge As a Fun Way to Educate Workers Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Geransky Brothers Construction has been a staple within the community of Martensville since the business first opened in 1975. Initially, the company was started by Ed & Irvin Geransky, and in 1977, Dennis Geransky joined his brothers. In more recent years, Dennis has begun handing the reins of the business down to his two sons Ryan and Corey, who have been working in the industry since they were both teenagers. Having worked their way up from the bottom, and learning the ropes in many different aspects of the industry, both Ryan and Corey feel as though their experience throughout the years has played a big part in preparing them to lead the company.

Both Ryan and Corey grew up in Martensville, and take great pride in running a family business within the community. A large part of that pride comes from providing a wide variety of jobs for residents of Martensville and surrounding areas, with many of their employees having worked at the company for ten or more years. “We have a really big core group of employees that have been here a long time, and with it being a smaller business, everyone is multi-faceted. We all work together really hard as a family and as a team unit,” Crystal Regier, the Office Manager at Geransky Brothers Construction, stated.

Each year, the company takes a look at the goals they wish to focus on, and for this year, one of the main areas of focus was on safety. Since the company’s inception, rules and regulations within the construction industry have seen many changes, and both Ryan and Corey feel as though it is important to ensure that both their employees, and the sub trades that they have working for them are educated and safe when on the jobsite. Through this, Regier came up with a fun way to encourage safety throughout the company in a fun and educational way and created a 21-Day Safety Challenge.

The 21-Day Safety Challenge includes a variety of educational opportunities, challenges and presentations and by partnerships created with various suppliers, there is a variety of prizes that can be won.

Five years ago, the company hired Safety Officer Geoff Brand, who has seen the benefits of this challenge firsthand. “It has been a really good way to convey the message and get points across. It helps encourage everyone to come together as a team instead of me coming to the site and telling them what to do,” Brand explained. Having worked as a police officer for 25 years, Brand noted that, “I could write up 15 tickets to someone and they were not going to stop speeding; however, by educating them on the subject, they tended not to speed as much.”

Geransky Brothers Construction has always taken big steps to ensure the safety of their workers and seven years ago became COR certified through the Saskatchewan Construction Safety Association. “With several different generations of people working here, the expectation of safety within the workplace is different for every generation.

Although we are core certified, trying to get everyone on the same page can prove to be a challenge. It was our goal for 2019 to really nail the safety aspect and this challenge was a unique approach to unify the generations, the sub-trades, employees and even our suppliers,” co-owner and Vice President, Ryan Geransky said.

Through the 21 day period, there have been on-site “toolbox talks”, numerous games, fun challenges, educational presentations from industry professionals, the fire department, representatives from safety associations and more. “We know safety is going to get stricter and there will be more enforcement on the jobsites as time goes on. For us, it is getting ahead of what we know is coming. It is tough though because you will often see competing companies not obeying the laws out there and our guys, who are working on the same developments, would ask why they have to do something if others don’t have to. Our goal is to have them stop focusing on what others are doing, and focus on our goal, which is to get the job done, do it safely, efficiently and smart and to ensure that everyone gets home safe at the end of each day,” Corey Geransky, co-owner and Operations Manager, said.

Being a leader within the industry is important for both Ryan and Corey, and they are constantly working on new and innovative ideas. “If there are no progressions within a company, things can become stagnant and someone can come in and outdo you. Since I started, the way things get done then to now is almost night and day. There has been a lot of evolution within the industry and we try to stay ahead as much as we can,” explained Ryan.

Taking their ambition to be leaders within their industry, the company offers options to their customers that other companies are unable to provide. Most recently, Geransky Brothers Construction began using spray foam in residential foundations. “We always want to work towards using our products and our workers to the full potential.

We work to do things to get ahead in the industry and instead of being a follower, be a trailblazer. Our customers are the main priority and we want to be able to offer them the best option available, so it is our responsibility to do the research and stay ahead of the curve when it comes to all aspects; products, safety, efficiency; you name it,” Corey added.

Access to Private Property Through Open Spaces Bylaw Due to damage to City property and failure to remedy damages; the City has created the Access to Private Property Through Open Spaces Bylaw. The City Traffic Control and Waste Bylaws have also been rewritten to set the provisions to access private property through City land.

Access to Private Property Through Open Spaces Bylaw 2-2016 Permit required Any person or businesses that will be driving a vehicle or equipment over city open space to access private property are now required to apply for a permit prior to gaining access.

