Project Duke

We sat down with Hannah from Project Duke, an interior design studio that is redefining what it means to craft truly personal spaces. Along with her co-founder and childhood best friend Daisy, they have turned a preschool friendship into a thriving interior design business based on trust, intuition, and a shared love for thoughtful spaces.

What inspired you and Daisy to establish Project Duke, and how did your partnership come about?

Daisy and I have been best friends since we met in preschool at the age of four. Years later, we both studied Interior Design - I studied first, and Daisy followed soon after. I still remember her saying, “Let’s start a business when I finish studying,” and that’s exactly what we did. We shared the same vision, values, and creative drive, so it just naturally happened.

We both wanted the freedom that comes with building something of our own, and we had no fear of anything failing and just went for it.

How do you ensure that each design reflects the unique personality and needs of your clients?

Interior design is an incredibly personal service, and building a genuine connection with each client is not just essential; it’s one of our favourite parts of the process. Every project begins with getting to know the client - their lifestyle, their story, and how they want to feel in their space.

What advice would you give to someone looking to create a cohesive and inviting space in their home or business?

I would begin by focusing on a consistent colour palette or choosing a few colours that you’d like to work with. This anchors the space and ties everything together. From there, choose a few key pieces that reflect your personality and style, and allow them to guide the rest of your design choices.

For a truly inviting atmosphere, think about layering textures and materials - natural elements like wood, stone, or soft textiles can make a space feel warm and welcoming. It’s also important to consider the flow and layout of the space, ensuring that it’s not only beautiful but functional for how you live or work.

Looking ahead, what are your aspirations for the future of Project Duke and its impact on the interior design industry?

Our journey is always evolving, and there’s so much we’d love to explore with Project Duke. Designing or furnishing a boutique hotel is high on our wish list - we’re drawn to the idea of creating a complete, immersive experience through interiors. We’d also love to step into furniture design.

Collaborating on a tile range, developing product ranges, working within property development - the list goes on.

We’re genuinely open to wherever the work takes us, as long as it feels aligned with us. We rarely ever say no to a new opportunity, so I guess you’ll just have to wait and see where we end up - which is the exciting part. ■

We’re constantly inspired by the people we meet. Being invited into someone’s home and hearing about their experiences allows us to design in a way that feels deeply personal and completely tailored. These connections fuel our creativity and ensure that every design is a true reflection of the individual, not just in how the space looks but also in how it feels, functions, and supports their daily life.

What trends in interior design are you currently excited about, and how do they influence your work?

We’re currently loving the return to warmth and softness in interiors: rich, layered textures, tonal palettes, and organic forms that bring a real sense of calm and depth to a space.

There’s a growing appreciation for timeless design done well, where quality and intention matter more than fleeting trends.

These movements resonate with our belief that design should feel effortless and personal. While we stay aware of trends, we use them as inspiration - not direction. Our focus is on creating spaces that feel authentic to the client, and that stand the test of time.

This Burrata, Vodka Sauce, Fenugreek Crumb recipe from Windsor Wine Room’s Head Chef Benjamin Muzza, combines creamy burrata with rich vodka sauce and a spiced fenugreek crumb - perfect for sharing.

Ingredients

Method

200g onions, chopped

1.

400g peeled tomatoes

2. Stir in tomato paste and paprika. Cook for 2 minutes.

50g tomato paste 30g paprika

Melt butter and cook onions until soft.

3. Add tomatoes, grilled peppers, and simmer for 10 minutes.

4. Add vodka and cook for 10-15 minutes.

100g butter 300-500ml vodka 300g grilled peppers, chopped Salt to taste (about 5g) Fenugreek crumb

Fenugreek crumb 1.

Preheat oven to 180°C. Toast bread until crispy, then cool.

2. Blitz toasted bread in a food processor until crumbed.

3. Stir in fenugreek seeds, lemon zest, and thyme.

Luggage should be better. That was the simple idea that sparked July.

Frustrated by overpriced, uninspired suitcases, Richard Li and his co-founder Athan Didaskalou set out to disrupt the industry. Since then, July has redefined travel with sleek, durable, and thoughtfully designed luggage.

We spoke with Richard about July’s journey and redefining the future of travel while staying true to its Melbourne roots.

What inspired you both to enter the luggage industry, and how did your backgrounds influence the initial vision for July?

When starting July, my co-founder Athan and I had already founded a handful of previous businesses between us; we’re entrepreneurs through and through.

At the time, we were both travelling a lot for work and getting frustrated at the dodgy cases we were using and the massive disconnect between price and quality.

You’d see these legacy brands charging $800 or $900 for basically the same aluminium shell that’s been around forever. Meanwhile, the direct-to-consumer revolution was happening in every other category, from skincare to sunglasses, and we just thought - why hasn’t anyone disrupted luggage yet?

July is known for its innovative and personalised luggage designs. Can you share insights into your product development process?

When we first started, we read through thousands of customer reviews of existing luggage brands - proper deep-dive research that revealed countless frustrations travellers were experiencing. That intensive research phase really shaped our entire approach to design.

One of our most valuable assets has been our retail storefront at our headquarters in Melbourne, where our design team is also based. It’s more than just a shop - it’s essentially a live testing ground where we can observe how people interact with our products and gather immediate feedback. This direct customer engagement has helped us identify subtle design improvements that wouldn't be apparent through online sales alone. We’re constantly learning, iterating, and improving our range.

How do collaborations with athletes and events like the Australian Open align with your values and drive growth?

Our partnership with the Australian Open really represents a perfect alignment of values and heritage.

Tennis is part of our city’s DNA - Melbourne is one of only four cities in the world to host a Grand Slam, and that sporting excellence and style is deeply woven into our cultural fabric. The collaboration was a natural fit because tennis, particularly the AO, embodies that unique intersection of high performance and sophisticated style that we strive for in our products.

The partnership has been particularly powerful for us on social media. The content we created for the limitededition tennis range has generated some of our highest engagement rates in the last year; it’s been really successful. For many customers, their first experience with July isn't walking past our store or seeing our ads - it’s discovering us through social content.

How do you balance maintaining July’s Australian identity while expanding into international markets and appealing to a diverse audience?

The Australian thing is interesting because while we’re proud of our Melbourne roots, we’ve always thought of ourselves as a global brand. We focus on universal travel pain points - everyone wants a suitcase that's lightweight, durable, and thoughtfully designed, whether they're in Sydney, Singapore, or San Francisco.

With a rapidly growing global presence, what is your long-term vision for July, and how do you see the brand evolving in the next five to ten years?

Looking ahead, we’re really focused on building July into the world’s most loved travel brand. Not just luggage - we’re thinking about the entire travel journey. We’ve already expanded into travel accessories, but there’s so much more to come. The vision is to be a fashion brand that makes travel fundamentally better through clever design and technology. Five years from now, I see us having a complete ecosystem of travel products, all working seamlessly together. But we’ll never lose that obsession with quality and innovation that got us started - that's just part of our DNA now. ■
