D

ark clouds are forming over Zambia. If it were rain, it would have been fine, but unfortunately it is swarms of millions of deadly locusts.

They are deadly because they can cause famine related deaths.

An African migratory locust (AML) outbreak is upon us and already causing havoc in some regions. This is not a typical outbreak of the dreadful desert locusts which cause regular unmeasurable misery in East Africa. This is a local outbreak, which is believed to be originating in the Okavango Delta in Botswana.

According to the FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization) of the United Nations, a swarm of only one square kilometre can consume the same quantity of food as 35 000 people in a single day.

Normally, these insects are harmless and live in solitary for years, but when the conditions are right, usually with a lot of rainfall, a dramatic change happens. Biologists call this the "gregarious phase". They start to increase exponentially in numbers, experience biological changes and start to sense each another. Instead of repelling one another, they become attracted to one another and begin marching in coordination over large areas. If these environmental conditions persist, it will just get worse.

disappear before their eyes in minutes.

We don’t have to elaborate on the consequences …

There are effective precautionary measures and remedies against locust outbreaks, but they must be implemented in time and swiftly. Unfortunately, Sub-Saharan Africa is vast and not famous for our proactive actions.

Aerial surveillance and locust mapping of the region is already implemented with huge success and pesticide spraying is done, but it is limited. Timing is everything and we need to kill them on the ground during the early development phase. Another problem is the ecological sensitivity of their places of origin. Focussed, environmentally friendly pesticides are desperately needed to spare beneficial insects and animals.

The FAO is currently spending $500 000 on aerial surveillance, mapping and other locust suppression strategies. Our farmers can help them by being on constant alert and reporting outbreaks as soon as possible.

Let us hope we come out of this with very few casualties. Luckily, we can stay positive with new innovations in agriculture to keep you safe and boost your profits. Read about proper farm management in this edition and explore the options for mechanisation.

H

ousehold hygiene is not a hot topic on a farm, but your wastewater system needs to work non-stop for you, your family and your farm workers to function as unaffected, normal human beings. The wastewater your home produces is referred to as ‘effluent’ and consists of blackwater (toilet waste) and greywater (shower, sink and laundry waste). Black water flows directly from your household plumbing into a watertight, underground septic tank.

pit is a deeper, larger hole filled with rock for disposing of wastewater in a smaller footprint. A leach pit is not as effective as a larger leach field. Where sewage percolates slowly over a larger area, leach pits are an alternative for smaller properties only where high seasonal ground water is not present.

Greywater from washing machines, sinks and showers contains soaps designed to kill bacteria (clean and disinfect things) and thus discourage optimal septic tank function. You want to encourage helpful good bacteria (digesting anaerobic cultures) to grow in your septic tank and organically treat the waste, not kill helpful bacteria with detergent laden greywater. It is best practice to divert household greywater to a separate leaching area.

The septic tank operates by digesting solids and settling sludge to the bottom and allowing grease to float to the top in the first compartment. Between these two scum layers is a zone of clarified liquid effluent which is internally piped to the second compartment of the septic tank for additional settling.

As incoming sewage from the house fills the first compartment, clarified liquids are forced to leave the second chamber of the septic tank and flow out to the leach field or leach pit.

The typical leach field is a series of chambers or rock filled trenches where effluent is further treated as it slowly percolates through the soil. A leach 2

Bleach and detergents kill the helpful bacteria that thrive in a healthy septic tank to optimally process toilet waste.

Lack of proper septic tank bacteria will cause your leach field to fail from excessive bio-mat accumulation.

Never use any of those septic tank or leach field chemical additives and miracle enzyme cures that supposedly

break down fats and solids in the septic tank. These additives simply allow smaller particulates to pass through the septic tank where they re-unite in the leach field forming a dense biomat.

At best, they will do no harm to your septic system or the environment, just waste your money. The FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) does not approve of any of them – none of these septic cleaning and/or maintenance products have been proven effective in the long run. The deciding factor should be to ask yourself if you would like to see these additives find their way into your well water and thus your digestive system. A properly designed septic tank (large enough with two compartments) is going to operate just fine without those overhyped additives.

Farmers have to take note that Roto Tanks is a plastic moulder and not an engineering firm. They do not provide any soil testing, on-site services, ‘stamped’ engineered plans, or ‘advanced treatment’ septic systems.

