Letter from the Editor his is the year during which we shall learn how to work around a seriously annoying virus. We have to carry on as normally as possible and we must strive towards maintaining our way of living, because threats of hunger in African countries are hanging over our heads. But ignoring the virus can be fatal.

Covid-19 puts us in a catch-22 situation. We must reduce our economic activities to save ourselves, but we must carry on with our economic activities to stay alive. This virus is not going away, or at least not until the recently developed vaccines will reach Zambia.

We also must consider that this virus might develop a new strain which will have a similar impact on Africa that it has on European countries.

Besides the obvious changes in conduct, like wearing masks, not shaking hands and social distancing, there will be more serious adaptations we as farmers have to make. Our lives will have to evolve faster than Covid-19.

Let us start with the mitigation of inputs like imported seed, fertiliser, plant, and animal health products. We shall be last in the row when our foreign suppliers down-scale their production. Also, a reduction in supply always leads to a hike in prices. Prices will become simply too high for Zambian farmers. This will force us to develop local products, which also poses many opportunities.

We must re-think the crops we will plant in future. Locally consumed crops might be safer than those for the export market. Our borders will be closed and exported goods might be too difficult to sell to be profitable.

We need to eat healthier. Less sugar means less chances of diabetes and heart-related diseases. Due to the high sugar content in the diets of Western nations, they are more prone to be affected by Covid-19.

Calf growth:

the influence of odorants and taste buds

ecently, animal nutritionists have been busy acquiring new information on farm animals’ senses of smell and taste. Whether it is chickens, pigs, goats, or cows, we know very little about the way in which their smell systems work. Although numerous studies of olfaction indicate the importance of smell to the animal, we tend to neglect this matter when we formulate feed as our aim is always to achieve higher yields. The immediate effect of that aim is more readily measurable, but our time should rather be spent on the animals’ chemosensory systems.

For ruminants, taste and smell are separate senses with their own receptor organs. However, they are intimately entwined. Taste-provoking chemical molecules called tastants are detected by the animal’s taste buds, which consist of special sensory cells. When stimulated, these cells send signals to specific areas of the brain, which makes the animal conscious of the perception of taste. Similarly, specialised cells in the nose pick up odorants, which stimulate receptor proteins that initiate a neural response. Ultimately, messages about taste and smell converge, causing the animal to detect the flavours of food.

According to Professor Ivan Manzini, from the Institute of Animal Science at Germany’s Giessen University, olfactory receptors in mammals represent three percent of its entire genome – the largest family of g-protein coupled recep-

tors in the genome. This indicates the importance of olfactory receptors in animals, particularly when considering the feeding of younger animals.

Calves rely on their senses of smell and taste to evaluate the desirability of feed. Feed having an unpleasant taste or smell can result in lower levels of feed intake, which eventually affects the return on investment in the farm.

The best way to improve the smell and taste of feed is to make use of feed flavours. Calf feed then becomes more palatable to them, its digestion is indirectly increased, and better feed efficiency is the result.

In dairy nutrition, the adding of feed flavours has been widely accepted for two reasons.

Calves respond better to feed with feed flavours. Calves have approximately 25 000 taste buds situated on the dorsal surface of the tongue, in the pharynx, and in the larynx. Compare this to humans (9 000 taste buds) and chickens (24 taste buds) and it becomes clear that calves need special attention.

Feed tends to stay longer in the mouths of calves than other species, which will certainly favour the inclusion of feed flavours. Better feed intake and performance will be achieved.

‘Promoting’ raw materials When calves are fed on silage-based diets it might be essential to include flavours, as doing so will mask the ef-

fects of alcohols formed in the silage during the fermentation process. The palatability of these types of silage is heavily affected when they contain high levels of moisture and are not left to dry before being piled. Flavours will also play an important role when coarselychopped straw or grass is fed, as calves usually avoid these types of raw materials. Adding flavours will help to ‘promote’ feeds and a gradual increase in consumption will be observed.

Growth performance of calves In a study published in the Journal of Dairy Science, calves fed flavoured feed consumed more than calves fed unflavoured feed. The researchers added flavours to milk and to a calf starter feed to determine if young calves could be encouraged to eat dry feed by association of the starter feed and the milk.

