“To believe in God and strive for Him.” This is one of the first things you see on the side of the building when you enter Marmion Academy through the Battaglia Center. It is a translation of the statement inscribed in Latin that has been on the Marmion Crest for eight decades. This simple, yet extremely powerful statement speaks to the heart of who we are as a community. We are a community that strives to help all its members get closer to God through hard work and prayer, a characteristic of all Benedictine Communities. Marmion Academy’s mission is to help young men further develop spiritually, academically, and as Christian leaders during their time with us. These are the three pillars of a Marmion education that allow a student to enter Marmion as a boy and graduate as a ‘Man of Marmion’. The journey of a student over his four years at Marmion; experiencing not only what is reflected in our three pillars but also what is found ‘between the Marmion pillars’, is what helps him become a man of faith and integrity. Supporting our mission through our ministry opportunities, academic programming and support, athletics and activities, as well as the experiences gained and lessons learned navigating the highs and lows of being a teenager, are all part of the Marmion experience. The high school journey is not always easy, but by always striving to get closer to God and working to be the best version of themselves, the collective growth and experience gained will be great and reflective of that simple statement – “To believe in God and strive for Him.” It is a fact that Marmion has never lost sight of its mission and continues a history of hard work and dedication by the faculty, staff, and administrators. Even through the toughest of times, our students continue to leave Marmion Academy closer to God and ready for what the next chapters of their lives will bring. One of the incredible aspects of the Marmion Community that must be mentioned is that it is not just the students who attend Marmion who are impacted by the outstanding Catholic Benedictine education provided. From faculty and staff, parents, grandparents, alumni, friends, and benefactors, “to believe in God and strive for Him” is a call to action that brings us all closer to Christ and closer to one another as members of the Marmion Family. We are all impacted, in our own way, by the collective work to bring our students closer to God and provide them with the best educational experience possible. It is one of the many characteristics of this great place that can be referenced as part of the ‘Marmion Difference.’ It has been a great year! We have shaken off the cobwebs of the past two years and have been able to provide our students with the full Marmion experience. We thank God for His blessings and continue to do His work inspired and guided by the Monks of Marmion Abbey. As we move through this Lenten Season, we are blessed by the promise of everlasting life by our Lord, Jesus Christ through His passion, death, and Resurrection. It is our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who is our Light in the darkness, and He has been there with us through it all. We also pray for peace in the world and those impacted by war and suffering. We could not continue to provide young men with a Catholic Benedictine education without all of you. Regardless of how you are affiliated with Marmion, past or present, God has brought you into our Marmion Family for many reasons, one of which is to help us continue to add to the legacy of those before us. It is through our hard work and prayer that we will be able to provide the best for those currently with us, as well as keep Marmion strong for the next generation of students to come! Someone You Should Know:

Fr. Paul Weberg, OSB (aka LTC Paul Weberg, USA) by Fr. Charles Reichenbacher, OSB ’59

This is a condensation of a Press Release, issued on January 28, 2022, by Cheryl Phillps, publicist for the 88th Readiness Division of the U.S. Army, Fort McCoy, WI. The original title was “Fastforwarding event nudges priest to chaplaincy.” Fr. Paul is currently the prior of Marmion Abbey, a theology instructor at Marmion Academy, and an assistant Cross Country coach at the Academy. His friends and family members use words such as joyous, humorous, goofy, warm, spiritual and approachable to describe him. Add planner, organizer, administrator and dependable to that list. Those are the adjectives that Lt. Col. Paul Weberg hopes those who know him best use to define him. Fr. Paul is the new 88th Readiness Division command chaplain at Ft. McCoy, WI. Fr. Paul brings a life experience that includes being a priest, a Benedictine monk of Marmion Abbey, part of a beer brewing enterprise (at Abbey Farms), a college-prep high school teacher at Marmion Academy, and a cross-country running coach. He has served in all three components of the Army (Regular, Reserves, and National Guard), has deployed six times, and has served in a variety of military jobs over his nearly 15-year Army career. He holds a B.A. in philosophy, a Master of Divinity, a Licentiate in Sacred Theology, and a Doctor of Ministry degree, with a concentration in military chaplaincy.

about where he’d be 50 years in the future. What he saw in fast forwarding his life “terrified me. I had more to give. I knew I had more to do. I felt God calling me to do more,” he said. “That was a turning point in my life.” He went on to say that once the Global War on Terror started, he saw “TV segments on Soldiers who had six, nine, 12 months in combat and had never seen a priest. I felt a desire to meet that need.” His religious superior encouraged him to investigate options, and in 2007 he accessioned into the Chaplain Corps, joined the Illinois Army National Guard. Maybe not surprisingly, his passion is “sharing the love and joy of the Lord. Following the Lord should bring us joy in our lives, along with a sense of fulfillment. That’s a deep passion. I have a desire to share that,” he said. And about those family members and their description of Fr. Paul Weberg. They are “very supportive and very, very proud” of his service as an Army Chaplain. His mom, Rita, and two sisters live in the Aurora area, and his brother lives in Indiana. His dad, Tom, died a few years ago.

