CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME I would like to extend a warm welcome to you all.

I am sure you will enjoy our latest production, ‘Half a Sixpence’, which is based on H G Wells’ semi-autobiographical novel ‘Kipps’, written in 1900, about one of the young apprentices in a rather Dickensian Folkestone Draper’s shop.

The original show ran from 1963 in the West End and then moved on to Broadway (one of the last London musicals to transfer successfully to New York before Andrew Lloyd Webber came on the scene many years later). It became more widely known with the release of the 1967 film starring Tommy Steele. Our version has been updated with several extra songs, but it still remains firmly set in the Music Hall tradition of Edwardian times.

I am very grateful to our in-house production team, Stage Manager Maureen Quilter and her team for making scenery and props, our Director Corinne-anne Richards, Musical Director Lee Tesdale, and Choreographer Tracey Dean. There are many others who deserve individual praise for their efforts in making this show so enjoyable and I would like to extend my thanks to the cast, backstage and front of house teams, orchestra, committee members and patrons, and as always, my thanks to you, our audience, for your much valued support.

CORINNE-ANNE RICHARDS DIRECTOR

KLOG became part of Corinne-anne’s life from a very early age as both her parents belong to the group. She joined as an acting member in 1988, since then taking part in every show except ‘Brigadoon’ when she was out of the country! When KLOG celebrated their 40th year, she celebrated her 40th show.

Included in these were her two favourite leading lady roles – Sally in ‘Little Me’ and Nancy in ‘Oliver’.

In 2001, Corinne-anne decided to turn her hand to Directing and, along with MD Keith Warhurst, compiled ‘Thank you for the Music’, a personal tribute to her 4 favourite composers. In 2005 she directed her first Spring production, ‘Calamity Jane’, ‘Half a Sixpence’ is now her sixth. This production has not been short of challenges, from only having a small cast to work with, to designing her own set, but everyone pulled together and got there in the end! She would like to thank Tracey, Lee, Maureen and Pat for their help and support.

LEE TESDALE

TRACEY DEAN

Lee started piano lessons aged 7 and has picked up many musical instruments along the way. At 16 he went on to be classically trained.

During school life he played for county orchestras and for HTV’s ‘A Christmas Carol’ in 2007.

Lee joined KLOG in 2003 as rehearsal pianist for ‘The Bare Necessities of Disney’ and carried on this role until last October when he took over as MD. Lee would like to wish everyone the best of luck with ‘Half a Sixpence’.

Tracey’s Grandfather joined KLOG in 1979 as Stage Manager. Over the years other family members have helped out back stage, which her father Tony still does today.

Tracey started dancing at Keyford Dancing School, aged 3. Dancing is what she enjoys most and she usually tries to stay away from speaking parts! She first choreographed a dance in Corinne’s show ‘Back to Broadway’ in 2001. She has been in, or helped choreograph, the last 24 shows.

KEYNSHAM LIGHT OPERA GROUP KLOG was formed in 1967 and the first show was ‘Trial By Jury’ in 1969 in Saltford Hall. The group has been entertaining the local community with it’s musical productions ever since. The group performs two shows a year - traditionally in April and October.

The age range is from 16 years upwards and new members are always welcome. If you are interested in joining as an acting/singing member, or helping out behind the scenes (back stage, wardrobe, front of house etc.), KLOG would be glad to hear from you. Rehearsals take place in Keynsham on Monday and Wednesday evenings throughout the year.

KLOG also has a thriving Patrons’ section. Patrons receive the group’s newsletters and have priority booking facilities. The Patrons’ secretary is Margaret Richards who can be contacted on 01225 400256.

KLOG’s 40th Anniversary Production, ‘Kiss Me Kate’ - April 2009

PRODUCTION HISTORY ‘Half a Sixpence’ is a musical comedy based on H G Wells’ novel ‘Kipps’. The original London production transferred to New York in 1965, starring Tommy Steele as Kipps and John Cleese, who played the role of Walsingham.

A 1967 film adaptation also starring Steele featured Lesley Judd, a future presenter of ‘Blue Peter’, as one of the dancing chorus.

A SYNOPSIS Arthur Kipps is an apprentice shop keeper in Mr Shalford’s Drapery Emporium, one of the most fashionable shops in Victorian Folkestone.

Ann Pornick is Kipps’ childhood sweetheart, but they don’t have much opportunity to spend time together. To make up for this, Kipps gives Ann a token of his love - half a sixpence, so that Ann can be reminded of him when they are apart.

One day, whilst in the shop, Kipps literally bumps into an excitable actor called Chitterlow, who informs him that Kipps is about to inherit a large legacy. With this money, Kipps tries to better himself, and leaves Ann for Helen Walsingham, of a local family who think they are a cut above the rest. Helen’s uncle, at the same time, begins to take over Kipps’ financial affairs.

Some time later, Kipps meets Ann again and soon realises that the people he is surrounded by have attitudes and values very different to his own. Knowing that it is Ann he really loves, he stops his engagement to Helen and returns to Ann, who he marries.

