Impact Report 2023

This report captures a dynamic 2023—a year filled with new work, a national tour, a world premiere, investments in diverse and emerging artists, and accessible community involvement in our revered and busy home, the Mark Morris Dance Center, and beyond. With your unwavering support, we met many of our goals and moved ahead with our mission to bring live music and dance to people around the world. After more than forty years of serving the community and the close of a two-year campaign, I remain hopeful for much more to come. I trust that you are too. This report and my gratitude are for you.

With love,

Mark Morris

Impact Report 2023

LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR As the year comes to a close and we look ahead to 2024, we want to thank you for being by our side. 2023 was full of remarkable moments. The company premiered The Look of Love, with music by the legendary Burt Bachrach. This and eleven restaged works captivated audiences on tour. At the Dance Center, our steadfast commitment to “dance is for anybody” guided our diverse programming for all generations. We revamped the We Dance! classes for our youngest dancers and their caregivers, supported emerging talents with SharedSpace fellowships, and introduced Movement for Older Bodies classes, dedicated to embracing healthy aging. Your invaluable support made all this—and more— possible. We warmly welcomed three board members and made strides with our Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategic framework, set to launch in 2024. We sustained many collaborations across the field, participating in the Cultural Solidarity Fund, Dance/USA, the Downtown Brooklyn Arts Alliance, and the Museum Arts and Cultural Access Consortium.

Impact Report 2023

As we forge ahead, rebuilding from the uncertainties of past years, we are grateful to all those who contributed to our BOLD campaign (2022-2023). Special gratitude goes out to the record number of people who committed to multi-year gifts, thereby setting a new standard of support. Invaluable for strategic planning, these gifts provide stability during both calm and turbulent times. As we set our sights on 2024 and even further to our milestone 50th-anniversary season in 2030—it will be here before we know it!—we launched a Bequest Giving Tool at freewill.org/mmdg that we welcome you to explore. Bequest commitments have had a transformative impact on our work, and we would be honored to celebrate your legacy through all we do. Cheers to the year gone by and all that’s to come. Thank you for being such an integral part of our bold and beautiful community and for your continued trust and partnership. It means the world to us.

A MINOR DANCE Supporting the creation and production of new works by Mark Morris for audiences worldwide is central to our mission. In 2023, Morris created A minor Dance, set to Johann Sebastian Bach’s Partita No. 3 in A minor for piano to be performed by six dancers. Morris, the dancers, and Music Director Colin Fowler rehearsed for several weeks leading up to the work’s premiere in August as part of the Dance Group’s debut at The Joyce Theater.

THE LOOK OF LOVE PREMIERE Morris’ The Look of Love premiered at BroadStage in Santa Monica on October 20, 2022. This evening-length work, which features more than a dozen legendary hits by Burt Bacharach (19282023) arranged by long-time musical collaborator Ethan Iverson, was co-commissioned by a nationwide consortium of arts presenters. Mr. Bacharach had an opportunity to see the work before his passing. In providing his music for this work, Mr. Bacharach shared “For many years, I’ve wanted to see my music reimagined in some kind of theatrical production – not just a jukebox musical formula of songs, but an original work with its own story and appeal. I’ve found an ideal collaborator in Mark Morris, whose brilliant choreography and deep musicality give songs new meaning and dimension through movement. Like a great melody, his dances evoke an atmosphere and inspire feelings, and I think that’s just what the world needs now.”

