DIRECTOR’S WELCOME Good evening and thank you for joining us here in Batheaston.

We are delighted to be staging what will be only our third full-scale musical production. Can you believe over two years have passed since we re-visited the Sixties and five since man-eating plants descended from outer space?

The past year has seen Encore take a break from our regular programme by performing back-to-back cabarets. A Taste of Music II featured a mix of comedy sketches and live music, which then formed strong foundations for our spectacular Charity Gala Magical Memories, a joint collaboration between Encore and ex-members of Bath’s Musical Youth Theatre Company. Cramming a 50-strong cast onto the stage before you proved just about achievable and the two week run raised a staggering £4,100 for Dorothy House Hospice and the New Batheaston Village Hall Fund. Encore also reached its 10-year anniversary in March, with a memorable evening at Bailbrook House and exciting plans made for the New Year as we make a long-overdue return to Pantomime. Auditions for The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe will soon be held, keep a lookout for that information as we’d love you to join us. Please also save the dates; we’ll be performing in our usual slot over two weeks, the last week in January and the first week in February.

Back to this week’s production, I Love You Because is a fantastic little musical, with a storyline very loosely based on a well-known Jane Austen novel. The Bennet sisters have become brothers, Mr Darcy a flighty female photographer and Lady Catherine - well, hardly lady-like. Tonight we’ll transport you across the pond, far away from rural English countryside into a modern New York world of one-night-stands and dating websites. Our talented cast and fantastic live band have been working extremely hard over the past ten weeks to pull this show together, and I’m sure their time and dedication will shine through on stage. The show’s message is a simple one.

It highlights the importance of loving someone not in spite of their faults, but because of them. I’ll use that one the next time I leave the washing-up on the side.

A few of the cast and production team have fond memories of this show, as will some of our supporters. I’d like to dedicate this week’s run to one such supporter.

MARK SELLICK Director

RYAN CUNNINGHAM BOOK AND LYRICS

Ryan Cunningham is a native of Needham, MA, and he holds a B.A. in Theatre and Graphic Design from the University of Notre Dame and an M.F.A. from NYU’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program. At Notre Dame Ryan wrote the book to Chance at Love with Composer/Lyricist Tommy Curtin, which toured nationally in the summer of 2001.

With Composer Joshua Salzman he wrote the book and lyrics for the Off-Broadway musical I Love You Because, for which he received a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Lyrics. Other projects include Queen Esther, a family musical based on the Jewish holiday of Purim, and an untitled song cycle. Also with Joshua Salzman, he made his television writing debut last year creating songs for Disney’s Johnny and the Sprites, starring John Tartaglia.

Ryan is a member of The Dramatists Guild and the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop.

JOSHUA SALZMAN MUSIC

Joshua Salzman is the composer of I Love You Because.

Recent projects include Queen Esther, a family musical based on the Jewish holiday of Purim, and an untitled song cycle.

With Ryan Cunningham, he made his television writing debut last

year creating songs for Disney’s Johnny and the Sprites, starring John Tartaglia.

Joshua holds an M.F.A. from NYU’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program and degrees in composition and music education from Muhlenberg and Moravian Colleges. He has served in the music departments of Wicked and All Shook Up and is currently on faculty at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy.

Memberships include: The Dramatists Guild, AFM Local 802 and the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop.

MARK SELLICK DIRECTOR

Mark has lived in and worked in and around Bath all his life. He attended Writhlington School

where he studied Music and Performing Arts at A-Level before moving into a career based around design for print and screen. Mark now works as a Digital Marking Executive for local brewery and pub/restaurant operator Bath Ales.

Working in a 9 to 5 environment has left Mark with plenty of spare time at evenings and weekends to explore a love of theatre. Starting out with youth groups Exit Stage Left and Keynsham Youth Theatre Mark has taken lead roles in various productions, his highlight being the opportunity to sing extracts from Les Miserables on a West End stage. Mark then joined adult theatre companies Encore and Keynsham Light Opera Group to further explore performing opportunities, as well as

continuing his long-standing relationship with Exit Stage Left as the group moved into Bath and developed into an adult theatre company in its own right.

