THE HUB OF THE UNIVERSE! The Tall Ships are coming to Boston this summer, and you know what that means — the Annual Conference is coming to Boston this winter!

Tall Ships America’s 44th Annual Conference on Sail Training and Tall Ships will take place at the Seaport Hotel on the South Boston waterfront on February 9 & 10. The conference will be preceded by the Safety Under Sail Forum, the Educators and Administrators Forum and the Host Ports Seminar on February 8.

As reported in the fall issue, this summer Tall Ships America will collaborate with Sail Training International on a transatlantic Tall Ships Regatta marking the 150th anniversary of the Canadian Confederation.

This event will bring ships from European host ports to Boston on June 17-22 and then on to various ports in Canada and the Gulf of St. Lawrence before arriving in Quebec City in July. From Quebec City the ships will return to Europe in September.

Tall Ships America is planning port events all along the Atlantic Coast, culminating in the Sail Boston event, as part of their Tall Ships Challenge Atlantic Coast 2017 series.

Around the World with Dan Moreland Daniel Moreland grew up in the West Indies, where as a boy he was fascinated by the island sloops and schooners as well as occasional visiting tall ships. After working in ships and boatyards down island, he shipped on the Romance under Arthur Kimberly and later on the Danmark, one of the visitors he admired as a child. Moreland conducted an award-winning rebuild of the Ernestina in the 1980s, and later worked with Walter Rybka on Niagara.

By the early 1990s, Moreland was looking for a vessel to convert to a barque for sail-training. He found Picton Castle in Europe. With the help of a small crew, he brought her across the Atlantic to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, where she underwent a multimillion-dollar refit. Since then, Picton Castle has circled the world six times, and Moreland has become one of the best-known sail-trainers in the world.

Marlinspike: You grew up in the West Indies?

Dan Moreland: Due to the circumstances of my fortunate birth, I was raised in the West Indies — this was a thousand years ago, when the earth was not as warm as it is now — and there were still plenty of island schooners. That was how you got around, that was how you moved goods and people from place to place. Usually there was town dock full of schooners and sloops and whatnot, and as little kids we’d go down there, supposedly to buy bananas or coffee, but we’d spend hours down there and make a day of it.

I was in awe of the men who sailed these vessels. Their vessels were often dirty, but they were still great ships, and I saw these guys as the knights of the sea, I really did! It made a big impression on me. The whole culture was intriguing.

So I went back to the States, got through high school as soon as I could, and went back where I belonged. I worked in windjammer operations, sailed from different islands, and that was very cool. It was essential to my identity and it also taught me how to get things done. These were incredibly capable people, making great things happen despite scant resources. And isn’t that an essential tenet of sail training?

Doing a lot with a little? So that’s where it all started for me.

MS: How did you make the transition from bouncing around boats and boatyards in the West Indies to sail training? Was Romance your first ship?

DM: No, that would be Maverick, a windjammer ketch

out of the Virgin Islands, then Romance. Being in St. Thomas, seeing the Danmark come in every year, that was pretty cool! A beautiful ship the size of the Cutty Sark, coming into port! We thought she was the neatest thing on earth. And I thought, with the hubris of youth, that someday I would sail on her! A ridiculous idea. Turned out to be not so ridiculous.

But I was on Romance for four years, under Captain Arthur Kimberly. He was a Age of Sail-trained master mariner. He went to sea in the 1930s, sailing windjammers, big ships, barques, stuff like that. Now, sail training is still a thing, of course, but it used to have a somewhat different meaning: someone who had trained under sail. You as a professional mariner got your start in sailing ships, and that was viewed as highly valuable.

Capt. Kimberly was a master mariner, a rigger, a sailmaker, and I served under him as mate on her first world voyage and that was obviously a seminal event for any young man. I was still very young!

At 23 I got off that ship and I thought, I’ll just go to Denmark, which I did. I foolishly thought I could get on the Danmark, which was ridiculous, but it happened!

I became the bosun. Her skippers — there were two captains — were also both Age of Sail-trained master mariners who had sailed on big commercial ships and schooners. As much as the ships, it’s the guys you sail under, that’s critical. So I had a very fortunate start in this business, and it goes on from there.

By the way, Danmark is still going strong, well-skippered and well-managed to this day — almost uniquely so. But we probably don’t have time for that discussion.

MS: After 20 years and six circumnavigations, people naturally associate you with the Picton Castle. But over the years you’ve worked aboard other well-known vessels.

DM: I was skipper of the Pride of Baltimore, the dear old thing that sank some years back. I was on a brigantine called Phoenix. I worked on tugboats, which I found very positive. I worked for Moran, I worked on lobsterboats, fishing... it’s all part of the mix, and I encourage our crew, when they get off Picton Castle, to mix it up a little! You’ll learn a lot. You’ll get a different perspective.

I was with Ernestina for most of a decade — that was fascinating. An incredible experience, in which I got to

restore the vessel and get her going. When I got off, she was a successful, multicultural, going concern. An amazing experience which could not be duplicated today. I got to meet all these guys who had had sailed on her during her various careers: fishermen, Arctic explorers, Cape Verdeans. The vessel is reproducible, the experience isn’t!

The Niagara? I was not out there looking for a big wooden vessel, but I had been a consultant on Niagara for a while, and they were quite receptive to being pointed in the right direction. But I didn’t get to sail on her until Walter Rypka said, ‘Hey, come be a mate.’ So I was there for a couple of years and that was wonderful. Working with Walter Rypka was great, he’s an old shipmate and friend and a national treasure of a human being and mariner. I call him Clark Kent, because he’s really Superman.

Most of the vessels that have survived from the Age of Sail survived because they had some intrinsic use, some trade that they could keep doing. Elissa, Ernestina — they survived because they had a trade. Niagara was the opposite of that.

