1 2 20 REPORT L A U ANN

When I started this company four decades ago, I could not have imagined where we find ourselves today. I am humbled by the organization’s remarkable growth, intrepid innovation, and unbounded resilience, especially during this past year. Despite the challenges, it was a banner year – 40 years of the Mark Morris Dance Group! Our expanding global audience joined celebrations during our digital season, full of online programming designed for people of all ages. Best of all, after 11 months away, we returned to rehearsals and programming in the Dance Center, performing once again for local audiences. I am grateful to our outstanding artists and educators, talented staff and volunteers, devoted board, and most of all, to you and our vibrant community of people who continue to dance with us and support us these 40 years on. With love and thanks,

Mark Morris

Amid many program successes, we experienced a continued decline in earned revenue during the second year of the pandemic. Tuition and program fees were down due to closure of the Dance Center for more than half the year. We also lost significant presenter and commission fees from performance cancellations and postponements. This all prompted hard but important decisions to cut expenses related to reduced programming, including furloughs and permanent layoffs. We also made critical but unplanned investments in HVAC, safety equipment, and cleaning procedures as well as online streaming equipment to support new digital programming. We were able to end the fiscal year with a surplus to be directed towards an anticipated $1.7 million deficit for Fiscal Year 2022. Looking at our revenue streams through a multi-year lens, we have made a tremendous institutional shift to reliance on contributed income, a trend which will continue until we can more fully rebuild our earned revenue streams.

Four decades since the organization’s founding, the Mark Morris Dance Group is still evolving. The protracted challenges of this time have led to our continued innovation – moving from analog, to digital, to hybrid. Though the modes of working may have changed, we continued responding with deep care through meaningful education and community engagement practice and extraordinary artistic experiences. Mark continued to create – premiering two more iterations of his videodances. We were thrilled to return to performing live for audiences, both during the company’s first-ever livestream event and outdoor performances throughout the spring. We also advanced our online programs, delighting audiences throughout the year with our 40th Anniversary Digital Season, including themed week-long programming designed to engage audience members of all ages. We re-opened our on-site Dance Center in February 2021, reimagining programming to meet the current needs of our community, guided by our core values of artistic excellence, cultivating creativity, advancing access, and celebrating community. Whether you just joined us or have been with us since the beginning, we are honored to have your dedicated support of our work. Thank you. As we press forward, we are emboldened by our global community at our side. Onward!