In recent years Mark has directed two A Taste of Music dinner cabarets with Encore, the Pantomime Goldilocks and the Three Bears and the musical A Slice of Saturday Night, the latter two each receiving Rose Bowl Award nominations for Best Pantomime and Best Musical respectively. Whilst Mark thoroughly enjoys the different challenges co-ordinating a production presents, he has been itching to get back on stage properly with Encore, and was delighted to be cast in I Love You Because for this run.

Mark has also fulfilled a couple of long-standing ambitions in recent months; he performed in a show at Bath’s Theatre Royal with The Witches of Eastwick, and took the role of Roger in Jonathan Larson’s rock-opera RENT, both with Bath Operatic and Dramatic Society.

To round off a great year Mark stepped into the role of Freddie Charleston in the original Music is Life Productions musical Pencoweth, when an opportunity to perform at Cornwall’s beautiful Minack Theatre presented itself.

Mark is eternally grateful to some great friends for being given these fantastic performing opportunities at a much needed time.

Mark will next be performing in the musical I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change with a Saltford-based company early next year, and will be involved in Encore’s next Pantomime, The Old Woman Who Lived in a Show.

PHILIP STYLES

MUSICAL DIRECTOR Philip hails from a very musical family and was brought up in Colerne. He studied Music and Drama at Bath Spa University graduating in 2006 with an honours degree.

Whilst there he sang in the massed and chamber choirs and played viola in the orchestra. Following university Philip briefly worked at the Theatre Royal box office before joining the MoD, gaining his accountancy qualification and becoming a member of the AAT. Philip has been in much demand on stage, amongst his listed performances have been Chorister in Organum, a 2008 Canadian tour with The Silver Ring Choir, and as part of Bath’s 2010 International Music Festival he performed in The Battle of Quiberon Bay at the Roman Baths. He is a regular soloist with The Bath Chorus and the Chamber Choir Noctis, led by Francis Faux. He has also been heard on Radio 3 performing with Bath Camerata and I Faglioni in concert.

In recent years Philip has appeared in original musicals The Decent Rogues and Pencoweth with Music is Life Productions, performed operatic roles including Nanki Poo in The Mikado, Spoletta in Tosca, Basilio in The Marriage of Figaro, Tchekalinsky in Queen of Spades and has even appeared as an extra in Persuasion. His personal highlight though was the opportunity to work as an ensemble member in director Steven Spielberg’s War Horse when filming in Castle Combe.

With all this highbrow musicality Philip decided to try his comedic

abilities by appearing in Exit Stage Left’s Seussical, Lucky Stiff with Merriman Productions at The Rondo and Muddles in Colerne’s Pantomime Snow White. With Encore, Philip has appeared in our Yule Love It Christmas-themed cabarets, in Pantomimes The Pied Piper and as comic Arthur Question in Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

He will be appearing in Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes with Bath Opera in February.

We’ve no idea how Philip has managed to fit in I Love You Because, but we’re all certainly very glad he has!

GREG VERE PRODUCER

Born and educated in Manchester, Greg then went on to study drama at the Northern School of Music, Speech and Drama, and on leaving he trawled the agents and castings finally landing up in London playing minor roles on TV and in film, but nothing to set the world alight.

Following a specifically sticky patch, when it dawned on him he was never going to be Laurence Olivier II, Greg moved to Bath with his partner in 1975, immediately becoming involved with the Bath Operatic and Dramatic Society, playing the dashing and handsome juvenile lead role of Jack Absolute in The Rivals (“oh how time and age catches up with you!”) It was during that production that he encountered The Bodlets (now Zenith) Theatre Company, the then junior section of BODS, when he was asked to appear as a guest in the role of Chitterlow, the highly eccentric actor/manager in Half a Sixpence.

As luck would have it, the director of the musical was leaving following the show and The Bodlets needed someone to take his place. So with absolutely no experience of directing whatsoever, Greg applied for the position, and to his lasting amazement, was given it.

