CEO Autumn 2021 The good news is that we are locked in for Conference at Te Papa 16th-18th June. We have a great programme and plenty of members are very keen to be back in the room together.

As usual, the Executive will be presenting the Roofing Excellence Award, then RANZ Executive are also introducing some more awards, where the members will have direct input in helping the judging panel to choose the winners.

We will roll out specific information on these additional awards over the next while.

Jehan Casinader will facilitate our busy first day, where the Minister for Building & Construction, and Housing (Public), Hon Poto Williams will speak. We will have sessions on small business risks and benefits, legal advice

for members on liability when providing advice and reports, a discussion on roof ventilation, and information from the Construction Sector Accord on Accreditation.

Our Business Partners will have their Trade Show going, as well, where we can see all they have to offer. The COLORSTEEL® Dinner will be something different this year, where we have invited Weta Workshop to do their thing.

Roofing voice on the LBP Board

Coromandel summer success

RANZ Life Member, Frank Thomas, is settling into his new, additional role on the Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP) Board, having been elected in August 2020. Frank has operated The Roofing Specialists Ltd in Hamilton for over 36 years, and having him on the LBP Board, serving as a representative voice on roofing, is a valuable asset and notable achievement.

Peninsula Roofing & Scaffolding have had a busy summer, not only roofing in some beautiful Coromandel spots – like this one pictured for Cove Construction Ltd., looking out onto Matarangi beach, with Euroline Seamlok in Sandstone Grey from Steel and Tube – but they’ve also been providing scaffolding for stages and other facilities, for a number of summer events around the region, including the Whitianga Summer Concert (as pictured), which was held at the end of January. It is not lost on the team how fortunate we have been to be able to hold concerts like this and operate near-normally in these Covid19 times.

Drone usage and cautions A recent court prosecution of a drone pilot was a first for New Zealand. The case concerned a drone that collided with a paraglider, highlighting how important a cautious and informed approach is needed when using this relatively new surveillance and documentation tool. RANZ member RDM Group Ltd’s Sean Brandon presented an informative segment at the 2020 RANZ Virtual Conference on drone applications in roofing. This presentation can be viewed on-demand on the RANZ Member website portal in the Toolkit. Information on drone usage and rules can be found online at: aviation.govt.nz/drones

Conference landmark Integral to bringing to life this truly iconic taonga and work of art that graces the lagoon on Wellington Harbour were RANZ member sponsors ARDEX & Wakefield Metals (on supply), and member Aquaheat (on install). Te Wharewaka o Poneke is located beside Te Papa Tongarewa, where the 2021 RANZ conference is set to be held 16th-18th June, 2021 – and it’s well worth a visit to admire.

“We’re really proud of it and pleased with having been part of its installation,” says Tim Muelenbroeks, Roofing Division Manager of Aquaheat New Zealand Ltd. Officially opening on Waitangi Day in 2011, the facility’s sculpture-like roof was crafted from classic metal standing seam in VM Anthra Zinc, from Wakefield Metals, and ARDEX’s Shelterseal was used underneath as a vapour/separation barrier, with approx 1000m² of 1.5mm Dark Grey Butynol® used in the hidden and exposed gutters of its complex roofline. Erich Stocker was the install project lead, and winner of the RANZ Roofing Excellence Award in 2013.

RANZ roofing matters to architects In November and December 2020, RANZ teamed up with member sponsors Pro Clima, to present a roofing panel of RANZ Member representatives to a large contingent of New Zealand’s architectural leaders. With over 100 webinar attendees, our RANZ panel presented perspectives on the benefits of fostering an environment that allows direct collaboration with project roofers for practical solutions and feedback on design applications, and the importance of appropriate ventilation, as well as the importance of choosing a RANZ member roofing expert – a good start to a valuable dialogue for further development in future.

Thanks to panellists Michael Sentch of Project Unite, Hamilton & Auckland; Dave Strudwick of About Roofing, Wanaka; and Neil Gillespie of Topline, Auckland, for representing RANZ so well alongside our RANZ CEO Graham Moor. From carpark to campus After 20 years of planning, a council-owned car park in Tauranga has now been transformed into an 8400m2, state-of-the-art, multi-purpose teaching and research facility.

Standing on the high point of Te Papa Peninsula, the University of Waikato’s Tauranga campus building now caters for a thousand full-time students along with staff areas, multi-purpose spaces and areas for the local community.

The vision for the project was to deliver the first university campus in Tauranga, and in so doing, ground the project in a sense of place and people. Lobbied for by the community, the project was jointly funded by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Tauranga City Council and Tauranga Energy Consumer Trust, in conjunction with the University of Waikato.

Project architect Jasmax established a master plan for the precinct where the building

design and street landscape were integral to each other.

“The building is formed of three- and five-storey building masses, connected by intersecting atriums forming a crossroads of campus activities. Social learning and student services occupy the ground floor and first floors, and an adjoining campus area and plaza allow for cultural welcome and an external place of relaxation,” says Jasmax project architect and senior associate Jane Rickit.

The design stitches the campus building into a city pedestrian laneway and street landscaping where students and the general public can mingle, she says.

Hawkins Construction, the main contractor, engaged RANZ member Turfrey Group to install a multi-layered, warm roof system on the auditorium building and academic block, exterior wall cladding and membrane decks on some levels of the building.

With more than 40 years as a roofing company and roofing contractor, Turfrey was well-placed to take on such a large project.

