Marketplace S T O C K Y O U R F R I D G E A N D PA N T RY W I T H T H E V E RY B E S T F R E S H PRODUCE THE SUMMER SEASON H A S T O O F F E R. CHERRIES The Australian Cherry Season lasts just 100 days, spanning the spring and summer months. When buying cherries look for shiny, plump cherries with a fresh green stem and dark colouring for their variety. To keep your cherries fresh, store them unwashed with stems attached in a paper bag in the fridge. If you want to keep cherries around for longer than a few days, pit and freeze them—frozen cherries are perfect to bake with. PRAWNS Abundant in Australia’s tropics, prawns are pretty much available all year round, but are most loved in bright summer dishes. Whether you like your prawns barbequed, pan-fried or tossed through a salad, nothing says Australian summer like fresh prawns. We recommend either King or Tiger prawns. King

prawns have moist, medium-firm flesh and a rich flavour, whereas Tiger prawns have a more medium-mild flavour. Both varieties are delicious cold and dipped in a seafood sauce or thrown on the barbeque with a hint of garlic—yum! PASSIONFRUIT Passionfruit is almost available yearround but, being a tropical fruit, is more abundant and at its best during the warmer months. Did you know a nifty way to break the fruit open is to hold it in the palm of your hand—or between the palms of two hands—and squeeze gently until a small crack appears. Warning: squeeze too hard and you’ll be wearing passionfruit pulp.

MANGOES From late September to April mangoes can be found gracing our supermarket shelves. The best way to buy a mango is to simply use your nose. A ripe fresh mango should have a fragrant tropical aroma and will be firm but give slightly to the touch. Try to avoid mangoes that are hard, very soft or bruised.

Explore Subway Gungahlin’s catering menu to see all their delicious catering options, including hunger-busting sandwich platters, piled-high wrap platters, mouth-watering cookie platters and more.

INGREDIENTS Makes 10-12 cookies • 2 medium ripe bananas • ½ cup Primabolics Whey Ripped Protein Powder (Chocolate Fudge Brownie or Choc Peanut Butter) • 1 cup rolled quick or old fashioned oats • 2 tbs peanut butter, unsalted • 2 tbs chocolate chips, mini METHOD 1. Preheat oven to 180°c. Line cookie tray with baking paper. 2. Mash bananas with a fork. 3. Add protein powder, oats and peanut butter. 4. Stir with a fork to combine—dough consistency should be wet. 5. Add chocolate chips and stir through. 6. Spoon mixture into fun Christmas cookie shapes and onto prepared baking sheet. SIMPLY PHO Vietnamese cuisine really is made for the warmer months—it’s always fresh and light but packs big flavour. This summer we recommend the Vietnamese Chicken Vermicelli Salad from Simply Pho. It’s healthy, refreshing, and perfect anytime. Order up with a serve of crispy hot spring rolls ideal for dipping into this saucy salad— your taste buds will thank you. BANH MI HOUSE Not all sandwiches were created equal, and nothing tops a Banh Mi House Vietnamese roll for lunch! Let us spell it out for you. First, a deliciously light

Then topped with a sprinkling of chilli, coriander and soy sauce. It’s an entirely different roll game. STEPS: 1. Start by adding your foliage. To do this create two sprays and tie them onto your wreath base with the stems of the foliage overlapping in the middle. This will help create a lush spray on one side leaving some of your beautiful wreath frame exposed. 2. Next place the larger flowers into position over the stems of the foliage and tie tightly with twine. 3. Then you can tie on your smaller filler flowers or using a hot glue gun place them around the foliage spray. 4. Finish off with a beautiful material bow either at the top for hanging or as part of your flower spray.

WELLBEING

Get up and goal in 2020.

Each time you complete a mini goal, celebrate your achievement

TIPS FROM FERNWOOD FITNESS TO DRIVE YOU T O WA R D S Y O U R N E W Y E A R’S G O A L. Setting yourself a goal for the new year can be a motivating way to kick a bad habit goodbye, or welcome a new positive change into your life. Most people often have the best of intentions when it comes to making a change, such as “I want to get fitter this year” or “I want to eat better”. These are both great goals to start a healthier lifestyle in the new year, and while they are usually filled with good intentions, sometimes people start their new routine a little too zealously. And often, this is where most of us go wrong. But there are a few ways to give yourself a better chance of sticking to your goal in the new year and beyond. SLOW AND STEADY Staying committed to your goal, especially at the start of the year in the peak of summer can be really tough. Often, we hit the ground running on January 1, only to revert back to our previous behaviour by the end of the month. This is not something to feel down or deflated by; you should feel proud of yourself for at least giving it a go. When working towards a lifestyle change, such as improving your fitness, it takes practice, perseverance and sometimes a few bumps in the road before you get to where you’re heading. It also helps if you take it slow and steady, rather than overhauling your entire lifestyle in one go. ONE STEP AT A TIME When it comes to making a positive and permanent change in your life, start by making small changes. If your goal is to