Fr. Paul is ready for the challenge of being the 88th RD command chaplain. “Our job is to facilitate not only religious services, but the holistic health and fitness program,” he said. He noted the benefit of the spiritual facets of the Soldier, “which are external sources of support and strength. Bad things happen to people when they don’t have those reservoirs. I want to offer opportunities to grow in the spiritual dimension.” Fr. Paul says that he became a priest because “I enjoyed church activities, serving at Mass and singing in the choir. I found joy in that. I wanted to share what is a source of joy for me to others,” he said. The Geneva/Aurora native recalls an event that nudged him in the direction of becoming a military chaplain. He was (a Benedictine priest) teaching at Marmion Academy, and was showing a movie to the class. Sitting there, he thought Photos: Fr. Changes at Abbey Farms

by Bill Fox ’74, Director of Alumni and Constituent Relations Since 2009, Adam Voirin ’02 has been the Director of our Abbey Farms operation. Adam has been instrumental in the success of the farm as it has expanded while maintaining the Marmion elements which have been a staple of the Abbey for almost 50 years. Adam’s entrepreneurial spirit has been a driving force behind initiatives such as the Carol and Ken Nagel Emporium, Pumpkin Daze, Abbey Ale, “Monkin’ Donuts,” as well as many other revenue producing elements. Our annual Christmas Tree sales have continued to grow under Adam’s oversight. Adam has also been involved with the local community in promoting the Marmion Mission. We wish him tremendous success as he takes on a new endeavor opening his own landscape design business. We’re pleased to announce that Mr. Connor Rowan has been named Abbey Farms Director of Operations as of March 2. Connor Rowan and Adam Voirin ’02 Connor joined Abbey Farms in July of 2021. His experience in both marketing and the food and beverage industry makes him exceptionally well qualified and capable to take on this role. Eric Mott ’03, who joined the operation in 2011, will continue to plant and manage the trees and gardens of Abbey Farms, projects he has worked on with Adam for the past eleven years. San José Spanish School Reopens by Abbot John Brahill, OSB ’67

We are happy to announce that the San José Spanish School, located on the grounds of our Priory in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, has reopened. The San José Spanish School is a fully accredited school for teaching the Spanish language. It is administered by the Benedictine monks of Priorato San José. The school is especially oriented toward providing an education in the Spanish language for both men and women who work or will work in Hispanic ministry. It is open to major seminarians, priests, ministers, religious, lay ministers and other adults interested in Hispanic ministry. Students must be 21 years of age or older. Qualified instructors provide an intensive immersion in the Spanish language for students at all levels of proficiency with an emphasis on preparation for working in the Hispanic ministry within the Catholic Church or other Christian churches. In addition to an intensive program and immersion in the Spanish language, students have optional cultural, social, educational, travel and pastoral opportunities according to interest. The income provided by the San José Spanish School provides ongoing assistance in funding the Benedictine monks of the San José Priory Mission. Class of 2026 Scholarship Recipients Fifteen eighth-graders have been awarded academic scholarships to attend Marmion Academy this fall. Scholarships were awarded based on academic merit on the entrance exam held on December 4, 2021. These 15 scholarships have a value of $345,600 over four years. The four Alumni Association Scholarships awarded are restricted to sons, grandsons, nephews or brothers of Marmion alumni. The following have received academic scholarships as members of Marmion’s class of 2026: William Acevedo, son of Antonio and Martha Acevedo of Aurora, was awarded the Jan and Tom Montiegel Memorial Scholarship. Academic Accolades National Merit Finalists

Seniors Tyler Suess of Batavia and Jackson Wittenberg of Sugar Grove have been named Finalists in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Suess and Wittenberg are among the top 15,000 high school students nationwide who were awarded the distinction of Finalist by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Over 1.5 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools entered the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. According to the NMSC, by the conclusion of the 2022 competition about 7,500 Finalists will be selected as National Merit Scholarship recipients.

To date, the Math Team has competed in three contests: Lemont Invitational Contest (remote), MTA Chicago Archdiocese Math Contest (in-person), and the ICTM Regional Contest (remote). The final competiton, ICTM State Contest, is on April 30 and the team will compete remotely from Marmion’s Koch Theatre. Dr. Victor Pinks, II ’72 named 2022 Simulia Champion by Maria Asher, Associate Director of Advancement Events

Dr. Victor Pinks, II ’72, IT Director, Science Chair and Founder/Director of the CPARC Engineering Center at Marmion, was recently named 2022 Simulia Champion. Simulia Champions are active users of the 3DEXPERIENCE platform and the SIMULIA portfolio. They specialize in structures, electromagnetics, multibody dynamics, and fluid dynamics. He is one of only 83 champions globally and is recognized for his passion and innovation in his field, specifically his work in the CPARC Engineering Center at Marmion. Dr. Pinks, a 1972 alumnus of Marmion, has a Doctorate in Chemical Physics which he obtained by writing Molecular Dynamic (MD) solvers for simulations. Upon graduation Dr. Pinks decided he would focus on commercializing his MD solver, and try to “build a future” that way. This path exposed him to the business world where he learned a great deal about raising funds, venture capitalist, intellectual property, and much more. Dr. Pinks came to Marmion in 2000 to teach chemistry and was excited about the flexibility given to him to incorporate technology with science. This also allowed him to continue moving his MD solvers forward. After the death of his first wife in 2007 he did a “deep dive” into artificial intelligence and connecting molecular solvers with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). That is where the idea for the CPARC Engineering program came to him. The CPARC Engineering program was created with the mission to provide an experiential learning environment for Computer Assisted Engineering (CAE) that benefits both businesses and high school students. Marmion’s CPARC Engineering program will only accept projects that businesses are working on and that students can learn what is necessary to contribute to the solution. In creating CPARC, Dr. Pinks understood that this created a new learning context in which to teach science. It is a new type of experiential learning, but he believed high school students could maneuver through the computer world “if adults would stop telling them what they could and couldn’t learn – adults needed simply to get out of the way.” Since the inception of the CPARC Engineering program, Marmion students have worked on various projects, most notably a hypersonic aerospace design optimization for Velontra, a deep-sea ROV umbilical cable, and a large federal project (that we cannot divulge). Also, it has a been the experience of the students that they cannot get enough processing speed, so Dr. Pinks and his Marmion students are working with XSEDE (a software program) to test XFlow (software program, pictured right) on high-performance computing assets using a 1000 GPU supercomputer. Because of this Marmion students will be rewriting the Xflow tutorials! In its ninth year, Marmion students have assisted major companies throughout the country in improving and solving engineering problems for their clients. Often the student are offered internships and even positions within the companies that they worked with in high school. Harrison Kearby ’16 who was part of the CPARC Engineering program wrote upon reading about Dr. Pinks Champion designation: “As an alum of the program, I’m excited and grateful for Dassault Systems continuous support. I’m still utilizing both the technical and professional skills I learned in CPARC on a daily basis. Outreach Ministry Retreats by Olivia Lyons, Director of Outreach Ministry

