Reflections

on the future of ageing

Since joining ECH earlier this year, I’ve spent time visiting our communities, sitting at kitchen tables, walking through villages and listening to clients, residents and staff. What has stood out is not one single perspective, but the diversity of experiences and what ageing means to different people.

A consistent theme in these conversations is the importance of inclusion, choice and respect.

People want to remain involved in decisions about their lives in ways that feel right for them. Ageing well looks different for everyone. For some, it’s about staying active and socially connected. For others, it’s about feeling secure, supported and understood. Independence, too, means different things to different people, and accepting support can often be a way of maintaining confidence and control.

I also hear a strong desire for care that feels connected and simple. When support is coordinated and familiar, it removes unnecessary stress and allows people to focus on living their lives. Continuity matters, particularly during times of change.

In my short time at ECH, I’ve seen much to be optimistic about: the dedication of our staff, the openness of our community and the strength of the connections across our services. Our role is to listen carefully, adapt thoughtfully and walk alongside people, recognising that every journey is different.

Aged care reform : what’s changing for people living at home

Australia’s aged care system is undergoing major reform, driven by growing demand for home-based support and stronger expectations around quality, safety and accountability. The introduction of the Support at Home program, alongside new aged care legislation and updated quality standards, marks one of the most significant shifts in how home care is delivered.

At the centre of these changes is a move away from standard service models towards care that is more personalised and responsive to change. For older people, this means support that better reflects their health needs, daily routines and personal goals, and adjusts as circumstances evolve.

From a provider perspective, the reforms place greater emphasis on care planning, clinical oversight and clear communication with clients and families. At ECH, Care Partners have been working closely with clients to review existing supports and explain what the new framework means in practice, helping people make informed decisions about their care.

While the system continues to change, ECH’s focus remains clear: supporting older Australians to live safely, confidently and well at home.

Mary’s green thumb is helping a small community to

flourish Mary’s love of gardening began at the tender age of seven, admiring her neighbour’s row of bright red geraniums.

Offered a cutting, she skipped the instructions to put it in water and planted it straight into the ground. It grew and she was hooked.

Investing time and effort in thorough soil preparation will reap the best rewards.

Enrich the soil with Dynamic Lifter and other well-aged manures to improve soil structure, boost nutrient availability and encourage beneficial microbial activity.

As an adult, Mary created a garden filled with colour and character, featuring a sweeping, rambling assortment of blooms with distinct seasonal palettes, a generous herb patch and pockets of vegetables nestled among flowers.

“I loved my garden,” she says. “It was a mass of colour, it was full and it was beautiful.”

Leaving that garden behind was one of the most difficult parts of her transition to ECH Crichton Court. After a significant health setback, and with family living interstate and overseas, Mary’s daughters, Clare and Emma, and son, Damien, were keen to ensure she had the safety and support of a community environment. They encouraged her to visit the 19-unit assisted-living site in Henley Beach.

During her first visit, Mary noticed the courtyard space she could call her own, already softened by the graceful ferns spilling over from her neighbour Marie’s garden; a sign that someone with a shared love of plants lived just next door. Beyond her unit, the beautifully maintained gardens and landscaping made the whole village feel welcoming, including the raised vegetable beds and the thriving community garden, which offered space for her to keep her hands in the soil. And right by her front door, she spotted a ‘Just Joey’ rose, her mother’s favourite.

Settling into her new home was made easier thanks to the team at Crichton Court. “The staff are beautiful, they have a great sense of humour and there’s a lot of laughter. And gardening, of course.

Helping people out in their areas gave me purpose.”

As she transformed her own courtyard into a green oasis, filled with her favourite pots from her previous home, Mary also began tending the shared garden beds on the central lawn. She works with ECH horticulturist Dean and fellow resident Eric to prepare the soil, plant seasonal vegetables, collect seeds, plant colourful zinnias and share produce with the keen cooks in the village.

