THE BIG KICK OFF
8
We have had a great 6 week preseason leading up to today. The team have been pushed hard in training, as well as a range of challenges in terms of fixtures plus a weekend camp away in Norwich. The group have worked hard on and off the pitch in preparation to kick off the league this season in the form and trajectory we ended last season with. We have also welcomed a number of great additions to the squad both players and staff.
Today’s fixture vs Stoke will be a tough one; It’s always a physical battle against the side, and we know we will need a lot of fight in our individual battles to come out on top. I am very grateful for all the hard work behind the scenes that has taken place for our opening fixture, its fantastic to welcome WSL sides Liverpool and West Ham to campus and ultimately see 4 clubs come together to help promote and raise not only our profile, but the profile of women’s football. and the growing support the university is giving the women’s game. Firstly, huge welcome to everyone who has come to support us in our league opener today. A special welcome to the new Vice Chancellor Nick Jennings showing his support for Lightning today.

FOXESLOUGHBOROUGH Gail and Paul Fox founded Loughborough Foxes in 1999, known then as Shepshed Foxes until 2002. For their first 15 years, Foxes played in local leagues, before being promoted to the FA Women’s Northern Premier Division (the 3rd ranked tier of women’s football) in 2015. After the first season they suffered relegation but managed a promotion in 2018 to return to this tier. Winning this Midlands Division One title was actually a club record for Foxes, winning 22 games and drawing just 1.