Unlike concrete, plastic tanks are not affected by high ground water and saturated soils, which will eventually erode concrete, forcing replacement.

Plastic has many advantages over concrete in addition to durability in wet locations. It boasts consistent quality, and ten-way inlet and outlet ports.

Polyethylene tanks will never crack or leak and they are easily moved around by two people, saving money, the need for heavy machinery and making it easier to build on difficult locations.

Best practice to install a 5 000 litre two-compartment septic tank Even if you are allowed to install a smaller tank, a larger tank will save money in the long run. Larger tanks need to be pumped less often and there is a much smaller chance of eventual bio-mat formation in the leach field. Larger tanks retain effluent for a longer time, allowing solids to settle on the bottom and grease to float to the top. Plus, a larger tank will allow expansion of your house later. Slower percolation rates due to poorly draining soil with clay, bedrock, high ground water, proximity to a creek, or other complications require larger leach fields. A general rule-of-thumb when

estimating the leach field percolation rate is 35 litre per square metre of leach field, which is enough for 3,85 tonnes in normal soils that percolate relatively well.

Your septic system site plan is typically drawn right on top of your property survey, showing the septic system ‘setbacks’, with the tank 1,5 to 3 metres from the house, the leach field at least 6 metres from the house, at least 30 metres away from wells and streams, 7,5 metres away from dry gulches, and 3 metres away from property lines, or whatever the local regulatory officials require.

Picture 3: The home’s sewer line drain pipe needs to slope 2 cm for every metre downhill to the inlet side of the septic tank and the outlet pipe needs to flow downhill at least 1 cm for every metre downhill to the leach field, where the septic tank effluent enters a manifold or distribution (D) box. Beyond the manifold or D box, it is excavated perfectly level at a depth of at least 18 cm below the grade of the manifold pipes or D box and covered with at least 30 cm of soil atop the trench. Trenches can be deeper if the site dictates, but rarely more than 1 m below the finish grade.

Check both compartments yearly and pump the waste out before enough solids accumulate in the first compartment, which might spill over into the second compartment. Depending upon the tank design, this is usually about 40 cm maximum depth of sediment.

Wrap a piece of disposable paper towel around the end of a disposable stick to check the solids level on the bottom of your septic tank.

Pumping a properly sized septic tank A healthy, properly sized septic tank might never need to be pumped, but not pumping when needed will result in grease and solids getting out to the leach field. Particulates, grease and solids create a bio-mat in the leach field percolation area, eventually caus-

ing it to fail and to be cleaned and built again. The normal cycle for pumping a septic tank is every four to seven years (less often in warmer areas and/or lower usages). Without water inside, an empty septic tank is under extreme stress, resisting the weight of backfill around it. This is especially true when soil is wet and when tanks are not properly bedded in plenty of gravel. Stress is critical when sewage pumpers park too close to the tank, so always keep their truck at least 6 m away. With enough stress, an empty concrete and fiberglass tank will crack, start leaking and eventually have to be replaced.

Every septic system has two distinct components. A septic tank to catch solids and a leach field to dispose of liquid. Leach pits are large gravel filled holes and leach pits take advantage of the surface area around the sides of the hole to dispose of large amounts of water in the right soil types.

Leach fields are trenches (or rectangular beds) dug in the yard and filled with 25 to 50 cm of gravel. A 10 cm diameter perforated pipe is placed inside and along the trench. The pipe-in-gravel leach line is covered with geotextile fabric (landscaping weed barrier) and then

leach field perforated pipe being at the same level.

Septic tank installation is relatively straight-forward, but even seasoned professionals can get mired in how they have always done it to realise there are better ways to approach any project. Lack of ventilation at the ends (at least) of each leach field lateral line (finger) is the most common cause of leach field failure – no fresh air in the pipes.

Septic systems contain hazardous human waste and must be approached with proper safety equipment and plenty of caution. Wear disposable protective clothes with full head/mouth covering, face shield and/or goggles, protected sleeves and gloves.

Oxygen is especially important to leach field health and a drywell with surface vent at the end of every lateral line is an instant fix for that, while greatly increasing the capacity and drying out the lateral lines at the same time. Taking the load off your failing leach field is crucial to any repair. An excellent long-term fix is to add one (or more) of the Roto Tanks drywell kits.