The company’s roofing services include repairs and maintenance through to roof appraisal, design and roof installation using the latest in roofing technology.

The striking and prominent fabricated aluminium eaves, which wrap around the building from the high-level east atrium

windows down to the north façade of the roof terrace, were supplied and installed by Turfrey’s Hamilton branch. The Waikato business also supplied and installed the RoofLogic roofing system.

There were specific reasons for choosing this warm roof system, says Jane. “A warm roof provides a higher level of energy efficiency; RoofLogic provided both metal and membrane warm roof systems; warranties were provided on the full system build up; and RoofLogic gave good support and responses on technical aspects as the project progressed.”

Timing and weather conditions proved challenging in delivering the Derbigum membrane decks in particular, issues repeatedly overcome in co-operation with Hawkins Construction, enabling smooth execution of the design imperatives. Some of Turfrey’s Hawkes Bay team – technical supervisors and roofers – were deployed to Tauranga to support the project as it progressed.

As the building façade wraps towards the west, it solidifies with an aluminium rainscreen and Symonite aluminium composite panels, while the south elevation is anchored by rhyolite-faced precast panels.

Both façades are solid panels with sections of slot glazing inserted. On the west, slotted, glazed panels are inserted into the aluminium rainscreen skin. The openings offer glimpses north towards Mauao while protecting the interior from the low western sun.

The Tauranga campus has come about through the Bay of Plenty Tertiary Education Partnership comprising the University of Waikato, Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi and Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology, with regional agencies like Priority One, Smart Growth and Tauranga City Council also actively involved. The partnership worked not only with local council but business and industry partners over many years to establish funding – key ones being the University of Waikato, Tauranga City Council, Bay of Plenty Regional Council and the Tauranga Energy Consumer Trust.

Cultural engagement with Mana Whenua and the iwi of Tauranga Moana was key on this project – informing the design response with stories of the whenua, its people and the bicultural history of the region.

“The planning and form of the project responds to formal and informal learning space requirements, cultural planning principles being employed to allow protocols to be observed in both educational and public functions,” says Jane.

artwork which references Tanemahuta’s ascent to the heavens to obtain the baskets of knowledge. Altogether, these evoke the concept of a village of learning and engender a sense of identity and belonging.”

The Mangopare or the Hammerhead shark narrative is referenced in the exterior façade of the Tauranga campus, the shark’s unique skin made from thousands of minute teeth that overlap one another to provide resilience.

The façade, which laps and folds around the building, protects the campus activity inside.

As the façade moves around the building it changes to reflect the different orientations of the sun – thereby providing sophisticated sun screening.

The profiled black fins to the east and north are formed from aluminium panels that chevron up the building, sitting proud of the glazed curtain wall system behind. At each level of the building, movement is accommodated by bespoke inter-storey connections, the adjacent aluminium

panelling being carefully detailed to follow the mangopare/shark design narrative.

The lightly coloured north building is the focus for cultural spaces for campus and community use and includes the capacity for noho/sleeping as part of cultural education.

The form, materials and artwork combine to give protection for the programme of learning, meeting and social functions.

As a member of RANZ, the team at Turfrey works to the highest industry standards, with all staff trade qualified and up-to-date with their Site Safety Passports and ‘safety at heights’ training.

Three key concepts were developed with mana whenua: Whenua – founding the campus to reference the rhyolite maunga that populate the Tauranga region. Mauao is a rhyolite lava dome which stands at the entrance to Tauranga Harbour; Puwhenua to the south is an important boundary marker.

Mangopare – the hammerhead shark symbolises resilience and a fighting spirit.

Kāinga – a village of people and educational activity.

Three of the best Trifecta of award-winning projects by Auckland member, Architectural Metalformers.

The Registered Master Builders House of the Year awards rose above the challenges of 2020 and carried on, holding its prestigious awards events online with an audience of over 3000 people tuning in. Each year, the competition showcases and celebrates building excellence in New Zealand and the builders and tradespeople who make these homes a reality. Every year, the standard improves and the benchmark is raised – and 2020 was no exception.

Architectural Metalformers has every reason to be proud of its work on a number of substantial homes and commercial projects, which were recognised in the 2020 awards where outstanding homes around New Zealand were showcased – including two new builds and a renovation project.

The three projects Architectural Metalformers' were involved in were entered into the Auckland/Northland/Coromandel region awards and all won Gold Awards which are awarded to entrants who achieve 90 percent

of the available points and are judged to be at least 80 percent above industry standard.

In addition, two of the projects won Regional Supreme Awards.

Lasting Impression Taking out the Resene New Home over $2 million Regional Supreme Winner was a sprawling residential build in Auckland, entitled “Lasting Impression”.

This rural retreat is configured as a cluster of linked pavilions surrounding a sheltered arrival courtyard. The pavilions are positioned to allow the owners to enjoy views from multiple living and bedroom spaces, and to capture the sun as it moves throughout the day.

Covering a footprint of 2,400m2, the home is capped by a vast roof, for which project architect Hulena Architects Ltd specified Smart Tray Standing Seam panels in 0.80mm Euramax aluminium in Grey Black, supplied

by Ambro Metals.

The work also included seven garage doors, a helicopter hangar door, and seven massive chimney louvres in heavy gauge powder coated aluminium which were colour matched to the roof.

A huge number of hours and an enormous amount of material went into this build, including over 13 tonnes of material for the roof alone.