Twenty-four calves received flavoured milk containing butterscotch, ethyl butyrate, and maple flavours. Twelve of the calves were fed a normal pelleted starter feed. The other twelve were fed the same starter feed, but with the addition of the same flavouring products added to the milk. After two weeks, the calves fed the flavoured starter feed began to consume more pellets than those consuming starter feed without any added flavours. This resulted in significantly higher weight gains for the calves fed on the flavoured feed, compared to the calves fed on unflavoured feed.

It is therefore essential to stimulate intake in dairy calves to achieve optimal growth. As indicated by the study above and the information in literature, it is clear that calf pellets should contain quality flavourants.

A

ll pigs, from the smallest piglet to the oldest pig, can rest assured that they will reach full potential when their owner feeds them with the Tiger Feeds Pig range.

Pigs are sensitive animals with a high risk of contracting diseases. You can enhance their performance and reduce losses by providing them with the best feed available. Tiger Feeds focuses on six different formulas – each one carefully developed for a specific stage or need. This month we shall look at the first three mixes.

The Sow and Boar mix is supplied in a meal format, and is classified as a pig breeder diet. It is specially formulated to address the specific needs of the pregnant sow, boar, and gilt. A strict feeding programme should be followed.

The recommended levels may, however, be adjusted depending on the body condition of individual animals.

Feeding recommendations of the Sow and Boar mix: • Dry sow: Feed directly after service, a restricted diet of 2,2 kg per day. At four weeks prior to farrowing, increase to 2,5 kg per day.

• Boar: Feed a restricted diet of 2,2 kg per day.

• Gilts: Feed a restricted diet of 2,5 kg per day four weeks prior to service.

A working boar has specific nutritional needs and Tiger Feeds can supply that.

Feeding recommendations Pre weaning: Feed from 7 days of age to one week post weaning. (Feed ad libitum in small quantities as often as possible.)

A lactating sow needs extra and specific nutrients to produce enough milk for her piglets.

Milking machine systems efficiency and milking robots T

he most important aspect concerning the efficient functioning of milking machine systems is vacuum stability. It is associated with positive milk removal from the udder with minimum irritation for the cow. Factors that play an important role are: Presence of milk bottles The presence of a milk bottle creates a vacuum reserve that suppresses vacuum fluctuations and therefore reduces udder damage and mastitis.

Position of weighing bottles It is important that the bottle is as close as possible to the cow’s udder, and as close possible to the same level.

Obstructions in the milk-flow path Any obstruction such as joints in milk 10

tubes, must be avoided. It causes turbulence and the milk becomes rancid.

Pipeline height and length The milk tube must be as short as possible, have as few turns as possible and may not rise vertically while it is under a vacuum. The milking parlour must therefore be on a higher level than the milk room. After the milk is separated, that is at atmospheric pressure, it may be pumped to a cooling unit.

Norms, sequence sizes and requirements in the planning of a milking machine system Vacuum provision • The vacuum pump size must

deliver a minimum of 100 m3/min free air per milking unit, therefore a 4-point tandem system must be 400 m3/min.

100 m3/ min free air gives 200 m3/ min expelled air.

The airflow capacity of a vacuum pump drops with 4% for each 300 m rise above sea level.

A maximum of eight elbows in the vacuum line between the vacuum pump and first milking point must be allowed.

There must be zero constrictions in a vacuum line between the vacuum pump and the first milking point.

The reserve airflow must be 40% of the pump capacity or higher.

The restoration time must be less than four seconds.

• The vacuum level during wash action can be higher than 50 kPa. • The vacuum meter reading must correlate with the vacuum level that prevails right above the measuring beaker or flow meter.

Pulsation • Pulse tempo: 50 to 60 (pulse tempos between pulsators in the ProAgri Zambia 59

Milk tube • Milk tubes must be as straight and short as possible.

• Elbows in a horizontal level must be limited as far as possible.

• Subsiding pieces must be avoided as far as possible.

• Rising pieces must be eliminated at all cost.

• The grade of the milk tube must be even and inclined in the direction of the milk jar (1:60 to 1:100).