She was a huge and radical military brig that was scuttled just a few years after her useful period. She was resurrected from time to time, and then when the big resurrection came down, the energy behind her was really positive. They wanted to interpret the War of 1812 but also to sail her. It was a very improbable project. Most of the sailing ships we have today are small versions of their class; Niagara was a big version of her class! But we made it work.

I knew I wasn’t going to be on the Great Lakes forever. I 6

had a mind to do Picton Castle or something like her. I wanted to see if we couldn’t establish something that could provide a deep-water, square-rig sailing experience.

MS: What was your business plan when you went looking for vessels?

DM: A lot of these projects come about because someone falls in love with a rusty or rotten old ship. They work to save the boat, and then they try to figure out something to do with it! No. This was mission-driven.

Large — between 200 and 300 tons — was important.

Square rig was important. Steel was important. Stability and as much material goodness as you could get. The intention all along was to make world voyages, deep-water voyages.

The mission came first, and we found a ship to match.

That’s a critical consideration. Figure out what you want to do first, and then go get a ship to match it, not the other way around!

The operational plan was well evolved prior to looking for the ship. I looked at 40 different vessels, and probably inspected ten or twelve of them. I was really looking for something a bit smaller. I would have preferred something the size of Joseph Conrad. But we couldn’t find anything that size that was any good, so we kept coming back to Picton Castle. That wasn’t her name then, of course. It had been changed to Dolmar, and we changed it back.

MS: Did you finance that yourself? Where did the funding come from?

DM: It came from a lot of backers who thought this was a cool way of doing it. They liked the idea. No, I couldn’t finance it myself, but there were people interested in marine education who had been involved in other operations… I think what distinguished our operation was that the ship was going to be run from the ship, not the office. Sometimes the tail has wagged the dog, in these operations. Our model was that we were not going to get into superfluous empire-building; we were going to focus on running the ship, and the people who supported us liked that idea.

Some of them, as I said, had been involved with other

operations — I can’t mention names — but they felt burned by the experience. We thought this was a better way. It’s not the only way to run a ship. But it’s worked pretty well.

MS: Why is the barque registered in the Cook Islands?

DM: The simple answer is this: manning. There are no tax or regulatory advantages. Picton Castle meets or exceeds all safety requirements to be a US or Canadian-flagged sail training vessel. If we wanted to place her under the American flag, as a Subchapter R vessel, that would be fairly easy. There would be some minor compliance things, some code things — American wiring, for example, as opposed to British wiring.

But manning is the thing. If we were US-flagged, I could hire only Americans. If we were Canadianflagged, the rules are a bit different, but the end result is essentially the same — I could only hire Canadians. It would difficult to make the voyages we make if I were restricted in that way. It’s a lot easier if I can also hire Danes and Swedes, Germans and West Indians, Poles and so forth.

As it is, I am able to hire crew from all over the world, and that makes manning easier and also makes for a better voyage! We have a nice time on board because of the international flavor of our crew.

MS: Why circumnavigation?

You could do deepwater voyaging without going around and around the world. Is the cache of a circumnavigation part of your marketing strategy?

DM: When we set out to make a few world voyages, that was a question I never heard. They thought that maybe I was nuts, or would never pull it off, but not that it was a marketing plan!

It might be from our success at world voyaging that this question emerges. I do not know.

But why the world voyage?

Well, it’s just about as amazing a voyage as one can imagine. Even today. It is also the voyage we can plan that is closest to the great voyages of old that resulted in producing excellent mariners. It is the

PhD of square-rig sailing. Some might say a Cape Horn rounding is this. Maybe so, but a rounding of the Horn today in a ship like this would be a marketing gambit and of no interest to me. Those sailors of yore who found themselves hauling braces in ice-water up to their chests in the lee scuppers off the Horn? They were dreaming of sailing little barques through the islands of the South Pacific, carrying cargo from island to island and mixing it up with the islanders at each visit!

That seemed a good enough dream for me to pursue; the dream of the seamen that came before me. That is what Picton Castle is about, to a large DANMARK degree. And I get to see my friends in all these islands. Not bad. If I could, I’d do this forever.

What’s a more magnificent voyage than a circumnavigation? I mean, you want to climb mountains, go ahead. But you want to climb Everest?

We’ve done lots of voyages that aren’t circumnavigations. But just by your very question, that’s the one you’re interested in!

MS: That’s what you are best known for.

DM: It’s almost self-answering. Of course, on our shorter voyages, we do the exact same stuff. In fact, the voyage I absolutely love is the Atlantic circumnavigation, where you leave Nova Scotia, go to Europe, Scandinavia, France, Spain, down to Morocco — that’s an amazing trip, too. And the Caribbean, that’s a fantastic voyage. I love that.

But world voyages? I wanted to get people who wanted to do deep-sea voyages, There’s nothing more demonstrably deep-sea than a circumnavigation! And I don’t think I could have done it if I hadn’t done it as a mate all those years ago in Romance. Having sailed around the world once before in a small square-rigged ship, I sort of figured, ‘This can work for us!’ I thought it was amazing. I still think it’s amazing!

In fact, it’s such an amazing thing, it’s kind of hard to talk about. It’s a circumnavigation in the trade winds, a voyage to amazing places that welcome the ship back. It’s an extremely rich experience. It’s not duplicatable; everyone’s world voyage is different.

We want to move on and do other things, but we want to do this voyage with the joy and aplomb that it deserves.

MS: This upcoming world voyage will be your last?

DM: Yes, it will be. It’s got to be. I’m 63. I’ll be 65 when I get back. I’ve been in the sun a long time. I still love it, and that’s a good time to quit, when you still love what you do.

Don’t wait ‘til you hate it. It’s time.

The ship’s going to carry on; we’re going to keep doing what we do. And I’m very much looking forward to this last world voyage. I’m excited about it, excited about sharing what we get out of this. And at this point, I mostly know what’s coming around the corner — I can’t say for certain — but I know what they’re going to get out of it. That’s a powerful thing to say you can deliver.