This project was awarded Regional Supreme winner, Top 100, Resene New Home over $2 million category award and a Regional Gold Award.

Architectural Metalformers worked closely with PSL Construction to tackle the various challenges that arose during a build of this scope, and this award reflects the team’s attention to detail.

Mid-century Dreaming Another new build where Architectural Metalformers was part of the team was inspired by mid-century architecture. Located in the beautiful, rolling countryside of Woodhill in Auckland, this 444m2 threebedroom dwelling was challenging in a number of areas. The roof shape was complex and included 11 valleys to accommodate the opposing vaulted ceilings and long sheets required. It also used three different foundation and floor systems due to the contours and different soil types on the site.

Features such as passive ventilation, provided via strategically positioned glass louvres, two fireplaces and a generator, ensure the house will have warmth and power during the frequent power outages in the area. Other interesting details include a restored 18thcentury window and a solid oak parquet floor, Egyptian relic doors in the main bedroom, and a pre-cast concrete entrance wall.

For their work on this build Allan Wallace Builders and his team won a Gold Award in the Resene New Home over $2 million category.

Vive La Renovation Architectural Metalformers was also part of the project team working on Vive La Renovation, which took out the Regional Supreme Renovation Award and the Bunnings Renovation Over $1 million category, as well as a Gold Award.

In this renovation, an early 2000s build was significantly strengthened, extended and transformed into a modern home. Work on the sprawling four-bedroom property in a semi-rural setting was done in two stages and included replacing exterior cladding and a complete removal and replacement of the roof, which required a large amount of custom sheetmetal.

The existing roof was replaced over two levels with Smart Tray standing seam panels in Euramax Dark Grey Metallic, chosen for its contemporary finish and clean lines.

The original curved design presented a challenge for the capping. After discussion

with the builder and owner, it was agreed to fully weld the curved cappings and powdercoat them. This involved on-site templating, workshop manufacture, multiple dryfits, powdercoating and, finally, installation.

A masterpiece of the welding was the 1.2mm stainless steel internal gutters including complex sumps.

Because the project had many complex junctions that required a lot of problem solving by the team, a huge amount of design work was carried out on site.

Builder Marty van der Burg says, “The major accolade has to go to Architectural Metalformers – the teams on site and in the workshop were extraordinary… they really deserve so much credit!

It is a Health and Safety management checklist that we use, without fail, whenever we are working at height – usually installing and inspecting height-safety protection systems. Its purpose is to make sure we, as ‘persons conducting a business or undertaking’ (PCBU), or contractors, or workers for a PCBU, are all working safely, and also that the safety of others involved in our work or at/on site with us is well managed.

As an added safety management measure, this checklist adds a huge amount of value for all involved, prior to any works. Once we have managed our formalities to be on site and have been inducted and are signed in, rather than just using our project ‘Job Site Specific Safety Plan’, we include and always conduct a formal ‘Take 5 Safety Meeting’ before any works commence.

The key to all this being an invaluable asset is, if ever it needs to be proven, that you/we/us are managing safety and safe works continually – you can formally show that you, in fact, actually have with this tool.

This is achieved by making sure that yourself, or someone else in the team during the meeting, captures its contents in writing and that, at the end of the meeting, all involved sign, time and date the Take 5 Safety Meeting checklist.

You really need to be able to prove, ‘yes’ we did have a safety meeting today and these are the checks we have done specifically, practically and competently to manage risks. You also need to invest in developing, as a team or as an individual, strong safety practices for working at height.

Doing this will give long-term, positive benefits for all involved.

Where did the Metalhartt name come from?

Blake and Tyler are fans of the durable American workwear clothing brand, Carhartt; their company name is a derivative of the popular US fashion label.

Constellation Bus Station For the last six months, Metalhartt Roofing has been engaged – on/off – working with Brosnan Construction on the upgrade of the Constellation Bus Station. A full in-house drug test was completed by all Metalhartt tradesmen to qualify to work on site with the Northern Corridor Improvements Alliance, managing the upgrade as part of the overall $700m Northern Corridor Improvements project.

Nick James and Darryn Jones are the lead installers on this site along with Blake as director. Sections of the old roofing were removed first to allow builders access to the framework for the extension left and right of the existing station.

The overbridge had suspension scaffolding for Blake’s team to lay the roofing sheets safely.

The specified roofing for the project is Roofing Industries’ Eurostyle™ Epic™ in

Colorcote grey flannel. The flatter roof areas are finished with Roofing Industries Trimrib®.

The structural curve for the Eurostyle Epic profile was first landed on the ground where the builders installed framing and plywood, and at this stage Metalhartt chose to trace a template of the curve with a large sheet of building paper to gain the most accurate measure of what was required.

The main curve in the design is not a perfect curve – there are three different radii in it. The paper tracing was supplied to Roofing Industries Waikato, and this product was produced faultlessly first time.

On Sunday evening at Auckland Anniversary weekend, part of the bus lane was closed for Brosnan Construction to crane material to the overbridge and to load the curved steel structure into position.

A challenge for the team was the need to abseil down the curves to install the vertical sheets, and it was opportune that Metalhartt’s Joe O’Flynn had a background in rock climbing and rigging, so was able to set up a harness system to allow safe access to difficult-to-reach areas.

Owing to the size and awkward shape of the curve, delivery of materials to site was challenging; the sheets were craned onto the overbridge for Blake’s team to install but this

aspect of the build required some improvisation to ensure safety requirements were met.