A Saturday afternoon: twelve Marmion Academy juniors and seniors and ninety eighth graders, gather in one large room in the basement of a church. They came together to better understand the Gospel message. Through large group games, witnesses, small groups, large group sharing, Eucharistic adoration, and Mass, their understanding of the Gospel became clearer. What an honor it is to work alongside these Marmion students that volunteer their weekday, weeknights, and weekend time to serve the middle schoolers in our surrounding communities. They serve so that they can proclaim the words of Jesus Christ and put those words into action. It is through their service that 6th-8th graders from Catholic Schools and Religious Education Programs in Aurora, Batavia, Warrenville, Naperville, Plano, Somonauk, St. Charles, Yorkville, and more get to experience Marmion’s faith-rooted “brotherhood” in action. Through the leadership of the Outreach Ministry Senior Student Core Team, leaders like Charlie Konen ’22 (Student Director), Nathan Sowers ’22, and Angel Camarillo ’22, middle school students are able to witness high school students who are successful in many facets of their lives. They are never too busy or “cool” to answer this unique call to serve the Lord. The Blessed Columba Marmion Award honors and highlights our Benedictine tradition and recognizes the good works, high character, and many accomplishments of our students. Henry Mikrut ’25: Awarded for Discipline Henry has learned in a very short time what it means to be a disciplined student. He has become very competent in his abilities and has become increasingly more focused on his studies and his service to the Marmion community. Henry works to be the best version of himself and desires to make the most of his Marmion experience. Michael Greco ’23: Awarded for Discipline Michael exemplifies what the principle of discipline looks like when lived out. He is a tremendous example of an individual that identifies the things that are important in life - from faith, to family, to others - and actively works to give each proper dedication on a daily basis. He treats all of his classmates with respect and is a well deserving award recipient. Jackson Steele ’22: Awarded for Prayer Jackson consistently volunteers for class prayer. He’s prepared for it, reads the scripture passage ahead of time, and offers a prayer that is meaningful and deep. He radiates a prayerful peaceful demeanor. God is obviously moving in his life!

Chimaobi Oguike ’25: Awarded for Stability Maobi is an awesome leader within the classroom, which is shown each and every day by his willing participation, high level of preparedness, and overall demeanor. Additionally, he treats others with a great deal of respect and demonstrates authentic humility and kindness through his interactions and relationships. James Kennedy ’24: Awarded for Love As many know, James is an incredibly talented and gifted individual. Perhaps, though, what is most commendable about James is that he does not keep those talents and gifts to himself. Instead, he demonstrates a remarkable sense of selflessness, generosity and Christian love by using them to make a difference in the lives of others - with no expectation of recognition, but out of the kindness of his heart. Edgar Rangel ’23: Awarded for Prayer Edgar is an outstanding example of a Christian young man who is respected and admired by the full scope of the Marmion community. Both peers (of all grade levels) and faculty recognize Edgar’s commitment to being the best version of himself in all aspects of life - spiritually, academically, physically, and socially. Nathan Smogur ’22: Awarded for Love Nathan is a rare and radiant example of agape love. It is one that springs from a deep interior faith and prayer life and an external demeanor that is always respectful of the other and filled with a genuine joy. He puts people at ease with his sense of humor and humility, and is always mindful of the needs and good of the other. We are blessed to have him as a model.

Bryan Scales ’25: Awarded for Hospitality Bryan is just a ball of energy and a light in his class. He is outgoing and embraces fun, laughter, conversation, and happiness to everyone he encounters. He works hard on his studies and is always impacting the environment he is in with his positive outlook and zest for life. He is respectful to those he needs to look up to and he organizes and motivates those he is surrounded by. He will go out of his way to talk to anyone and everyone. His energy is just a joy to be around and have in our school. Charlie Reynolds ’24: Awarded for Prayer Charlie is a quiet guy but very respectful and friendly. He does what is right without seeking the limelight. He attends daily Mass weekly and models what it means to be a good Christian witness of the Gospel messages. Zach Weiersheuser ’23: Awarded for Community Zach always finds ways to be involved in service and whenever another person needs help he immediately volunteers. He is always kind, considerate, and works hard. His work with the Special Olympics is always loving, respectful and precise. Any activity he’s involved in he treats the people involved with respect and kindness, always looking for ways to help them see the love of God. Josh Winkel ’22: Awarded for Community Josh went above and beyond to help one of his classmates with Mr. Marmion. His classmate shared how generous Josh was with his time and how he could not have done his performance without Josh’s help. Josh is exceptionally humble and would never take credit for doing anything extra for anyone and certainly deserves recognition for giving his time with no expectation of anything in return.

From Kairos 0 to Kairos 75

We are forever grateful to God for these blessings and to the hundreds of participants and leaders who, since 1997 (pictured below left), have stepped openly into God’s time. Kairos 75 (pictured below right) was held February 1-4, 2022 and was led by seniors Chase Breslin, Andrew Haddad, Tyler Hoeft, Joe Morcos, Luke Polley, Heath Powers, Charley Reavley, and Leo Verdecchia. Performing & Visual Arts ILMEA State Festival

Congratulations to our ILMEA State Festival participants: (above, left to right) Henry Hinley ’22, John Curley ’24, Marisa Manhart (RHS ’22), Luke Coffman ’24, Benjamin Goddard ’23, and Joseph Patzer ’23. These talented singers participated in the State Festival on Saturday, January 29. They spent three days in Peoria making music with the top 400 singers in the State. Over 10,000 singers auditioned for the state festival and only 400 were selected.