The first step in fixing failures is to examine why it failed in the first place.

The most common reasons for leach field failure are a single compartment septic tank, an under-sized leach field and lack of leach field ventilation.

Useful tips from Novatek: First in first out.

The proper way to store your feed

P

roper aquafeed management practices, including transport, handling, and storage practices, are essential to any profitable aquaculture farm. These practices are essential to help maintain nutrient quality from feed supplier to pond in order to prevent wastage in the form of spoilage or physical damage, which can be costly to the fish farmer.

Apart from physical feed wastage, spoilt feed can impair growth performance, reduce water quality, increase disease susceptibility, and subsequently cause mortalities.

The main causes of feed deterioration are either physical or biological damage.

Physical damage includes: Transport and handling: Physical damage can be caused from a variety of factors. Transporting feeds over long distances for extended periods, in open trucks, motorbikes or bicycles, can result in long transit times and, on poor roads, results in pellet damage. This can lead to a concomitant generation in fines and dust. Additionally, the compression and abrasion of pellets caused by excessive or rough handling can lead to pellet damage and increased levels of dust. High levels of dust in feed can lead to a decrease in water quality and will represent an economic loss to the farmer. Moreover, damaged feeds expose the nutrients to microbial action.

Temperature and sunlight: Direct sunlight or extreme heat can damage sensitive nutrients and cause a reduction to the nutritional value of the feed.

Moreover, temperature fluctuations can lead to condensation and free moisture formation. Moisture accompanied with relatively high temperatures will promote fungal, bacterial and insect growth.

Moisture: Excess feed moisture as well as relatively high humidity levels will promote the growth of fungi and insects. It can increase the rate of oxidation and subsequently the rate of spoilage. One of the causes for feed to increase in moisture is condensation.

When feed bags are left in contact with the ground or wall, condensation will form and seep into the bags. In addition, extruded aquafeeds are more porous than pelleted feeds, which increases the moisture absorption in feeds. On top of that, aquaculture environments are generally high humidity areas, especially when working with warm water species. These factors combined can

significantly increase the moisture content in aquafeeds if proper care is not taken.

Insect and rodent infestation: Insects and rodents consume feed and destroy containers, causing feed wastage and economic losses. Moreover, they can introduce bacteria into feeds through their faeces, which leads to feed spoilage.

Biological damage includes: Microbial spoilage: Bacteria, under the right conditions, will rapidly multiply and break down feed to produce acids and waste products. These, in combination with bacteria, can cause harm to fish. In addition, food borne pathogens influence both fish and humans.

For instance, salmonella impairs the quality of proteins and lipids, and produces toxins. Salmonella is a zoonotic bacterium that can be transferred between fish and humans when handled or consumed. Bacteria are not the only microbes that affect feeds. The growth of fungi or mould can damage feed and produce health damaging mycotoxins that, when fed to fish, can cause a decrease in growth performance and overall health.

Oxidation: Oxidation reactions occur in the presence of oxygen which causes feed to spoil at a quicker rate. For instance, fat in feeds and feedstuffs can form peroxides that cause rancidity and off-flavours. These peroxides may bind with proteins or vitamins and reduce their availability. To compound this, aquafeeds are often high in fats, which are more susceptible to oxidation.

To prevent or minimise the deterioration of feeds, the following important guidelines should be applied: • Store dry feeds for no longer than three months. Use old feeds before the new deliveries or batches. The first in, first out practice should be applied.

• Do not walk on the feed bags or use excessive force when handling them.

• Provide a clean, cool, dry, secure, and well-ventilated storage area, such as storage sheds. Feeds that accumulate high moisture levels (≥ 13%) cause insects and moulds to become active at high temperatures.

Temperatures below 15o C will reduce or retard insect growth.

• Place feed bags out of direct sunlight.

peratures will damage ingredients such as essential vitamins.

Feed bags should not be piled more than 10 bags high on a platform 12 to 15 cm off the floor. Too much weight on the bags can cause physical damage to the feed.

Short-term storage bins should be placed under shade cloth in sealed bins. The bins should be sealed when not in use. Sealed bins limit oxygen supply for oxidation and reduces the quantity of moisture that the feed is exposed to.

