Throughout our 87 years of existence, Marmion Academy has persevered through many world changing and tragic events including the Great Depression, World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, the many conflicts in the Middle East and 9/11. Now we find ourselves in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic and we will persevere once more. On Friday, March 13, I spoke to the students over the PA about the school being closed for a few weeks while the health professionals got this new virus under control. I asked them to take their books and materials for the two weeks we were planning to be closed and we would see them back soon. As the cases grew in Illinois in the spring, our return to school never happened for the 2019-2020 academic year. We quickly switched over to our Remote Learning Program, an initiative started several years ago to be used for weather and emergency school closings. Little did we know in March, it would be the means by which we educated our students through the remainder of the academic year. The dedicated and talented administrators, faculty, and staff worked tirelessly to continue to provide our students with the best education possible given the circumstances. The outstanding young men of the Marmion Community, while sadly missing out on so many key events of the spring, did their best and together we made it through the spring. As we welcome our students back to the Academy this year, albeit beginning the 2020-2021 academic year in a Hybrid Model of instruction, we are doing just as the Marmion Community has done over the past 87 years when experiencing crisis and tragedy – we have adapted and continued to serve the students and families God has brought to the Academy. We have built upon our strengths and found new and innovative ways of tending to the spiritual and faith development of our young men, continuing to provide a quality college preparatory education, and offering ways for our students to continue to grow as leaders. Our hard work, collective prayers, inspiration provided by the Holy Spirit, and the guidance of our Lord have allowed Marmion to continue our mission of providing a Catholic Benedictine college preparatory education for young men entrusted to us – regardless of the circumstances. This year will be one like we’ve never experienced as a school. There will be highs and lows, and even with all of the planning we have done, there will be situations and obstacles that will present themselves. But with your continued prayers and support and our trust in God, the legacy of Marmion will move forward and we will get to the other side of this tragic pandemic. I want to thank all of you for your continued support and generosity. The Academy has been able to raise additional funding for our Guardian Angel Financial Assistance Fund over the summer to support our families who have been financially impacted by the coronavirus and allowed them to keep their son(s) at the Academy. We are so very grateful for the support and prayers of all of our parents, trustees, friends, and benefactors. We are very excited to welcome 138 incoming freshmen, several transfer students, and new members of our faculty and staff (see page 12 for details). Be assured of our continued prayers for you. Our hearts go out to families who have suffered or lost loved ones due to the coronavirus. We also pray for peace and a return to a time when all members of society recognize one another and treat one another as they would treat Jesus Christ. Finally, we ask that you please keep in your prayers the Monks of Marmion Abbey. Their selfless service and example of how to live as Christ gives us inspiration to continue the legacy and tradition of serving Marmion families through these unprecedented times. Fr. Joel recounts the history of Mount Angel Abbey There are not long lines of authors in the area of American Benedictine history. Fr. Joel Ripppinger, OSB realizes that fact after working in that field for half a century. In 2017, when the abbot of Mount Angel Abbey in Oregon first asked Fr. Joel to consider the challenge of writing the history of this Swiss-American monastery, he knew there were not a lot of other contenders for the role. He also knew that this eminent Benedictine community had a long and interesting history that deserved to be written. Abbot John Brahill, OSB ’67 generously assented to the request by Abbot Jeremy Driscoll, OSB of Mount Angel Abbey and the enterprise was in place, with a timeline of three years to finish. Given the duties at the Abbey and Academy that demanded Fr. Joel’s attention, he knew that summer months would be the best time for doing the necessary research. Mount Angel graciously offered travel and accommodations at the Abbey during several weeks in the summers of 2017 and 2018. Fr. Joel had the advantage Fr. Joel’s book, Struggle and Ascent: The History of Mount Angel Abbey, of having researched and written about many of the was published in May 2020. leading figures in Mount Angel’s history in a previous work. Through the cooperation of Mount Angel’s archivists and by access to correspondence and photos that were new, he was able to expand significantly his understanding of the story of Mount Angel. In this time Fr. Joel was also able to sign a contract with Liturgical Press, a prominent Catholic publishing house, to produce and market the book. Additional help came from Abbot John and Anthony Tinerella ’84, Head of School and Principal, who allowed Fr. Joel to have a semester sabbatical from teaching in the Academy in the fall of 2019, when he was able to complete the work of writing and editing the book. The Liturgical Press published the book in early May of 2020, with the title Struggle and Ascent: The History of Mount Angel Abbey. As Abbot Benedict Neenan, OSB of Conception Abbey, MO, a fellow historian of American Benedictine history, said upon previewing the book, “What is especially attractive is the way Fr. Joel weaves biographical sketches of interesting community members and in-depth treatment of various works of the Abbey into the overall historical narrative.” Not unlike most family stories, the history recounts a saga of heroism and holiness, along with human failure and miscalculation. In that sense, it provides lessons that any person of faith can learn from for the present day. Orders for the book can be found at sales@litpress.org as well as on Amazon.