Section 6 (2) No person shall carry on the following activities in an open space area without a permit: (a) leave or store personal property; (b) set up a temporary shelter, tarp, canopy or other such device; (c) drive or arrange for a vehicle or equipment to be driven through an open space area; Traffic Bylaw – Dumping of Materials Dumping of material onto city streets is not permitted. Any material must be placed on the owner’s property unless permission is granted by the Director of Infrastructure and Planning or designate. Any person or any business who will be conducting work on or around city streets must setup a safe temporary traffic control zone.

Section 4 (f) Any person or company responsible for construction, construction equipment, or material within the highway/street must setup a safe temporary work traffic control zone. At the request of the Director of Infrastructure and Planning or designate a written work zone traffic control plan may be required prior to approval for installation and setup.

Waste Bylaw 18-2015 Work sites must have a bin/truck on site to dump their waste material into, so as to not leave material scattered around the work site or piled on the road way.

COFFEE WITH A COP The Warman Detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police received 155 calls for service from April 8, 2019 to April 15, 2019. received extensive damage. Further investigation is being done to determine the cause of the fire. There were no Complaints of Erratic Drivers Near injuries.

Police conducted patrols of the area, but did not locate any vehicles matching the description provided. No further complaints were received.

The caller advised that the vehicle pulled into a business in Warman. Police made patrols of the area, but were unable to locate any vehicles matching the description provided.

Four Houses Receive Extensive Damage in Martensville April 14, 2019 at 4:10 a.m. Police received a complaint of a house fire in Martensville. Police attended the scene along with Martensville Fire. Four houses

PEOPLE Complaint of Assault at Business in Martensville April 14, 2019 at 1:10 p.m. Police received a complaint of an assault at a business in Martensville. The caller advised that they saw a male and a female argueing and assaulting each other. Police attended the business and arrested the 33 year old male and 25 year old female from Saskatoon.

They were both lodged in police cells until they were sober. The female was released on documents for an upcoming court date on assault related charges. There were no injuries.

SPORTS Badminton Competition Heats Up

April has been a busy month within the Central Valley Athletic Conference (CVAC), with junior and senior badminton playoffs taking place. Junior playoffs began on Monday, April 8th, with 8 sites hosting four schools to determine which two teams in each of the five categories would move on to the second round of playoffs on Wednesday, April 10th.

The semi-finals were hosted at Warman high at the Warman Legends Centre, and following the intense competition, the finals were hosted on Friday, April 12th at the Martensville Athletic Pavilion. Langham, Perdue, VCA, and MHS advanced at least three teams to the finals with a number of other schools also sending teams to the MAP to compete in the championship.

In boys’ singles, Davis from VCA defeated Dawson from MHS 15-9, 15-7 to capture the 2019 championship. Mixed doubles saw Kael and Kayla from Martensville High School against Mesele and Anna of Hague. Hague won the first round, with Martensville coming back to take the second.

Hague came out on top in a very close third match, winning 15-11 and capturing the title.

The senior playoffs took place the second week of April, with 25 schools sending athletes looking to advance to the provincial championship in Swift Current. Play began Wednesday, April 10th, with six sites hosting four schools to advance competitors to the finals in Martensville on April 13th. In boys’ singles, Nathan from Martensville High School defeated Adam from Perdue 21-17, 21-16 to capture the 2019 title.

Congratulations to all athletes for their hard work and dedication. You should all be proud of yourselves.

Another Successful Plastic Bat & Ball Tournament Wraps Up

Martensville Messenger weekend tournament saw 24 teams participating and countless attendees come out to support the event.

“Another successful Plastic Bat & Ball in the books. Thank you to everyone that came out and supported this event and a huge thank you to all of the hard working volunteers that make this event possible,” the league posted on their Facebook page. The money is going towards building a deck on the back of the building that holds the bar and seating area, and an asphalt walk way between there and the bathrooms/ concession building to make it more stroller and wheelchair accessible.

Martensville Girls Help Represent Saskatchewan at the Western Canada Ringette Championship and Greyson with the rest of the Saskatoon Saints U14AA Ringette Team represented Saskatchewan at the Western Canada Ringette Championships in St. Albert, AB from March 27-30th.

The Saints won the provincial title on March 3rd by sweeping the three game series versus Buffalo Plains Rush U14AA.

The girls had a great weekend in St. Albert and fell short in a couple of games resulting in an 8th place finish.

This year the girls have played tournaments in Manitoba and Saskatchewan with exhibition games in Alberta as well.

Norum has played the game since she was five and Greyson recently joined ringette.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have broken a lot of records this season and they have also broken another one in the playoffs, but this time it’s not a good one. Tampa Bay was swept in the first round by the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Lightning would be the first team to have the best regular season record and lose the first four games of their postseason.

