Annual Report of THE GEORGE C. MARSHALL FOUNDATION
Fiscal Year 2023

Fiscal Year 2023
As you will see in the pages below, the George C. Marshall Foundation moved from strength to strength in 2023. The year was highlighted by our first ever Summer Teachers Institute, where we welcomed eleven teachers from across Virginia. These bright, dedicated educators left with tools to teach the more than 1,200 students who will be in their classrooms in the 2023–24 school year. We also made great strides in the digitization of the George C. Marshall Papers, which will provide unlimited access to scholars, teachers, and students across the country and around the world.
For this year of achievement, of fulfilling our mission in new and important ways, all of us at the Marshall Foundation owe a debt of gratitude to those whose support and encouragement provide us with the necessary resources and inspiration. To this group I say “thank you,” and here’s to another year of promoting the legacy of George C. Marshall.

I was very pleasantly surprised to find that so much of the contextual primary source research has been done surrounding Marshall by the archivists who’ve been here for the past 50, 60 years—so the background reading that I would have probably really struggled to do at NARA at the National Archives is also here.”

The 11 alumni of the first Marshall Foundation Teachers Institute reached students in the 2023–2024 school year.
“A wonderful week to recharge and re-energize for the upcoming school year. The program deepened my understanding and appreciation for Marshall, which will be invaluable in my classroom.”
Rodney E. Thompson Middle School, Fredericksburg, Virginia“This was by far the best week of professional development I have ever had…The staff were incredible and knowledgeable, the lessons were captivating, and the travel experiences all had a concrete goal and purpose.”
On December 1, 2023, General J. H. Binford Peay, III, was presented with the 2023 Andrew J. Goodpaster Award. General Peay was recognized for his more than half century of service to the nation, to the Commonwealth of Virginia, and to VMI. Held at the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, Virginia, the gala dinner was sold out, and the attendees kicked off the holiday season in fine style. The revenue of $XXX raised by this event eclipsed all previous Goodpaster Awards, dating back to 2008.

2023 was another remarkable fundraising year, with 602 individuals and organizations providing financial support— including 136 new donors. The total revenue raised was also noteworthy, representing a 12-year high for the Marshall Foundation.
These results were underpinned by a strong annual giving effort and the Andrew J. Goodpaster Award Dinner in December, when we honored Gen. J. H. Binford Peay, III.
The revenue raised in 2023 supports the programs included in this annual report offered by the Marshall Foundation including teacher education, stimulating lectures, and offering the resources of a world-class library.
The Marshall Foundation received grants from nine organizations in support of its ongoing programming, capital, and general support needs. These competitive grants provided much-needed funds for, among other things, the final phase of our window restoration project, and to support the ongoing digitization of our collections.

“Marshall’s example to us is not really one of personal glory. It is one of loyalty and dedication to duty; selfsacrifice; a willingness to subordinate oneself to a greater cause. A commitment to personal integrity, regardless of the cost. A willingness to endure personal hardship without loss of faith. A willingness to sacrifice personal ambition for the greater good. A recognition that adherence to truth and duty is—in itself—sufficient reward.
These are the reasons I believe that we should remember General Marshall. These are the reasons I am happy and honored to support the Marshall Foundation.”