Graduates Earn $21.4 Million in Scholarships This year’s Graduation festivities looked a little different for the Class of 2020. On Sunday, May 24 (the date originally scheduled for Graduation), Marmion held a drive-through celebration to honor the Class of 2020. Masked members of the faculty and staff lined up (socially distant) along Academy Drive with balloons and posters, and cheered as students from the Class of 2020 drove through campus. On Friday, July 31 a “drive-in” style Graduation was held for the Class of 2020. An outdoor stage was erected near the Regole Field House parking lot and the ceremony was broadcast on a FM transmitter for the graduates and their immediate family to listen to in their cars. The ceremony was also live-streamed on YouTube for family and friends to watch at home. Valedictory addresses were given by co-valedictorians Dominic Diederich, Benjamin Riner, and Alexander Yakisan. Abbot John Brahill, OSB ’67 and Anthony Tinerella ’84 also addressed the graduates. Joe Large ’97, Assistant Principal of Academics, announced that 78% of the graduates were awarded scholarships and grants totaling $21.4 million. After a closing prayer by Fr. Michael Burrows, OSB ’70, each graduate had the opportunity to walk across the stage to receive his diploma and have his photo taken. The Class of 2020 received acceptance letters from 163 colleges/universities and will attend 57 different institutions in 28 States this fall. Nicholas Martinez enlisted in the U.S. Army and Jacob Tinajero enlisted in the U.S. Navy.

The Summa Cum Laude Award, an award for academic excellence and achievement, honors students who have earned a perfect 4.00 Cumulative Unweighted GPA, indicating straight A’s through their four years at Marmion. In the Class of 2020, four students attained the distinction: Jason Baker, Dominic Diederich, Benjamin Riner, and Alexander Yakisan. The Head of School Leadership Award honors seniors who demonstrated uncommon leadership talent throughout their four years at Marmion and achieved a cumulative leadership rank among the top 10% of their class. Those awarded were Jason Baker, Thomas Brown, Dominic Diederich, Maxwell Gorlich, Wyatt Holtan, Carlos Liz, Aden Morvice, Benjamin Riner, Charles Rogers, Christopher Sowers, James Tews, Alexander Yakisan, and Anthony Zangler. Each year Marmion recognizes two seniors who were especially generous, positive, and supportive of Marmion over their four years, as voted on by a faculty and staff advisory committee. Students receive Academic Accolades National Merit Scholars

Benjamin Riner ’20, son of Daniel and Teresa Riner of Geneva; Charles Rogers ’20, son of Eric and Deanne Rogers of Montgomery; and Alexander Yakisan ’20, son of Hasan and Elise Yakisan of North Aurora; have all been named 2020 National Merit Scholars by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Merit Scholar designees were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding Finalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. Riner and Yakisan were each awarded a National Merit $2500 Scholarship, underwritten by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) with its own funds. Rogers was awarded the National Merit Loyola University of Chicago Scholarship, sponsored by Loyola University of Chicago. National Merit Scholarship winners are the Finalists in each State judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each State is proportional to the State’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors. These Scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, who appraised a substantial amount of information submitted by both the Finalists and their high schools: the academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from two standardized tests; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by the Finalist; and a recommendation written by a high school official.