Then followed twelve years of tremendous fun and many productions, enabling him to grow and learn the tricks of the trade, until, in 1986 Greg felt he needed to do more than just direct the young actors and actresses of Bath and so in 1987 he founded Musical Youth Theatre Company, to nurture the talent he was fortunate enough to attract to the ranks. The upshot being that Greg ended up steering them to many awards and nominations over their 15 year existence, providing the springboard for some well known faces now enjoying major success on TV and film, and finally gaining his own personal award for Services to Drama and Theatre.

In 2002, Greg decided he needed to put his feet up after the many years of youth theatre, and so quite happily settled down at home in his beloved Batheaston for a well earned rest... or so he thought!

In 2004 after some persuasion, he, along with a small band of like-minded souls, decided to resurrect a company that had been at the heart of the village for many years but folded in the early 90’s.

Encore Northenders Theatre Company was born. Greg has steered the group to numerous awards and award nominations over the years, both as Artistic Director and more recently as Producer.

Greg would like to wish the I Love You Because cast and production team the best of luck for the run.

BECCA LONG SET DESIGN

Following her time at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where she gained a BA Hons in Theatre Design, we were very pleased to welcome Becca back to the Encore fold for our last Pantomomie, Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Not only did Becca raise the roof with a hilarious performance as Princess Olivia, but she created us a stunning woodland setting, our best scenery to date - it was such a shame to chop down those trees!

Set design and construction is far from straight forward a task.

Not only do you need creative flair but you need to juggle the requirements of a challenging script, technical demands, venue limitations, and, above everything else, budgets. Becca’s vision will transport you across the pond tonight - we’re amazed at how she does what she does.

On stage, Becca first appeared with Encore in one of our Yule Love It cabarets before joining our Sleeping Beauty cast as the wonderfully hapless but loveable Fairy Snowdrop. She then went on to play Chiffon in our award nominated musical Little Shop of Horrors. Thankfully despite her studies in Wales, Becca did manage to travel back and join us to perform a solo in our 2011 Pizzazz cabaret, but apart from that one occasion she has very much been missed both on and off stage.

Becca has also appeared extensively with Exit Stage Left, with one of her most memorable

roles, Ida in Honk, gaining her a Rose Bowl Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical.

We sincerely hope Becca will be able to be involved in as many Encore productions as possible, on and off stage, before the inevitable happens and she moves on to make her career in professional theatre.

ANDREW WHITING

SOUND/LIGHTING DESIGN Andrew studied technical theatre at the Guildford School of Acting and has spent more than a decade in the sound and lighting industry.

Over that time he has gathered a wealth of knowledge and experience travelling across the country and working with some big name companies, theatres and performers (including Jimmy Carr and Dame Judi Dench) all of which has helped him in setting up his company, Starlight Sound and Lighting, who have expertly provided lighting and sound for I Love You Because.

Locally, Andrew has been an instrumental part of Encore, helping out wherever he can by designing and running the sound and lighting for our productions and also by sitting on the Encore Committee.

Andrew is also actively involved with the award-winning Exit Stage Left, most recently designing the lighting and sound for a production he holds very close to his heart from his drama school days, the musical When Midnight Strikes at The Rondo Theatre.

RUSSELL PITMAN STAGE MANAGER

Russell has been a member of Encore since moving to Bath two years ago for the next stage of his education at the city of Bath College studying Media. Getting on board with the Pantomime Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Russell became Stage Manager, a role which he has performed at all Encore productions since. He also ably assists on the technical side of production but operating lighting and sound on occasion.

As a result of this experience Russell has worked with many other theatre companies in the surrounding area and is very much looking forward to I Love You Because this week.

Stagecoach Bath is now recruiting No previous experience is necessary, just enthusiasm for singing, dance and drama.

Being a Stagecoach student is all about having fun each week with friends who share a passion for the performing arts. Stagecoach helps students develop many important skills, such as teamwork, poise and articulation which are all great ways to build confidence in young people and develop communication skills.