To discourage insects infestation, the application or dusting of nontoxic diatomaceous earth around and under the pallets can form part of the feed storage management programme.

Disinfect the storage room and feed equipment regularly. This involves the physical or chemical disinfection of microbes that may contaminate feeds.

Fumigate the feed storeroom to ensure that there are no insects or pests. A fumigant is a chemical which can exist in the gaseous state in a sufficient concentration to be lethal to a given pest organism.

In conclusion, all the efforts made to produce and store feed is a team effort between farmer and producer. Against this background, the shelf-life claimed by the producers can be affected by onfarm storage techniques.

ut health – why is it important?

A good start is the key to good end results and the same good start is an important factor in maximising profits from broiler operations. It is possible that early nutrition in the first seven days of a chick’s life may programme the bird’s system and set a pattern for growth and productivity. Early chick growth results into two to five times the growth rate of tissues in the digestive tract and those organs involved in digestion. If digestive growth is retarded during this time period, overall growth rate may be compromised.

Further, a newly hatched chick is more prone to gut infections as its natural defence is yet to be strengthened. So, proper care should be taken during this time period.

What a farmer needs to know It has to be noted that early access to nutrients post-hatch has a major impact on the immediate and long-term development of the chick. A healthy gut is essential for the efficient conversion of feed into its basic components for optimal nutrient absorption.

Gut health, an intricate and complex area combining nutrition, microbiology, immunology and physiology, has a key role to play in broiler growth. Once the gut is compromised, digestion and nutrient absorption will be affected which, in turn, can have a detrimental effect on feed conversion leading to economic loss and a greater susceptibility to disease. This article aims to explore the area of gut health and outline key factors that are important in the development and maintenance of optimal gut function.

• Oesophagus (gullet): Transports food from the mouth to the stomach.

he interior design of your dairy can make or break your operation. With some clever thinking beforehand, your dairy will become a place of pride for generations to come.

Doors Because dairy buildings usually have wet floors, it is advisable to saw off the doorframes 150 mm above the floor and build it up with cement. This will prevent rotting of wooden frames and rusting of steel frames. The doors, through which cows have to walk, must be at least 1,2 m wide (Smith, 1998).

Windows The window surface in the milking parlour must cover a minimum of 15% of the total floor area and at least 50% of 12

the window area must be able to open.

Windows must be placed so that the entire parlour receives light during the day.

Window sills must slope downwards to all sides and be finished off smoothly to prevent dust from collecting on them.

Roof Use a flat or pitched roof of galvanised iron. A ceiling is not a prerequisite, but then the rafters have to be planed down smoothly and the rafters and underside of the roof must be painted with light coloured and washable paint.

There must be no gaps between the roof and the walls.

Milking pit The pit length of a fishbone milking parlour is determined by the following

formula (Engelbrecht, 1991).

Pit length (m) = 1,07 x number of milking points + 2,5 This represents the length taken up by a cow when she stands at an angle of between 30° to 45°, a distance of 1,5 m from the front of the pit, which is sufficient for mounting the end-unit and milk pump in its length along the side of the pit and an additional 1 metre on the back of the pit.

The depth of the pit is 850 mm to 865 mm and extends from the standing level of the cows to the floor of the pit.

For foot space inside the pit, the pit wall is built slanting to the top with a deviation of 106 mm outwards on both sides. The vertical extension of the pit

wall to the top (splash wall) extends 150 mm above the standing level of the cows and is 100 mm wide (Engelbrecht, 1991).

The width of the pit is normally 1,8 m and if bottles are used, it is 2,0 m. The width between milking units on both sides of the pit may not be smaller than 950 mm.

The pit floor is of concrete and 100 mm thick with a slope of 1:70 to the drainage canal in the centre of the floor or both

sides of the pit next to the vertical walls. If the drainage canal is in the centre of the floor, it must be covered with a steel grate. As mentioned in the previous article, the pit floor and walls are tiled.

Platform The manure canal in the platform on which the cows are standing must be covered with a galvanised iron grate to prevent cows from stepping into it (see Picture 2).

and 45°, a gate is fitted at an angle of 30° to 45° on the front of the platform.

