CHERRIES The Australian Cherry Season lasts just 100 days, spanning the spring and summer months. When buying cherries look for shiny, plump cherries with a fresh green stem and dark colouring for their variety. To keep your cherries fresh, store them unwashed with stems attached in a paper bag in the fridge. If you want to keep cherries around for longer than a few days, pit and freeze them—frozen cherries are perfect to bake with.

PRAWNS Abundant in Australia’s tropics, prawns are pretty much available all year round, but are most loved in bright summer dishes. Whether you like your prawns barbequed, pan-fried or tossed through a salad, nothing says Australian summer like fresh prawns. We recommend either King or Tiger prawns. King

prawns have moist, medium-firm flesh and a rich flavour, whereas Tiger prawns have a more medium-mild flavour. Both varieties are delicious cold and dipped in a seafood sauce or thrown on the barbeque with a hint of garlic—yum!

PASSIONFRUIT Passionfruit is almost available yearround but, being a tropical fruit, is more abundant and at its best during the warmer months. Did you know a nifty way to break the fruit open is to hold it in the palm of your hand—or between the palms of two hands—and squeeze gently until a small crack appears.

Warning: squeeze too hard and you’ll be wearing passionfruit pulp.

MANGOES From late September to April mangoes can be found gracing our supermarket shelves. The best way to buy a mango is to simply use your nose. A ripe fresh mango should have a fragrant tropical aroma and will be firm but give slightly to the touch. Try to avoid mangoes that are hard, very soft or bruised.

2. Mash bananas with a fork.

3. Add protein powder, oats and peanut butter.

4. Stir with a fork to combine­—dough consistency should be wet.

5. Add chocolate chips and stir through.

6. Spoon mixture into fun Christmas cookie shapes and onto prepared baking sheet. Cookies don’t spread, so shape them now.

7. Bake for 12-14 minutes depending on the size.

STEPS: 1.

Start by adding your foliage. To do this create two sprays and tie them onto your wreath base with the stems of the foliage overlapping in the middle. This will help create a lush spray on one side leaving some of your beautiful wreath frame exposed.

2. Next place the larger flowers into position over the stems of the foliage and tie tightly with twine.

3. Then you can tie on your smaller filler flowers or using a hot glue gun place them around the foliage spray.

4. Finish off with a beautiful material bow either at the top for hanging or as part of your flower spray.

Setting yourself a goal for the new year can be a motivating way to kick a bad habit goodbye, or welcome a new positive change into your life. Most people often have the best of intentions when it comes to making a change, such as “I want to get fitter this year” or “I want to eat better”.

These are both great goals to start a healthier lifestyle in the new year, and while they are usually filled with good intentions, sometimes people start their new routine a little too zealously. And often, this is where most of us go wrong.

But there are a few ways to give yourself a better chance of sticking to your goal in the new year and beyond.

SLOW AND STEADY Staying committed to your goal, especially at the start of the year in the peak of summer can be really tough. Often, we hit the ground running on January 1, only to revert back to our previous behaviour by the end of the month. This is not something to feel down or deflated by; you should feel proud of yourself for at least giving it a go.

When working towards a lifestyle change, such as improving your fitness, it takes practice, perseverance and sometimes a few bumps in the road before you get to where you’re heading. It also helps if you take it slow and steady, rather than overhauling your entire lifestyle in one go.

ONE STEP AT A TIME When it comes to making a positive and permanent change in your life, start by making small changes. If your goal is to

improve your fitness, make a plan to hit the gym a few times, and perhaps a walk or Pilates on alternating days.

REMEMBER TO CELEBRATE Rather than setting a goal that demands ‘success’ in a restrictive timeframe, consider setting a series of mini goals that will help you to make a lifestyle shift. These might be weekly or monthly milestones that support you to work towards your main goal, and help you to adapt your behaviour slowly.

Each time you complete a mini goal, celebrate your achievement and how far you’ve come. One of the most important things to remember is to not beat yourself up if you go off track. We can all experience those tough days or weeks, but don’t let the challenges derail your journey.

Most of us know there is a difference … but we all probably struggle to verbalise what exactly sets the two desserts apart.
