Country Mourns After Tragic Accident Claims Fifteen Lives Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

Communities, provinces, a country, the world – all were affected by the tragic accident that claimed the lives of fifteen individuals on Friday, April 6th. The accident, which took place at approximately 5pm on Highway 35 nearly 30 kms north of Tisdale, involved a semi-trailer unit and the bus carrying the Humboldt Broncos SJHL team.

The team was on their way to Nipawin to compete in a playoff game when the collision occurred. Numerous emergency personnel was on scene, including STARS Air Ambulance which airlifted multiple victims to Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon.

Those that lost their lives in the devastating accident include:

A candlelight vigil was held in Martensville on Sunday, April 8th at the Curling Rink, during the time that a vigil was being held in Humboldt, SK. In Martensville, those

that attended watched together as the vigil was aired live. The room was heavy with silence and heartbreak. Candle light danced along the ceiling and walls and soft sobbing could be heard throughout the room. Heads were bowed as prayers for those involved in the accident reverberated over the speakers. The scene in Martensville is one all too familiar throughout many communities, as thousands take time to reflect on the lives of all of those that were lost, and the lives of survivors that have been forever changed.

Following the accident, the hockey community, celebrities, political leaders, and complete strangers reached out to show their support for a community reeling in the aftermath of such devastation. Millions of dollars have been raised to help families throughout this tragic time.

As of April 2, twelve individuals remained in hospital; four in critical condition, four in serious condition and four in stable condition.

MCRP Donates Substantial Amount Towards Multipurpose Facility Janine Hayward, Martensville Messenger

The Martensville Community Recreation Project held their fourth annual hockey draft on Sunday April 8 at the North Ridge Center. All proceeds from this event go towards getting a second ice surface in Martensville. The MCRP committee is a grass roots organization who are looking to raise money for a second ice surface in Martensville but this project has also grown into a multipurpose facility that could include a turfed surface, retail space, fitness area and perhaps offices and board rooms. Jesse Reis, Chairman of the MCRP, commented that the Martensville City Council made a decision last November to commission a design for this new multi-purpose facility. Once plans are in place it makes the project more of a reality. The MCRP made a donation to Councillor Darren MacDonald from the City of Martensville for $150,000.00. This was money they have raised over the past years including the NHL drafts, 3 on 3 Tournament, Fun Run, Casino Nights and Street Hockey Tournaments.

Over 200 people attended the draft and were treated to a beef supper prepared by the Sports Page. There were 28 teams entered in the 2018-19 edition of the playoff draft and each team was made up of 8 individuals. For over an hour and a half the teams picked NHL players to see who will score the most points in the NHL playoffs. The winning team will win $5000, second place $2500, third $1000 and 4th place gets $560.

There was a special tribute given to the players, families, coaches and all those involved in the tragic Humboldt Bronco bus accident Friday night. All those in attendance honoured them with a minute of silence as this accident has touched so many in Humboldt, surrounding areas and farther. Hockey is a huge part of every small community in Saskatchewan.

Door prizes were given away to three lucky winners. Eecol Electric, National Refrigeration and RSL donated tool sets and jacket. D-Team Construction donated the gold package, hoodies and hats, and Labatts donated the Corona Mini Bar Fridge. The committee would like to thank everyone who came out and supported the MCRP for this great event. A huge thank you goes out to the Kinsmen Club for volunteering in the bar and ticket sales and to the lovely waitresses, Jessica and Cecilia who provided table service throughout the night. They would like to thank their sponsors Eecol Electric, National Refrigeration, RSL, D-Team Construction, Labatts and Sports Page and all local Martensville businesses, and private donations who have helped make the goal closer.

All the teams from this year will be invited back next year but the MCRP is always looking to grow this event every year. “As for community support, it has been great but the more people who attend our events puts us closer to our goal,” commented Reis. “We have worked hard to offer events that reach all the people in our city. Our next event is our Street Hockey Tournament on the Buster Days weekend and we will be doing the TUFF run again at the end of August.”

Lane Usage During Spring Thaw

The City of Martensville encourages residents, for which their lane is a secondary means of access to their property, to limit their usage during the spring thaw period. Heavy or repetitive vehicle usage during spring thaw and wet conditions can cause further rutting and reduce drainage. This limits the ability of crews to conduct maintenance on the lanes in a timely manner and increases the amount of materials and time required to reshape lanes.