Kipps is careless with his money, and decides to have a large house built. Unfortunately, Helen’s uncle has continued to speculate with Kipps’ money, and he is forced to sell the house. Kipps has just enough left to rent a bookshop with accommodation for himself and Ann. A year later, they have started a family, and are relatively content with their new, modest, lifestyle. Until, that is, Chitterlow returns unexpectedly one day with some surprising news...

JENNY REYNOLDS

David’s passion for theatre was ignited at the age of 4 by watching his sister as a junior dancer in pantomime at the Bristol Hippodrome. His first major role was in ‘Scrooge’ at the Hippodrome as Tiny Tim. Aged 11 he was accepted into The Royal Ballet School, and whilst training was lucky enough to regularly perform at the Royal Opera House, including the 1999 televised ‘Nutcracker’ revival.

Jenny can’t remember a time when music wasn’t a key part of her life, having learnt to read music before she could read anything else! Singing has been a lifelong passion, taking lessons from age four, and branching out into musical theatre in her teens and beyond. Jenny has also been the lead singer of local rock band ‘The D.B.’s’ for twelve years racking up hundreds of performances with the band.

ARTHUR KIPPS

Singing being one of his favourite pastimes lessons were a must, and he was ecstatic when he got the chance to record at the world famous Abbey Road Studios.

At the end of his Ballet training in 2003, David decided a change of dance style was well overdue and was fortunate enough to be accepted to The Arts Educational Upper School, Tring.

David has also directed and choreographed several musicals and would like to do more in the future. He added “It is a pleasure to be getting my teeth into the role of Arthur Kipps and I wish all of my fellow actors good luck.

ANN PORNICK

Her first major role was Maria in the ‘Sound of Music’ with KLOG which was an enormous privilege.

She has then gone on to take a variety of roles with the group including Julie Jordan in ‘Carousel’, Marian in ‘The Music Man’, Katie Brown in ‘Calamity Jane’ and Pitti Sing in ‘Hot Mikado’ among others.

Jenny is excited to play the role of feisty Ann and can’t wait to be on stage again with the group.

MATTHEW BROCK BUGGINS

Matthew joined the group in 2002 singing ‘Summer Nights’ in ‘Now That’s What I Call Music’. He has appeared in 13 shows to date.

MARK SELLICK PEARCE

After joining the group for ‘Oklahoma’ and ‘West End Highlights II’ back in 2008, Mark is delighted to return for this production.

By day, Matthew is a Consultant for a Legal IT company. He enjoys being able to do something completely different when outside of the office, and is most appreciative to his family and friends for their support.

He performs with several other groups in the local area - his highlight so far has been singing extracts from ‘Les Misérables’ on a West End stage! Mark is a Graphic Designer by trade and has created the programme and flyer for ‘Half a Sixpence’.

MIKE EVANS

NICK STOTT

SID

This is Mike’s third year with KLOG. He has appeared in ‘Oklahoma’, ‘West End Highlights II‘ and ‘Kiss Me Kate’, but his highlight to date was playing the ‘Gambler’ in Harper Valley Heartbreak Express.

Mike works as a Technical Support Engineer for a software company and is looking forward to playing the character of Sid in ‘Half a Sixpence’.

CHITTERLOW

This is Nick’s 2nd show with KLOG, after having joined for ‘Harper Valley Harper Express’ in the later part of 2009.

He has performed with several other groups in the local area, including ITV Television Workshop and St. Stephen’s Drama Group.

By day, Nick is currently an ‘office monkey’ in Frenchay, Bristol.

KATE BRANTON HELEN WALSINGHAM

Kate is one of the newer members of KLOG with ‘Half a Sixpence’ being only her second show with the group.

JOANNE MEREDITH MRS WALSINGHAM

Before qualifying as a teacher, Kate studied Performing Arts at Filton College and has a degree in English and Media Studies.

Joanne tread the boards for the first time back in 2000 when she joined the chorus for ‘My Fair Lady’. She has been lucky enough to play two great leading ladies: ‘Charity’ in ‘Sweet Charity’ and ‘Lilli/Kate’ in ‘Kiss Me Kate’. Joanne has served as a committee member and Chairman and is currently the group secretary.

By day, Joanne works for an accountancy firm as an admin assistant.

When she is not performing, Kate is a full time primary school teacher and music coordinator.

WALSINGHAM

Steve joined KLOG eight years ago, playing in the band. Since then he has worked his way through various roles; Pianist, Musical Director, Cast Member, Director and now Chairman.

Steve said, “Every role has been a great experience. In this show I have a part that John Cleese once played. I wonder if he invented any special walk for it?”

KATE

A newcomer this season, Fleur has been interested in Musical Theatre, Dance and Drama all her life.

She has performed in many plays, short films and TV programmes including ‘Pool (No Water)’ ‘The Journal’ and ‘Skins’.

Fleur is currently a drama student at the City of Bristol College, studying for a National Diploma in Performing Arts.

TAMI FREEMAN

ABI CARPENTER

Tami has been treading the boards with various theatre companies for almost thirty years now and has been an active member of Keynsham Light Opera Group since moving to the area in 1999.