MS: So you’re preparing for your world voyage. Part of that is the latest iteration of your Bosun School. You don’t just refit the Picton Castle: you get people to come to Lunenburg and pay to do that work with you, and learn the skills necessary to keep a 90-year-old steel barque sailing around the world.

DM: Well, that’s not really what we’re doing. They’re not paying to refit the boat, because we’re not really refitting the boat. They’re learning skills and the skills have a product, but it would actually be easier to do the refitting without them.

Absolutely, we aim to make most of what we teach result in something beneficial to the ship. “The ship comes first.”

But this is primarily is to lend value and impetus to the skill we’re working on. If wire splicing doesn’t lead to making a pendant or a lift, then the student never knows if his or her work is good enough. If the gang is tasked with caulking the decks, then they’d better be good enough at caulking! The only way to be good enough is to do it a lot. The Bosun School gang is drinking deeply of these skills and work ethics, not taking small sips. Nope.

MS: Then does that actually complicate the task of refitting Picton Castle, holding your Bosun School?

DM: Again, we’re not really refitting the Picton Castle.

She sailed in this month, in late August, and we sent down sail. There’s some work going on, but we’re not in shipyard mode — we’re in Bosun School mode.

Our goal with Bosun School is to provide an opportunity for these young mariners to get skills that are critical to being a good mariner, but that are not commonly taught. It’s difficult to learn how to caulk. It’s difficult to learn how to how to do rigging, unless you happen to have been dismast-

ed and you’re working with a guy who knows how to do that stuff!

We concentrate on instruction and repetition, and at the end of the day, on doing something useful so that it’s not fake. So we’re going to make some new rigging, some new wire things here and there. But it would be much easier for us just to make them, rather than have them do it. We could make them in just a few days, or a week.

Wire splicing, we’re going to splice ten wires, practice, practice, practice, so when they leave, they have enough muscle memory.

They can do better than say ‘Oh, I spliced a wire once.’

They can say, ‘I know how to splice wire.’

And then we’re spending two to three hours a day in small boats. This is critical to becoming a decent seafarer.

The process includes instruction, some reading, loads of exercise and practice, more instruction and more practice until it gets too cold.

We have a 23’ pulling boat, a Grenadian sloop, two South Pacific copra/fishing cutters, a sailing dory, a couple wooden semi-dories, a fiber-glass Cape Islander and a small schooner. We have a Tahiti ketch, but I don’t think we are going to be able to refit her this fall. Hopefully in some future session. Small boat mastery is critical to the mariner.

Caulking. We’re not going to caulk six feet; we’re going to caulk 60 feet! And that is a product. So everything we do ends up with something that is the result of what the students learned. And it will be tedious at times. We’re not tasting a cake. We’re making a lot of cakes, and they’re going to know how to make cakes when we’re done.

Instruction, repetition, validation, understanding why this is done, and there’s a fair amount of organizational stuff, too: this is how you get projects done.

We love doing it. And we also do a placement thing. We find out where they want to go, where they’re headed, and we evaluate them and help place them in positions with different ships and yachts and schooners and whatnot. It’s really not about refitting the Picton Castle.

MS: When it comes to placement, what boats are most similar to the Picton Castle?

DM: We’re trying to teach skills that they can use on any vessel. We’re not trying to find the next Picton Castle for them. I don’t even know what boat that would be. So we show them yacht-grade varnish. We don’t do much of it, because Picton Castle doesn’t have a lot of yacht-grade varnish. So we do industrial-grade varnish.

We place young people on all the American sailing ships: Clearwater, Shenandoah, the usual suspects. Stad Amsterdam, Danmark, Staatsraad Lehmkuhl, tugboats, fishing boats, the merchant marine…

ROMANCE we’re not trying to find the next Picton Castle for them. We’re teaching them skills they can apply anywhere.

We do a sailmaking concentration for about two weeks. Doesn’t make them a sailmaker, but it gets their foot in the door. They could get a job in a sail loft as a beginner.

Boatyards, sail lofts... we’ve got people at South Street Seaport and other maritime museums. We’ve had former crew on some of the major rigging projects in the States recently.

MS: Will you continue to be involved with the Picton Castle after the conclusion of this world voyage?

DM: Oh, absolutely! This is my baby. This is my gig.

What I’d like to do is like to expand the Bosun School into a year-round thing — by that I mean nine months.

What I am aiming to do is to compress ten or 15 years of working in old-school boatyards and ships into a few months so these young mariners can carry this forward, and benefit professionally.

Right now it’s a four-month thing, with enough rigging and sailmaking to get you started. We’d like to supplement that with advanced rigging and advanced sailmaking, as well as mate training. By “mate training” I mean the things you don’t get in the schools. The schools provide excellent emergency training. But no schools teach squall management, or weather routing for sailing ships. The things a sailing-ship mate needs to know, there’s no school for that!

For Bosun School to become a year-round operation, there are a few mountains we’ll have to climb, but that’s the goal! b

Dories for

dventure A Apprentices at Lowell’s Boat Shop are building two American-style dories for Gloucester’s flagship Marlinspike: Tell us about the dories you’re building for the 1926 Gloucester fishing schooner Adventure. How did this come about?

Graham McKay: I got to talking with Mary Kay Taylor and Harold Burnham, and actually ran into Mark Webster who runs the CREST [Collaborative for Regional Educational Services and Training] program there in Gloucester — they rebuilt the Watermark.

They were all hoping, as were we, to build dories for Adventure, along the model of the Mystic Seaport whaleboat project. Mystic asked a number of organizations to build whaleboats for the Charles W. Morgan, and those organizations essentially had to raise the money on their

own to do the project. So we as part of our apprentice program are building two dories for Adventure.

It’s worth noting that there are subtleties to dories — even Banks dories. Most of the Banks dories everyone sees nowadays are Lunenburg dories, and the reason is that plans have survived, or at least someone drew a set of plans for Lunenburg dories over the years. That’s what Mystic has, and that’s sort of what everybody has been building, and what has come to be known as the dory.