Classes are held on Fridays and Saturdays during term time.

Early Stages (4-6 year olds) Students enjoy half an hour of singing, half an hour of dance and half an hour of drama with a specialist teacher and a classroom assistant.

ANDREW ENGLISH AUSTIN BENNETT Andrew grew up in Bath, studying at Beechen Cliff school and Bournemouth and Poole College of Further Education.

He went on to read Performing Arts at Winchester University and now works as a drama teacher at St Joseph’s Catholic College in Swindon and at Curtain Up Theatre School in Bath.

Andrew has been performing from a very early age starting out in HTV’s Junior Drama Workshop. Since moving back to Bath, Andrew has performed with many local groups, I Love You Because will be his 6th show this year!

Notable roles include Curly in Oklahoma!, Pirelli in Sweeney Todd, Gordon Schwinn in A New Brain, Man #3 in I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, Bobby in Company, Princeton in Avenue Q, Chip Tolentino in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and most recently Christoper West in Exit Stage Left’s When Midnight Strikes.

He will next be taking part in Bath Light Opera Group’s Jesus Christ Superstar at the Theatre Royal next month.

Andrew has also been very busy recently with Spare Room Theatre, along with Encore’s Harry Burt and Exit Stage Left’s James Moore they have been touring Gutenberg! The Musical around Bath and Bristol, making a stop here in Batheaston earlier this year. Andrew clearly couldn’t wait to return to the Church Hall and is now thrilled to be playing Austin, a role he has had his eye on for some time! He hopes you enjoy the show.

VICKY SHADWICK MARCY FITZWILLIAMS For the last five years Vicky has somehow been juggling her love for performing and all things theatre with working at a Primary School in Glastonbury.

Despite the long hours and levels of dedication teaching requires we were delighted when she was able to audition for I Love You Because, finally joining Encore’s ranks after many years of supporting our shows in the audience - we are of course very grateful!

At school Vicky co-runs a drama group called the St John’s Starmakers, something which she finds very rewarding. She is so proud of the children in the group who, despite their young ages, show lots of promise in the acting area.

Vicky is also the PE coordinator for the school and a governor!

Outside school, Vicky has been performing with Exit Stage Left since its inception, gaining rave reviews for her portrayals of characters such as Nancy in Oliver and Mrs Johnstone in Blood Brothers. In recent years she has also appeared in productions of A New Brain, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, [title of show] and the fantastic ‘whodunnit’ musical When Midnight Strikes at The Rondo Theatre back in July. Despite Vicky’s character in When Midnight Strikes surprising most of the audience, for those that know her it will comes as no surprise to learn her favourite role to date was that of Marcy Fitzwilliams, when Exit Stage Left first performed the musical you’ll be watching tonight back in 2009.

JAMES SELLICK JEFF BENNETT James joined Encore in 2007 for our production of Billy Liar, immediately becoming a favourite with our audiences.

Since then he has regularly appeared with the group, and can often be found slapping his thigh as Principal Boy, a role he suits perfectly. We have always known he had a powerful voice, but he proved it beyond any shadow of a doubt when he performed in the role of Audrey II, the plant voice, in our award-nominated production Little Shop of Horrors in 2009. This role was a highlight for James, despite being stuck in the back room with a microphone and a monitor screen to see what was happening on stage.

As with many of the other cast members, James is also a regular performer with Exit Stage Left, playing roles such as Bill Sykes in Oliver, Ugly in Honk, and perhaps one of his most fun characters to date, Eddy in A Slice of Saturday Night - a role he reprised with Encore in 2012. He has recently appeared as Mitch Mahoney in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and in I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change - a show which James is looking forward to performing again early next year with a company in Saltford - keep an eye out for that one!

James has always had a strong interest in technical theatre and studied a BA Hons Theatre Production degree at Bath Spa University. He is now Theatre Manager and Drama Department Technician at King Edward’s School, Bath and is delighted to be able to extend his knowledge, skills, interest and enjoyment in theatre to pupils at the School. James is excited to be playing Jeff for the second time and hopes you all enjoy I Love You Because.