Columbus has won all four games of the series (4-3, 5-1, 3-1, 7-3) and closed out the series on April 16th. Another team with the possibility of getting swept was the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Pens also lost all four games to the New York Islanders (4-3 OT, 3-1, 4-1, 3-1) and got swept on April 16th at home. The defending champion Washington Capitals have won their first two games of the series against the Carolina Hurricanes (4-2, 4-3 OT). The Caps won both of their games at home and headed to Raleigh, North Carolina for the next two games in the series where they took a loss on Monday night 5-0.

Toronto took the first game in their series in Boston 4-1 and the Bruins came back and grabbed game two also with a 4-1 score.

The series headed to Toronto for the next two games where Toronto came out on top 3-2. San Jose won the first game against the Vegas Golden Knights 5-2 in San Jose before losing the next two games (5-3, 6-3).

The Sharks looked to even the series at 2-2 on April 16th in Vegas but suffered a heartbreaking loss 5-0. The Winnipeg Jets, St. Louis Blues series had been a little backwards as the home team had lost every game so far. The Blues took games one and two (2-1, 4-3) and then the Jets won the first game in St. Louis (6-3) but Winnipeg evened the series with a win on April 16th in St. Louis of 2-1.

The other two series’ have been the closest with both of them being tied 1-1 and each having one game go to overtime. Dallas took the first game in Nashville 3-2 while the Preds won the next one in overtime 2-1. The series headed to Dallas for game 3 on April 15th where Nashville came up with the win to lead the series 2-1.

The final series of the NHL Playoffs started with the Calgary Flames shutting out the Colorado Avalanche 4-0 in Calgary. Game two went into overtime where Nathan MacKinnon potted the winner to put the Avs in the win column 3-2. The series shifted to Denver on April 15th where Colorado took the lead in the best-of-seven series 2-1.

Moe Must Offer Better Alternative

New Democrat Opposition leader Ryan Meili should have attended the Rally Against the Carbon Tax protest.

If for no other reason, he should have been there politically strategic reason of demonstrating that he is willing to listen to the concerns of those who he purports to want to lead.

Maybe there weren’t many votes to be gained by the NDP leader at that event, but he surely has lost even more votes in rural Saskatchewan by not going.

It is now hugely problematic for Meili to have defined the event as a “yellow vest” rally before it even happened and then to have to admit later that organizer Jason LeBlanc and others did a pretty good job of keeping out the unwanted yellow vest element.

Moreover, Meili apologists who insist their NDP leader shouldn’t have went to the rally because it was a thinly veiled political event seem to be missing a couple important points.

While the crowd was solidly Sask. Party/ Conservative supporters, it would have been helpful for Meili to be there to say he doesn’t support this particular federal carbon tax either.

That Meili chose not to go after suggesting this was a yellow vest event and that yellow vesters are racist and anti-immigrant was problematic enough. To not go and to then allow Premier Scott Moe the political opportunity to tell the crowd why you’re not there is dumb politics.But there is another very different reason why Meili should have been there.

Meili - or someone else - needs to challenge Meili Moe on what the Sask. Party government intends to do about reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.This is something that many people in this province also would prefer the Premier ignore.

There are those who range from downright deniers that the climate is changing to those who suggest that change is totally a natural occurrence to those who suggest that whatever change is happening has little to do with human activity and that more carbon dioxide is actually a good thing.

Those who suggest any of the above are ignoring the best science available - science supported by agencies like NASA that tells us there is a global warming threat and that threatening aspect is a result of human activity.

Interestingly, this is also the position of Prairie Resilience - provincial government’s “made-in-Saskatchewan response” to the carbon tax. It commits to "output-based performance standards" that is also a carbon price model to be applied to Saskatchewan’s heaviest admitters.

Yet the most Moe would say about the GHG/global warming is the following:

“In Saskatchewan, we accept that climate change is happening and we even accept that humans are contributing to that,” Moe told the 1,000 protestors that were part of 700-truck convey. “What we don’t accept is that a carbon tax is in any way an effective way to actually deal with that.”

As has been stated in this space before, there is every reason to suspect that this federal carbon tax will not work.

But what then, is the alternative that the province is offering?

It’s all well and good for Moe to suggest that "farmers are some of the strongest environmentalists in the world" or that we aren’t getting enough credit for carbon sinks and zero tillage $1.6 billion invested in SaskPower’s carbon capture and storage. But the facts remain that GHGs are still increasing in Saskatchewan and GHGs are a worldwide problem.

