Skill-Up Week 2024

Skill-Up Programme 2024 Skill-Up marks the end of the Lower School journey for the Hundred. The programme this year provides a range of experiences that will provide a challenging and enjoyable end to the academic year.

There will be a handful of pupils sitting GCSE papers on the Monday and Wednesday of Skill-Up week in the Summer Term and some courses will, therefore, not be available to those pupils affected.

However, the programme for the week will allow ALL Hundred pupils to take part in a very exciting array of activities.

The CCF trip will take place the week after Skill-Up week.

How to sign up Before half-term, the Hundred will be provided with an online form to sign up for their chosen course. Where there are restricted numbers, places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Following this allocation process, course leaders will be in touch to provide more details and where there is a cost incurred, ensure permissions are granted.

All Hundred from the Main Programme, additional courses and CCF will begin their Skill-Up experience at a BBQ in the Common Room Garden.

Wednesday will see the pupils take part in ‘Time Attack’ – a skill and teambuilding event run by WiseUp Teambuilding.

The evening will be magical, as we welcome back David Penn, world-renowned magician who was a finalist on Britain’s Got Talent and is the mastermind behind many of the tricks used by famous magicians today.

Tuesday 18th June: A programme of workshops and teambuilding events will be offered which will allow pupils to learn new skills that may prove useful in later life. Workshops may include elements of business, finance, technology and even the chance to learn how to make a film! After dinner, the Hundred will enjoy ‘The Pub Quiz Challenge’ – hosted by the legendary Mr Willmett!

Thursday 20th June: WiseUp Teambuilding return to test the pupils on their Survival Skills with a day of Bush-Craft challenges!

Throughout the course of the week, teams will be earning points to try to win vouchers for Bunces or The Food Gallery – this challenge will be the last chance! A formal mocktails and canapés reception will take place at the cricket pavilion in the evening – pupils will have the chance to dress up in black-tie/formal attire for this hugely popular event.

Friday 21st June: On the final day of Skill-Up Week, Mr Eysele will lead the cohort in a reflective workshop before the ‘Total Wipeout’ final team challenge. Following a lunchtime BBQ, pupils not involved in co-curricular commitments, fitness instructor or cookery courses on the Friday or lifesaving assessments on the Saturday would be welcome to take a Priv Weekend from the Friday afternoon at 2.30pm.

One-Day Cookery Course with Coco & Roses Cost: £75 Course Leader: Mrs Wrench Dates: Monday 17th – Friday 21st June Capacity: 12 per course (5 days available) Location: Marlborough College Run by local catering firm, Coco & Roses, pupils on this course will learn how to create approximately five dishes and taste everything at each session. A typical session would include following a recipe, kitchen and ingredient preparation as well as cooking and tasting. Recipes will include healthy snacks, main courses, puddings, sharing platters and takeaway favourites!

Skill-Up Cricket Cost: £30 Course Leaders: Mr Alleyne (Cricket Professional) Dates: Sunday 16th – Friday 21st June Capacity: 15 approx.

Location: Marlborough College/London

The Colts Cricket Skill-Up Activity will provide Hundred cricketers with an opportunity to immerse themselves in cricket once their GCSEs are over. There will be matches against The Brympton XI (an adult side) and a touring team from Singapore at home on the XI, and Eton away. There is trip to London for a tour of Lord’s and a T20 Blast match at the Oval. This is with the aim of developing cricketers ahead of the Sixth Form and, most importantly, fostering an enjoyment of the game. Pupils will join in with the Main Events programme on campus when not involved with cricket.

Chalk Stream Fly Fishing Course Cost: £300 Course Leader: Mr Gordon (Head of Fishing) Dates: Monday 17th – Friday 21st June Capacity: 8 Location: Wiltshire

Pupils will stay at the College and we will make day trips out to the various fisheries. Some prior fishing experience is expected but enthusiasm is a greater requirement than skill.

We will provide all the required equipment, however a pair of wellies would be useful.

This is an opportunity to learn and develop fly fishing skills and to experience fishing on some of the finest chalk streams in England, as well as learning about their ecology and how to conserve them.

Over the course of the week, pupils will have the opportunity to fish on stretches of the Kennet, Avon and Itchen under the guidance and tutelage of the College’s fly fishing coach, Rob Green. In addition, they will learn from river keepers and conservationists about these precious habitats and how they are managed. Pupils will be instructed on how to tie their own flies and will be challenged to catch their own fish on them. There will also be the chance to cook the catch.

Gym Instructor Course (Level 2) Cost: £430 Course Leader: Mr Hetherton (Strength & Conditioning Coach) Dates: Monday 17th – Friday 21st June Capacity: 20 Location: Marlborough College By the end of this course, participants will be fully qualified and able to apply for jobs to work in a gym or leisure centre.

Six weeks prior to the start of the course, essential reading is provided with digital worksheets to complete. The course is taught over five days and pupils will need a laptop and internet access. Days 1 to 4 cover theory and practical skills including anatomy and physiology, cardiovascular performance using free weights and machine weights.

On the final two days, pupils will take a theory exam (70% pass mark) and practical assessments both 1:1 and as a group.

A learner assessment record will also be completed during the course.