State of the Art Catholic High School Band Contest

On Saturday, February 19 the Knights of Columbus sponsored the 41st annual State Of The Art Catholic High School Band Contest. Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox was the host site. Fifteen Catholic high school bands participated in this year’s event. Bands competed in 1A, 2A, and 3A categories dependent on their selection of program. The Marmion Rosary Concert Band, under the direction of Mr. Brian Birch, received a First Division rating and was awarded Third Place in Class 1A competition. In addition, the Concert Band was awarded the Jim Moore Esprit de Corps Award. This award is based on conduct in and

around the homerooms, photo area, cafeteria area, warmup rooms, and performance areas during the day. Also taken into consideration is the students’ attitude, language, care of equipment, and respect for facilities and other performers. Students are observed in their willingness to participate in the activities available to them, as well as their meeting and communication with other players and bands. Under the direction of Mr. René Rosas, the Wind Ensemble received a First Division rating and tied for Second Place with Brother Rice/Mother McAuley in Class 3A competition. The Wind Ensemble (pictured at top of page) was also awarded Outstanding Brass section for Class 3A bands. It was an especially poignant experience for band president and trumpet section leader Ryan Sperlakis ’22. Ryan’s grandfather had recently passed away. Ryan and his sister Beth credit their grandfather for instilling a love of music in them, so Ryan dedicated his performance on Saturday to his grandfather.

Wisconsin Music Association

On Saturday, March 12, students from the Marmion Rosary Band and Marmion Men’s Choir participated in the WSMA District level Solo and Ensemble Festival. All participants are required to perform a solo. The Marmion Rosary Jazz Band and Jazz Combo participated in the ensemble portion of the competition. Marmion has been competing in the WSMA since its inception in 1984. It offers a State level component with students earning a first division (1) rating by scoring 5-11 points. However, if a student or ensemble scores between 5-8 points they are awarded with a *1 rating indicating they have been selected to continue to State level competition. Among the many Marmion students who competed, there were seven students who earned a perfect score. Marmion Men’s Chorus and Rosary Music program come together to make beautiful

On Tuesday, March 1, the Marmion Men’s Chorus joined the Rosary Music program in a beautiful choir performance. The audience was blown away as Mr. Brian Birch and Ms. Megan Drahos conducted the newly combined group of musicians. The immense range of this choir shook the walls of Rosary High School’s auditorium. The two choirs had mere hours to practice together before showtime, but spectators would have thought they had been working together all year, demonstrating the great musicianship of the singers.

at St. Anselm College, Manchester, NH. Upon receiving Marmion Abbey’s Christmas card, Fr. Iain was so impressed he felt compelled to write to Abbot John Brahill, OSB ’67: Greetings from Saint Anselm. As you might know, I have been designing and producing Christmas cards for our College and Abbey for many years. I also oversee a lot of collateral materials for our gallery/ museum collection at the College. I studied painting and drawing for my graduate work, and taught for a good while until my gallery “director” role really took over. Each year as the Christmas cards roll in to our Abbey, I look carefully at them and conduct my own contest. I have grown to love the discernment of the eye, coupled with years of experience with Christmas imagery, personal sentiment, the fun of making comparisons, etc. This year your Christmas card was a winner in my book! Whoever designed the card did a marvelous job of composing and setting the image, of paper choice, font style and sizing. It was just lovely and simple, but also very sophisticated looking~classy in its very own way. Of course what really won the day was the cover drawing by Mr. Henry Hutchings. The invention of space, the careful expression, the remarkable line quality~all of it is so charming. Please pass on my compliments. I hope he is being encouraged to develop this talent of his. I’m guessing he is devoted to drawing in some way. I’m saving the card. It’s a winner. Very touching. Thank you for sending such a lovely and charming Christmas greeting. Looking forward to more! Winter Garden of Youth

Each year the Aurora Public Art Commission highlights 200 artworks by Aurora youth (grades K-12) in the Winter Garden of Youth exhibit. This year’s artwork was on display from Feb. 4-March 18. The following Marmion artists were featured: John Danz ’24, Michael Di lorio ’22, Michael Gratz ’23, Ryan Grychowski ’22, and Jackson Wittenberg ’22.

The theme for the night was “love,” just two weeks after Valentine’s Day. Songs such as Be My Baby, My Girl, Let Me Call You Sweetheart, Silhouettes, and Valentine inspired feelings of romance from the substantial student section and parents in the audience.

Marmion Artist Recognized for Talent

In an effort to highlight the talents of Marmion students, Marmion Abbey encouraged art students to submit original artwork for the cover of the 2021 Abbey Christmas card. Cadets Winter Season Wrap-Up by Paul Chabura, Athletic Director

Building off a successful Fall season our Winter athletes did a wonderful job of continuing that momentum. Here’s a brief recap of our Winter sports.

Basketball

Coach Joe Piekarz and his staff did a wonderful job in their inaugural year. Our Cadets had a successful season going 15-14 overall and 6-8 in Catholic League play. The six Conference wins are the most wins in Conference since we joined the CCL, and this tied us for second place in the CCL White division. Our 15-14 record assured our Cadets of their first winning season since the 2014-15 campaign. We also earned our first Regional playoff win since 2015-16 and our first appearance in the Regional Championship game in nearly ten years. While we came short in winning a Regional title, our boys succeeded in renewing the excitement of Cadets basketball! Congratulations to our All-Conference selections: Colin Wainscott ’23 received his 3rd All-Catholic League honors; Sean Kavanaugh ’22 and Trevon Roots ’23 were selected as Honorable Mention selections. Hockey

After graduating a very strong senior class, our Hockey Cadets knew they had to step up to secure another successful season. Overall our Varsity Cadets finished the year with a 13-17-1 record and 9-11 in the CCHL. They earned enough points to earn their second consecutive trip to the CCHL playoffs, where they unfortunately lost in the first round. Chase Breslin ’22 (pictured) led the entire CCHL in points scored. This is the second consecutive year a Marmion Cadet has led the league in scoring. For his outstanding season, he was recognized as an All-Star for the CCHL. A lot of young faces are within our Hockey program, so the future is very bright.