Recycling/ Blue Bin Program Update

Plastic film will be removed as an acceptable material in residential recycling bins effective immediately. Plastic film includes grocery bags, sandwich bags, cling wrap and similar items that can be ‘stretched’. These items are also usually marked HDPE (2) or LDPE (4).

Please consider using reusable shopping bags to help our landfills and environment.

Martensville City Hall Set to Reopen to the Public on April 16th

After a lengthy period of repair and restoration, City Hall is set to open its doors to the public again on Monday April 16th at its 37 Centennial Dr. S location.

Martensville’s City Hall building has been closed for the past six months as a result of a major water main break that caused substantial flooding in the building and resulted in major damage throughout the building.

Restoration or repair of walls, flooring, furniture, millwork as well as mechanical and electrical systems were all part of the project to bring the building back to its former state.

Costs for clean-up, restoration and moving are covered through the City’s Insurance Policy and will have no negative impact on the City’s financial position or budget.

Since October 16th, City Hall has been operating at the former Super Valu grocery store located at 41 Centennial Dr. N adding many short-term measures in order to carry out day to day services, transactions and inquiries. Regular Council and Committee of the Whole meetings were conducted at the Canalta Hotel Conference Room.

A properly running vehicle to get us from point A to point B is something that we all require. Whether it is used for getting to and from work, running the kids to school or sporting events, or taking us on an adventure, if a vehicle is not running as it should be, it can cause major complication in our lives. Taking care of customers is exactly the reason that Trevor and Christa Read first established their business.

The Read’s purchased their first business in 2002, a three bay shop located in Langham. Trevor had been working at the business with the previous owner in the years prior, and when the option to purchase became available, the couple dove on the opportunity to be business owners, which had been a dream of theirs. “Something that we had always wanted to do was to own our own shop. Things just escalated from there and it took off pretty fast,” Trevor said.

After owning the Langham shop for 13 years, the young couple decided that they needed more of a challenge and decided that it was time to pursue bigger dreams.

Having moved to Martensville, and witnessing the growth that the community was seeing, they decided that it would be the perfect location for their next venture. In 2015, they officially took the next step and opened up their current shop within Martensville. “It was Christa who really made this happen. She did all of the legwork leading up to it and finding a location and from there, the rest is history,” Trevor explained. Adding to this, Christa said that the couple “are just ambitious people and it is in their nature to look for a challenge.”

For the first year, the Read’s worked between the two locations until things had established enough within Martensville and then decided that they would lease their Langham business to one of their long term employees and his wife. Trevor and Christa were happy to see another young family getting their start in their industry.

Within their Martensville location, the Reads are happy to provide all service in house and offer a wide range of services for their customers including wheel alignments, lift and lowering kits, tires, maintenance services, tune ups, brakes, suspension, electrical diagnosis and much more.

Believing in community, Read Automotive is proud to support Martensville and surrounding regions by donating to local fundraisers, organizations, teams and more. They are also members of the local Chamber of Commerce. In addition to being a full service facility, Read Automotive has numerous local businesses that perform services in house as an added convenience for their clients, such as glass repair & command starts. ‘anything we can do to help out local businesses and work together is important to us. With a staff of seven, Trevor and Christa believe in keeping consistent faces among their employees and once a trusted addition is found, they hold onto them. “One of our current staff members has been with us since we had the shop in Langham and started completely green. He has since went through the apprenticeship program and has had his Interprovincial Journeyman papers for the past year and a half. We have a really strong team here and they know our clients,” Trevor said.

Seeing the couple within their shop and working with their customers, it is apparent that their decision to build a larger business within Martensville was the right one for them. The passion that the couple has for their work and their community is evident to anyone that walks in the doors to Read Automotive.

“The whole reason we looked at buying a shop was due to the ongoing question of how the clients were being treated and what was being done for them.

Everything we have done has been based around our clients,” Trevor added. This is proven through various means such as courtesy cars, rides for customers, rebate programs that are passed on to them and much more. In turn, the Read’s have seen much support from their clients reciprocated. “We are so grateful for all of the support and we are happy to have such a great clientele. It has been a great experience so far and we look forward to continuing on,” Christa said.

New Event Preparing for Summer Debut in Martensville Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger

A fun new event is making its debut in Martensville this summer. On June 17th, local residents can participate in the first ever Martensville ColouRun, an idea that is closely based on the colour runs that take place in larger centres, such as Saskatoon. “We have such wonderful trails and facilities here in Martensville, so we thought, why not use them! Let’s help to keep our families and their events local. This is a great time to get the family and kiddos out and have an absolute blast together,” founder/organizer Meagan Barabash explained.