We can all say this doesn’t matter because Saskatchewan - and even Canada - represents a small fraction of the world problem when it comes to GHG emissions. But what this province can’t say is that it’s doing its part. As a leader, Moe has commit to doing our part.

Saskatchewan workers and businesses continue to drive job growth across the province. Nearly 10,000 new jobs in the past year means Saskatchewan people can look forward to more opportunities for their families and communities.

In March – before the Trudeau carbon tax came into effect – Saskatchewan posted the second-lowest unemployment rate in the nation, its lowest since August 2015. While this is good news, the federal government’s carbon tax, along with Bills C-69 and C-48, threaten jobs and the momentum our economy continues to show.

The recent Regina Rally Against the Carbon Tax was an opportunity to stand up for the industries that drive growth, to say no to the Trudeau carbon tax, no to the federal government’s harmful anti-pipeline and anti-tanker bills, and to stand up for Saskatchewan. That’s what the rally was about, despite what the NDP is suggesting.

Even now that the rally is over, the NDP Leader continues to repeat bizarre allegations that the rally was about spreading hatred against minorities. It is unbelievable how far the Leader of the Opposition is willing to go to discredit and smear the hard-working women and men standing up for jobs and opportunity for our families.

If the NDP were to form government, our progress would be hindered. Not only does the NDP support the jobkilling Trudeau carbon tax, their Leader would also send our province into crippling debt with an additional $2.5 billion in new spending every year.

While the Saskatchewan NDP stands with Justin Trudeau, you can count on your Saskatchewan Party MLAs to keep standing up for our province’s economy, our jobs and the industries that provide them, and for a brighter future for our families.

Consultations Underway on Future of Education

The future of education in Saskatchewan is the focus of a new online survey. Students, parents, educators and school staff are being encouraged to participate at saskatchewan.ca/government/public-consultations/provincialeducation-plan.

As engagement sessions with education partners occur, school divisions are also creating opportunities for parents and students to participate in person. The feedback provided will be used to help develop a provincial education plan that ensures schools are on the right path to meet the needs of students as we look toward the next decade.

Saskatchewan Volunteers Honoured

As part of National Volunteer Week, 15 worthy individuals from across the province (including Ben Buhler from Osler) were recently presented with Saskatchewan Volunteer Medals – an award given to extraordinary citizens for their outstanding contributions to the province.

Volunteers make a difference by giving back to their communities in a variety of ways. Saskatchewan communities, particularly in rural areas, rely heavily on volunteers to respond to emergency situations. These volunteers put themselves at risk to protect the safety and well-being of others, and to respond to mass tragedies.

The words thank you seem inadequate in expressing our gratitude for the service and peace of mind provided by volunteer firefighters, first responders and search and rescue members. In recognition of their contributions, the Government of Saskatchewan is introducing new tax credits beginning in the 2020 taxation year.

Individuals who perform at least 200 hours of eligible volunteer services in a year, as certified by the organization managing the volunteer services, will be able to claim a $3,000 tax credit amount. The Importance of Keeping Our Bodies Strong

Hello everyone! Now that our water and stretches are taken care of, it’s time to talk about the importance of keeping our bodies strong. Not like Arnold strong but strong and flexible enough to decrease the chances of needing help in our aging years with certain necessary movements that involve a toilet (just one example!).

Maintaining strength as we age does not mean ripped muscles, six packs or bulging biceps. It means a strong core to perform daily activities, a strong back to support our strong core and decrease chances of injury. We need strong legs and arms to do all of the walking, running, hiking, biking, dancing, swimming or whatever activity you love doing with ease and enjoyment!

The benefits of maintaining strength include but are certainly not limited to: 1.

Increase bone density 2.

Injury prevention 3.

Increased posture 4.

Improved movements 5.

Confidence in daily activities and active hobbies 6.

Stops tendons and ligaments from weakening

To fully receive the ongoing benefits of strength training is not about being in the gym every day. It’s about committing daily to something that provides you with joy, confidence and of course strength. Strength training looks different for everybody. Going to the gym is great, classes are incredible, body weight exercises are wonderful, getting together with a friend and doing a buddy workout is so fun! Do whatever works for you but do some form of strength training for your body and mind. I promise, you might dislike it in the beginning but if you consistently show up for yourself, you will be amazed by you! Also, looking back at how far you have come after months and years of regular work is not only powerful but you won’t believe you ever didn’t do this.

