2019-2020 Annual Report Dear Friends of Marmion, We are beyond grateful for the continued generosity of our alumni, parents (past and present) and dear friends who partnered with us this year as we carried out the mission and vision that began 88 years ago, by the Benedictine Monks of Marmion Abbey. Despite finishing out the year amidst a pandemic, we ended the year strong because of the dedication and support of our Marmion family! This 2019-2020 Annual Report recognizes all those who very generously provided financial support to the Abbey, Academy, Abbey Farms and the Guatemala Priory over this past fiscal year (July 1, 2019– June 30, 2020). During this fiscal year, Marmion was blessed to receive $3,335,533 in donations in support of the ministries of the monks of Marmion Abbey. These generous gifts came from 1,625 individual donors (couples are counted as one) from 45 States (see map below). Here is a snapshot of what we achieved this year as a result of your generous donations: we educated 533 students at the Academy, provided $977,068 in financial aid and scholarships, completed the reroofing of the Battaglia Center along with the refurbishing of one boiler that we will keep for redundancy once we replace the other boiler. Additionally, we completed a masonry restoration project and HVAC replacement at the Abbey, completed the retention pond extension at Abbey Farms, added a mini-bus to our transportation fleet, completed renovations in the Decio Library and purchased new classroom furniture, as well as a dishwasher for the kitchen in the Lux Dining Hall. The Academy relies on the success of the annual fund mailing, Giving Tuesday, Marmathon, Oktoberfest, Salute to Youth, the BIG GIVE, the Guardian Angel Fund and our Alumni Association events to fill the gap between tuition ($13,400) and the cost of educating our students (a gap of $2,400 per student). For the third consecutive year, the MARMION FUND goal of $1.25 million was exceeded! The largest individual gift received for the MARMION FUND this year was $100,000 and the largest bequest received was $512,501. Donations that are directed to the Abbey assist the monks in covering the cost of health care, education for our younger monks and building maintenance. Profits from the events and online sales at Abbey Farms also provide income for the monks’ living expenses. The monks at our San Jose Priory minister to the underserved people of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. Donations made as part of our Poor Souls mailing and Guatemala Annual Appeal provide means for the monks to continue this important ministry. Jan and Tom Montiegel Memorial Scholarship Fund by Fr. Charles Reichenbacher, OSB ‘59, Director of Planned Giving
Tom Montiegel of Sleepy Hollow, after the death of his wife Jan on March 8, 2016, established the Jan Montiegel Scholarship Fund in her memory, directing that academic scholarships from this Fund be awarded primarily to Hispanic students. They were married just a few months short of fifty-years at the time of her death. Three years later, on October 23, 2019, Tom died. Marmion decided to rename their fund the Jan and Tom Montiegel Memorial Scholarship Fund, but still with an emphasis on Hispanic students. Tom was the Associate Director of Development at Marmion Abbey/Marmion Academy (19952010) for two successful capital campaigns, and a good friend of mine. Tom was the Alumni Director at Marquette University; Jan was the director of special events at Marquette. Tom was also Vice President for Development at Dayton University and at Northern Illinois University. The Jan and Tom Montiegel Memorial Scholarship Fund is now funded at $178,770. Also in their estate plans they specified that Marmion Academy receive an unrestricted gift of almost $500,000. This generous gift is being applied to a combination of needs as a result of the pandemic, including the Guardian Angel Fund, which provides financial aid assistance, and the necessary equipment and supplies needed to keep our campus safe. 2019-2020 Annual Giving

Virtual Food Drive

One of the many challenges caused by the coronavirus pandemic has been an increase in lack of food security, creating an unprecedented demand for goods provided by food pantries across the country and in our local community. Some organizations, for example, have been serving triple their typical number of patrons. Nick Coffman ‘21, ‘21 son of Terry ‘89 and Nicole, recognized this great need, and in the Marmion spirit of Christian service to others, decided to take action. Nick selflessly and enthusiastically organized and facilitated a “virtual food drive” at the end of May in which he invited all members of the Marmion community to participate through the contribution of online monetary donations. Through this effort, over $7,300 was raised to benefit the Aurora Interfaith Food Pantry and Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry. Nick determined that every $25 donated would feed a family of five for three weeks. This means that 292 families were able to be fed for a three-week time period! We are grateful to Nick for his initiative, concern for the less fortunate, and example of Christian leadership; and we are humbled and truly thankful for the generosity of the Marmion community. As Nick stated in a message to donors, “Throughout my Marmion journey one thing that has always moved me is the power we as a community have when we are united towards a common goal. This food drive is yet another reminder of the influence we possess as a fraternity of Marmion men.”

As the length of time the pandemic kept much of our world shut down stretched from weeks into months, we became increasingly concerned about many of our Marmion families and their ability to pay tuition for the 2020-2021 academic year. We knew if we shared our concerns those who could help would. So, in May we set out to secure an additional $243,662 in financial aid for our Guardian Angel Fund in response to the economic realities created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Through personal contacts, the BIG GIVE, a direct mail appeal, and tuition credit donations from members of the Class of 2020, our incredibly generous Guardian Angels provided $252,999.87 for our Guardian Angel Fund. Class of 1974 Financial Aid Fund
Over the past few years, a group of classmates from the MMA Class of 1974 started meeting annually in different destinations across the country. Out of these gatherings, the group decided to embark on a mission to assist future generations of Marmion families. Working with Marmion’s Advancement Office it was determined that a financial aid fund would be the best path toward ensuring the success of their stated mission. The group sent a notice to all of their classmates informing them of the initiative and inviting them to participate. Fifteen members of the Class of 1974 have answered the call to date. The Class of 1974 Financial Aid Fund has now been established and will begin assisting families with the 2020-2021 school year. “This is the first of its kind for Marmion’s financial aid fund. Our class can now assist a deserving family to make a Marmion education possible for their son. I sincerely hope other classes are inspired by this initiative and create their own legacy fund,” said Bill Fox ’74, Marmion’s Director of Alumni Relations. Since 1971 Marmion has offered student financial assistance for families with a proven need. The need is ever increasing, especially this year due to the economic challenges from the pandemic thrust upon many Marmion families.

During our recent Big Give campaign, which raised more than $160,000 for our Guardian Angel Fund, we had two alumni who gave significant challenge gifts that catapulted us to a new record for this year’s annual initiative! John Beck’ 59 gave a $25,000 gift in memory of his late wife, Marianne, and Ed and Elizabeth O’Reilly ’86 gave a challenge gift of $10,000. These kindhearted combined gifts helped to generate $70,000 in financial aid for our students and families - 44% of the total amount raised! Our sincere gratitude to John and +Marianne Beck and Ed and Elizabeth O’Reilly for their incredible generosity! We would also like to thank the Marmion Parents’ Club who generously donated $14,000 to this year’s BIG GIVE. 100% of the proceeds from this year’s intiative went to Marmion’s Guardian Angel Fund to help families in need make the dream of the Marmion Advantage a reality for their son(s)!
