PROMPT :

Design a winter pavilion for Hyde Park, London with an emphasis on the natural world.

RESPONSE : Serpentine Island Pavilion creates a visual and experiential bridge between places of congregation and affords a unique perspective of a place once unused.

The event spaces throughout the island offer a sense of destination and provide viewpoints into the island and out into Serpentine Lake. An expansive walkway promotes movement, a processional path, a journey into the undiscovered and creates moments of pause within the waterfront, tree canopy, and amphitheater spaces. The island pavilion is a fusion between the man-made and natural beauty of the landscape and offers a deepened interaction and engagement within the park.

MARINE CREEK GARDENS SHAPING THE GROUND INTO TERRACED PLATFORMS.

PROMPT : Transform an under utilized parking lot into a connection between the Fort Worth Stockyards and nearby Marine Creek.

RESPONSE : Navigating the transition from street-level to creek-level, the Marine Creek Gardens facilitate a connection to the land and water that sustains the historic area. The sloping ground is shaped into a series of garden terraces that provide vantage points, performance spaces, a cafe, gallery, and river walk.

SWEETZER AVENUE TERRACES SECTIONAL HORIZONTAL SHIFTS

PROMPT : Create a multi-family dwelling unit in the heart of West Hollywood, California.

RESPONSE : The Sweetzer Avenue Terraces seek to bring the nature of the nearby Hollywood Hills into the site by giving each dwelling unit a private outdoor garden. A common stair winding through the center of the project connects each unit and provides for shared outdoor space.

AMNESTY PIER INTERSECTION OF PARALLEL PLANES AND URBAN GRID

PROMPT : An anonymous philanthropist and human rights activist wants to build a mid/high rise housing project in the lower east side, and provide a brand-new headquarters location for the humanrights group Amnesty International. The two projects will act as a single building. The surrounding urban fabric must also be analyzed and redesigned if appropriate.

RESPONSE : To create a space that is a haven for the general public, deeply rooted in its site, and able to weather future turmoil. The project reaches out of the existing neighborhood and into the East River to provide a public space that is connected to the city yet protected by the water. A series of carved parallel planes march out into the water to form the Amnesty International headquarters, general assembly hall, galleries, and public gardens. The segmented residential tower sits firmly above the headquarters as a series of neighborhood-scaled blocks stacked atop one another.

ARSENALE PAVILION LAYERING MESH TO CONTROL SPATIAL EXPERIENCE

PROMPT : Create a pavilion in Venice that showcases the poetics of construction.

RESPONSE : My pavilion is an exercise in layering at the material, spatial, and functional scales. It is designed to offer visitors the opportunity to see the exhibitions, performances, presentations, and the city of Venice from a new vantage point. My pavilion is also intended to contribute to the public good by prioritizing the design of accessible circulation routes in and around the pavilion. Architectural devices and spatial elements are layered together in my pavilion to provide Venetians and visitors alike an opportunity to experience the city and its culture in a new way.

AMSTERDAM RESEARCH LAB LAYERING URBAN SPACE

PROMPT : Design a research lab as a museum in the center of Amsterdam that also serves to repair a piece of broken urban fabric. Ideally the public will be able to observe ongoing research concerning the colonization of outer space.

RESPONSE : The Planet B research center draws upon the layered functions of the city of Amsterdam by creating relative ground planes throughout the building. The research center fills in an empty corner of Nieuwmarkt while creating new pedestrian access through an outdoor courtyard. The various programs shift in elevation, and move underneath the pedestrian concourse. This gives way to viewing opportunities for the forest and marine biomes.
