Dedicated parking spaces will be provided within the Holywell Park car park and teams will use the new purpose built changing facilities at the Loughborough University Stadium. Chief Operating Officer appointed Richard Taylor has joined the University’s senior management team as Chief Operating Officer. Prior to joining Loughborough Richard was Deputy Registrar at the University of Leicester. Prior to that he held posts at Durham and Loughborough. Richard grew up in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. He attended Durham University where he was Students’ Union President in 1994/95. He lives local to Loughborough and is married with two young children.
Chief Operating Officer’s Annual Report – students in the community Last year the Chief Operating Officer published a report looking at the positive impact of students in the community and the number of complaints received during the academic year 2011/12. The report for the 2012/13 academic year has been delayed due to the fact that a number of student disciplines are on-going. A delay in the publication of the report will allow a complete picture for the year to be reported. Further information will be provided in the next edition of University News.
Pub crawl incident – Loughborough Town Centre A number of residents expressed concern about a pub crawl that took place in the town centre on 27 April. The University can confirm that extensive enquiries took place into this incident and a number of students were identified as being involved. As a result five students attended a discipline hearing in June. All five were found guilty of bringing the University into disrepute and have been fined in line with the serious nature of the incident. These fines have been donated to support the work of the Street Pastors locally. Those students who are staying on at the University have been left in no doubt as to expectations regarding their future conduct, which will be closely monitored by the University. A number of disciplines are on-going in relation to this incident and will be concluded during the early part of the new academic year.
Alcohol free zone on campus An alcohol-free zone will be in operation on campus from the start of term. The zone will cover the whole University campus excluding all areas within 20 metres of halls or within designated outdoor areas associated with licenced premises. The zone has been introduced to compliment the alcohol free zones in the town and is designed to help reduce the number of drink-related incidents and litter.
New Community Warden announced The University is pleased to announce the appointment of Ally McDonald as its new community warden. She will also co-ordinate the work of two sub wardens covering the areas and support University’s deputy and sub wardens who cover the Kingfisher, Herrick and Ashby Road Estate areas. The full community warden team is: Ally McDonald – community warden Storer & Burleigh Louise Doherty – deputy community warden Herrick & Kingfisher Jayshree Lakha – community sub warden Ashby Road Estates Simon Wombwell – community sub warden Herrick & Kingfisher Emma Callaghan – community sub warden Storer & Burleigh Jessica Bergh – community sub warden Storer & Burleigh For further information on the community wardens and their work visit their website: www.lboro.ac.uk/studentservices/ community-wardens-service.html
Student creates sculptures for
Queen’s Park
A ceremony in June saw three new sculptures unveiled in Queen’s Park by Ian Tricker, a Fine Art finalist from the University’s School of the Arts. The 6ft tall sculptures were part of the Loughborough in Bloom project. Named Sound of Time, they play homage to Loughborough’s musical and industrial heritage. Ian designed and crafted a tuning fork, a nest of bells and a half-bell clapper. They were to complement another new arrival in the Park, the Great Paul Bell casing.
Voluntary efforts by students honoured by University The University’s community prizes were presented to four outstanding student volunteers at a ceremony held at Loughborough Town Hall in May. The University presents the TS Shipman Prize and Hannah Community Prize annually to recognise and reward its students who have taken part in community activities. The TS Shipman Prize is for students of the University or College who are considered to have contributed most to the development of co-operation and aid between the University or College and the local community. The assessor panel decided to award two students with the 2013 prize. Laura Church from the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering was honoured for her long term commitment to working with children with learning difficulties. School of the Arts student, Olivia Bauckham also received the award for her commitment to her work with disadvantaged children as part of the Twenty Twenty charity. The Hannah Community Prize is awarded to students to honour their acts of kindness or good neighbourliness. The prize is in memory of a former student, Mr George Alexander Hannah and the financial reward for the winners comes from funds bequeathed to the University in his memory. The assessor panel awarded the prize to three deserving students. Leah Downing from the School of the Arts was honoured in recognition of her consistent efforts to foster good relations between students and the local community in her role on the Loughborough Student Community Committee. A joint prize was given to Mershal Kuah, School of Business and Economics, and U-Pen Tan, School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences in recognition of their efforts to improve the perception of students through acts of kindness and generosity.
Professor Morag Bell, the University’s Pro Vice Chancellor for Teaching presented the awards. She was joined by Charnwood Borough Council’s Mayor, Cllr Sandie Forrest, other local dignitaries and the award winners and their guests.
Apiary created on campus Local bees now have a new home in Loughborough thanks to a project that has seen an apiary developed on the University campus. University staff have teamed up with local beekeepers to develop the site in response to the national decline in the number of honey bees. A secluded site has been chosen for the apiary and a range of traditional and natural hives have been built using spare wood from the campus. The University campus provides a perfect base for bees with its wide variety of pollen and nectar-rich trees and bee-friendly shrubs, a designated ‘fruit route’, two ancient woodlands and some species rich marshland. As the apiary expands, the University intends to look into the possibility of supplying its own honey on campus and providing an educational resource for students and the wider community.
Community Donations Fund Update At the end of July the Vice Chancellor presented the latest final round of funding from the Community Donations Fund for the academic year 2012/13. The funding was awarded to groups in the community supported by members of staff. In total 12 groups were awarded funding ranging from £300£500. The groups were: Affinity Trust, Fearon Community Association, Friends of Normanton on Soar Primary School, Intandem, Leicestershire and Rutland Beekeepers Association, Leicestershire Dyslexia Association, Loughborough Greenfields Tennis Club, Loughborough Rugby Football Club, Loughborough Sea Cadets, Refuel, Shree Ram Krishna Community Project. Monies from the Strategic Fund were also awarded to four community groups. The Strategic Fund is allocated directly by the University following a review of local strategic needs and is awarded following consultations with partner agencies – Charnwood Borough Council and John Storer Charnwood. The groups receiving support were the Marios Tinenti Centre, Ashby Road Community Association, Shelthorpe Community Association, Warwick Way Action Group and Thorpe Acre Residents Association.