Swimming

The 2021-2022 Cadets Swim Team, made up of almost 65% freshmen and sophomores, finished with a dual meet record of 5-4, beating teams like Oswego East Co-op, St. Ignatius and St. Charles North, while falling to teams like Loyola, West Chicago Co-op and Fenwick, all of whom finished in the top 10 at State. While the team finished 4th at Conference, 5th at Sectionals, and tied for 35th at State, our swimmers completed their season-culminating championship meets with 97% season best-times and 94% lifetime best-times. Additionally, the team finished the Sectional meet with almost 57% (13 of 23) of their swims qualifying for the IHSA State Meet.

Marmion had another impressive showing at the individual Sectionals. Of our 14 Sectional qualifiers, 10 advanced to State: Carrigan, Tegan Chumbley ’23, Garcia, Lesher, Teddy Perry ’23, Tyler Perry ’22, Pigoni, Scheck, Santino Scolaro ’23, and Kenneth Siwicki ’22. Garcia, Tyler Perry, and Lesher were also Sectional Champions.

The team finished the season with six All-Conference performances, including the 200 Medley Relay team (pictured above) of Evan Conti ’25, Tyler Conner ’23, Sean Wehner ’23, and Jackson Oostman ’22. Oostman also finished 2nd in the 200 IM with Wehner finishing 3rd. Wehner was also 3rd in the 100 Butterfly, while Oostman was 2nd in the 100 Freestyle, and Conner was 3rd in the 500 Freestyle. Additionally, the team finished with four All-State performances, including the same group named above in the 200 Medley Relay, Wehner in 100 Butterfly and 100 Backstroke, along with the 400 Freestyle Relay team of Oostman, Tyler Bardak ’25, Wehner, and Conner. Furthermore, Wehner’s performance in the 100 Backstroke garners All-American honors through the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA). In addition to these performances, Marmion also saw our first athlete compete at the IHSA State Finals in the Athletes with Disabilities (AWD) category. Cameron Aristuk ’24 took 5th place in the 50, 100, and 200 Freestyles in the B division, while also taking 6th place in the 100 Breaststroke.

Wrestling

Our Cadet Wrestlers earn a dual record of 12-2 overall and had the following finishes at their tournaments throughout the regular season: • 1st Place - Barrington Tournament • 5th Place - Dan Gable ‘Donnybrook’ Invitational (IA) • 4th Place - Crown Point (IN) • 1st Place - Granite City • 2nd Place - Chicago Catholic League tournament • 1st Place - Regionals

It was great to have the State tournament back in Champaign and to have all of our wrestlers and fans back to watch. Five of our ten wrestlers made it to Saturday, the final day of wrestling: Carrigan, Garcia, Lesher, Tyler Perry, and Pigoni. Carrigan finished in fifth, Lesher finished in fourth, Tyler Perry (picture below) took second, and Garcia was the State Champion in the 113lbs bracket! A great weekend for Marmion wrestling.

Overall, it was a tremendous year for our Wrestling Cadets and with a lot of young talent returning we hope for even better results next year.

Rifle Team

Due to the lingering effects of the COVID pandemic, the Rifle Team had a very short season, with only three competitions. One of which was the Army Air Rifles Service National Championship (Camp Perry, OH) held mid-February. Congratulations to Alex Pall ’22 who took 2nd and received the silver medal, and to Anthony Hotko ’22 who took 3rd and received the bronze medal. Both qualified to return to Camp Perry for the All Service National Championship. Members of the Sporter Rifle Team that also competed in Army Nationals were Declan Anderson ’24, Robert Jungnecht ’23, Adam Ozsvath ’25, Louis Ruggiero Shimkus ’24, and Joe Walsh ’24.

The CCL Wrestling Championship is always a tough invite and this year it was no different. We had eight Cadets make the finals: Tyler Aters ’23, Collin Carrigan ’24, Jameson Garcia ’23, Jack Lesher ’24, Tyler Perry ’22, Donald Pigoni ’24, Sean Scheck ’23, and Connor Thompson ’23. Garcia, Carrigan, and Lesher all won their weight classes. All eight were named All-Catholic League wrestlers. The IHSA postseason began at Naperville Central for the IHSA Regionals, with all 14 of our wrestlers making the Finals, and 10 of the 14 crowned Regional Champions! Due to this great showing, our Cadets won their ninth team Regional Title!

In the News ................................................................ Flannigan Rifles Drill Team by Edmund Koch ‘22

The Flannigan Rifles Drill Team has fully recovered from two years mired with COVID. In early January the team competed in Holland, OH against regional competition. They came away with a clean sweep of trophies and first place. In early February, the team competed against local competition at the West Aurora Blackhawk drill meet. The team won the Armed Overall Championship with a fantastic performance. In early March the team traveled to Fort Wayne, IN to compete at Concordia Lutheran High School, and again our Flannigan Rifles again came away with the majority of first place trophies. A large part of the team’s success can be attributed to the drive of Team Commander Aidan Bayer ‘22. The underclassmen of the team have also contributed heavily. Notably Ian Roskuszka ‘24 who won the Homer Clendenen Commander’s Cup at the Concordia Lutheran Drill meet. Flannigan Rifles has high aspirations for their upcoming Nationals competition in Daytona Beach, FL this April.

in the last seven years since its return it has raised over $20,000 for several incredible organizations. The show, hosted by a team of student emcees, involves three rounds of competition in which student contestants perform at their best. The performances often feature song, dance, music, magic tricks, comedy, and a wide range of other (unique) talents! Following their performances and a round of questions, the contestants are scored by a panel of faculty judges who determine the winner of the coveted Mr. Marmion crown. This year’s contestants, Rory Bennett ‘24, Robert Gramley ‘24, Evan Ruud ‘23, Isaiah Smith ‘23, Nico Carrera ‘22, and Adrian Ruiz ‘22, took their performances to the next level with a slew of amazing acts; and hosts, Anthony Kuceba ‘22, Ian Ortega ‘22, and Connor Tulley ‘23, kept the audience laughing and entertained throughout the evening. Eventually, following his performances of two songs (including a self-written original), a dance routine, and some creative final question answers, Nico Carrera ‘22 was named Mr. Marmion 2022! Nico selected CASA Kane County as the recipient of this year’s proceeds. Congratulations to Nico, all of the contestants, hosts, and everyone who worked behind the scenes to make this year’s event another success!