As RoofLink goes to print the remaining tasks for Metalhartt Roofing to complete on this project are: • 75m of bus stop shelters to be installed.

• Supply of all the fascias, which are being produced in 3mm aluminium and powder-coated. The architectural design specifies the fascias to be made in 2m lengths with 5mm negative details at the joins, which will then require an underflashing for waterproofing.

• There are several stainless steel downpipes to be fabricated and installed to support the gutters, which are now taking on more water due to the new areas of roof.

• Roofing Accessories are providing the curved flashings.

Due for completion by the end of June 2021, clear, precise communication has been essential during this significant project.

Collaboration between Roofing Industries, Roofing Accessories, Brosnan Construction and the entire Metalhartt team will contribute to improved services on the important Northern Busway.

On report What is your liability when you write a report on the condition of a roof?

Don’t know? You really should.

Members will commonly encounter requests to inspect roofs and write reports based on their observations. These reports may be for insurers assessing claims, homeowners looking to undertake repairs or renovations, or potential buyers interested in a property for sale. While this may seem less risky and less stressful than entering into and administrating an entire contract for work, members still take on risk when authoring these reports.

If there is something incorrect or misleading written in a report, you, as the author, could be pursued in court for various claims, including a claim for breach of contract, negligence, misrepresentation, breach of the Fair Trading Act or, (if engaged by a homeowner) breach of the Consumer Guarantees Act. Problems can also arise based on the information a report omits or does not contain. Roofers cannot fully exclude future liability in relation to a report they write. However, they can seek to minimise this risk. A lot of this has to do with getting the basics right.

Where to start?

Firstly, contractors should clearly record the scope of the report in writing. What have you agreed to inspect and report on? Are you reporting on the general condition of the entire roof? Or are you assessing a particular list of items? Are you reporting on the existence of defects? Will you be providing maintenance or remediation recommendations? You can also record any agreed exclusions, for example, if you have not been engaged to assess weather-tightness.

Not only does this seek to ensure the parties are on the same page regarding what they have contracted to do but also, if you are accused of missing something you were never instructed to report on, you can refer back to the agreed scope.

Stick to the facts There is no point in taking the time to clearly agree and record the scope if a roofer does not meet it. Do not stray from what was agreed.

Do not provide remedial recommendations if you have not been asked to do so. If you have been provided a list of items to assess, ensure each one is adequately covered.

If, however, for some reason you have been unable to meet your scope, be sure to include this in your report. If you required access to the attic in order to assess part of the roof but this was not provided at the inspection, this should be recorded in your report. Likewise, if there were any agreed changes to the scope.

Fit for purpose Lastly, roofers can run into trouble where their report is used for purposes outside what it was intended. For example, a homeowner is looking to undertake some renovations and has asked you to write a report on the condition of their roof. Your report states that the roof is in a reasonably good condition, but there are a few maintenance issues. Four years afterwards, the homeowners have sold their house and provided prospective buyers with copies of your report. However, since the report, the minor maintenance issues have significantly worsened and now affect the durability of the roof. The new homeowners

seek to pursue you on the basis that they relied upon your report in their decision to purchase the house – notwithstanding that it was never meant to be used for this purpose.

Contractors should be aware of their audience and the purpose of their report.

Include a clause stating that only the persons who engaged you are entitled to rely on your report and excluding liability to all other third parties. The High Court case of Body Corporate 90315 v Redican Allwood Limited concerned a pre-purchase inspection report which stated “The contents of the report, or any other work prepared by us is confidential and has been prepared solely for you and shall not be relied upon by any third parties.

We accept no responsibility for anything done or not done by any third party in reliance, whether wholly or partially, on any of the contents of the report.” The High Court upheld this clause on the basis that it was clear and made in good faith.

Bearing in mind that you can never fully exclude your liability, it is always important to weigh up whether the financial benefit you gain by undertaking this work outweighs the risk you are taking on. The fee you charge will likely be a fraction of the costs you will incur if legal proceedings are commenced on foot of your report.

Picking pitch Go for the safe and sensible option when re-pitching flat-pitched profile metal roofs.

Don’t take the risk.

I would like to start by endorsing the opinion expressed by Graham Moor in the Spring 2020 edition of Rooflink, encouraging members to carefully consider re-pitching roof structures when replacing troughsection roofs laid at 1° degree.

To me, it is more of a common-sense issue than a legal one. When I started in the industry, trough-section roofs were commonly laid to 1°.

Often these were sprung-curved over the apex, and we thought nothing of it. The spring curving alone was often enough to cause canning and ponding, and any rib traffic damage inevitably caused ponding in the adjacent pan. On top of that, timber tends to deflect with age, so as these roofs grew old and were subject to roof traffic, the deflection increased, as did ponding.

This resulted in many roofs suffering premature corrosion. About the time New Zealand Steel began offering warranties for Colorsteel®, sometime in the 80’s, the minimum pitch to qualify for a warranty was increased to 3°. This struck surprisingly little resistance from the industry – the evidence was there for all to see. The minimum 3° pitch has since been duplicated in the Acceptable Solution to the Building Code.

Now, if you re-lay a roof, originally laid at 1°, with a similar product without re-pitching it, assuming the existing roof met the Code’s requirements for weather resistance and durability, you are quite within your rights as far as the Building Code goes. However, there is also other legislations to consider, such as the Sale of Goods Act and Consumer Guarantees Act. In a nutshell, while the Building Code is ‘performance based’, those other Acts ensure someone gets a merchantable product that meets their expectations.