But our dories, American dories, were all built from patterns and reference sticks and all that sort of stuff. No plan really survives of an American dory. Gardner drew a few, but they were later dories, built for the Coast Guard and for other purposes, and not really true fishing dories.

So just this week I went down to Virginia and took the lines off an original Hiram Lowell dory from 1935, which is what we’re going to replicate for Adventure.

GM: The Lunenburg dories are built on molds and then they have frames put in afterward. They have considerably more rocker, meaning the bottom has more curvature fore and aft. They’re a little more banana-looking than a Lowell dory, which is a little flatter. There are subtleties in the rail construction, the bottom measurements are slightly different, the side angle measurements are slightly different.

Geno’s Dory Shop in Gloucester builds Lunenburg dories; that’s what the international dory racing nuts, that’s what they race. But both these styles were in use traditionally, and they were interchangeable. A lot of fishing schooners would leave Gloucester and go to Nova Scotia and buy dories on the way out to the Banks.

I think it’s important for people to know and appreciate the different styles. I’ve been advocating for [Gloucester Adventure Executive Director] Stefan Edick to have both designs on board and have them side by side. Maybe it’s only something you would notice if you’re deep into it, like I am, but it’s a piece of history that would be lost otherwise.

MS: Can you stack the Lunenburg dories with American-style dories?

GM: Yep. Even here, at the birthplace of the dory — so it’s said — we don’t have any surviving plans. We have some surviving artifacts and notes and such, but they really stopped building fishing dories in the 1940s and 50s, and after that the true fishing-dory design sort of got muddled.

That’s why it was important for me to go down to Virginia

to take the subtleties off the dory down there. And there are subtleties to it that make them stackable, so that’s part of the reason for this project, to record that and to provide Adventure with dories that are true to her era.

MS: So who’s building these dories? Is this your regular apprenticeship program, and you’re just building a different design than you might have otherwise?

GM: Yes. Our program actually does different projects every year. Amesbury skiffs, whaleboats, dories... we’re looking for projects with a purpose. It did start with that whaleboat for Mystic. We built a couple of boats for our own programmatic use, and now dories for Adventure.

We’re always looking to build something that someone needs. It’s just a matter of what makes sense.

LBS Apprentice Programs are tiered according to age, interest, time availability, and prior experience. By participating as apprentices for three or more months, students have the experience of building or repairing traditional wooden boats. Students are rewarded with the rare oppor-

tunity to learn a traditional craft while simultaneously being taught core STEAM concepts as they gain knowledge about maritime and regional history.

BACK to the ARCTIC T. STEWART

By Madalyn Freedman Bowdoin, the official vessel of the state of Maine and the flagship of Maine Maritime Academy, is back in action after a thorough refit. She has a new deck, a rebuilt engine, upgraded systems and more, along with renewed plans for the future.

This summer’s two voyages between Castine, Maine and Lunenburg, Nova Scotia were only the beginning. The ship was designed and built in 1921 to navigate the treacherous waters of the Arctic under the command of Captain Donald MacMillan. Ninety-five years later she is still up to the task, thanks to the hard work of shipwrights, students, and crew.

How does one keep a wooden ship in good health through most of a century, including active service during World War II and nearly 30 trips to the Arctic? This is not the first time that Bowdoin has had such a thorough makeover. The last one took place in the early 1980s, and after more than 30 years it was high time again.

When the 2015 sailing season came to a close after Columbus Day, Maine Maritime students and crew began 16

to disassemble the ship. They removed all of the inessentials, disconnected all plumbing and wiring from the deck, and hired a crane to remove the masts for storage. A much lighter Bowdoin made way for a long, busy winter indoors with Lyman-Morse at Wayfarer Marine in Camden, Maine. She was delivered safely into the skilled hands of Andros Kypragoras, of Kypragoras Shipbuilding, and Project Manager Hannah Gray.

A team from Lyman-Morse then joined the shipwrights in removing the engine, generator, deckhouses, and anchor windlass. These received routine maintenance, or in some cases a total rebuild, and cleared the way for the biggest project: a brand new deck. The clear white pine for the job came from a stand in Vermont that was planted sixteen years before the Bowdoin was built.

The deck is not the only new wood on the boat. The shipwrights replaced Bowdoin’s planking and timbers down to the waterline, with assistance from the students that make up MMA’s Schooner Crew. Hila Shooter, a sophomore in the Vessel Operations and Technology program

and an active member of Schooner Crew, donated much of her free time to the project.

“Working on Bowdoin during her rebuild was a fantastic experience, and I learned so much from working alongside the shipwrights. The crew was very welcoming and happy to involve me in everything from helping hang planks, to drilling holes for trunnels, to wrecking out frames. Being able to be involved with the project, to see how everything was going together and to be a small part of making that happen was extremely rewarding, educational, and very fun.”

It must have been fun; Ms. Shooter even volunteered to clean out the engine room during Thanksgiving vacation.

Simultaneous projects included the reworking of the fuel, exhaust, and freshwater systems. The team completed as much of the interior work as possible before laying the deck, a lengthy process that required real craftsmanship. There followed weeks of caulking, painting, bunging, shaping — everything that goes into making a ship watertight and beautiful. A special crane arrived to install the new generator, the rebuilt engine, the refrigerator units and deckhouses, all without leaving Bowdoin’s winter

shelter.

Details like deck hardware, chain plating, name carving, and electrical system upgrades continued right up until the launch on June 6. All hands celebrated her return to the water after seven months dry, but as Bowdoin began to take up and swell, her shipwrights and students toiled on.

After the launch, a new Captain, Emmaline Hathaway, would take the wheel. Emma signed on in January and had been working with students at the MMA waterfront to prepare for Bowdoin’s return. After a few weeks of painting and prep work, they left the shipyard homeward bound with Captain Hathaway at the helm.