Congratulations to the World Language students in the 2020 National Examination Contests in French, Latin and Spanish who attained regional and national recognition for their excellent performance. Unfortunately Italian students were unable to take the 2020 National Exam due to COVID-19 and Latin names were unavailable at the time of printing. ACES Team Excels in State Competition
Despite COVID-19, the ACES Team (Academic Challenge in Engineering and Science), formerly known as the WYSE Team, was able to compete remotely in the State competition the last week of May. Each member of the team had 40 minutes to complete a test once signed in. Team members were each allowed to take two tests within that one-week period. The team as a whole placed fouth in the State (out of the 24 schools in Division 700). All team members placed in the top ten in their subjects with medals awarded to those in the top five. Rensselaer Medal
Nicholas Coffman ’21 has been awarded the Rensselaer Medal. The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in conjunction with high schools around the world, awards the Rensselaer Medal and scholarship to promising high school juniors who have distinguished themselves in mathematics and science. This award has been presented since 1916 with two purposes: to recognize the superlative academic achievement of students and to motivate students towards a career in science, engineering and technology. This $30,000 per year scholarship is guranteed for four years for each Medalist who applies, is accepted and chooses to enroll at Renssselaer Polytechnic Institute in upstate New York.
National Honor Society
The purpose of the National Honor Society is fourfold: to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render services, to promote leadership, and to develop character. NHS recognizes the academic accomplishments of high school students; however, it is more than just an honor roll. The Honor Society chapter establishes rules for membership that are based upon a student’s outstanding performance in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. The Band Plays On!
by René Rosas, Band Director Despite the 2020 national lockdown, the Marmion Rosary Band continues to function. The lockdown was announced on Friday, March 13, the day before students from the Band and Choir 2 were scheduled to attend the WSMA Solo & Ensemble Festival in Wisconsin. However, WSMA rose to the occasion and provided an opportunity for students to participate in a virtual solo performance later in the spring. It was not enough time for everyone in the band to get signed up, but we did have a few students who were able to take advantage of this opportunity. The following students attended the virtual district solo festival and received 1st division ratings: Andrew Auchstetter ’20 (clarinet), Maggie Baranick ’21 (trumpet), Robbie Dzierzanowski ’20 (baritone saxophone), Drake Ghaderi ’23 (snare drum), Samuel Hoying ’21 (oboe), Ethan Krol ’23 (alto saxophone), Benjamin Ramm ’23 (snare drum), Elizabeth Sperlakis ’20 (flute), and Ryan Sperlakis ‘22 (trumpet). Students who performed a Class A solo and received a 1st division rating went on to State level competition where they all received a 1st division State rating! Our Spring Concert was also done virtually. Mr. Birch introduced each Choir senior (6) and Mr. Rosas introduced each Band senior (17). Seniors had the opportunity to say a few words to their fellow band and choir members and reflect on their favorite memory. We wish our seniors in the Class of 2020 well as they are off to college and look forward to visiting with them when they return on breaks. Thirteen of our 17 Band seniors have plans to continue playing in college.
My Fair Lady Meets One Last Time
by Brian Birch, Choral Director and Drama Club Moderator Over the summer, cast, crew, and pit members met in small, socially distant, mask-wearing groups. The production unfortunately had to be cancelled and no virtual alternative has been made available. The pandemic closures began exactly two weeks prior to what would have been opening night.At the time we thought we would be able to postpone the show. We engaged in a virtual tea party to commemorate what would have been our opening night. We sang songs from the show, played games, and took the opportunity to just hang out a bit. As time went on, we learned that

virtual interactions are not the same and that trying to create a virtual performance would be laborious, daunting and would never live up to the show that the students wanted to remember. The cast got together to tell the story of Henry Higgins and Eliza Doolittle in a different way. They reminisced over the experiences they had had, shared their love for one another, performed excerpts from the show, and discussed what life for a high school student had been like during the course of the pandemic. This event hopefully brought closure to all the students involved and gave them the recognition they earned for their months of rehearsals and preparations for what would have been a beautiful show, a culmination of time, talent, dedication, and love for live theatre.
Ceramics Class Update
by Jeanne McLean, Ceramics and Engineering Instructor When we exited the building in March, the Marmion Ceramics classes left quite a bit of art work drying on the shelves and waiting for the kiln. During the evening over the next few weeks, I loaded the kiln several times in the dark and emptied building, completing the firing cycles of these beautiful pieces made by my students. The daytime Zoom classes consisted of connecting and grieving the loss of the hands-on artistic process so enjoyed by all of us. After the kiln-firings, I spent a couple of days driving around to deliver finished artwork to my students at home, leaving pots and trays on front porches with a doorbell ring. I met moms and dads, grandpas and grandmas, and felt truly blessed to see how my students’ artwork was connecting me with our extended Marmion family. Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry, is a national award for Christian teens presented by dioceses throughout the United States. It is the highest recognition from the NFCYM for a high school teen who demonstrates the following qualities: Lives as a disciple of Christ, setting a positive example for other youth; Witnesses to their faith by exhibiting Catholic morals and integrity; Demonstrates Gospel values through service to others; Exhibits Christian leadership in their school and community settings. The 2019-2020 awardees are: Cristian Cardenas, Tommy Conroy, Connor Jenig, Aden Morvice, Elias Tamer, and James Tews. The Faith in Action Service Award is presented to seniors who have exhibited spiritual growth, relational ministry, creative service and a continued openness to putting their faith into action by helping others. The 2019-2020 awardees are: Robbie Dzierzanowski, Nick Martinez, Benjamin Riner, Danny Seraphin, Chase Temple, and Matthew Woodford. The Outreach Ministry Award is awarded to seniors who have shown exceptional commitment, the ability to lead large and small groups, the willingness to share their faith with both students and parents, and commitment to the values of Jesus Christ and the Church. The 20192020 awardees are: Jason Baker, Jack Burke, Dominic Diederich, Patrick Donahoe, Henry King, and Ernie Rowoldt.