Cadets Awarded at Military Night Marmion’s JROTC program held its annual Military Night on March 13. The evening included an awards ceremony, perfomances by the Flannigan Rifles Drill Team, and remarks by Dr. Tyler Jost ’04. Dr. Jost is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Brown University, RI, as well as an Assistant Professor of China Studies at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs. His research focuses on national security decisionmaking, bureaucratic politics, and Chinese foreign policy. Dr. Jost earned his doctorate from the Department of Government at Harvard University. He held postdoctoral fellowships in the International Security Program at the Kennedy School of Government, as well as in the China and the World Program at Columbia University. His research has been supported by the Smith Richardson Foundation, the U.S. Institute of Peace, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies. He earned a Masters in Chinese Studies from the University of London and graduated with honors from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Before his career in academia, Dr. Jost served as a military intelligence officer. He deployed to Afghanistan twice, the first with the 101st Airborne Division and the second as aide-decamp to the Commander of the NATO Rule of Law Field Force. He subsequently served as a company commander in US Cyber Command and completed brief rotations in the Office of the Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon. The Class of 2022 Cadets who have received an appointment or nomination to a Service Academy, have received and/or are finalists for a ROTC scholarship, or have enlisted in one of the United States Military Services were also introduced: Jacob Bottarini has received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point and will be joining the West Point Class of 2026 this summer. William Donahoe is a finalist for an Air Force ROTC Scholarship. He plans on attending Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa next year. Anthony Kuceba has been awarded a 4-year Army ROTC Scholarship. He will be attending Washington University in Saint Louis next year. Ethan Morga is enlisting in the Illinois Army National Guard and will be shipping out this summer to complete his initial training as a combat engineer.

Mason O’Connor enlisted in the Illinois Army National Guard last year and completed his initial training this past summer at Fort Benning, GA as an Infantryman. Blake Powers has received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis and he will be joining the Midshipman class of 2026 this summer.

Alex Pall has received an appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York and he has also received a Congressional Nomination to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. He will be

Tyler Suess has received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point and he has been awarded a 3-year Army ROTC scholarship to Duke. He is undecided at this time where he will be attending.

The Abbot Marmion Society (AMS) was established in 1973 as a way to recognize the generosity of individuals, companies and foundations who support the Abbey, Academy, Abbey Farms, and the Guatemala Mission. The society recognizes its members’ support, provides a vehicle for inspiration and leadership for the advancement of Marmion, and ensures continuing financial support for the ministries of the monks of Marmion. There are currently 1,158 Life Members (living and deceased with couples counting as one), who have each given over $10,000 cumulatively. There are 109 Sustaining Members who have given a total of $1,500 during the 2021 Fiscal Year, but do not yet qualify for Life Membership. On Saturday, March 5, Abbot John Brahill, OSB ’67 welcomed these guests to the annual AMS Mass and Dinner. He recognized 24 new Life Members; 16 new Sustaining Members; and 18 current Life Members who, through their continued kind-hearted generosity, have moved to a new level of giving during Fiscal Year 2021 (July 1, 2020 through June 30, 2021). Marmion-Dunham Scholars Program by: Kathleen Hausmann, Executive Director of Advancement

Marmion is excited to announce the Marmion-Dunham Scholars Program being launched this fall. Thanks to a generous grant from the Dunham Foundation, along with matching funds from the Marmion Academy Guardian Angel Fund, Marmion Academy will provide needs-based scholarships for 10 incoming freshmen for the 2022-2023 school year, covering all costs associated with attending the school. The majority of the scholarships will be awarded to Aurora residents. Marmion Academy is an Aurora-based school and it is our desire to educate students from Aurora. However, we recognize there are many families in our city who cannot provide a Marmion education for their sons without assistance. The Marmion-Dunham Scholars program will provide opportunities to families who never thought Marmion was possible for them. We are very grateful to the Dunham Foundation for creating this initiative. The Dunham Foundation, established in 1996 by John C. Dunham, who was passionate about giving back to the city he cherished, is committed to providing positive, multi-

generational support to all individuals and families in its service area. The Foundation believes this support lays the groundwork for successful generations to come and builds an infrastructure for a community where all can thrive. The Dunham Foundation focuses on investing in three areas: education, economic growth, and community. Marmion’s educational objective is to educate the whole person by establishing a climate conducive to spiritual growth and leadership. It is a culture of leadership and a sense of family. Rooted in our Catholic, Benedictine faith tradition, we are called to be a community that promotes authentic care and concern for others. Because of who we are, we want to share the uniqueness of our school and offer opportunities that could be life-altering for disadvantaged families in our community. There is a new face and voice waiting to greet you in the Advancement Office! Mrs. Sheila Bangs is the Advancement Administrative Assistant and started on November 29, 2021. Prior to coming to Marmion, Mrs. Bangs was the Development Database Coordinator at the Morton Arboretum for 17 years and performed many of the same duties that will be asked of her here at Marmion. Mrs. Bangs’ main focus is the management of our donor database, including the processing of our generous donations and acknowledgement letters, as well as general administrative support for our team. She has incredible administrative, database and process-improvement experience and her friendly, welcoming demeanor is well-suited for our team and busy office environment. Sheila and her husband, Steve, live in North Aurora and their son John Paul ’24 is at Marmion. Mrs. Bangs is an avid animal lover, is deeply connected in her Catholic faith and is secretly a competitive poker player!