In the captain’s own words, “Bowdoin means a great deal to many people, so it has been an honor to be involved with the rebuild. While working with new friends, as well as old, I have learned a vast amount about the ship and her rich history,” she said.

“This project has been a wonderful and challenging experience, full of growth for both students and crew. I’m looking forward to completing the work and am extremely excited for the opportunity to return Bowdoin to the Arctic.”

Back in Castine, a fresh group of students labored alongside the crew to prepare for the August voyages. They stepped the masts with the aid of a crane, adding a few new coins to the mast step, and threw the rigging together in a dizzying three days, just in time for the stability test. From there it was a matter of installing safety features and completing the upgrades to her systems before the ship could finally sail. The Coast Guard gave their official approval, and Bowdoin was underway once more.

The students who helped to restore Bowdoin, and those who sailed her to Lunenburg and back, came away with a priceless skillset. They learned to work together in a small space, to care for the vessel that would keep them afloat, and to navigate in the traditional manner. The critical thinking required to ensure a safe and successful voyage will prepare these students for future careers as responsible movers and shakers in the maritime world. b Madalyn Freedman, art student turned sailor, sailed on the West Coast of the U.S. and Mexico before coming to MMA to sail as Second Mate on Bowdoin over the summer of 2016.

LIVEandOAK LOTS OF IT

Steve Cross of Iron City, Georgia wants traditional boatbuilders to understand a few things about harvesting live oak Number one, there’s lots of it, mostly in the Deep South.

Number two, despite a common misconception to the contrary, it’s not protected.

Number three, Cross can provide live oak in pretty much any size and quantity for their projects.

Cross, who operates a sawmill in Iron City, Georgia, has spent the last five years trying to spread the word about this valuable resource for traditional boatbuilding and restoration projects. Live oak is an ideal material for the sawn frames of wooden ships. It was extensively used in the early ships of the United States Navy, including USS Constitution. Her “iron sides” were really white oak planking, backed up by tightly-spaced live oak frames.

The importance of live oak to the Navy during the 18th and 19th centuries is probably the source of the mistaken belief that live oak is off-limits. According to the current 2015 United States Forestry Inventory and Analysis, there 20

are over 1 billion Southern Live Oak (Quercus Virginiana) in the United States, and only a tiny fraction are off-limits due to their location in protected habitats. Live oak is neither threatened or endangered, according to the USDA, “and commercial forestry use can be explored.”

Cross is one of the very few people with the desire and the ability to mill live oak, and he is working hard to get the word out. He succeeded in attracting the attention of the San Salvador project at the Maritime Museum of San Diego, where plans to use laminated frames were abandoned in favor of live oak provided by Cross.

“Anyone who thinks history lies buried in the past has never met Steve Cross,” said Museum Director Dr. Ray Ashley. “Steve is thoroughly knowledgeable in his trade, resourceful on every level, and exudes a boundless and personal enthusiasm for the projects he undertakes that makes him a joy to work with.”

Cross ended up providing six tractor-trailer loads of live oak for San Salvador, which was completed this summer and is actively sailing.

While Cross has not yet been successful in persuading the Navy to purchase live oak for the ongoing restoration of USS Constitution, he does have two major clients in the Northeast in the form of Gannon & Benjamin, on Martha’s Vineyard, and Boothbay Harbor Shipyard.

Ross Gannon, who first met Cross at the 2012 Maine Boatbuilder’s Show, said the availability of live oak “came as a surprise to me since I thought no one was still sawing live oak commercially.”

Gannon visited Iron City in 2015, looking for framing stock for the rebuild of a yacht named Mah Jong.

“It was obvious Steve had the material we were looking for, and plenty of it. I must say it’s been a pleasure continuing an historic use of live oak — also known as Maritime Oak — for boat and ship framing, a use for which it is eminently suited.”

Meanwhile, shipwrights in Boothbay are currently remaking the 1894 Gloucester fishing schooner Effie M. Morrissey into an essentially new boat that will go by the name ErnestinaMorrissey.

Boatbuilder Harold Burnham, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation’s liaison on the Ernestina-Morrissey project, also drove down to Iron City to meet Cross. Like Gannon, he came away impressed with what he saw. Not only is Cross supplying live oak for Ernestina-Morrissey’s frames, he came north at Burnham’s invitation to speak at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum about the commercial availability of live oak.

A sample chunk of live oak handed around at the talk was unbelievably dense, fibrous, and heavy, even to those used to working with white oak. Cross spoke enthusiastically about past projects — including one with former President Jimmy Carter — and presented slides showing the abundance of live oak and the substantial sizes in which it can be found.

Privately, Cross also spoke energetically and at length about his correspondence with the Navy. While that appears to be an uphill struggle, EATHER FOR there’s little doubt that Cross and his mill have arrived as a resource for traditional boatbuilders, now and in RADITIONAL ARINE PPLICATIONS the future. b

Small but Salty, Lunenburg Continues to Earn a Living from the Sea

Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, is a town whose time has come — again.

One of the many small eastern ports that once served Canada’s thriving fishing industry, the town fell on hard times just as the fisheries did. But Lunenburg, a mere hour’s drive from Halifax, never gave up the sea. In fact, the town has emerged as a focal point for efforts to preserve Nova Scotia’s maritime heritage. Fittingly, it has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This summer, Lunenburg — the home of the world-circling Picton Castle and the iconic Bluenose; the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic; and a very-much-alive shipbuilding industry — will once gain welcome visiting tall ships as part of the epic Tall Ships Rendez-Vous 2017.

This small but salty town will be a welcome stop for the overworked bosuns of the tall ships fleet.

“One of the main reasons Captain Moreland chose Lunenburg as the place to refit Picton Castle was because of the accumulated wisdom of the shipwrights and other tradespeople and craftspeople who worked on these vessels and many others,” says Maggie Ostler, Chief Operations Officer for the Picton Castle.

“Even today, there is an abundance of marine services, including block maker Arthur Dauphinee, not to mention sail lofts, oar and paddle makers, shipwrights, and boatbuilders.”