Note, the focus is on meeting their expectations, not yours.

If the existing roof shows signs of having ponded, which normally leaves recognisable signs, you can try and re-align that area of roof to prevent ponding. At 1° degrees you have to be pretty accurate to achieve that. And of course, any subsequent deflection of the roof structure, perhaps brought on by your own roof traffic, or any canning in the new roof, or even continued deflection of the structural timber members, can quickly undo that.

With a sprung-curved, up-and-over roof, my recommendation is to break it and install a ridge flashing and appropriate supports. Even in the malleable grades, new steel is typically higher tensile than older material, and is more likely to suffer from compression canning. Many new trough sections are also wider panned and high tensile, making them even more likely to deflect under compression.

The fact is, at 3° minor imperfections in the roof surface, or structure, are a lot less likely to cause ponding and premature corrosion.

The roof will be cleaner, dry faster, and will most likely be more durable than a 1° roof.

I believe in horses for courses. There are cases where it is perfectly reasonable to re-roof at 1°. But if doing so, I strongly suggest that you ensure the client knows exactly what they are getting, what the risks are, and what the alternatives are. You should also make it perfectly clear that a material warranty will not be available for the new roof.

In this way, you will cover yourself against the risk of an armchair expert, or a future building appraisal expert, pointing out to the client, or a potential purchaser of the client’s house, that the new roof doesn’t meet the current requirements of the Building Code.

Trying to save a client a bit of money is commendable. But you must remember, win or lose, defending your actions can be extremely expensive. And it will be you paying that bill.

The 20th of November 2020 was a longawaited date. I was off on an adventure that I had always aspired to. This trip had been booked two years earlier by Roger Martin – Six days cruising in Fiordland on a 90ft boat, fishing, diving, hunting and sightseeing… and drinking and eating, of course. Sounded a bit like heaven.

We met up in Te Anau on the eve of departure – some having flown in, others taking the scenic route by land. The team included Roger Martin of Martin Roofing, Frank Thomas and Simon Heaps from Roofing Specialists, Richard Vetter from Peninsula Roofing , Jordy Jones from Dimond, Brent Lawrence from Flat Roof Solutions Hawkes Bay, and a few of their mates… and, of course, me. The charter group was limited to 12, with 120 kg baggage allowance each. As some of the members weighed almost that much without any gear or refreshments, we cut the number down to 11 so everyone could take the accoutrements needed to have a great time.

Departure day was brilliantly fine, with the promise of more good weather to come – not something that can be taken for granted in Fiordland in any season. We were ferried by helicopter to Dusky Sound, close to the site of the moose liberation, and ferried from there by inflatable dinghy to the nearby boat.

On my arrival at the boat, I was met by a slightly embarrassed Roger Martin, who

advised me that he had dropped my rifle into the sea and saturated it. No worries, I immediately set about drying and oiling it, and deposited it in the warmth of the engine room. While I was doing this, the others were sorting out their gear and their bunks. My bag was not to be seen. “Anyone seen my Everest Treks bag,” I enquired. “Oh no!” said Richard. “I thought it was my Everest Treks bag, with the gear in it I was leaving behind. I got them to put it back in the van.”

This was a problem. That bag had my rifle bolt and ammo, my medication, and my spare clothing. A man cannot live on beer alone… although I was almost willing to give it a try. I made the decision to pay for another flight so my trip would not be affected. The others kindly agreed to chip in, so $1500 split 11 ways wasn’t too much of an imposition.

Good decision, I had the trip of a lifetime.

No one had caught a cray by free-diving before, but they were soon coming up from 3-4 metres, along with plentiful Paua. The fishing was a bit slow, but we always managed a feed of blue cod when required. Due to the good weather, we were also able to go outside the fiord and catch some bluenose. There were plenty of deer around, and a couple of short hunts allowed Simon to bag a tasty hind.

All this was cooked in the most varied and tasty ways by our chef. She was superb, and the rest of the crew were extremely amiable

and professional. They imposed a limit on anything we were targeting from the ocean – only what we could cook in the time period allowed was to be taken.

I was surprised by the fact that the scenery, history and birdlife we encountered left the most lasting impression. We did have a few hours of Fiordland rain that created some spectacular waterfalls that magically appeared from the bush then disappeared as soon as the rain stopped.

Although now one of the country’s most remote areas, Fiordland was once relatively densely populated as a centre of New Zealand’s earliest industry, sealing. Small communities were started, and the first ship built in New Zealand, a 70-footer, was built from scratch in a cove we visited.

The efforts of conservationists also date back to the 17th Century. Rat control and habitat enhancement was commenced then and continues to this day. Of all the rare and once endangered birds I saw, a close encounter with a Southern Saddleback, whose population was once as low as eight birds in total, remains a treasured memory.

Talking business Thinking about our own communication can be a bit like suddenly thinking about breathing.

But when the exercise represents a path to highly accessible business wins (and avoids unnecessary losses), it shapes up to be a really worthwhile pursuit.

If you are reading this, we are communicating. We do it all the time, wherever we are, so you would think we should be pretty good at this the most basic of life skills. Many are, but not all the time.

We have all had those moments where we say, “I told them to do this, but they did that. Sorry.” Why? We knew what we were saying, and they said they understood, so what could possibly go wrong? Likewise our customers tell us what they want and we give them what we thought they wanted, only it’s not.