Candidates can be under 16 to take the course, but will only receive their qualification once aged 16 years.

Skill-Up Riviera Cost: £900 Course Leaders: Mrs Woodford (Head of Modern Languages) and Mrs Scott (History of Art) Dates: Sunday 16th – Thursday 20th June Capacity: 20 Location: Nice, South of France This course presents an opportunity to explore this beautiful part of the South coast of France. The azure blue sea and warm sunshine of Nice provide an idyllic setting to enjoy the culture of the area. The French Riviera and surrounding countryside became a haven for artists, writers and those seeking a warmer climate in the early twentieth century.

Our trip will combine gallery and museum visits with delicious meals, meandering through market towns and even a chance to explore some beautiful beaches.

Based in Nice, pupils will visit the studio of Matisse and the Chagall Museum. There will also be excursions to St Paul de Vence, Antibes and to Cap Ferrat to see the incredible Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild.

National Pool Lifeguard Qualification Cost: £225 Course Leader: Mrs Christopher Dates: Monday 17th – Saturday 22nd June Capacity: 12 Location: Marlborough College Recognised around the world, the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification covers all elements of pool rescue techniques, lifeguarding theory, first aid and CPR. The course is physically demanding, and all pupils must be able to swim 100 metres continuously on front and back.

Please note that all candidates must attend all elements of the week and be available for an assessment on Saturday 22nd June. All those taking part must be 16 years old by the date of the assessment.

PADI Open Water Diving Course Cost: £549 Course Leader: Dr Roberts Dates: Monday 17th – Friday 21st June Capacity: 15 Location: Marlborough College Enjoy the thrill of breathing underwater coupled with the feeling of weightlessness!

The Open Water Diver Qualification is the first step in learning to dive. It is the most widely accepted qualification in the world, upon successful completion of which the qualification holder is entitled to dive in most locations around the globe.

The first three days of the course are based at the College, involving a series of classroom and pool based lessons, during which you learn all the skills you need in order to dive safely in an open water environment.

On the last two days, pupils will visit a local dive site to practise new skills whilst enjoying the thrills of the open water.

Surf and Turf Cost: £260 Course Leader: Mr Tong Dates: Monday 17th – Friday 21st June Capacity: 10 Location: The Gower, Wales

We will be accommodated at Hardingsdown Bunkhouse and Chaffhouse, on the Gower Peninsula: www.hardingsdowncottages.co.uk Catering will be a combination of being well looked after by our host, Allison, and self-catering. In addition, both groups may be offered the opportunity of an overnight beach bivvie and BBQ if the weather is appropriate.

Pupils will depart College after the last exam on Monday 17th June and once in the Gower, they can participate in Surf sessions facilitated by qualified instructors. Surfing lessons will be programmed for three consecutive days. The local surf school will provide all the necessary kit and the course will be predominately based out from Llangennith beach.

Other planned activities will be a little less prescribed; for those interested in either climbing, both ‘sport’ climbing and ‘trad’ climbing, there will be visits to some of the incredible climbing venues the Gower peninsular offers. Those who wish to keep their feet firmly on the ground may be interested in some guided coastal walks utilising the Welsh Coastal Path, a relaxed way to enjoy the splendid beauty of the Gower including ‘The Worms Head’ and Three Cliffs Bay. Beach Games will feature as part of the week’s activities!

LTA Tennis Leaders Course Cost: Free Course Leader: Mr Wright Dates: Tuesday 18th – Friday 21st June Capacity: 24 Location: Marlborough College LTA Youth Tennis Leaders is an exciting leadership programme, accredited by SLQ Sports Leaders, who have worked with the LTA to ensure the core leadership skills of communication, self-belief, teamwork, self-management and problem solving are embedded throughout this course.

The programme is an excellent leadership pathway for tennis, sport and beyond.

Pupils can learn the basics of tennis and understand how variations of the game are used to introduce all ages and abilities to the sport. Learn communication and organisational skills and some key on court drills, running through a range of modules to help you learn how to coach. The skills learned in this programme will develop any pupils hoping to coach younger pupils as part of their Outreach in the Sixth Form.

Vienna: How to Read a Great City Cost: £885 Course Leader: Mr Moule (Head of History) Dates: Sunday 16th – Friday 21st June Capacity: 15 Location: Vienna, Austria

in its present incarnation – it survived World War Two and the Cold War almost intact – and the elegant grandeur of today’s city is likely both to delight and move pupils.

Vienna is one of the most stunning and interesting of capital cities and a wonderful place to explore. Pupils will gain a knowledge of the main periods in Vienna’s history whilst learning how to ‘read’ such a place. There will also be plenty of time to relax and to get to know the city in small groups.

Doubtless pupils will enjoy many different faces of the city: for instance the famous coffee houses, the spectacular palaces and gardens of the Hapsburgs and their courtiers, as well as the markets, the ubiquitous trams and the banks of the Danube.

There may also be a show and/or opera and visits to museums including the Military Museum (with the car in which Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot in 1914), the Upper Belvedere (home to Klimt’s iconic painting ‘The Kiss’), and the Secession Building, one of the birthplaces of modern art.

The momentous character of such as place is still easily sensed
