YOUR A LEVEL OPTIONS GUIDE TO A LEVELS Some subjects are now offered as a two-year linear A Level, so examination of your knowledge and understanding learnt on the course will take place at the end of the two years. A Levels are assessed by written exams at the end of year two, although some coursework will be required. In subjects such as Art or Science your practical skills are also assessed.

CHANGES Your AS qualification will no longer contribute to your final A Level grade. However, the AS qualification will be similar to the first year of the two-year A Level course which enables some flexibility.

The new linear A Levels are being introduced over a period of time, with some subjects being delivered in the new format from September 2015. Some of you might take a mixture of A Level subjects which comprise of the new linear A Levels, as well as the current AS and A2 qualifications. From September 2016, the next phase of linear A Levels will be introduced and these are as follows: −− Design and Technology −− Dance, Drama and Music

AS In the first year of study you will choose your subjects at AS Level. AS Levels can be taken as a stand-alone qualification and are completed at the end of the first year. This year will be all about preparing you for your A2s as well as your AS examinations. Therefore, the step up to A2 will seem like a natural progression.

A2 After completing the AS Level year you will choose the subjects to continue with at A2 Level. You will be expected to achieve a D or higher at AS for each subject. You may also get the option of studying another AS subject in your second year. You will complete the AS after your second year of study.

HOW THE CHANGES AFFECT YOU For all A Levels you will sit an exam in your first year. For those subjects following the AS/A2 structure, this result will contribute to your overall grade at A2. For those subjects that have been reformed, this result will not contribute.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Most subjects will require five A*– C GCSEs including Maths and English, although some subjects such as Psychology require six A*– C GCSEs. Specific entry requirements are shown on course pages.

In the first year of the Academy you will be expected to study four subjects and in tutorials you will have the opportunity to develop transferable skills for life beyond college. We will introduce you to the idea of Oxford and Cambridge universities through conferences and visits, as well as prepare you for writing personal statements, volunteering and fundraising and help explore work experience opportunities.

In the second year, focus shifts to preparation and planning for leaving college and entering university or the workplace. For those applying to university, the first term is based around the completion of UCAS applications. Personal statements are drafted, edited and attached to your UCAS application online.

If you are not applying to university there will be opportunities to discuss volunteering, preparing for interviews and writing a covering statement for job applications. The second term continues preparation for university and job interviews.

You will also have organised college debates, creating and researching the questions and chairing debates with your peers.

You may also study for an AS Extended Project Qualification (see page 33). Based on a subject of personal interest, this project extends research and study skills to deliver an in-depth project. The final part of the year is preparing for the summer exams.

ABOUT THE COURSE This subject gives you the opportunity to explore classic literary texts from novels, to plays and poetry. You will explore texts such as Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, ‘Frankenstein’ by Mary Shelley and Margaret Atwood’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’. The course uses literature from a range of periods, such as the Romantic Movement and literature of the 21st century.

The course will develop your literary analysis skills, focusing specifically on your understanding of writers’ techniques.

ABOUT THE COURSE This course gives you the opportunity to explore aspects of both English A Levels; English Language and English Literature. In the first year of this combined course you will explore classic literary texts such as ‘Wuthering Heights’ and more modern texts such as ‘The Bloody Chamber’, by Angela Carter. ABOUT THE COURSE This course is a stand-alone qualification and complements select A Level courses. It is equivalent in size to an AS and equivalent in standard to an A2 qualification.

ABOUT THE COURSE This subject introduces you to a wide range of makers and designers; you will also carry out research and analysis of works related to 3D Design. This will be through a series of short projects at induction that allow you to design structures, concept architecture, products and furniture. You will then develop a further portfolio of work that explores materials, design drawing and model making.

The EPQ places great emphasis on learning in an independent way. You must have the desire and drive to take an idea and develop it into a project. We expect you to be committed and passionate about your choice.

UNITS COVERED −− Devise, design and plan the project

You will get the opportunity to further develop your technical understanding of materials and making processes, as well as your capabilities to generate ideas through drawing. You will develop your ideas through personal study in one specialist area and this will include both written and practical work.

−− Research, critically select, organise and use information −− Select and use a range of resources −− Analyse data, apply findings and demonstrate understanding of any links, connections and complexities of the topic

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED? Through ongoing assessment culminating in a final exam.

PROGRESSION OPTIONS 3D Design can lend itself to many different career paths including jeweller, car design, architect, product and furniture designer and model maker, among many others. This is also a good course to enable you to further your studies at university.

Extended projects are becoming more and more popular. They are liked by universities and can help to strengthen a candidate’s application.

They are phenomenally valuable in giving young people the opportunity to prepare themselves for university where they will spend much of their time studying and learning through their own research and reading.

WANT A CAREER IN ARCHITECTURE? Typically, you will need to study: 3D Design Studies or Product Design + Maths and/or Physics