Mary generously offers her gardening expertise, helping residents with their own courtyards, including her neighbour, Marie, whose plants were the first glimpse of greenery Mary spotted when she moved in. As Marie’s eyesight declined, Mary offered to help maintain her beautiful courtyard.

“It’s still her garden, not mine,” she insists. “I’m just keeping it looking the way she loves.”

Mary has also embraced the broader ECH community, regularly joining the garden group, exercise classes and wellbeing programs at the ECH Henley Beach Wellness Centre. She speaks with genuine affection about her care partner, the physiotherapists and the gardeners who keep Crichton Court thriving. “Everyone is lovely. They really help people out.”

For her daughter Clare, knowing that Mary is surrounded by support and people who understand and value her passions brings peace of mind. And for residents and staff alike, Mary’s gardening is more than a pastime; it’s a daily reminder of the beauty and connection that can come from one person’s care.

“I just love making things beautiful,” Mary says.

“And if it brings someone else a little joy too, that’s even better.”

Gardens and Costumes At ECH, we believe that staying inspired and connected is the secret to living well. This year has already been a whirlwind of activity, with our valued partnerships opening doors to some of South Australia’s most exclusive cultural experiences, provided entirely free of charge for our clients and residents.

To mark our eighth year of sponsorship, ECH hosted three special activations with the Adelaide Festival for clients and residents. Guests enjoyed morning teas, lunches and private meet-and-greets with directors and performers from some of the shows, gaining a rare behind-the-scenes look at world-class opera, classical music and contemporary dance.

Therapeutic horticulturist Sally-Anne Fowles hosted a sensory session at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens.

Guests were led on a journey through the world of herbs, learning about ancient folklore and rare species. They were delighted to roll up their sleeves and plant herbs to take home, creating a lovely memento from the day.

The energy was electric at the ABC Building as ECH guests enjoyed a private wardrobe tour with the State Theatre Company South Australia. Exploring the newly designed costume storage, our clients and residents had a close-up look at iconic pieces from past productions while hearing incredible stories of craftsmanship and creativity from the wardrobe team.

From gardens to stages, these experiences created moments of joy, curiosity and connection, all part of ECH’s commitment to helping our clients and residents get MORE out of life.

RESIDENT STORY

A Smaller Shed, a Bigger

Community Des has spent a lifetime building things. Today, he’s still doing what he loves. A former shipwright who began his trade straight out of school in Whyalla, Des built not only ships, but a lifelong passion for fixing, making and helping others.

At his former home in Elizabeth, that passion filled a large backyard shed, packed with tools and projects. Downsizing to ECH Encore in Modbury with his wife, Sandra, meant leaving that space behind, but not the skills or the joy it brought.

“Space hasn’t made any difference,” Des says. “With the right set-up and tools, anything is possible. I can do as much here as I could do at home.”

The Workshop at Encore has become his domain; a shared, organised space where his own well-used tools sit alongside electrical equipment donated by ECH, including a drill press. Here, he fixes neighbours’ furniture, helps with flat packs and lends a hand wherever it’s needed.

Some of his most rewarding work comes from a very special

connection: his grandson, Jesper, who attends Montessori right downstairs at ECH Encore. Des regularly helps repair and restore play furniture and toys for the children, as well as showing them how to use tools safely. “We teach them how to do it properly,” he says. “The first rule is to keep your fingers out of the way!”

From his balcony overlooking Smart Road, Des can often watch Jesper playing below, coffee in hand. It’s a simple routine that brings him joy, along with greeting passersby each morning, including a group of Modbury Hospital nurses who once surprised him with a Christmas hamper as thanks for his daily waves.

For anyone worried about leaving a big shed behind, Des is living proof: you don’t lose what you love, you simply find a new way to keep it going.

CLIENT STORY

A Life Defined by Strength has taken many forms in Chris’ life. In the 1980s, she was a competitive powerlifter, earning gold, silver and bronze medals at state and national competitions. At her peak, she lifted a combined total of 335 kilograms across her three competition lifts; an extraordinary achievement for someone who had entered a gym simply to get fit for a holiday.

