Rev. John Brahill, OSB ’67

This evening, we honor Fr. John Brahill, OSB ’67 for his 13 years as Abbot, as well as his leadership, service, and dedication to all entities of Marmion.

Thomas Michael Brahill grew up in Bensenville, the son of +Joseph and +Lucille Brahill, and younger brother of Michael ’64. After graduating in 1967 as a resident student at Marmion, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from St. Louis University. He worked in private industry until entering Marmion Abbey in 1977. On August 6, 1978, he professed his vows as a Benedictine monk and took the name John. Br. John did his theological studies at St. Meinrad School of Theology in Indiana, and Sant’ Anselmo University in Rome. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 5, 1982.

In 1992, Fr. John became the Prior of Marmion’s mission Priory of San José in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. He served in that role for 17 years. Upon his return from Guatemala, he was the Novice and Junior Master of the Abbey, assisted with Abbey Farms, and was the associate director of development for the Abbey and Academy. Prior to his missionary years, Fr. John was the academic dean and an instructor of theology at Marmion Academy.

On June 25, 2010, Fr. John was elected the fifth abbot of Marmion Abbey, succeeding Abbot Vincent Bataille, OSB who served for 18 years. Abbot John’s Abbatial Mass & Blessing was celebrated by Bishop Thomas G. Doran, Bishop of the Diocese of Rockford, on August 11, 2010.

Under his leadership, Marmion Academy achieved a record enrollment of 551 students for the Butterfield campus and completed a $7 million pipes, roofs, and boiler Capital Campaign. He also had a key role in the formation of all new monks who have entered the Abbey in the last 14 years.

Fr. John successfully led the organization through some extraordinary times, including the 2020 pandemic. He did this with class and grace, allowing his faith, compassion, and integrity to lead Marmion through historic challenges.

2018: Anthony Tinerella ’84 and Abbot John Brahill, OSB ’67 with Campus Renewal Campaign Chairs, John Cordogan and John Diederich ’87, in front of Marmion’s original boilers (installed in 1959). New boilers were installed in 2022 as a part of that campaign.

Fr. John is always ready for a round of golf and enjoys leisure time at the abbey by watching the golf channel. As a lifelong Cubs fan, he savored the 2016 season and has persevered through the periods on either side of that.