Things happen and no one is perfect.

However, if you add emotion to the frustration of miscommunication, the situation can often go pear-shaped – sometimes a little, other times a lot.

Oh, and who else did they moan to about what happened?

RANZ provided a communication article to Master Builders recently, looking at how communication impacts roofing projects.

Not surprisingly the scenarios above play out more than we think. This ultimately impacts on productivity and working relationships. We could all do this better.

RANZ and Master Builders work together advocating on behalf of its members to achieve a better functioning industry. We are both heavily involved in the Construction Accord, and are working closely on an accreditation scheme for businesses to better recognise and give surety about the companies we work with.

Steering ahead with strong communication

By David Kelly CEO Master Builders Association The construction sector has defied expectations, with full order books rather than the anticipated recession. While this is great, it also brings its own challenges.

Demand is at record levels, there are shortages of skilled labour, and on-going disruption caused by the pandemic. We are still navigating choppy waters. Communication is now maybe one of the most important tools in any tradesperson’s toolbox.

The cornerstone for any successful relationship is good communication. A single project can have multiple contractors and suppliers that need to be coordinated through a steady flow of information. And of course, there is your client – often embarking on the most significant investment of their lives, and usually with no previous experience to draw on. Effective communication will play an essential part of any successful project and will ensure your partnerships endure for many more.

This has never been as important as it is today. As we navigate our way through this pandemic, roadblocks and unexpected delays are inevitable. Common obstacles and disputes can often arise through no fault of our own. Your ability to proactively communicate will help to reduce concerns, conflict, and potential disputes.

Experience from the Master Builders disputes resolution service shows that almost three-quarters of all complaints could have been avoided if tricky conversations had happened earlier.

Manage expectations Good communication at the outset is vital.

Setting realistic timelines and keeping those on your order books regularly updated and informed will mean that the bar for communication has been set high from the get-go.

Potential future lockdowns may cause disruption to project timelines, supply chains, and client financing. Despite best intentions, variances or delays in the short term may pop-up. Our advice is to discuss these possibilities with your clients and suppliers at the outset.

Then, if they do eventuate, make sure you flag them as early as possible. And make sure that any conversations are followed up in writing.

A well-documented audit trail may be important further down the track.

Tricky conversations A ‘she’ll be right’ attitude is a big risk in our current environment. Often when awkward conversations are delayed or avoided, disputes occur. The earlier you have your conversation, the more likely you are to have a satisfactory outcome.

Swiftly and effectively addressing issues is in everyone’s best interest, both from an economic and emotional perspective. Any delay risks missing the window of opportunity for improving the problem, having the issue escalate, or become misleading, thus damaging your long-term reputation. It may be a hard conversation, but it will only get harder the longer you leave it.

In our experience it is very rare for the issue to resolve itself on its own!

While these conversations can cover a multitude of issues, there are a few principles that we believe apply to all of them: Take the time to plan: Think through the purpose of the conversation; think about how,

when and where. Take time to work through the issues fully yourself before the meeting.

Often, after analysing the data, you might identify opportunities to improve the situation.

Know the objective: Be specific about the message you want to get across and what you need from the other person.

Manage your emotions: Relax and breathe before you start any conversation. This will help bring your stress levels down and also help you hear what the other person is saying.

Allow yourself time to have a full discussion regarding all the aspects you want to cover and the issues that might be raised by the other party.

Put yourself in the other person’s shoes: Allow them time to think about what you said, ask questions and respond.

Be prepared for bad reactions: These can be emotional situations. Don’t be afraid to suggest a break and come back to finish the discussion at another time if you think that will help (but don’t leave it too long!).

Focus on solutions: Try to avoid a blame game as you navigate what might have happened and how we can get the issue resolved and keep the project moving.

Be ready to compromise: Remember that these conversations are always two-way and require both sides to be open. Maybe most importantly be ready to compromise.

Follow through: Always follow up the conversation with confirmation of what was discussed and agreed in writing. A simple email can really help to ensure everyone is clear of what is going to happen next.

Good communication may not come naturally to all of us, but it will positively reflect on your business and on-going relationships. Your communication style will be remembered long after your job is finished.

Take the test We all communicate differently – this is a good thing. However, communicating with multiple stakeholders, team members, contractors, or whoever, on any given workday can be tricky at the best of times. Now throw something like a pandemic into the mix, and it takes things to another level altogether.

Let’s start with the basics, looking at the way we each communicate, especially under pressure. Understanding and knowledge are powerful antidotes to unnecessary stress and conflict. This is a short summary of a powerful, fast, and insightful tool that has helped so many teams transform their communication for better outcomes, more productivity, less misunderstanding and strong relationships overall, and created a better understanding of themselves and others.

According to this tool, everyone fits into at least one of four key communication styles under pressure. Some will be a mixture of a couple of these styles. This is a very brief summary, to give you some insight initially into the differences.

NOTE: We need everyone, so there is no ‘best’ style. Every style has value, and every style has ‘watch out for’ points.

• Doers tend to be high achievers and leaders, and they drive necessary results. They also tend to be impatient and insensitive to others.

• Thinkers tend to excel when they like their work and can think through all the angles and contingencies. They can appear to be combative, critical and sarcastic.