If there are no feeding troughs in the milking parlour, a pipe/breast railing must be fitted at a height of 950 mm at the front and upper side of the platform to prevent cows from rubbing against the wall.

Rails placed around the pit on the platform, must be directly joined against the splash wall. The standing space widths for cows between the railings around the pit and the breast railing, which needs to be just a straight railing, vary between 900 mm for smaller breeds such as Jerseys to 1 000 mm for larger breeds such as

Milk room A free space of at least 800 mm must be provided around the tank. Also make provision for the storage of milk cans and other utensils with metal shelves, at least 500 mm above the floor surface (Smith, 1998). The walls must be at least 2,4 m to 2,7 m high with a smooth, light coloured and washable interior surface. There may not be any sharp folds. Be careful when using conventional wall tiles, as the folds can offer breeding place for germs (Smith, 1998). A ceiling is not essential if the roof surface is smooth, light in colour and washable and dust cannot enter the room. A double door, garage door or roller door must be provided in a position closest to the loading point of the milk tanker. If the milk room and scullery are separate rooms, a sliding door must be fitted between the two rooms, while direct

access between the milk room and milk parlour must have a solid door.

The window area must extend over at least 15% of the total floor surface and at least 50% of the window area must be able to open. Windowsills must be aslant to prevent dust collecting.

Sufficient cross ventilation and artificial lighting must also be provided.

For efficient drainage, the floor must be sloping at a gradient of 1:70 and floors must be at least 100 mm thick.

Scullery The scullery is used for washing up of all dairy equipment. All the requirements concerning the construction of the milk room, except for the doors and size of the room, apply to the scullery.

Bathroom The same regulations regarding construction, as applicable to the milk room and scullery, also apply here.

Entry may only be allowed from a screened-off outer door. The minimum floor surface is 7 m2 with a minimum width of 1,8 m.

Machine room The room must be large enough to accommodate the vacuum pump(s) and compressor(s) and to leave sufficient moving space around the equipment.

The compressor of the milk tank is placed in the machine room opposite an opening in the back-to-back wall of the machine and milk room. Cool air is extracted from the milk room through the opening and creates a coolingdown effect.

Provision must be made for the application of a tractor or other power source, in the case of a power failure.

Jones Masjiene:

Make feed pellets anywhere in only two steps

T

he small town of Koster in the North West province of South Africa suffers under depopulation and increasing unemployment, like most other towns in South Africa. One stronghold against this tide of regression is Jones Masjiene. This feed-plant manufacturer secures employment for 31 people and has beaten the electricity supply challenge, which is currently crippling the country. They are running their whole factory, including the heavy steel cutting equipment, from their own solar electricity plant.

In the spirit and fashion of a true South African farmer, Willie Jones, the owner and founder, is looking far beyond the borders of South Africa to expand his business. Today he has lined up satisfied clients in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Angola, Malawi, Lesotho, Australia, Madagascar, and Mauritius. The first shipment of equipment to the US is also in the pipeline.

Jones Masjiene manufactures 120 different types of grain and feed processing machines, including hammer mills, conveyors, lick-block presses, and pellet machines, but they are most famous for their flat die pelleting machines.

Compacting feed Pelleted feed offers huge advantages for livestock farmers. It reduces the volume

and storage area, eliminates dust, reduces wastage, prevents animals from segregating feed, improves palatability and prevents infestations by insects.

21 years ago, Jones Masjiene built their first 303 round die pelleting machine and installed it with their first complete feed and pelleting plant on the farm of George Ramasoka from Ramotswa in Botswana.

It was driven with a 37-kW motor and used a 4,5-mm die. This machine is still producing between 1,8 and 2,1 tonnes of chicken pellets per hour.

Profeeds in Harare in Zimbabwe is also still using a Jones Masjiene pelleting plant with four machines, installed 17 years ago, and all of them are working 24 hours a day, six days a week.

Jones Masjiene caters for many more industries and their pelleting dies are available in 3, 4,5, 6, 10 and 16 mm sizes. They supply a range of machines driven by 11 to 45 kW motors, but since the pressure in a pelleting machine gets awfully high with increments in size, Willie prefers to reduce the risk and rather offer two smaller machines instead of a big one. This holds other benefits, such as a reduction in collective down time.