• For better wash action, the milk tube must be installed lower than the measuring flask.

• The milk conveyor tube must join in the top third of the milk tube.

• The milk tube diameter must be large enough to prevent overflowing, but small enough to ensure effective wash action.

• No air may be sucked in after the milk, for instance, when a measuring flask is being emptied.

Milk vacuum stability • The milk vacuum variance may not exceed the norm of 10 kPa. • Requirements for a good milk vacuum stability: - Large enough vacuum pump for sufficient reserve air flow.

- A low installed measuring flask, flow meter or pipeline.

- Short milk tubes (shorter than 1,5 m).

- No flow limitations in milk tubes.

- Open air bleeding openings in the claw pieces.

- An equal milk tube inclined in the direction of the milk jar.

- No air leakage may occur in any part of the milking unit or measuring flask.

Milking robots Milking robots improve the lifestyle of the producer, as well as that of the cow (Mottram & Cooper, 1999). After years of uncertainty and scepticism, dairy farmers worldwide are considering milking robots as replacements for labourers. It seems that initial errors with the milking robots have been solved with improved technology that results in more dependable systems.

The milking parlour in which the robot is used, consists of three parts.

In the first part, cows are fed after being milked. From there they move to the second part to rest. A one-way gate prevents them from returning to the feeding troughs. They are therefore forced to move to the third part, namely the milking robot, when they are hungry (Van Rooyen, 1998).

A computer controls movement between the resting area, the parlour, and the feeding area by using automatic identification and automatic drafting gates. A cow cannot move from the resting area to the feeding area without going through 11

after that is clean and goes to the storage tank.

When the cow has been milked, her teats are sprayed with a disinfectant before she leaves the crate. As soon as all the teat heads are removed, the arm moves away from the cow and each teat head is then washed with a sprayer unit. Cross-infection between cows is prevented this way.

All milking equipment are standard.

The only addition to a robot system is the robot-arm.

The manufacturers recommend that four crates are installed, served by one robot. The robot moves on rails by itself from one crate to another to milk the cows. The most important benefit of this type of system is the saving in labour costs.

Automated milking does however not only show a saving in labour costs, but building costs are lower because of the smaller feeding and holding area. Over and above the labour costs, the running costs of the milking equipment at automated and conventional systems must be compared and, more important, the actual cost of milking must be considered.

Often, the conventional milking process will be more expensive.

A further benefit of automated milking systems is that cows can be milked 24 hours a day. Because cows can be milked more times per day (up to four times), it results in an increase in milk yields of 15%. According to Murray (1999), there are exciting times ahead for automated milking systems, as they are a viable alternative to conventional systems.

If that happens, her entry is blocked, and she remains in the resting area. Cows leaving the milking robot are drafted to the feeding area by another automatic drafting gate, which is also used for drafting sick cows or cows that must be examined (Field, 1999).

The milking process begins when the cow enters the parlour. A computer identifies the cow by means of an electronic identification disc worn by the cow and determines whether the cow should be milked. If needed, the cow enters the milking crate where a computerised feeding station makes a certain amount of fodder available to the cow.

The cow’s udder and teats are now 12

washed by a washing device mounted on a metal arm on rollers. When the udder is washed, the metal arm retracts, after which the positions of the teats are determined by a laser device. The laser device communicates with the arm containing the teat heads which allows the arm to couple the teat heads with the teats at exactly the correct position.

Each teat is milked separately. As soon as one quarter of a teat is milked, that teat head is disconnected. The other teat heads keep milking the cow until all four quarters are milked out.

Better udder health is obtained this way. The first bit of milk from the teat is prevented from entering the storage tank by an automatic valve in the milk line. Milk that comes from the udder

Valley makes irrigation affordable to Zambian farmers

I

rrigation is the most effective investment that a farmer can make to ensure growth on his farm and in his business. However, this is not a cheap investment and many farmers feel that they simply cannot afford to install large irrigation systems on their farms.

Good news for those farmers is that Valley has the solution to make an irrigation investment on your farm more affordable.