“THIS IS CHOREOGRAPHY THAT, IN THE WORDS OF THE SONG, SAYS ‘MORE THAN JUST WORDS COULD EVER SAY.’” —The New York Times

SHAREDSPACE AND THE LUCY BOWEN AWARD SharedSpace is an informal platform for choreographers in all styles of dance to present works in progress to diverse audiences and receive feedback through peer-guided conversations. The program provides a stipend and free rehearsal space to the participating artists, creating a supportive and creative community within our Dance Center. Fiscal year 2023 artists included Argelia Arreola, Winston Dynamite Brown, Cocomotion, Peter Alfred Elizalde, Donald Lee, Olivia Passerelli, Julia Ramirez, and Sumayyah Smith. Dance for PD®, our award-winning program for people with Parkinson’s disease and their care partners, premiered choreographer Valeria Solomonoff’s Gathering Together at our annual Dance Center Showcase. Winner of the Lucy Bowen Award for Inclusive Choreography, Solomonoff created a piece that combines her choreographic skills, her Argentine tango background, and improvisation.

Impact Report 2023

ENGAGING COMMUNITIES Older adults in our community recently expressed a desire for classes specifically designed for their age group. In response, we created a new series of classes for seniors called Movement for Older Bodies. These classes address the physical effects of aging and other important areas such as cognition, emotional well-being, self-efficacy, and social interaction. This growing program served 2,000 people in its inaugural year. At the Dance Center, we launched Second Sundays. Once per month, we offered a day of adult and child workshops, including a signature Dances of the African Diaspora series curated by longtime MMDG collaborator Patricia Hall. We offered We Dance for toddlers and their caregivers, ballet, Movement for Older Bodies, and master classes in Afro-Dominican dance, Afro-Haitian dance, Afro-Peruvian dance, dances from Guinea, and more. On tour, the Dance Group reached audiences across the country. The Look of Love engaged audiences in Alabama, Illinois, Virginia, and our West Coast home in Berkeley, California. Pepperland enlivened audiences in Virginia and New Mexico, and The Hard Nut made its Detroit debut. Repertory works Gloria, Water, Greek to Me, Suite from Orfeo ed Euridice, and Dancing Honeymoon were performed across New York State at the Queens Botanical Garden in Flushing and the Open Air Pavilion Theater in Chatham.

ADVANCING THE WORK Our groundbreaking Dance for PD® program received a newly designed and improved website. Adding accessibility and language plug-ins, the website can be translated into nine languages and re-formatted for users with disabilities. The updated OnDemand library, enhanced continuing education portal, and upgraded resource pages invite our diverse community to learn, explore, and connect with our work. Currently featuring classes in 10+ dance and movement styles—from Haitian dance to tap to waacking—the Mark Morris Digital Dance Center provides an important supplement to in-person classes and vital access points for people with disabilities, people with different scheduling needs, and those residing outside of New York City. We further contextualized the Dance Group within dance history and criticism by digitizing and uploading 300 text-searchable press articles to the Mark Morris Dance Group Digital Archive. We also hosted a number of accomplished archivists in the field as visitors. Archivist Stephanie Neel spoke at the Library of Congress on artist-driven archives in the 21st century.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT We support a more formal pipeline to opportunities for career advancement in Brooklyn and beyond. Our education and training programs focus on the depth and variety of creative careers in the arts, including performing, administration, education, design, and production. Arts Immersion engages a small cohort of local teens in a pre-professional arts administration program. We supported four fellows in fiscal year 2023. Our Teaching Artist Training Program and Music Accompaniment Training Program provide high-quality training in our culturally responsive curriculum. Graduates teach at The School at the Mark Morris Dance Center and at other organizations across New York City. Our partnership with the Harkness Center Healthy Dancer Initiative aims to extend the careers of local professional dancers by providing injury-preventative care at our Wellness Center and free classes that support injury rehabilitation. Our Priority Access for Subsidized Rehearsal Space Program offers Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) identifying artists early access to affordable rehearsal space. Through general and priority access, we provided 6,000 hours of subsidized rehearsal space to working artists in fiscal year 2023. Internships provide a paid opportunity for young professionals to work across the organization. In fiscal year 2023, we hosted interns in our Operations, Education, and Marketing departments. MMDG provides quarterly professional development opportunities for staff and administration and monthly continuing education sessions for our global community of faculty and instructors.