Campus Renewal Campaign

Only $195,000 Needed to Reach $7 Million Goal by Nancy E. Hansen, Associate Director of Advancement

We are so blessed! The Campus Renewal Campaign is nearing completion and soon we will celebrate the investment of $7 million into our beautiful campus. Thanks to campaign donors, we have already completed much of the needed work including replacing roofs on the Abbey’s main building, infirmary, and lobby, as well as Benkert Hall, the Battaglia Center, Lux Dinning Hall, and Alumni Hall. The donations have also funded repaving of the Abbey driveway and masonry work on the Abbey, Abbey infirmary, Benkert Hall and the Battaglia Center. We were also able to install air conditioning in the Lux Dining Hall, as well as booster pumps and emergency shut-off valves in our powerhouse. We feel so blessed to witness the renewal of these vital resources for our campus and our mission. With your help, Marmion Abbey and Academy will continue to have a transformational impact on students, families and the community for generations to come. We thank God for everything you have already done to assist us with our mission and have faith that the funds will soon be in place to finalize this round of renovations.

The “grand finale” of this campus renewal will be the monumental task of replacing the old boilers. The new boiler system, made up of two smaller units, will operate at 95% efficiency. One of the old boilers has been refurbished and will become our back up boiler. We are optimistic the campaign will reach its goal and the new boiler system will be installed this summer.

A Memorial Financial Aid Fund in Memory of +Richard F. Murphy ’50 by Fr. Charles Reichenbacher, OSB ’59, Director of Planned Giving

The +Richard F. Murphy ’50 Memorial Financial Aid Fund was established in 2021 by his widow, Marie. Dick and Marie moved in 2013 from Batavia to their lake house in Manitowish Waters, WI, where Marie still lives. Dick’s sons are Marmion graduates: Robert ’75 and Michael ’77 (Michael was a Marmion trustee for two terms); as are grandsons, Dan Feehan ’01 and Michael ’14. Dick was the president and C.E.O. of ZefTron and Zeftek, Inc. of Montgomery, which made braking equipment and braking systems for the railroad industry. His father, Harry Murphy, was the president of the Burlington Railroad. Today it is the Burlington, Northern, Santa Fe Railroad. Richard established in his lifetime the Donald Wilkinson ’50 Memorial Minority Scholarship Fund in honor and memory of his classmate and friend, +Donald Wilkinson ’50, the son of Marie and Charlie Wilkinson. To date, nine students have benefited from this Fund.

Marmion Athletic Hall of Fame by: Bill Fox ’74, Director of Alumni and Constituent Relations

On January 28, five new members of the Marmion Athletic Hall of Fame were honored at our annual induction ceremony. Our Hall of Fame recognizes those Cadet athletes who achieved outstanding individual athletic accomplishments while also exemplifying the moral characteristics instilled in all members of the Marmion Brotherhood. Gary M. Edwards ’69 was a baseball and football standout as a Cadet. Gary was passionate about baseball and played on our Cadet squads during all four years at MMA. He was named a First Team All-Conference in both his junior and senior years under Coach Joe Nardone. He enjoyed an amazing .400 batting average in both of those campaigns. Ryne Reder ’06 was a three-year letterman on the football team where he was a Captain his senior year. He was the Amby Geib trophy winner in both his Junior and Senior year as the team’s MVP. Ryne was a two-time First Team SCC All-Conference player, two-time Beacon News All-Area and Second Team Daily Herald All-Area player, as well as a First Team Tri-Cities All-Area player. Ryne was a two-year letterman in both basketball and baseball, captaining both of those squads in his Senior year. Ben Kanute ’11 was a two-sport athlete in cross country and swimming. He earned three varsity letters in cross country, was second team All-Conference his freshman year and first team All-Conference each year after that. The Cadets won the conference championship in each of the four years that he ran. In his senior year, he was the team captain and conference champion. As a swimmer, Ben earned four varsity letters, first team AllConference all four years, and was a team captain in both his junior and senior year. He specialized in distance events including the 500 freestyle, in which he was a qualifier for the IHSA state meet all four years of his Marmion career. He earned All-State honors in his junior and senior year by

advancing to the state finals in the 500 free medaling in that event. Ben began his triathlon career at an early age, competing on USA Triathlon’s youth elite and junior elite circuits, winning one national title as a youth elite, and two as a junior elite. He earned his first International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Cup medal in 2014 and was named to the 2016 U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team. He competed in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and is Marmion’s only Olympian to date. George L. Fisher ’13 was a four-year varsity wrestler at Marmion and secured the most mat wins in our program’s history. He was a 2A State Champion in 2011 and 2A runner-up in 2012. In his Senior year, George was the 3A Illinois State Champion while serving as Captain of the first Marmion wrestling team to place as runner-ups in Illinois 3A Team competition. George believes his achievements would not have been possible without the support of the entire Marmion community; from the student body, faculty and staff, and most of all, from the monks of Marmion Abbey! Johnny Jimenez ’14 was a four-year varsity wrestler and four-time IHSA class 3A State Champion at the 103, 113, 120 and 126-pound weight divisions - Marmion’s first and only four-time wrestling State Champion. Jimenez was the 2013-14 team captain and MVP and finished his high school career with a record of 158 wins and 10 losses. Only one of those losses came during State competition. We congratulate each of our 2022 Marmion Athletic Hall of Fame inductees and welcome them into this distinguished collection of Marmion Cadet athletes and coaches. Five Generations of Involvement and Four Generations of Cadets by Nancy E. Hansen, Associate Director of Advancement

In the fall of 1933, Marmion Academy welcomed its first students. Just three year later John Lentz ’40 became a Cadet and his mother, Catherine Lentz, volunteered with the newly formed Mothers’ Club. John and Catherine started a family tradition that remains strong today.