JESSICA WITHERS DIANA BINGLEY Jessica is one of Encore’s most versatile actresses, being equally at home with comedy or drama and including some stunning vocal ability.

She first joined us back in 2008 to play the role of Rita in our production of Billy Liar, quickly becoming a very firm favourite with our audiences. Since joining Encore Jessica has appeared in almost every production, along the way managing to play everything from a kitten to the title role in our award winning pantomime Sleeping Beauty. Who can forget her appearance in Hansel and Gretel, donning an amazing leather one-piece outfit?!

As with many of Encore’s members, Jessica also performs with Exit Stage Left. Roles include Addaperle in The Wiz, the title role in Cinderella, Queenie in Honk, Susan in [title of show] and Nancy the Nurse in the Rose Bowl Award winning production A New Brain, the perfect part for her as she is no stranger to the medical uniform.

Away from all these productions Jessica is a midwife at Bath’s Royal United Hospital. She often comes straight to rehearsal immediately after a long shift!

Jessica was thrilled to be cast in I Love You Because, not for the first time, opposite her long-term boyfriend James. The most recent occasion these two have appeared opposite each other being our Sixties musical A Slice of Saturday Night - we’re sure it won’t be the last!

MARK SELLICK NYC MAN Mark’s first role was in a school production of Grease, playing that well-known T-Bird they left out of the movie version, Roger.

He appeared with various local theatre groups after leaving school, eventually joining Encore as a ‘dancer’ (a term he uses very loosely) too many years ago. Past appearances include Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors, Marius in Les Miserables and more recently in various productions with Keynsham Light Opera Group and Exit Stage Left, including A New Brain which won the Best Musical Rose Bowl Award in 2011.

In the past 12 months Mark has appeared in three productions that he is massively grateful for the opportunity to be a part of; RENT at the Mission Theatre playing Roger, The Witches of Eastwick at the Theatre Royal (both with Bath Operatic) and the original musical Pencoweth (Music is Life Productions) at the beautiful Minack Theatre in Cornwall. He may or may not have appeared in Exit Stage Left’s When Midnight Strikes at The Rondo in July - the jury is still out whether four lines and half a song counts as an appearance.

When directing with Encore, Mark has partly contributed to more Rose Bowl success with a Best Musical nomination for A Slice of Saturday Night and a Best Pantomime nomination for Goldilocks and the Three Bears... Third time lucky perhaps?

Mark plays keyboards for the ever-popular party/ function band The Blues Others, with highlights over the past 6 years including an appearance at Butlins Minehead, gigging in Milan, performing for a couple of TV dragons and that Sinitta (off of X Factor).

EMMA WEBB NYC WOMAN Emma completed her BA Hons in Music at Bath Spa University in 2013. Having started her training from the age of seven at East Sussex School of Performing Arts (ESSPA), Emma has performed in many musical theatre productions, operas, gigs and festivals. Having completed her grade exams in singing and having had regular lessons in modern dance, drama and musical theatre, Emma carried on her passion for music and performing arts on the Music course at Bath Spa University.

Recently, Emma has performed in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Honk! The Musical (in which she also vocal coached), Kurt Weill’s opera Street Scene and The Witches of Eastwick at the Theatre Royal, Bath. At the end of last year Emma appeared in RENT with Bath Operatic at The Mission Theatre, and back at the start of the Summer took part in the second staging of the original Music is Life Productions musical Pencoweth at the Minack Theatre in Cornwall.

As well as performing, Emma also teaches singing and performing arts at various franchises, nursery schools, secondary schools and Stagecoach Theatre Arts Trowbridge, Monmouth and Frome.

Emma has been fantastic to have at rehearsals, not just by putting a smile on all our faces but by lending ridiculous amounts of time to assist with choreography, singing and advertising. We are also eternally grateful for her having so many musical friends!

Emma is thrilled to be joining Encore and appearing in I Love You Because this week.

She hopes you all enjoy the show.
