In support of the Malinois Foundation, The South Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce Foundation connects Utah’s greater business community around one common goal: helping veterans of the United States Armed Forces in need of support. Service Paws and Patriots is a three-year campaign with a goal to place service animals in the hands, hearts, and homes of the brave men and women who have served our country, many of whom who suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as a direct result of their service. For more than 60 years, the chamber has served as our community’s gateway to a thriving and prosperous state of being, and I’m excited to announce a new community endeavor for the Chamber: Service Paws and Patriots. And it is this event that I, with a humble heart, request your support of veterans in need in our community. Service Paws and Patriots is a three-year campaign with one simple goal: place service animals into the hands, homes, and hearts of veterans needing mental, emotional, and/or physical support. While it is hard to quantify the total number of veterans in need of this life-saving support, we do know that hundreds of thousands of applications for service animals are submitted nationwide by veterans and their caregivers. However because of the significant investment in time and talent required to train service animals, the cost of acquiring one is usually beyond a veteran’s financial capacity. In fact, it is estimated that 70% of veterans who need service animals cannot afford them. The City of South Salt Lake, our business community, and residents of Utah hold a special place in their hearts for the brave men and women who have served our country. Their personal sacrifice is beyond repayment, but our Chamber – through the Service Paws and Patriots initiative – endeavors to try.