Abi has been in KLOG for the last three shows. Her favourite was the Autumn 2009 production of ‘Harper Valley Heartbreak Express’, taking on her first ever acting role as the downtrodden wife.

By day, Tami is a science journalist for Institute of Physics Publishing, where she runs a website about medical physics.

Abi has sung since 2007 and Dolly Parton songs were certainly different to anything she had done before, but she thoroughly enjoyed singing them!

FLO

NEIL QUILTER SHALFORD

Neil has been in KLOG for 16 years and particularly enjoys playing character parts.

His most memorable characters were Lazar Wolf in “Fiddler on The Roof”, Colonel Pickering in “My Fair Lady” and Baptista in “Kiss Me, Kate”.

Shalford is another demanding role as he changes character depending on who he is talking to, but Neil is enjoying the challenge and loves the show.

VICTORIA

TIM BOND

CHAIR ATTENDANT This is Tim’s first show with KLOG, after enjoying the last few shows from the audience!

Tim is a member of several other theatre groups in the local area, most recently appearing as an Evil Ogre and a Domino’s Delivery Boy in the same production - it was Panto after all!

He is actively involved with the Cobra Carnival Club in Wells and has a keen eye for website design!

CLAIRE JONES

SAM CROSSFIELD

Claire’s first show with KLOG was ‘Guys and Dolls’ in 2004 when she was a Hotbox girl.

Claire started dancing aged 4, learning ballet, tap and jazz. She has continued to dance ever since.

After travelling the world and spending the last 12 years in New Zealand, Sam can’t believe this is his 10th show with KLOG, since he has been back in Keynsham. His most enjoyable so far was playing ‘The Zombie’, rising from the grave and telling the story of Big John, in ‘Harper Valley’ last year.

LAURA, THE BARMAID

‘Half a Sixpence’ is her 10th show with the group and the first time she has had a named speaking part! She is looking forward to playing the role of Laura.

TRACEY DEAN

GWENDOLIN, THE MAID Tracey was a member of Junior KLOG (now KYTs) from 1994 until she left after ‘Godspell’ in 1997. Her first show for KLOG was ‘Music Hall’ in 1994.

Tracey works as a veterinary nurse and has been at her practice for roughly 14 years.

She has 2 cats, Charle and Sonni, who need a lot of affection.

Between work and KLOG she has very little time left over!

JEREMIAH, A STUDENT

“Onwards and upwards... Looking forward to a great show!”

TERRY STEWART EDITH, A STUDENT

Terry joined the group in 1999 in time for our production of ‘Me And My Girl’.

She has appeared in every show except one since then, so ‘Half a Sixpence’ will be her 22nd Show.

Outside of the group, Terry’s other interests include socialising with friends and family, reading, painting, theatre and the cinema.

TINA BRAIN CHORUS

Tina joined the group in the later part of 1999 for our production of ‘Me and My Girl’.

Her favourite show to date was ‘The Bare Necessities of Disney’ in 2003.

By day, Tina works as a Nurse at St. Michaels Hospital in Bristol, and is also a Mum. She is looking forward to appearing on stage in ‘Half a Sixpence’.

TRACY EKNER CHORUS

Tracy joined KLOG in 1999 for the show ‘Curtain Up’ and has performed in almost every production since then. She has also arranged the band music for several autumn shows, most notably ‘An Evening with Ella and Frank’ in 2004.

Tracy works as a Finance Officer in the Treasury and Revenues department for Somer Housing Group based in Bath.

ROZ DICK CHORUS

This is Roz’s fifth show with KLOG, having joined the group in April 2007 for ‘Summer Holiday.’

She has taught in Bitton for many years, and has produced a number of shows with her year six classes.

Roz has always liked the musical and film version of ‘Half a Sixpence’ and is looking forward to being in the show herself.

JOSEPH HOLLINGWORTH CHORUS

We were lucky to have Joseph join KLOG half way through the rehearsals for ‘Half a Sixpence’, after he heard about the group.

He performs for a variety of other theatre groups, and for his school, where he is currently preparing for his BTEC Drama performance.

Joseph is also performing the character of Brad in a depiction of ‘The Rocky Horror Show’.

MELANIE HOLLINGWORTH CHORUS

This is Melanie’s first production with KLOGs after being introduced to the group by Abi Carpenter. She was a founder member of East Bristol Chorus, with whom she still performs. Melanie also sings with the Black and Red Cabaret.

A Mental Health Nurse by day, Melanie currently manages a Methadone Treatment Programme for homeless people.

SARAH LOCK CHORUS

On having been in Keynsham Light Opera Group for twenty-one years, Sarah commented; “I must be one of the oldest performing members now... Oh dear!!”

Her first show after joining the group was the romantic musical ‘Belinda Fair’ in 1989, and her favourite production to date was ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ in 1996.

GEORGE KING CHORUS

George enjoys singing and entertaining the public, which he has done since he was a boy.

He joined KLOG back in the later part of 2002, for our production of ‘The Music Man.’ George has taken both leads and chorus work in shows and clubs for over forty five years, both here in the UK and overseas, especially in ‘Half a Sixpence!’