Just a few years later, Tom’s sons, Brian ’89 and Nick ’96, lived up to their Uncle Al’s statement “This family always goes to Marmion.” And so did, Brian’s son, Zack ’17. Tom’s daughters, Lisa (’92) and Anna (’99) attended Rosary. Anna married Marmion Cadet, Pat Sluka ’99. Nick took his commitment to Marmion one step further in 2010 when he joined Marmion’s staff. He is currently the Assistant Manager of the Maintenance Department and helps to keep the campus running smoothly. He also continues the family tradition of volunteerism. “My dad, brother, and I all serve on the Marmion Alumni Board of Directors. Throughout the year we gather and volunteer alongside our fellow alumni at Marmion events. Besides being great opportunities for us to engage with the Marmion community, these fundraisers also provide us an opportunity to give back to the school that has played such a central role in our lives,” Nick shared. “Hopefully someday my nephew Zack will join us on the Alumni Board.”

John’s son, Al ’65, was the next to attend Marmion and made sure his younger brother attended as well. “My parents allowed me to choose,” shared Tom Lentz ’67. “There was a new Catholic school blocks from our house. Initially, I chose that newer school. My parents said nothing, but thank God my brother Al said, ‘But Tom, this family always goes to Marmion,’ and the rest was history.” During the summer of 1964, Al and Tom worked at Marmion to pay off their tuition. “It was hard work, but I enjoyed working with fellow students,” Tom recalled. “The adult maintenance crew taught us how to work.” He especially remembers how much respect he had for Art Linden, Clarence, and Bill Dickson, Sr. Tom’s involvement didn’t stop after graduation. He has stayed active with the Marmion Alumni Association and was a critical member of Marmion’s custodial staff from 2003 – 2018. Tom shared, “After 70 years of Marmion always in my life I can honestly say that Marmion has become the Lentz’s second family.” The monks have always been at the center of that second family, enjoying many dinners and special occasions together. Tom also remembers how they were there for them during a very difficult time in 1983, “My mother laid in the hospital with a broken leg as my dad was dying in ICU. We were in mom’s room when word came of his death. My family was devastated not knowing what to say or do. We felt lost and alone, but then the face of an angel appeared in mom’s door. Father Bede came to be with us. How he heard of dad’s death in such a short amount of time is unknown. He sat on my mom’s bed and brought peace and comfort to us with his loving words.”

Nick encourages others to join the brotherhood, “Marmion has consistently provided the highest quality education for almost ninety years. Combined with its outstanding leadership programs and its focus on the development of Benedictine values, Marmion is truly a special place. Any student lucky enough to attend Marmion will graduate as a young man armed with the tools to handle the exciting challenges of starting a career and family.” His father, Tom, echoes that sentiment, “Working at Marmion, I saw firsthand that this place provides a very loving environment. I highly recommend Marmion to any young man looking for a place where you will be welcomed, appreciated, highly educated, and most of all loved. Then someday you’ll have another family that will support you like my family has had.” Eighty-six years after the first member of the Lentz family became a Cadet, their connection to Marmion is a strong as ever.

Class of 1954 In 2021, Joe Hernandez celebrated his 21st year of conducting a 2-day Raku workshop over Labor Day weekend in Door County at Ellison Bay Pottery Shop in addition to his 35th year judging the pottery competition at the Sandwich Fair.

Class of 1955 Lou Drendel recently published the 31st book in his Illustrated series of military aircraft. P-3 Orion Illustrated tells the history of this iconic US Navy Patrol airplane, in over 200 color photos and illustrations. Class of 1956 James Murphy sent in this update: “After graduation I spent 4 years in the US Air Force. I married Diane in February 1960 - 62 years ago! We have four children, ten

Sean Eshaghy of Chicago is now the Director of Curriculum for the Archdiocese of Chicago schools. Sean recently began the Br. Anselm Mangano, OSB Memorial Abbey Church Flower Fund to pay for the flowers used to decorate the altar and church. It is in memory of Br. Anselm, his former dorm prefect, who served him well in his youth. Br. Anselm, before his untimely death, oversaw the Abbey Church and loved flowers!

Cadets Over Korea

When MAJ Tom Fox ’03 (right) arrived at his new post at Camp Humphreys, the “Army’s Home in Korea,” he reported to his Battalion Commander, LTC Peter V. Schmitt ’96. Neither of the Marmion grads knew they were in for such a small world coincidence. LTC Schmitt has been in command of 4-2 Attack Battalion, the “Death Dealers,” since the summer of 2020. The unit just fielded the latest version of the AH-64E Apache attack helicopter, so Pete and Tom had been waiting for the opportunity to fly together. The Marmion connection has been awesome for them, and they’ve enjoyed the opportunity to share stories about Fr. Phil Kremer, OSB and so many other Marmion legends as they do their small parts in deterring North Korean aggression.

Dr. Tyler Jost of Cambridge, MA was the guest speaker for Marmion’s Military Night on March 13, 2022. See page 15 to learn more about Dr. Jost.

Bobby and Kelly Winkel were married November 26,2021 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elmhurst. The Best Man was the groom’s brother, Jake ’11. Groomsmen were the groom’s brother, Brian ’13, and classmate, Greg Askwith ’10. In attendance were fellow alumni Alex Heinen ’08, Tyler Heinen ’11, Zack Young ’10, Ethan Young ’14, and Jon Young ’16.

Class of 2008 Michael and Brooke Brown welcomed their son, Nathan Harris, on October 28, 2021. The family happily resides in Lake Zurich.

Class of 2011 Sean and Amanda Bergan were married November 20, 2021, at St. Patrick Parish in Yorkville. Best Man was the groom’s brother, Tom ’15. Groomsmen were fellow classmates Michael Tavierne ’11, Matt Frost ’11, and George Bardenheier ’11. Graham and Ally Glasgow welcomed their daughter, Charlotte Grace, on December 18, 2021. Graham is a right guard for the Denver Broncos. Ben Kanute of Phoenix, AZ was inducted into the Marmion Athletic Hall of Fame on January 28, 2022. See page 19 for details.

Two of the groomsmen were fellow classmates, Alex Arenkill ’13 and Liam Creamer ’13. The happy couple lives in Charlotte, NC with their golden retriever, Oliver.