There’s also an unusually large selection of places to eat and drink for the size of the town, leading to a growing reputation as a culinary destination. And the drink menu is not limited to Screech (the dark, Jamaica-style rum that’s actually distilled in Newfoundland).

“Ironworks Distillery is especially interesting for sailors because the distillery is located within the old blacksmith’s shop,” hints Ostler.

The Fisheries Flagship Visitors to Lunenburg this August will see Picton Castle, Bluenose II, and a fleet of visiting tall ships, but visitors anytime can see the Theresa E. Connor. The 1938 fishing schooner is the principal exhibit and flagship of the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic.

The last of the saltbank schooners to operate from the port of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Theresa E. Connor represents a way of life for generations of fishermen along the Atlantic coast.

Visitors are encouraged to go aboard the schooner, walk through the areas below deck and spend time in each of the exhibit sections. Retired fishermen bring the days of fishing to life, reminiscing about their adventures on the fishing banks of the Atlantic Ocean.

Theresa E. Connor was launched in 1938 at the Smith and Rhuland Shipyard, the same yard that built Bluenose.

The Dory Shop In business since 1917, the Dory Shop still builds wooden dories. The boats were originally used for fishing, stacked up on deck of the big fishing schooners and launched to catch fish and bring them back to the mothership. Dories are now primarily used for recreational rowing and sailing.

Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic A fantastic collection of artifacts related to fishing, rumrunning and other work at sea. It’s really interactive, with a touch tank filled with sea creatures, a model schooner launch and other hands-on activities.

More than 120 men served on board the vessel, between 1938 and 1966, under the commands of Captain Clarence Knickle, Captain Jack Mills and Captain Harry Oxner.

Theresa E. Connor continued to fish, using double dories, well into the age of modern trawlers. The Lunenburg Marine Museum Society purchased her and opened her to the public in 1967.

As a Museum vessel, Theresa E. Connor has undergone extensive restoration work, with few physical changes to accommodate visitors. The former fish hold is now well-lit and filled with exhibits.

Theresa E. Connor is not alone at the Museum. The schooner is joined by the side trawler Cape Sable, a steelhulled side trawler built in 1962 in Holland. The vessel fished from 1962-1982. Side trawlers like the Cape Sable replaced fishing schooners like the Theresa E. Connor.

Retired fishermen and captains are Heritage Interpreters aboard Cape Sable, sharing stories and experiences with visitors. b

Picton Castle’s land-based skills development program is based in Lunenburg. Happening now, Bosun School students have already learned to tie knots, splice rope and wire, send down yards without a crane, worm, parcel and serve, make ditty bags, seam sails and sail and row small boats. Over the next couple of months, they’ll lay out a sail and make it from start to finish and work on wooden boat repair and construction.

The Big Boat Shed This building is famous as the building site of the original Bluenose, the Bounty, and the HMS Rose as well as a number of wooden fishing vessels. The most recent vessel built and launched here is the Mahayana, flagship of the Blue Dream Project.

The Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic features two fishing vessels — the 1938 wooden schooner THERESA E. CONNOR and the 1962 side trawler CAPE SABLE — whose careers span nearly five decades of the fisheries.

FRIENDS GOOD WILL is a replica operated by the Michigan Maritime Museum in South Haven, MI. The original FRIENDS GOOD WILL was built in Michigan at River Rouge in 1810 as a merchant vessel. In the summer of 1812, she was chartered by the federal government to take military supplies to Fort Dearborn, at what is now Chicago.

She was returning with furs and skins when she was lured into the harbor of Mackinac Island. The British, having taken the island just days before, were flying false colors above the fort ramparts.

The British confiscated the vessel, renaming her LITTLE BELT. She was armed and fought with the Royal Navy until September of 1813, when she was recaptured at the Battle of Lake Erie.

The sloop in Commodore Perry’s famous dispatch, “We have met the enemy and they are ours: Two ships, two brigs, one schooner and one sloop” was FRIENDS GOOD WILL. FRIENDS GOOD WILL then served in the US Navy, transporting troops across Lake Erie. She was driven ashore in a storm south of Buffalo in December 1813. In January 1814, she was burned during the British raid on Buffalo.

Our current plan is to relocate the vessel from its present location in San Diego to our yard and newly-acquired boat shop facility in San Pedro (that’s a wonderful development we’ll update you on in the future). We plan to complete the work on Swift there, as it’ll be a great means of learning as well as community building.

The boss likes to call the facility our “exposition shipyard,” and has visions of a bustling workspace that draws folks with all sorts of skill sets and interests.

VIRGINIA From Allison Hepler at Maine’s First Ship: “We continue to dub away on the Virginia. We’ve onethird planked her. The volunteers have worked out the bugs on planking a full bow and trunneling, and they’re getting ready to start on the bottom. We dream of deck framing, for which we received a grant.

“We had our third annual Women’s Shipbuilding Day recently as a way of recruiting more women volunteers to the project. With the much-valued assistance of Isabella Pierson, the women volunteers steamed and hung two planks. We’ve also been helped recently by crew members of a Bath Iron Works-built ship, Michael Monsoor.

“We are still working on Wednesdays and Saturdays and plan on launching in two years. Two years from when? Well, that’s to be determined! All are welcome to join the cooks, EMTs, gardeners, sign painters and computer nerds helping to recreate Virginia!”

H The Bayfront Maritime’s representation of Erie’s historic Schooner Porcupine is coming right along. Currently the interior is taking shape.

This project began with the generous donation of a 40’ fiberglass hull by an Ohio couple, Keith and Kathy Palmerton, whose dreams of retiring aboard and cruising the 28

world were thwarted by health challenges. The Palmertons donated the hull, an 85-hp diesel, and other equipment.

Porcupine’s mission will be sailing as the Schoolship for Presque Isle Bay, a hands-on sailing STEM classroom and historic regional attraction, interpreting her roles in the War of 1812, sailing for the US Coastal Survey Office, being a United States Revenue Cutter, and carrying cargo.

H Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum Boatyard Program Manager Jenn Kuhn reports work continues on the 25’ draketail Pintail, with an anticipated spring launch.

Construction began mid-January 2016 through CBMM’s Apprentice for a Day public boatbuilding program. Pintail’s hull has been completed with the deck beams and the floors installed. She will be fitted with an area in her forepeak for storing gear, and participants have decided there will be no cuddy cabin due to the narrowness of her beam.

Some of the work to be completed throughout the winter includes building the engine box, the floorboards, installing the rudder, the stuffing box, the decks and coaming, the steering gear, the gunwales and spray rails, the duck walk — the area along the waterline around her round stern — and building the forward and aft seating areas.

H Mayflower II returned to Mystic Seaport in early November and is undergoing an extensive restoration with an eye toward sailing actively in 2020, the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims’ arrival in Massachusetts Bay. Mayflower is going to be away from Plymouth Harbor for an extended period starting this fall, as the boatwrights at Mystic Seaport fabricate a structure to support the ship and preserve its shape so under-the-waterline planks, frames, inner keelson and bilge stringers can be replaced.

Plimoth Plantation is actively seeking a vessel to serve as a stand-in for some or all of the time that Mayflower is away, particularly for the summer seasons of 2017 and 2018. If you have any ideas, you’re encouraged to e-mail Whit Perry at wperry@plimoth.org.

H Progress continues on Matthew Turner, with the goal of launching on March 25.

Setting a date “is a good wake-up call on what needs to be done and how to refine the project management plan to meet our objective,” writes Project Director Alan Olson.

“It becomes clear we must work on many fronts at once, keeping the flow of materials and talent to coordinate and meet deadlines. To that end we have been fortunate that volunteer talent somehow shows up when we need it.

Materials are a challenge at times, needing serious capital spending months in advance to get them in the pipeline to arrive when needed. At the moment, we are on track.

“One exciting milestone is all the hybrid propulsion equipment has arrived and is being installed with the help of BAE Hybrid Systems,

our supplier. Matthew Turner will feature the first regenerative serial hybrid system installed in a tall ship or any large sailing ship.”

H The replacement of the Star of India’s weather decks is expected to be completed by late winter.

The project incorporates a composite deck with two layers of plywood, epoxy, and fiberglass underneath a surface layer of fir planking of traditional width and butt spacing.

The bottom side of the lower layer of plywood is routed to simulate the underside of planking, so that there is little visual difference between the new deck and a traditional planked deck.

This system was chosen to protect the internal iron work of the ship from the ingress of rainwater and thus far, it is reported to be watertight. While this is not a traditional deck, it does protect the original, irreplaceable 1863 ironwork far better than the traditional deck was able to do.

The National Historic Landmark schooner Adventure marked her 90th year in fine fashion. Beginning with a spectacular 1920sthemed gala birthday party in May and concluding with a re-creation of her 1926 Commissioning Day photograph, Adventure celebrated her anniversary with a busy sailing season.

“After many years alongside in restoration, the sight of Adventure under sail is now becoming a regular feature in Gloucester Harbor and beyond,” said Captain Stefan Edick. “We hear regularly just how much it means to the community to see her under sail once more, and their support has been extraordinary.”

Highlights from 2016 included a growing education program for students ranging from Cape Ann to Boston, appearances at the Boston Seafood Festival and the Salem Maritime Festival, a concert series for singer songwriters, and a regular slate of sails for the community. Notable among the latter were sails for the descendants of schooner fishermen and their families, honoring their contributions to Gloucester’s history.

September brought the Gloucester Schooner Festival, and lively conditions for the annual Mayor’s Race, where Adventure won the Esperanto Cup for the first time since 1991. Later in the month the vessel sailed to Martha’s Vineyard to participate in the 28th annual Pat West Schooner and Gaff Rig Festival, and welcomed aboard local elementary school students.

Plans for the coming months include the final stages of restoration for the vessel’s aft cabin, planning for an expanded slate of educational programing in conjunction with Maritime Gloucester and other local partners, and preparations for Tall Ships Boston 2017. In support of Adventure’s educational programming, new dories are being built for the vessel by students and apprentices at Lowell’s Dory Shop and the Essex Shipbuilding Museum.

With the help of a local benefactor, they have obtained the use of a piece of land on the country’s Pacific coast, where their planned vessel, Ceiba, will be constructed. The next step is to raise the much larger sum of money they’ll need to actually start building. They hope to lay the keel next summer.

Meanwhile, Lynx Guimond of SailCargo is already in Costa Rica, locating wood for the project.

“There are literally hundreds upon hundreds of species of wood here, many of which can be suitable for this project,” said Guimond, a native of Quebec, via Skype.

“As of now we have not yet finalized the wood sourcing, but we hope to use a lot of plantation lumber, such as teak and pochote, for the hull and decking. We are using plantation wood because we want a minimal impact on the environment.

“We have already been given some wind-fallen hardwoods, such as ocotea, mahogany and guayabon. A local NGO we’re working with helps to source natural materials in an ethical and sustainable fashion. We’re going to use a very dense, heavy hardwood for the keel, keelson riders and stem/stern construction.”

Ceiba’s design, by Manta Marine, is based on the Finnish trading schooner Ingrid, which was launched in 1907.

Asked why they’re building a new vessel rather than purchasing an existing hull, Guignon cites his Tres Hombres experience. That initiative was launched using an existing vessel, but according to Guignon, it has not proven to be as cost-efficient as expected.

This will be the sail training ship’s seventh global circumnavigation. Trainee berths will be open to men and women ages 18+ of all nationalities. No sailing experience is required.

The Picton Castle is scheduled to cruise the Caribbean this winter and then will participate in the Rendezvous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta, organized in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Canada’s confederation, during the summer months.