What’s in store for Cadet Sports? by Paul Chabura, Athletic Director
Monday, August 10th was to kick off another exciting Fall season of Cadet athletics. While that was still the case, it looks a bit different this year. The Illinois High School Association (IHSA), in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the Governor’s office, made an announcement on Wednesday, July 29 regarding how seasons would be adjusted due to the pandemic. The chart below indicates which season each sport will compete in during the 2020-2021 year. The 2020-2021 season will look and feel different; however, our boys will continue to work and make the most of the opportunities given. Throughout the summer our Cadets did a great job understanding and executing their roles within the set guidelines for participation by the IHSA, IDPH and our Governor’s office. Witnessing their compliance, enthusiasm and dedication warmed my heart. Our student-athletes did a great job showing how much competing for their sport and school means to them. Their effort and resourcefulness will pay dividends throughout their season. While this year may not be ideal, it will certainly be one that will be memorable and will provide a great learning tool for our young men. They will have learned to adapt and survive. To make the most of their opportunities. To focus on the positives and not the negatives. To be resilient and patient. Ultimately, sports are tools we use to help develop character and this season may be a great catalyst for such development.

New Faces Around Campus by Kathleen Hausmann, Executive Director of Advancement The 2020-2021 school year began with several new faces. We are excited to welcome the following new faculty and staff members to the Marmion Family! Mr. Bryce Biel has been Marmion’s Strength & Conditioning Coach for the last five years. This year he joins our Physical Education Department as the Varsity Strength & Conditioning Instructor. Br. Theodore Haggerty, OSB, will be teaching Theology 3. He is a professed monk of Marmion Abbey since 2013 and a recent graduate of Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology. He has worked in various capacities for the past few years at Abbey Farms and the Marmion campus. Br. Theodore’s interests include literature, film, Latin and ancient cultures.
double major from Illinois State and has worked as a Regional and Municipal Account Manager for Waste Management and as a Cemetery Manager for the Rockford Diocese. Mrs. Malatt and her husband have five children: sons Brodie ’15, Steven ’17, and Daniel ’20; and daughters Eliana (RHS ’22) and Theresa (RHS ’28). Mr. Octavian Stinga will be returning to Marmion as an Italian and Spanish Instructor. Mr. Stinga holds a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and a master’s degree in Hispanic Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Prior to coming to Marmion, he taught at Dominican University, College of DuPage, Columbia College and Kendall College, and worked as an interpreter for the Cook County Circuit Court. Mr. Stinga is in the process of publishing a Spanish novel and Italian short stories.
Mr. Brandon Hillary will be teaching English 1 and English 3. He will also be joining the football and basketball coaching staffs, as well as helping out with the yearbook program. Mr. Hillary is a proud graduate of Illinois State University and is entering his 10th season as a boys’ basketball coach. He is also an avid writer and a huge fan of Chicago sports!
Mrs. Nicolette Welte is entering into her seventeenth year of working in Catholic education, and will be joining us as a Social Science Instructor. She has taught a variety of social science classes at the high school level and reading/ELA at the middle school level, as well as working as an administrator. She was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago and lives there with her husband and her dog, Allie.

Departing Faculty & Staff by Kathleen Hausmann, Executive Director of Advancement This spring, amidst the beginning of the pandemic, we said goodbye to several beloved members of our school community who are moving on to the next chapter in their lives. Collectively, these folks served 135 years leading, teaching, coaching and guiding generations of young Marmion men. We were blessed to have each of them as part of our school community, and they will always be part of the Marmion family. Please join in celebrating the dedication and lasting legacy of the following individuals: Mr. Vince Bellafiore, was with Marmion for 21 years (1999-2020) as Director of the Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) Program, an instructor in the LEAD Program, and as Director of Operations for the Academy Garage from 2014 to 2019. Mr. Joe Chivari ’71, was with Marmion for 37 years (1983-2020) as a coach, physical education instructor, and social sciences instructor (serving as the Department Chair from 1987-2002, and again from 2013 to 2020). He was also the Athletic Director