improve your fitness, make a plan to hit the gym a few times, and perhaps a walk or Pilates on alternating days. To get started, perhaps select some fun classes like Zumba or spend time with a PT to develop a fitness routine. It’s important that you do exercises that you enjoy, and that you don’t push yourself beyond your limits. Sweating it out at the gym every day can be too much pressure on your body and mind, especially if you’re new to the scene. If you push yourself too hard too quickly, this can also lead to burn out. REMEMBER TO CELEBRATE Rather than setting a goal that demands ‘success’ in a restrictive timeframe, consider setting a series of mini goals that will help you to make a lifestyle shift. These might be weekly or monthly milestones that support you to work towards your main goal, and help you to adapt your behaviour slowly. Each time you complete a mini goal, celebrate your achievement and how far you’ve come. One of the most important things to remember is to not beat yourself up if you go off track. We can all experience those tough days or weeks, but don’t let the challenges derail your journey. At Fernwood Fitness, we empower women of all ages and fitness levels to shine. For more information about kick-starting your health and fitness journey, call Fernwood Gungahlin on (02) 6255 0991 today.

Gelato versus ice cream ... D O Y O U E V E R S T O P T O W O N D E R W H I L E E N J OY I N G A D E L I C I O U S S C O O P O F G E L AT O W H AT T H E A C T U A L D I F F E R E N C E I S B E T W E E N G E L AT O A N D I C E C R E A M? Most of us know there is a difference … but we all probably struggle to verbalise what exactly sets the two desserts apart. Rather than Google search the answer the expert team at Gelatissimo Gungahlin (located on Hibberson Street) are here to breakdown the difference for us. 1.

One of the main differences is that gelato generally contains less fat than ice cream (winning), as gelato uses whole milk while ice cream is made with cream. This means you can have more gelato! Gelato is churned at a much

slower rate, incorporating less air and leaving the gelato denser than ice cream. Apparently, gelato has 50% less air than standard ice cream, meaning more deliciousness and less air! Gelato is served at a slightly warmer temperature than ice cream, so its texture stays silky and soft. Because it has a lower percentage of fat than ice cream, the main flavour ingredient really shines through. Authentic Italian gelato isn’t scooped like ice cream, it’s served with a spade. Dig it?

LANNY MAX PORTER Reviewed by Jess If you want something with a little more artistic and literary substance to read this summer, we highly recommend Lanny by Max Porter. Longlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2019, this book is a stunning piece of work. Lanny is a strange young boy living in a small country town, where everybody knows everybody else’s business. But the town has stories and myths that will come to interrupt the quiet existence of the town.

A FRACTION OF THE WHOLE STEVE TOLTZ Reviewed by Mel Reading A Fraction of the Whole is like being at a dinner party where everyone cracks out their crazy family stories—the ones that are absurdly funny, a little weird, and totally unbelievable if you didn’t know the person involved. This book features a series of zany adventures as you follow two generations of the Martin family from small town Australia to France, Thailand and back again.

WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING DELIA OWENS Reviewed by Cassie Come to North Carolina. Explore the endless winding waterways that flow beneath green canopies. Let the natural beauty of the flora and fauna pull you into a world of lightning bugs and hummingbirds. This is a world that belongs to Kya, or as the locals at Barckly Cove call her, the Marsh girl. Feathers, friends, young love, and murder, it’s all here waiting for you, where the crawdads sing.

THE BINDING BRIDGET COLLINS Reviewed by Rachel A captivating blend of fantasy and historical fiction, The Binding imagines a world where memories can be removed and bound into books. Protagonist Emmett Farmer leaves his family farm as he is reluctantly drawn into the world of bookbinding when he is called to apprentice to the local bookbinder.

THE NIGHT CIRCUS ERIN MORGENSTERN Reviewed by Alice This book breathes magic into every page. Stories, characters and romance entwined so beautifully that you get completely lost, time passing without you realising, the descriptions so vivid you can almost smell the popcorn coming off the pages. The Night Circus at its heart is a story of love, magic and choosing to believe in the fantastic. A perfect escape for the summer holidays!

THE LIFE OF PI YANN MARTEL Reviewed by Kelly This book is not just about a boy stuck on a raft with a feisty tiger, it is about the LIFE of Pi. This book is not about religion, it is about having faith and having the ability to choose your own path.