The event will consist of a 5km course, where participants can walk, run, come in a stroller and more. It will be an untimed course, with the ultimate goal of completing the event being covered in as much colour as possible. “It is a fun event for the whole family, sports teams, teens and more. We will be announcing costume contest opportunities, and more soon. The more outrageous, the better,” Barabash added.

The course will start at the North Ridge Community Centre and will run through Kinsmen Park and the surrounding area with a BBQ to follow. Volunteers are needed in order to ensure this event is a success and although some are already in place, Barabash says, “the more, the better.” You can contact Barabash at colour.martensville@gmail.com, or by messaging Martensville ColouRun on Facebook. In addition to volunteers, Barabash noted that they would be looking for “Community Partners” for sponsorship, prizes, etc.

Early bird registration will take place until May 1st and prices are as follows: 8 years and up $35 early bird ($45 after May 1st), 7 and under $20 early bird ($25 after May 1st). Participants under 8 years old are welcome to participate for free, but will not receive a race package.

The race package includes a white ColouRun T-shirt, cool neon sunglasses, an individual bag of colour powder, goodies and more!

Tough Gov’t Budget Decisions Must Be Fair

The challenges of the 2018-19 Saskatchewan budget are no less than they were a year ago. Let us all hope that both the government and the public show reasonability that was not always present a year ago.

Admittedly, mistakes in governance are often in the eyes of the beholder. What we see as a mistake in government may be more of a matter of opinion

For example, it was considered by many a mistake to shudder the old Saskatchewan Transportation Company. Certainly, the elderly unable to drive from rural communities to doctors’ appointments in the larger cities and towns considered it a mistake. Farmers relying on STC to get machinery parts relatively quickly may have similar feelings. But at a minimum $10-million a year in government subsidies, it is highly debateable whether ending STC was truly a mistake.

After all, no other province - many of which are larger or written - had the view that they could afford the luxury of government-owned bus company that has lost money for nearly 40 straight years.

Perhaps the bigger problem has been that every other Saskatchewan government for the past four decades recognized that this was a money-losing venture but did not want to endure the political fallout from closing STC.

That it took until major private carriers like Greyhound decided to get out of the business of serving rural communities for the government to do the same thing with STC says a lot.

Yes, it’s quite possible the Saskatchewan Party government was being mildly disingenuous a year ago when it suggested that private entrepreneurs could fill the void.

For the very same reason, private companies have chosen not to serve those communities STC either also abandoned or didn’t ever serve may explain why few private individuals have had much desire to throw their money into providing service where STC lost money. But what cannot be lost is the sincerity expressed in the 201718 budget to right Saskatchewan’s financial ship.

To do so required other drastic actions like a fullpercentage-point increase in the provincial sales tax to six per cent and extending it to things like junk food, restaurant meals and even insurance.

Some of these decisions were unpopular, but seemingly acceptable. The PST on eating out - vehemently opposed by the powerful restaurant lobby in the past - has been grudgingly accepted.

Other measures like the PST on insurance required a change in government and party leadership. It wasn’t until Scott Moe replaced Brad Wall as premier that the provincial government moved on this initiative.

However, other issues like massive reductions to funeral services for the indigent, reductions to city and town grants-in-lieu and cuts to local libraries required changes to the budget before Wall announced he was leaving in August.

So here is where the Sask. Party government stands right now. Under Moe’s leadership, Saskatchewan is still committed to returning to a balanced budget by the 2020-21 (which neatly coincides with the next provincial election year). While this is a laudable goal, it’s still going to require bitter medicine that taxpayers may be no more ready for now than they were a year ago.

But we may need to curb the notion that we shouldn’t expect more tough decisions after last year’s tough decisions. Of course, this in no way gets the Sask.

Party government off the hook.

It bears full responsibility for the decisions it made that contributed to this financial mess - decisions over a decade to proceed with large, debt-increasing capital spending and major salary increases.

Further cuts or tax increases have to be measured wisely - or at least, more wisely than they were last year.

But in the end what’s really needed is reasonability - both on the part of government and on our part, as well.