from 2000-2015. He is the father of Ethan ’13. Ms. Kym Farmer joined Marmion in 2019 as an Italian Instructor. While she was only at Marmion for a year, her classroom contributions were much appreciated. Mrs. Carrie Gissel, worked for Marmion for 22 years (1998-2020) as the Hammes Bookstore Manager, Assistant Manager of the Uniform Store, and the Assistant to the Director of Student Affairs Office/ Attendance Officer. She is the wife of SGM John Gissel ’69 who retired in 2019 and mother of Jeremy ’01. Mrs. Deb Glemkowski worked in the Advancement Office for six years (20142020) as the Administrative Assistant. She was an invaluable member of the Advancement Team. Deb is mother of Joe ’12 and Tom ’17. Dan Heckle was with us for five years (2014-2019) as our Director of Community
Outreach and Engagement. Dan was instramental in launching Marmion’s successful Hockey Program and served as the assistant coach from 2016-2019. He also was an assistant Golf Coach (2017-2019) and an assistant Bass Fishing Coach (20182019). Dr. Richard Holinger was with Marmion for 41 years (1979-2020) as an English instructor teaching English I Honors, English III, and English III Honors. In addition to teaching, he is a published author. His poetry, short fiction, creative nonfiction, criticism and book reviews have appeared in over a hundred literary journals; he published two short fiction chapbooks; and has a column for Shaw Media newspaper. Mrs. Mary Strand, taught for 14 years (2006-2020) as a Latin instructor. She also served as the moderator for the National Latin Honor Society and the Latin Club from 2006 to 2020.

While we were not able to host Salute to Youth in 2020, we are looking forward to a grand celebration at Salute to Youth 2021! The 2021 event will take place on Saturday, April 24 at Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace. The entire Marmion community is invited to share in an evening of elegance and friendship and be part of Marmion’s most admired tradition. Salute to Youth is sponsored by Marmion’s Board of Trustees and assisted by the Parents’ Club. It is an evening when proud parents, families, faculty and friends come together to recognize our shared mission and celebrate the accomplishments of the senior class. As part of the 2021 event, the Cadet Class of 2020 will be invited as our honored guests to join in the celebration. We look forward to having them in the audience and having the opportunity to recognize them as a group. Your ticket to Salute to Youth is all-inclusive! The evening begins with a reception from 6:00-7:30 PM which includes bountiful hors d’oeuvres and premium open bar, followed by a 4-course gourmet meal in the Grand Ballroom with wine. Following dinner is the Presentation of the Guard & Court of Honor, Parents’ Dance, continued premium open bar and dancing to live music. We’re shaking things up a bit this year and are excited to announce we will have two Chair Couples spearheading our efforts - Alex & Dr. Stephen Juriga and Brian & Christina Greviskes ’04. These wonderful couples were slated to be the 2020 Salute Chair Couple and Vice Chair Couple, and have generously agreed to share in the Chair Couple responsibilities and leadership of the 2021 event.

News from the Alumni Association by Bill Fox ’74, Director of Alumni Relations Alumni Board Update The 2020-2021 term of the Marmion Alumni Association Board of Directors will open with a general meeting on Monday, September 14, 2020. We thank our outgoing Chairman Austin Dempsey ’97 for his leadership during these past two years as we welcome Ron Rudow ’99 (pictured left) as our Chairman for the next two school years. Ron with his wife Nicole and three daughters live in Oswego and are members of Holy Angels parish. It’s noteworthy that we bid farewell to three former Board Chairmen who have each served our Board for more than two decades. Resigning from the Alumni Board at the conclusion of last year’s term are Rich Theis ’62, L. Wayne Hoover ’87 and Pat Kackert ’87. Each of these men were exceptional leaders who had a hand in making our Board the active, contributing organization it is today. We would not enjoy the success we do today in support of Marmion Academy and Abbey without their years of dedication, leadership and commitment. All of us at Marmion wish these past Board Chairmen all the best in the future.
Alumni Events Update REUNION WEEKEND 2020: To state the obvious, these are interesting times. With the onset of the pandemic our Alumni Association was forced to cancel our June Reunion Weekend and annual Steak Fry/Lobster Boil (SFLB). It was a difficult and unprecedented decision but we’re all familiar with many of those this year. The good news is that our BIG TICKET Raffle was extremely successful. We sold our 999 tickets a few days before our June 5 Facebook Live drawing. We raffled TICKET #1000 online and raised $3,500! We announced the winner of TICKET #1000 and placed their

stub into the drum just before our drawing began. A list of all this year’s BIG TICKET winners can be found at marmion.org/bigticket. Our Association will struggle this year to maintain our revenue which is primarily utilized for the Academy’s financial aid fund. Things could have been much tougher for us without your tremendous support of our BIG TICKET Raffle. Thank you! Mark your calendars now for Reunion Weekend 2021 on June 4 and 5, 2021. We aim and hope it will be the biggest and best Steak Fry/Lobster Boil and Reunion Weekend in our history!