Reinke Irrigation:

The pivot that makes crops and farmers grow

hen choosing an irrigation system for his farm, the farmer should consider: • The most efficient, cost-effective design, • The quality of the components such as pumps and gearboxes • The overall cost per hectare • The availability and quality of after sales service This is according to Graeme Flower, Managing Director of Lomag Agri in Zimbabwe.

It is for these reasons that more and more farmers all over Zimbabwe choose Reinke centre pivots for their farms. One such a farmer is Gary Parham who is in charge of crop production at Inamo Agri farms near Harare. The Reinke pivots are used to irrigate wheat, soya beans, maize, peas, potatoes, and tobacco. Inamo Agri is the proud owner of 27 Reinke pivots ranging from 10 to 35 hectares in size.

“Reinke pivots provide excellent value for money,” says Gary. “The systems pay for themselves by increasing the turnover of your farm. Depending on type of crops you plant and

Delivery time from the Reinke warehouse in Durban to Harare takes about a week. Lomag Irrigation keeps enough stock in Zimbabwe to erect six pivots. “We have enough stock to assist any farmer, and ordering from Reinke’s warehouse in Durban is not a problem,” says Graeme.

There has been a rapid growth in the demand for centre pivots in Zimbabwe.

This is a good indicator that agriculture in Zimbabwe is growing. “Our bestselling product is the 2065 model, and this year we introduced the 2045 which is more cost effective on 25 hectares and smaller areas. We have also recently received stock on the enginepowered mini pivots from Reinke. The most popular sizes are between 20 and 30 hectare pivots,” says Graeme.

Work deeper and wider with Agrico's new T1000 folding ripper

A

ny implement must prove itself before the Versters of Potlachi Family Trust would acquire it. Therefore, every implement under consideration is thoroughly tested on their farm near Luckhoff, in the central part of South Africa. They ensure that only the best equipment is bought to support their drive towards achieving the best yields possible.

The Versters farm with maize, wheat, popcorn, alfalfa, peas, and soya beans under irrigation. They need a strong, reliable, and efficient ripper to prepare the soil thoroughly and quickly before planting.

After a demonstration on their farm last year, where they tested a wide range of Agrico's implements, they decided to buy a new T1000 folding wing ripper. This is one of the largest rippers in the Agrico T1000 series. The Versters use a 430 kW tractor with the implement. The T1000 is available in various models from 1 to 21 tines, with frames up to 10 metres wide.

"Agrico's people understand farming and give the farmer exactly what he needs,” says Ryno Verster: “They adapted the ripper especially for our farm, for example, they fitted the implement with specific wheels, as per our specification. Agrico also, on request, mounted the tines 420 mm apart. The standard spacing is 500 mm.

“The T1000 can work up to 630 mm deep, but on average we rip the soil 500 mm deep,” says Ryno. According to Agrico, the ideal working depth is between 400 and 630 mm, depending on conditions and the cultivation methods. Within this working range, the operation is very efficient and the tines are still able to completely break away and reset automatically.

Ryno says Agrico's ripper stands out above the competition, because the frame and tines are manufactured from high strength materials and are designed to last longer. Yet, Agrico offers much better value for money than their competitors.

Since this particular Agrico T1000 was adapted according to the Versters' needs, there were minor teething problems with the rocker shaft and welding on a hinge. “Agrico offered to give me a brand-new frame, but I said

This ensures a longer life. they could just reinforce it, which they did at the hinge point. The rocker shaft, they replaced with an upgraded one,” says Ryno. "That being said, up to now we had no issues and didn’t even have to replace one bolt on a shear after 500 hectares of deep ripping with the implement.” He is also impressed with the fact that the implement can cultivate 6,3 hectares per hour. "Its method of cultivating is very efficient and the breakaway action is outstanding.”

Ryno is very satisfied with Agrico’s after sales service, which is a major consideration with the purchase of any equipment. "They always help me when I experience any problems. I will definitely buy more Agrico implements."

Ryno's father, Francois, added.

“Agrico went to great lengths to give us exactly what we wanted. The ripper is designed to be a part of our farming solution, and it is better than any imported alternative."