• Influencers can lighten up even the darkest of moments. They can be inspirational, understanding and encouraging. They can also be wishy-washy in their decisionmaking and seem impractical. They are often late on assignments they do not like.

• Connectors are reliable team players who look after everyone in their ‘tribe’. They are consistent and caring, but they can also be stubborn and non-supportive of pushy people and what they judge to be impulsive ideas.

Chances are you can already hazard a guess about your own default style under pressure or those around you. I highly recommend taking this quick course below, and rate your own style. Otherwise you are just assuming and guessing. It is far more powerful to know for sure.

Cyber Security – time for action New Zealand businesses are becoming more digital. And, although this change has been accelerated by COVID-19, it is fundamentally driven by the need to operate more effectively and realise new opportunities.

Going digital is a universal trend that isn’t going to change any time soon – and, it is relevant to every business sector, even if the extent and priorities vary greatly. Along with the significant benefits that can be realised by embracing this trend, there are also risks and challenges, with cyber security the biggest one.

The challenge for organisations, large and small, is to understand and fully grasp the breadth of cyber risks their businesses face and the value of the data they are gathering.

They then need to translate this awareness into action. Companies that are making the transition to a digital operating model have to make cyber security central to their transformation efforts.

Our challenge Compared to the rest of the world, Kiwi businesses are often smaller. We are also highly trusting, so it’s not a surprise that we are generally lagging behind in the amount of focus and spending we are directing towards cyber security. These efforts are often focused on basic measures, like low-cost, anti-virus packages and the odd bit of penetration testing. As the most likely source of any issue is your staff, or a trusted partner, these measures may not actually help you.

The same is true if you are targeted by sophisticated ransomware or invoice fraud.

Yesterday’s approach doesn’t work The rise of digital businesses, the mass adoption of cloud technology, and the increasingly complex network of relationships with customers, employees and supply chain partners, have all blurred the lines of traditional cyber security. As a result, New

Zealand companies are struggling to respond to the added complexity.

Only 29 percent of local firms evaluate the security of third parties, for example, despite suppliers and business partners being the fastest-growing source for cyber attacks.

Likewise, employees were the single largest source of cyber security breaches – yet organisations still focus on external threats.

Rather than trying to ring-fence your organisation, businesses need to develop a proactive security approach across your entire digital presence. That means holding suppliers accountable for breaches, addressing the risk from employees, focusing your investment, and treating customer data privacy as a competitive advantage.

Every organisation’s approach to cyber security has to begin with understanding your risk profile – what does your organisation do, and how does a compromise from losing systems or data impact your business? It’s critical you start by identifying what is important to you from a business, not technology perspective. While the likelihood of something happening is hard to determine, the impact is very real and is something you can work out.

Also, as the volume of attacks focused on New Zealand continues to increase, it would be foolhardy to think it will not happen to you. If you start here – right now – you can develop a strategy to protect your information assets by focusing your investment effectively in order to manage your risk; ultimately delivering you a cyber resilient capability that allows you to quickly detect when things go wrong, so you can successfully respond and recover.

How to get started • Understand your context. Treat your systems and data as the information assets they are. Focus on determining what business functions and information are critically important to you and highly dependent on your technology. Also, consider the value an attacker may place on them – in particular, customer data, credit card information, cloud resources and internet bandwidth, which are all highly valued. Leaps in technology hold great promise for contending with seemingly intractable cyber threats. Yet, the spotlight on technological advances can dim the focus on the roles, competencies and training of people – often a neglected, although very effective, defence. We’re seeing this start to change, however. You don’t need to become a cyber security expert, but you do need to understand the basics and make sure any staff members that may be targeted, or are responsible for areas that are important to your cyber security, are appropriately educated. Get advice, particularly if you don’t understand what you need to do.

• Engage your stakeholders. Cyber security is a team sport. Make sure you engage your executive and board, as well as your suppliers and partners. Set expectations, and make sure you are all working together. You could reference the New Zealand Institute of Directors

Feeling positively busy In these uncertain times, seize the day, whenever an opportunity presents itself. And let’s find strength from the amazing people we have within our own community.

Well, 2021 has certainly started off busy, so I am feeling hopeful for a great year for roofing and construction. I know we all complain we are too busy and can’t get everything done, but I am reminding myself daily that at least we are able to be busy, living our lives relatively normally, compared to the rest of the world.

On that note of positivity, I remain ever hopeful that we will be able to meet up in Wellington in June at the RANZ conference.

I know we all missed coming together last year. This year we will be once again offering two scholarship places to attend the RANZ conference in Wellington, and therefore attend the Women in Roofing AGM and sessions.

We offered this scholarship last year and, although we did not have a conference, those

winners will be eligible to attend this year.

Therefore, we should have four great women attending for the first time. We will be emailing out the information and application forms in the coming weeks. But just a reminder, to be eligible to apply, you need to be a NZWiR member and you must not have attended the conference before.

A lot of our branches were able to meet up in late 2020, to catch up in person. I know all of our branch leaders are busy planning meetings, fundraising activities, and educational events for the 2021 year. I urge you all to make the most of these opportunities, as unfortunately, in this current climate, we need to seize the day when we can, just in case our Covid-19 circumstances change.

So when you see an invite, despite your busy schedule and endless to do list, take the time to go to a NZWiR event – you won’t regret it. Do the basics, but don’t just do the basic!

For basic controls, the CERT Critical Controls is a good place to start (https:// www.cert.govt.nz/it-specialists/ critical-controls/10-critical-controls/).