If this is intimidating, please check out our local gyms. We have a variety to choose from and each offer their own unique style and I assure you, one of them is a fit for you! If you fear the beginning, we all did. Keep going! Go, do what you can, keep moving and get into a routine. The tweaks and progress take time and feeling weak, defeated and out of shape are NORMAL, go anyway! It will come. If you can’t afford a membership, there are free videos online or go to our library and borrow books or videos on strength training. It’s time to get up and move!

Kelly Block Speaks On Bill C-69

Kelly Block, the Conservative Shadow Minister for Transportation, released the following statement regarding her attendance at the Senate hearings on Bill C-69, being held in Saskatoon:

“The testimony heard by the Senate committee from so many industry experts shows clearly that Bill C-69 is a flawed piece of legislation that ignores the role of science and is a step backward for Canada’s natural resource development.

Industry experts have repeatedly stated that Bill C-69 will result in significant regulatory uncertainty across nearly all natural resource sectors.

The oil and gas industry has warned that, if Bill C-69 is passed into law in its current form, no further pipelines will be built in Canada. This does not mean that oil production will cease, but instead that oil and gas will be transported to market via alternative means.

Already, we are seeing a dramatic increase in the use of rail and trucking to transport heavy crude. There are significant consequences to this development. While our Conservative Caucus has the greatest respect for the rail and trucking industries, there can be no doubt that transporting oil and gas by those means is less safe than transporting the same product by pipelines.

Furthermore, the transportation of oil and gas via rail and trucking displaces other products that need to be shipped to market as our infrastructure has finite capacity. Canadian farmers have recently faced difficulties in shipping their grain to market due to capacity issues. Should C-69 pass, such difficulties will become more commonplace.

Witnesses also testified that Bill C-69 makes dramatic and short-sighted changes to the Navigation Protection Act. These changes will significantly increase red tape for municipalities and businesses by adding rules and regulations that can be applied to any body of water large enough to float a kayak.

These new rules apply to any project that seeks “to construct, place, alter, rebuild, remove or decommission a work . . . in, on, over, under, through or across any navigable water”. These rules can be invoked by anyone, even if there is no reasonable expectation that they will be affected, thereby delaying a project significantly.

It has been clear for some time that C-69 is a damaging piece of legislation for our economy. The Senate hearings in Saskatoon have only served to reinforce that fact by highlighting the uncertainty that has been created, the $100 billion of cancelled investments, and the loss of jobs over the last two years.

A Conservative Government would repeal C-69 and implement an evidencebased approval process which removes politics from consideration while protecting the environment and developing our economy.”

Martensville Fire Department responded to a Structure Fire on Sunday April 14, 2019 at 3:16 a.m. The fire was located at 845 Glenview Cove in Martensville.

The home received severe damage along with damage to two houses on either side of the fire. The home had a basement suite. The occupant of the top floor was out prior to fire department arrival and the basement suite occupant escaped through a basement window. There were no injuries as a result of this fire.

MFD responded with two pumper trucks and a water tanker. First arriving crews found the house fully involved. The fire was called under control at 3:51 a.m.

Martensville Fire remained on scene to do salvage on over hall of the structure and to make sure all hot spots were extinguished.

Probable cause of the fire is careless disposal of smoking material.

Co-op Strike Ends Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

After five and a half months, Saskatoon Co-op workers are officially heading back to work as of Sunday, April 21 after accepting the terms of a tentative agreement on April 16th. Negotiations took place this past weekend, and on April 16th, members had a chance to vote during three different meetings held throughout the day. Once the votes were tallied, United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 1400 confirmed that 54 per cent of the workers voted in favor of the agreement.

The strike first began following UFCW Local 1400 members rejected an offer that included a two-tier wage system, lowering the wages of new employees by 65 per cent. At this time, workers had been without a contract for approximately two years. The strike affected an estimated 900 workers and Co-op locations within Saskatoon, Martensville, Warman, Colonsay and Watrous.

“At the end of the day, we came to an agreement that allows our Co-op to stay competitive while providing good jobs in our community,” Grant Wicks, CEO of Saskatoon Co-op, said. “We’re looking forward to serving our communities together with our employees as they transition back to work.”

The agreement was reached with the assistance of a mediator and is a seven-year agreement, which is retroactive to November 2016, that includes a two-tier wage scale, wage increases of two per cent per year for the duration of the contract, as well as a mechanism to reduce the gap between wage scales in years in which Saskatoon Co-op demonstrates financial success.

According to Saskatoon Co-op, they will be updating hours by location as business returns to normal at www.saskatoonco-op.crs.
