Fall’s cooler — but not too cold — weather begs us to be outside and enjoy it. Given the glorious color in the trees, taking your vows outside may be the way to go.

Cover it up

Holding the ceremony outside is beautiful, but it also subjects you and your guests to the vagaries of the weather. Plan for a covered area nearby, whether it be a structure or a tent, that can hold everyone. If you’re going the tent route, carefully consider the space and determine whether you need a large pole tent, which also comes with a dramatic roofline, or a smaller frame tent.

Let your florist, caterer and all other vendors know upfront you’re doing an outdoor ceremony and where.

If possible, have them visit the site so they can be sure to offer you their best service there. Try to think of things like where the staff can change and rest, where the kitchen facilities are, any electrical needs and if there are enough restrooms on hand for all your guests plus vendor employees.

Keeping warm in fall

Get cozy at your fall wedding by using these tips to keep you and your guests warm and comfortable throughout the event, especially if your big day is later in the fall towards the winter.

Hot beverage bar

Make one of your beverage stations a hot bar that serves coffee, hot chocolate, hot cider or other warm beverages. Give your guests plenty of garnishes and mix-ins for variety.

Also offer virgin drinks for children and those who don’t drink.

Offer guests favors like mittens, gloves or scarves. Scatter blankets around the venue, especially if your ceremony is outdoors. Larger items, like pashminas, make beautiful bridesmaids gifts that will be welcome both at the ceremony and after.

Set the mood

Nothing says hygge — a Danish word meaning cozy and comfortable — like a variety of warm, flickering candles. Pick both colors on your palette and colors that complement, and make sure to choose a variety of sizes and heights for visual appeal. Keep all of them unscented, however, you don’t want to overwhelm the event or bother guests with allergies. You can also choose candle holders that complement your decor. Metallic finishes up the warmth factor.

If you’re worried about so many open flames, look for LED candles with flicker and flash just like the real thing but without the heat.

Blooming One of the big ticket items for a wedding is the flowers. With flowers being such a large part of your big day, you need to make sure your selection is precise! With florists all over The Gorge, how do you know which one fits your needs? Here’s how to pick the best fall blooms that will complement your color palette and make your ceremony one to remember.

Be prepared with a good list of questions for your florist: • What flowers will be in season?

• What flowers are available that will fit my budget and color preferences?

• Do you have pictures of other weddings you’ve done in my price range?

• How will the flowers be handled, set up and delivered?

• Do you preserve bouquets after the wedding?

• Do you offer rental items like vases or will we need to get them from another company?

Get in touch with your florist early, at least three months in advance, the society says.

If you’re getting married

in a peak season for your venue, you may even need to allow up to a year. Bring any pictures you like and pictures of your dress and bridesmaids’ dresses so your florist can create a spectacular event that is also in your budget.

Add some seasonal accents to your bouquet no matter your color palette. Berries, oak and maple leaves, twigs, wheat and other grasses all make gorgeous additions. Shiny surfaces, such as metal and mirrors, magnify any available light. Warm up your venue with gold or bronze accents. Place candles on mirrored charges or on shiny metallic candlesticks.

Get creative with your lighting.

Use a variety of lanterns, either battery-powered or traditional oil or candle-powered to light up dark corners or line aisles or long tables (go battery powered if they’re anywhere they might get knocked over). You can also hang lanterns from long chains or ribbons to bring the eye up and cast a warm glow.

Arrange traditional electric lamps where people will gather and talk, next to a grouping of comfy chairs or by couches. You can even have groupings of lamps on a theme, say all Tiffany-style lamps, for more visual impact.

Walk through the venue with your photographer beforehand so he or she can see how it’s lit during different times of day and from different angles. Pick out locations for pictures and also talk about what, if any, lighting you will be adding to the space.

There are gorgeous options for adding tiny lights on metallic or nearly invisible strings. Bonus: Many are also battery operated.

Checklists! Very simple but easily missed. They are easy to pass off, you don’t have to remember every little detail and who doesn’t like checking the box. why did you choose to be married in the gorge ?

Both of our families have lived here for Generations. We were married in the church my husband was raised in and his parents were married. It’s a blessing to be able to call this place our home.

Advice from a How did you fall into baking?

Life change. By the time I hit my mid 30’s, I knew I needed to make a change in my life. I knew that I was the only one who could change it. When I was younger, I loved to bake. My husband and I were sitting around watching cupcake wars and I said, “What am I going to do with my life?”. He looked at me and said, “You should make some cupcakes.” We both laughed and well, now here we are. He didn’t realize what a monster he was creating!

What are the pros and cons of both fondant and buttercream?

I started with fondant but it’s not my passion. It’s terrible to eat and takes more time and money. Buttercream is delicious, beautiful and classic.

You can’t go wrong with a beautiful buttercream cake. You eat with your eyes first and buttercream is more appealing and tasty.

Can vegan and gluten free cakes taste as good as the real stuff ?

Yes, vegan and gluten free cakes can be just as tasty. A little different texture but tasty.

Winter Your colors and decor will set the tone of your wedding. This is the time to fully embrace the season and glean inspiration from your surroundings.