Paul Burger, Engineer and Product Manager of Agrico, explains that this T1000 is designed with a folding frame to facilitate easy transport, while

offering a wide working width. He explains why the T1000 is an exceptional implement: “Bigger tines give the farmer more tillage options and allow for either deep, or slightly shallower cultivation in harder soil. The taller tines result in more clearance between the ground and the frame.

The tine design and -layout is also optimal with less obstructions. When working with more residual material on the field, there is better stubble flow and reduced clogging of the implement, compared to other designs.

"Agrico’s T-series is also successful because of lower draft resistance than the competitors, thanks to the optimised breakaway action, -tine width, -tine shape and -shear angle.

The standard 80 mm shear has a more aggressive action than those of its competitors. A wide range of alternative shears is also available.”

Benefits of the T1000-reset ripper: • The implement does its job with little effort because tines automatically reset during operation, without having to reduce speed or lifting the implement.

• Reduced wear on tines.

Land preparation for flood irrigation

A

ll flood irrigation systems require intensive and accurate preparation of the land prior to planting. Accurate levelling of the fields is essential. On larger basin and flood irrigation systems, this can only be achieved using a laser-controlled levelling apparatus.

This type of land treatment is expensive and generally not available to remotely situated small-scale farmers.

The levelling of flood basins and short furrows can be achieved by the farmer with normal farming implements. Training and education are, however, important. An efficient flood irrigation scheme can provide water more efficiently than alternative systems, such as a sprinkler system. A poorly managed flood irrigation scheme wastes considerable quantities of water. If irrigation application is inefficient, reduced yields can be expected.

For short furrow irrigation, the level furrows can easily be set out using simple equipment such as a hose and water to align the furrows.

The furrow bed can also be levelled by filling it with water and removing humps and bumps by hand as the water slowly seeps into the soil. More extensive land levelling is needed for other types of flood irrigation.

For short furrow and similar systems, it is significantly easier to manage irrigation by using fixed applications.

(The same depth of irrigation water is applied with each application.) Scheduling is simplified and one of the following models should be used to control irrigation: Both the time lapse between irrigations at a point, and the application 20

Once a level base has been established, even applications of water can be applied by placing a brick or similar object in the furrow bed to act as a filling guide.

Each time that a certain quantity of water has been used and the soil has dried out to a certain measurable

extent, water is applied to bring the soil water back to the field capacity.

On smaller systems, furrows and border irrigation can be set out using profile boards to establish levels.

On larger commercial farming systems, expensive laser levelling in conjunction with large machinery will be more common.

Correct zinc deficiency in pecan nut trees with soil banding P

ecan nut trees are heavy users of zinc (Zn). It is an essential nutrient for good growth and nut production.

However, zinc deficiency is quite a common problem in commercial pecan nut orchards, especially those established on sandy, well-drained, acidic soils, and on soils from phosphatic rocks. In other words, the soil pH is important in determining the availability of zinc in pecan trees. In acidic soils of a pH less than six, zinc treatment is essential.

Zinc is commonly applied by means of a foliar spray. Although multiple annual foliar spray applications, up to six per season, are effective and potentially a rapid method for correction of Zn-deficient foliage, it is expensive.

Efficacy also depends on complete canopy coverage and repetitive application, as the foliar canopy expands during spring. Also, foliar sprays probably do not result in sufficient mobilisation and transport of endogenous zinc to alleviate deficiency in the non-foliage tree organs such as the roots. There is evidence that the zinc needs of pecan trees might be best satisfied through root uptake.

Zinc can also be applied once in several years in a dry form by broadcasting it underneath the trees, or placed in trenches, but correction by soil application is also expensive and usually impractical or not effective.

Trunk implants or injections are also possibilities.

There is a need for a more effective, economical, and long-lasting method for satisfying Zn needs. The US Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, South-eastern Fruit and Tree Nut Research Laboratory did some extensive research on a better methods to solve this problem.

The research was conducted over four years on trees growing in acidic soil, which exhibited moderate Zndeficiency symptoms. The trees were entering their fourth growing season.

Foliar application of zinc is the norm, but extensive research proves that there is a better method to pursue.

Another conventional method of applying zinc to pecan trees is by dissolving it into the irrigation water.