Muyres and Crocker Capture National Title Janine Hayward, Martensville Messenger

Kirk Muyres of Martensville recently became national mixed champion with partner Laura Crocker as they won the final 8-7 over Colton Lott and Kadriana Sahaidak. He and Crocker opened the tournament at 5-0 and lost their 6th game against Desjardin and Desjardin; a father daughter group out of Quebec. The loss seemed to change their momentum as they stepped it up again and won four more straight to capture the gold and the national title. When asked what was key to their win he commented on the importance of communication. “We promised each other that during the final, we would commit to effective communication regardless and talk about different shots and ice tendencies and respect one another, and it worked!” He commented on how communication and respect are their team’s strengths. He was also very impressed with Crocker’s ability to perform under pressure. “Laura is amazing under pressure. She is a winner, so it is great having her through the last stone.”

This is the first mixed event for Crocker and Muyres as a team and they are playing well going into World’s. Crocker curls out of Edmonton and is engaged to Geoff Walker, the lead from Team Gushue. Gushue, Canada’s national champion, was in the Men’s World Championship final last weekend against Edin of Sweden. Muyres has one national title under his belt when he was Junior National champion in 2011 playing third under skip Braeden Moskowy.

Muyres and Crocker are off to Oestersund, Sweden on April 21 to try and claim Canada’s first world mixed title. They will be facing 39 other teams.

Muyres is excited to get to Sweden as Canada has never won a mixed doubles world championship. “I just love playing mixed doubles,” commented Muyres.

“It is so fast and engaging from start to finish and the games are nice and quick.”

He thinks that mixed doubles will catch on with the younger generation in the next few years. The Olympic gold brought home by Lawes and Morris in Korea brought a lot of spotlight to mixed doubles

Now that the Olympic cycle is over, there have been a lot of changes in the curling world. Kirk Muyres and his brother Dallen, are trying out next season with a new team. Muyres will be skipping the team of brothers, Kevin Marsh, Dan Marsh and his brother Dallen after the Laycock rink disbanded.

They had been together for the past six years and had four provincial titles under their belts. The Marsh brothers came runner up to Muyres and Team Laycock at the 2018 Saskatchewan Provincials. Muyre’s previous skip, Steve Laycock will be playing with skip Jim Cotter who also has a new look. He has added Tyrell Griffith and Rick Sawatsky as well as Laycock. Matt Dunstone, who threw skip stones for Laycock and is also a twotime Canadian Junior Champion is joining Braeden Moskowy, Catlin Schneider and Dustin Kidby and are curling out of Regina next year.

THIS WEEK IN SPORTS

It came down to the wire but the NHL Playoffs are finally here and the match-ups are set. The Nashville Predators finished with the best record in the league (53-18-11, 117 points) and were awarded the Presidents Trophy. They will play the second Wild Card team the Colorado Avalanche in round one. The Preds went 4-0 against Colorado in the regular season and I suspect the playoffs series will be the same way, predicting a sweep for Nashville. The Pacific winning Vegas Golden Knights will enter their first ever playoff series against the first Wild Card team, the Los Angeles Kings.

The regular season series was tied 1-1 and I think this playoff series will be a battle, I’m predicting Vegas in six games. The 2nd vs 3rd place duel in the Pacific is a battle of California as Anaheim takes on San Jose. The Sharks took three of four in the season series and I think they are going to take this series in seven.

The final match-up on the Western conference first round has the Winnipeg Jets playing the Minnesota Wild. Winnipeg won the season series 3-1 and I predict it will be more of the same in the playoffs; Jets in five games.

In the East the first place Tampa Bay Lightning will host the New Jersey Devils in round one. Surprisingly Jersey took the season series 3-0. The playoffs are a different game though, and I’m taking Tampa in six games. The Washington Capitals won the Metro division and will take on Columbus in round one. The Caps won the season series 3-1 and this is going to be a long seven game battle with Washington coming out on top. Pittsburgh and Philadelphia will fight for Pennsylvania in round one. Philly didn’t manage a win against the Pens in the regular season but I think they are going to take Pittsburgh to seven games in which the Penguins will come out on top. The 8th and final game of the first round of the 2018 playoffs is by far the most anticipated.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are set for a long hard fight against the big bad Boston Bruins. Toronto took the season series 3-1 and they are going to need to be on their game but I think they will take the series in seven exciting games. With the Regular season over there are a few awards that can be handed out. Conner McDavid has won his second straight Art Ross trophy with 108 points and Alex Ovechkin has won the 7th Rocket Richard trophy in his career with a 49-goal campaign.