Again, their prioritisation and effectiveness depends on you, but multi-factor authentication and good password management are never bad things to do.

As you get a better understanding of your specific priorities the NIST and NZISM are freely available control catalogues. Again, the nature of your business and the technology you use is key to determining what you do. For example, if you are heavily cloud-based, then controls available from your cloud provider may be the first thing you should do.

• Prepare to respond. No matter how effectively you invest in protecting your

information assets, it’s almost impossible to keep a determined attacker out, or avoid every human error. Ideally, any organisation (big or small) should have a cyber response plan, and be ready to initiate it. However, we have found that many organisations in New Zealand don’t have a plan, or they view a security breach as any another technology incident.

Cyber security must be recognised as an enterprise-wide priority, requiring the active engagement of all internal stakeholders, from the business to risk and compliance, right up to the board of directors. Our experience tells us that cyber incidents are markedly different in their causes, impacts and treatments. We know the speed of detection of an incident, and the way an organisation responds and recovers, can be the difference between staying in business, or becoming another statistic.

Shireen opens the conversation by saying that the future of work will require inclusivity, flexibility, and a sense of purpose to thrive. “There has been much talk in the media recently about Perpetual Guardian’s successful four-day working week experiment. What does this have to do with the future of work, you may ask?”

Inclusivity There’s a well known saying ‘diversity is being invited to the party, inclusion is being invited to dance’. Inclusion comes in different forms but, at its heart, inclusivity is the notion that people matter. It’s trust and respect for each other, regardless of gender, race, age, ethnicity, and sexuality, that is key to enjoying the dance and the party.

It’s a feeling of belonging for everyone.

Evidence has shown that a sense of belonging raises productivity and creativity. Taking a linear approach to inclusion will not. A multi-dimensional approach is required to yield the benefits that diversity brings. Our identity is much more than the labels that we have for each other.

Flexibility Giving staff the flexibility to work a shorter week shows trust and respect. Think of a time when you were valued and trusted, and how you responded. Creating flexible workplaces communicates value to everyone, which increases motivation, synergy and productivity.

A common purpose Many have heard about the 2018 cave rescue of the 12 boys and their soccer coach in Chiang Rai. It remains a miraculous story of courage, survival and creativity in the midst of impossible odds.

A common purpose focused every member of the local and global team – they wanted to get everyone out alive. While everyone had different roles and alternate ways of approaching the problem, it was a common purpose that united the team to achieve their mission. It wasn’t their differences that were reported, but their common vision, purpose and focus. The experience, nationality, skills, and knowledge of each individual in the team faded into the background as their common vision, purpose and focus drove them to trust each other and work towards it.

People can do amazing things if they’re empowered, equipped and harnessed together with a common vision and goal, and given the opportunity to make contributions.

RANZ Member movements We have seen some of our members’ businesses sold, with the new owners becoming members, or waiting to meet our membership criteria. We have also seen some roofing companies leave the industry for business or retirement reasons. One has ceased trading altogether.

There are plenty of new members, which is great news for us and the industry as a whole, plus some existing members are expanding. Most new members have joined in order to lift their credibility and to better equip themselves and enhance their professionalism.

On average, it is a two-month process to be accepted for RANZ membership, when a business meets the criteria. We collect and assess H&S, supplier references, customer references, a work portfolio, insurances, LBPs, industry history, company approach to training and industry knowledge. It is definitely not a tick-box approach.

Q Where are you based?

A Auckland.

Q Years in roofing?

A Two years.

Q How did you get started in roofing?

A I returned from working in Australia and was offered the role at Thermakraft, which is where it all began.

Q Family nucleus?

A Married with three children… three daughters at that!

Q What motivates you?

A Making a positive difference every day and helping people to grow and develop.

Q Favourite movie?

A I have the concentration of a goldfish, so tend to watch more sport and Netflix series than movies. That said, you can’t go wrong with any film with Robert De Niro in it, like Goodfellas, Casino, The Deer Hunter, etc.

Q Favourite brew o’ beer or wine?

A I’m not a beer drinker, as such, so Grey Goose Vodka, or a fine single malt whiskey, such as Lark from Tasmania, or one of the many fine Japanese whiskeys.

Q What do you do day to day?

A I’m the General Manager of Sales and Marketing for Thermakraft, covering New Zealand and Australia.

Q What’s on my playlist?

A Pretty much everything, from Eminem to electronic dance, and rock and roll to country. I was a radio and club DJ in my younger years, so have a very eclectic taste in music.

Q Favourite products/brand? Why? A It would be remiss of me not to say Thermakraft products. Consumer products would be Apple for their pure simplicity and ability to connect and link to anything.

Q What makes a top roofer?

A Someone who is passionate about doing a good job, running a good company, developing their people, and cares that their customer is getting the best service and delivery.

Q Favourite roof?

A Sydney Opera House, especially the story behind the construction of the overall building.

Q Where will roofing be in 20 years?

A There is so much innovation in the roof space coming through – from product development to how the roofs are made and installed. It really could go anywhere it wants to, as things are developing so quickly. Naturally, Covid has potentially slowed down the overseas influence, with trade shows and fairs being cancelled, but it continues to develop outside all of that.

Q Favourite beach?

A I’m not a big beach holiday person, but favourites from travelling around would be: Venice Beach, Santa Monica, Whitehaven in Queensland, Bondi Beach, and for New Zealand beaches,