Image: Hardus du Toit Two parallel, underground drip irrigation lines were spaced 1,2 metres on either side of the tree trunks with the emitters raised above the soil level, one metre apart. Soluble zinc sulphate (ZnSO4.7H2O) or zinc oxide (ZnO) were applied under each experimental tree in a band of 10 cm by 4 metres, exactly over the drip lines. Different quantities of the nutrients were supplied to the different trees to find the perfect application.

The dry weight of zinc in the leaves was measured to determine the outcome, and the results were significant. 50 milligram per gram dry weight of zinc in the leaves are needed for optimal tree functionality. This was obtained even four years after the application. Rates of Zn at 264 to 1 056 g per tree are efficacious and, as a bonus, increasing amounts of Zn also increased the foliar Mn concentration, and did not affect foliar concentration of other key micronutrients such as Fe, Co, Cu, or Ni.

Previous experiments proved that band placement methods were inferior to broadcasting, but this method hit the sweet spot. This fertilisation strategy offers an efficacious alternative to annual foliar Zn sprays for orchards established on acidic soils, and provides a means of ensuring rapid and long-term Zn absorption through soil application.

It appears that under moist soil situations, the zinc needs of the tree will be satisfied for at least four years, and potentially for several years thereafter, as applied zinc moves deeper into the soil profile with passage of time and more feeder roots penetrate the Zn-enriched zone.

Zinc oxide and zinc sulfate are very efficient providers of zinc when the banding application method is used.

Construction factors of a dam wall

dam wall may seem to be a simple construction, but when you are dealing with the incredible force that water exerts, you have to be very careful with your calculations, building procedures and particularly with your building materials.

Crest width of a dam wall The crest width of the wall is determined by the implements used for the construction. The crown width must be at least 1½ times the width of the implements with which the dam is being built, in order to get good compaction. The crest is also made in a certain relation to the height of the dam wall (see Table 1).

Slopes of a dam wall (Table 2) The factors that determine the slopes of the dam wall are as follows: 1. Seepage lines through the wall.

2. Angle of repose of soil: The slopes of earth walls must be flatter than

the angle of repose or else the soil will shift down along the wall until the above condition is reached.

3. Danger of erosion by wave action: The size of the waves on a dam is in a specific relation to the size of

the surface of the basin. The wave action is also the strongest in the direction of the prevailing winds.

Certain building soils are also more subject to erosion than others. If a wall is unpaved on the water side, it must have a relatively flat slope.

4. Stone pitching or rip-rap: Where paving material is easily obtainable near the building site, the paving of earth dams on the water side must be considered. When the danger of erosion is great, paving is almost the only remaining solution. If a wall must be paved, it is possible to give the wall slightly steeper slopes. Maximum stable side slopes for average building soil (Z1 : 1 water side and Z2 : 1 the rear).

Pipe through dam wall The outlet pipe should always, as far as possible, be placed in undisturbed soil.

The opening of the pipe in the dam basin must always be slightly higher than the deepest place in the dam to prevent silting up of the pipe.

The pipe must have a minimum slope of 1% over its length. Fast closing valves should be avoided to prevent water shock in the pipe.

Concrete collar for outlet pipe The pipe must be placed in a concrete collar with reinforcing steel.

The various measurements needed for the concrete collar, cut-off walls and reinforcing steel for different wall heights above the pipe, are shown and described in Figure 2.

The wall must be thoroughly compacted with manual compactors against the concrete casing to one metre above the pipe.

Cut-off walls Cut-off walls are used to lengthen the seepage line along the concrete casing of a pipe. Table 4 shows the number of cut-off walls prescribed for specific water depths above the pipe. Alternatively, the path of the seepage line must be lengthened by at least 20%.

Use fertilisers from FSG Zambia for a successful crop yield.

Soil Requirements • Cabbage can be grown in well drained soils, provided they are adequately fertilised and well supplied with H85 and Cosmoroot.

Fertilisation • A basal dressing of 250 kg/ha SuperFert veg blend 2 (12:12:12) is recommended.

• Application of SuperFert Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN 27%N) as a topdressing is recommended at a rate of 220 kg/ha. Topdressing can be done twice at three weekly intervals after transplanting.