Winter greens

Wreaths of pine and berries are perfect for adorning the bride and groom’s chairs, church doors or buffet tables.

A sprig of pine and stick of cinnamon tied with twine around each guest’s napkin offers a striking table display and nod to the season.

Look for unexpected ways to sneak in a little green to really make a statement.

Go cotton

Cotton is a great — and inexpensive — way to decorate a winter wedding. It makes an elegant wreath or centerpiece,

Nothing is quite as cozy as flannel. While a colorful plaid is not a typical wedding choice, it packs a punch next to a white wedding gown or cranberry bridesmaid dress.

1. Have cozy blankets on hand for guests to wrap up. Think soft flannels and warm fleece in rich colors. Place them in baskets near the back of the aisle with a chalkboard sign reading, “ To have and to hold, in case you get cold.”

2. Offer hand warmers. This is a great addition to any outdoor ceremony, and your guests will thank you for it.

3. Prepare seat-side snacking.

Offer roasted chestnuts to guests as they take their seats. They not only keep the munchies at bay but create classy hand warmers for guests who would rather “hold” than “have.”

4. Add some cushion — to your guest seating, that is. Sitting on a cushioned pad instead of a cold chair can make a world of difference, and your guests will appreciate you thinking of the small creature comforts.

5. Rent portable heaters. If you are set on having an outdoor ceremony, you might look into renting portable heaters. The tall, sleek variety can be elegantly arranged to line the outer-rim of the seating area, or could be incorporated fully into your decor by lining the aisle with colorful ribbons attached to each.

Be cautious of the wind here in the Columbia River Gorge when considering alter arrangements, table décor, ect. Choose hardier flowers in consideration of the weather.

We recommend a toss bouquet to be used for decoration, where the guests sign in; that way you get double usage out of the bouquet.

Plan to keep a small fire extinguisher within reach of every lit fireplace or fire pit, and in a location convenient to any candle flame gone rogue.

Disaster: Your venue loses power How to plan: Winter storms have the potential to cause a power outage. Ask your venue if it has a backup generator before you book, and how

it handles power outages.

If your venue is without a generator, plan on keeping plenty of extra candles on-hand — which will provide much-needed light and create a romantic vibe.

Disaster: A massive cold or flu string How to plan: This is not an unlikely scenario. Winter is cold and flu season after all.

Wash your hands regularly and drink plenty of water.

Advice from a What do you enjoy most about shooting weddings in The Gorge?

Shooting weddings in The Gorge are always a win-win for me. I LOVE outdoor weddings, elopements and adventure. I also love being surrounded by beautiful scenery. Being able to photograph in a stunning scenic environment year round, that by the very nature of the area attracts folks with more of an outdoor, adventurous spirit is pretty perfect. Bonus is that living outside the rain shadow allows for less of a rainy season and a longer outdoor season for photography. So yeah, win-win all around!

Sitting down (or chatting by phone / Face-time) and discussing what they are planning for their wedding, how they would like it captured and general time frames to see which of my packages best meets their needs

Do you bring assistants with you or do you shoot by yourself ?

I bring an assistant with me for a portion of the wedding and can increase their time there, depending on the package that best meets the couples needs. I can always add time for my second photographer if the couple would like to have them there longer or remove the second photographer to help reduce prices. I try to be as flexible as possible with wants, needs and budgets.

Do you include engagement photos in your packages?

My biggest package includes an engagement session. Outside of that, I do offer a reduced rate on sessions for couples that have booked a wedding with me. I think engagement sessions are a great way for us to get to know each other a bit.

Forests, orchards, backyards and barn weddings!

Are there any photography trends you wish would go away and why?

Personally, I am not a fan of making images black and white and leaving one object in color. I say decide and go all in....one direction or another.

Although I do not edit images that way, ever, to each their own for what folks like!

Can you give our readers three tips that you would find helpful, in general, for their wedding day?

1. With or without a wedding planner, make sure you have an understanding of the wedding day timeline.

2. Make sure you have some towels to dry off the stems of the bridal parties flowers before walking down the aisle.

You don’t want wet spots on your dresses.

3. Delegate as much as you can so that you can relax, absorb and enjoy your wedding day. On the actual wedding day, make sure you have a point of contact, that you trust, to deal with any issues that come up so that you do not have to worry about it. It’s your day...enjoy it!

Dakota told me we were going for a drive and we took a cruise out into the woods. He pulled over to where we had a perfect view of the mountain (my favorite spot) and told me we were getting out to take a walk. We got out of the car, I started walking and I turned around and he had the ring stuck in his back pocket!! I started asking him what it was and what he was doing and he told me to turn back around!

The first look - We did separate photos before our reception and it was so special just having those moments with my husband and our photographer.

Nothing. I just wish there were more hours in the day to enjoy our wedding.

Homemade candles were my favorite to make as party favors, the extras you can take home and re-live your special day over and over again!

Just remembering that it’s your day. Some things don’t go as planned but, you are marrying your best friend and everyone who’s there is there to celebrate you! You only get that one day so enjoy every second of it! why did you choose to be married in the gorge ?

We chose The Gorge because we both grew up here. It’s home to us. We got to get married in the woods which was where we spent a lot of our time driving around when we were dating and where he proposed to me!