A diesel-propelled pelleting machine opens new solutions for farmers who struggle with a stable electricity supply. a normal feed cutter/mixer. You do not need to send the roughage through a hammer mill before pelletising, thereby eliminating the cost and effort of one step, and preventing the loss of nutrients blowing away on dust particles.

The higher the accuracy and more advanced the technology of the manufacturing equipment, the faster the manufacturing processes, and the better the machines will be. Jones Masjiene uses the best the market can offer to turn steel into feed plants.

They employ a Hypertherm high definition plasma cutter that easily cuts through 50 mm steel plate; a Bystronic fibre laser, Panasonic CO2 welders, and even a Panasonic robot welder. Their milling machines, lathes and bending machines are also on the leading edge.

Another exciting Jones Masjiene design is a diesel-driven pelleting machine. This is especially popular with farmers in the bone-dry regions of Namibia and Botswana, who started highly successful “boskos� production with the invasive thorn bushes that invade their grasslands. They can now move their pelletisers to the most remote areas on their vast farms and go home with nicely compacted feed in bags. The cherry on top is the space made available for their pastures to recover once the invader bushes have been utilised.

SeedCo's SC647:

Your seed choice for a 10 plus tonnes maize crop

M

aize continues to register itself as the world’s most coveted grain. The OECD/FAO Agriculture Outlook projected an increase in production of global maize to 1,2 billion metric tonness by 2027, representing a 121 million tonne jump in a 10-year projected period.

The projections include a 16% increase in demand for maize consumed, with Sub-Sahara Africa continuing to register an increase in demand for maize for both human and livestock consumption. These projections of aggregate demand are most likely going to attract commodity price increases, especially given the impact of climate change and, most recently, COVID-19 on agriculture production.

This month, we focus on another record breaking variety: A two tonnes per hectare yield over the registered yield potential of the variety, and four tons per hectare over and above the crop nutrition programme applied.

That is the result of one of our farmers, Triple S Ranch, who chose to plant SeedCo’s SC 647 during the 2019/2020 season. We are talking over 50 hectares of an early to medium maturity maize hybrid averaging 11,4 tonnes per hectare of excellent quality grain in a soil environment with a pH around five and total rainfall figures of 1 550 mm.

The results show the variety’s nutrient use efficiency in an acidic environment and excellent cob rot tolerance, and another critical factor, good management practices in establishing the crop and seeing it through to harvest.

This was done with starter compound fertiliser (WVC) and followed by a good herbicide spray to keep the weed competition at its minimum. The crop’s emergence was excellent, thanks to the farmer’s good agronomic practice and the expected performance of the certified SC 647.

Crop nutrition: The crop was put on a nutrition programme that targeted eight tons per hectare yield. The excess yield of close to four tons per hectare can therefore be attributed to the variety’s efficiency to utilise available nutrients,

Crop protection: Good weed management early in the season coupled with two insecticide sprays targeted mainly at FAW and bollworm, plus one fungicide was enough to keep insect pests at their minimum. An amazing thing was how clean the grain was, with only one fungicide applied, in a 1 550 mm rainfall season.

That is a combination of good crop rotation and good variety choice. At SeedCo, we say #BumperHarvests #StartWithTheRightSeed.

Variety tolerance to soil acidity Tandzi et al. (2018), in their publication titled “Breeding maize for tolerance to acidic soils” highlight that acidic soils cause as high as 69% maize yield loss.

Soil acidity however continues to be one of crop production’s increasing challenges. This is due to circumstances ranging from micro-environments (annual rainfall), crop management practices that relate especially to monocropping maize or nitrogen loving cereals, and industrial effluents that increase acidity in irrigation water. Its effects in causing aluminium, manganese and iron toxicity, and the locking of phosphorus has been highlighted as the cause of between 2,8% and 71% yield losses in maize.

In their publication, Tandzi et al. highlight that genetic variability for tolerance to low soil pH exists among maize genotypes, which can be exploited in developing high-yielding acid-tolerant maize genotypes. At SeedCo, we have observed and received good feedback from our customers on how excellent the SC 647 tolerates harsh acidic soil environments like the Agro-ecological region three of Zambia all the way into the rainforest farming areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

As you plan for your next crop of maize, our advice is: Bumper harvests start with the right seed. Your seed choice must determine what other support inputs you are investing into your crop.