The Dinghy Dock is located in Oyster Pond, just over the line in French St. Martin. Oyster Pond has a rather tricky entrance on the windward side of the island, but a dogleg right puts you in the shelter of a high hill and the “Pond” itself is calm and well protected.

The Moorings has a base here, and the bar is often full of people beginning or ending charters, waiting for their boat to be ready, waiting for a departure briefing, or waiting for a taxi to take them across the island to the airport. For some the Dinghy Dock offers the first taste of the adventure that awaits; for others, the last outdoor drinking opportunity they’ll have for months and months.

I am pretty sure the “100 varieties” noted on the sign is mere hyperbole. But it’s still a fine place, especially when outward bound. There is nothing quite like that feeling of beginning a new cruise, whether it’s a week, a month, or a year that lies ahead of you. — MR

Matthew McDaniel of Salem, Oregon has completed the purchase of the 63’ steel ketch Iron Eagle. The George Sutton design is currently in Portland, where it will be fitted with a new aluminum main mast and have a few other repairs made to it before heading to Newport, Oregon. McDaniels describes Iron Eagle as “a solid design” powered by a 6-71 Detroit Diesel.

Forty-one years ago, in 1975, W. David Kingery was interested in doing a single-handed race from England to Newport. To qualify for the race, David chose to do a singlehanded voyage to Bermuda and on this trip was struck with the concept of organizing a race to Bermuda for cruising yachts and family sailors.

The first race in 1977 saw 104 starters cross the line.

Over the 40 years since then, the race has evolved into a true offshore challenge for cruising yachts, amateur, family and youth sailors. Such tasks may include: sanding, painting, varnishing, cleaning, organizing, moving wood, shoveling snow, breaking ice, and various small carpentry projects. The winter crew should be ready to work long hours outside in the cold. Living space at a crew apartment and a limited food budget are included. There is no cook hired for the winter, so the maintenance coordinator and crew decide together whether to have shared or individual meals with the allotted funds.

SPRING SAILING CREW Sloop Clearwater Clearwater is currently accepting applications for all deck positions (1st Mate, 2nd Mate, Cook, Engineer, Bosun, Deckhand, and Educator/Deckhands) for the spring 2017 season (April-June). You will be delivering Clearwater’s education program to 4th-12th graders as well as occasional programs for adults. Applicants should have strong communication skills, an active interest in education and an ability to work/live in a close knit community. Crew members work a 5-day-on, 2-day-off schedule.

Raise the main first?

Do you always raise the main first?

Captain Stefan Edick tells the story of a fella who walks up to the boat in Gloucester and asks “do you always raise the main first?” And then goes on to explain that in the old days they never set the main first, preferring to get out of the harbor under fore and staysail before putting the big one up.

The story reminds me that there was a time when I always raised the mainsail first, especially when I was younger and sailing mostly sloops. Times have changed. These days I am just as likely follow the words of the old schoonerman and get out of the harbor before setting the big one. This is especially true running Brilliant, where we have a smaller crew and often a new green group on board. The real answer is “It depends on what you are trying to do.”

We try to sail Brilliant as traditionally as possible and do as much maneuvering under sail instead of engine as possible. This not only keeps the skills alive, but we are trying to keep nine teenagers active, and given the boats that I have run over the years, you don’t always have a working engine. Brilliant is easier to anchor under sail anyway.

Anchoring under sail can be pretty straightforward, especially if you plan ahead and practice in a large open harbor. You sail in, come head to wind, get your head sails off, sheet in your main to act like a wind vane, and while the crew scrambles around clearing the foredeck, you wait for some sternway and let go the anchor before you get going too fast. Having the anchor fetch up with two knots of sternway will set the anchor well, but the boat might not be connected to it afterwards.

Preparation is the key to success here; we often take in the fore and staysail while sailing in to reduce the speed and variables while keeping a balanced sail plan. It also helps to have the anchor swung and ready to drop. You actually have a time to get things cleaned up while the boat slows down and begins to back before letting go the anchor. This is especially true with Brilliant, who likes to speed up to nine knots as you make your approach into that cute little harbor.

Going from nine knots ahead to slow astern gives you plenty of time to make sure you’re where you want to be.

Sailing off the anchor can be a little different. After too many times praying for the boat to fall off while dumping

the mainsheet and crying for the crew to “get the jib on her so we can steer” I started thinking about where I was going before setting sail.

Upwind, sure, set the main, you’ll need the drive and can luff to control speed. Reaching, well how fast do you want to go? In moderate or heavy winds we will often set a foresail luffing, heave back the anchor and set a staysail or jib, back winding the sail to send her off on the desired tack. Downwind, the mainsail can be a liability. Having to organize a gybe while stowing the anchor, clearing the foredeck of what ever came up on the anchor, and reminding the crew to wind the rope clockwise around the turny thing can be a little stressful. Why bother? Soon you’ll be clear of the harbor and then you can set them all.

One of the joys of the schooner rig is the many sail plans you can set for the various winds, desired courses and crew experience. A reefed main, fore, staysail and small jib are great for going to windward in a fresh breeze. Take in the jib if the wind builds or take the fore if you don’t want to send someone out on the widow maker. Running or reaching in a blow is amazingly comfortable under fore and staysail. No one has to leave the cockpit to tend sail and without the main set, steering is easy in spite of the following seas. In light winds you can set all kinds of cool stuff. Upwind with the fisherman and a #2 jib keeps Brilliant moving well. Falling off to a reach allows us to use the big jib and even the gollywobbler, which replaces the fisherman and the foresail and weighs about three ounces. It also leaves wisps of thread all over the place.

Last but not least is the drifter, a reaching spinnaker that will fill in a teacup of wind. That is a lot of options! Some better suited to more experienced crew, some easy and bullet-proof. Obviously, every boat and crew is different. What we do on Brilliant might not work on the Harvey Gamage.

But by trying different things we continue to learn new and cool stuff that our boats will do and of course the stuff that didn’t work out to well.