Strength

Powerlifting entered Chris’s life during a period of great personal upheaval. After the sudden loss of her husband, she found herself withdrawing from the world, unsure how to move forward. A doctor encouraged her to take a break and suggested a trip to the Northern Territory to hike in nature.

Chris thought that if she was going to have an intrepid holiday, she needed to build her fitness.

The local gym became her refuge, and the coaches quickly noticed her natural strength. Within weeks, she was competing, and soon after, she was winning.

That strength followed her into her working life. Chris became the first-ever female storeman at the Simpsons factory, and thanks to her powerlifting ability, she was the only person permitted to single-handedly lift a tumble dryer and walk it across the factory floor.

She broke barriers, proved doubters wrong and handled resistance with grit and humour: “The truck drivers didn’t like being unloaded by a woman,” she laughs, “but I took it up to them.”

Strength also became essential as Chris navigated lifelong health challenges, including the removal of a third of her tongue due to cancer. Relearning speech and eating was a long, determined process. “It was slow,” she says, “but you just keep going.”

Although she continues to manage multiple health issues, Chris approaches each day with discipline and an unwavering commitment to independence.

Amidst a difficult childhood, Chris found solace in the natural world. She was able to embrace her passion later in life as an award-winning volunteer for the

City of Playford, establishing their vital native seedbank. In true Chris fashion, she took the role seriously by training with experts at the Adelaide Botanic Garden to identify healthy seed stock. After collecting native flora seeds, Chris used a high-powered microscope and a surgeon’s scalpel to evaluate seeds and ensure only the strongest were stored. Her contributions had a lasting environmental impact and remain one of the achievements she is most proud of.

At home, feng shui is an important guiding principle, reflected in her carefully arranged rooms and her beautifully sectioned garden, including a calm, balanced corner of the yard that encourages contemplation and relaxation.

During the pandemic, Chris also taught herself a range of crafts and has since decorated her home with pieces she made by hand.

ECH plays a key role in helping Chris to maintain her independence through in-home

support, gardening assistance and, importantly, opportunities for connection. “I love the bus outings,” she says. “They get me out and give me something to look forward to.”

“Strength now,” Chris says, “is knowing what I can do and what I shouldn’t.” And in redefining strength on her own terms, she continues to live exactly as she always has: determined and independent.

Flu season reminder During flu season, we encourage you to take a few simple precautions to help keep yourself well and allow us to safely continue providing care. Flu can spread more easily during winter, particularly among older people and those with existing health conditions. Staying up to date with your flu vaccination, practising good hand hygiene and avoiding close contact when unwell can make a real difference.

RECOGNITION

South Australia’s LGBTQIASB+ community will celebrate Pam Price as the newest inductee into the South Australian Pride Hall of Fame in 2026, recognising more than four decades of feminist leadership, lesbian visibility and peer-driven advocacy.

When Pride Adelaide approached Pam, her first thought wasn’t about the honour, it was whether accepting it would prevent someone else from being recognised. This humility reflects the heart of her work: ensuring others are heard and supported.

Pam began her career in the women’s health movement, embedding feminist principles into counselling, advocacy and community development.

She supported lesbians coming out, lesbian mothers seeking affirmation and women experiencing violence, always amplifying voices that had long been silenced.

In 1988, she co-initiated the first National Lesbian Feminist Conference, held in Adelaide in 1989.

The event, attended by over 400 women from across Australia, marked a defining moment for the national lesbian community. Her leadership continued in the HIV sector, ensuring women living with HIV were central to policy, research and service design, shifting systems toward respect and inclusion.

Today, Pam advocates for older LGBTQIASB+ South Australians, promoting dignity, pride and connection so that identity is never diminished by age.

“For most of my career, the heart of my work has been that the personal is political,” Pam says. “Being seen and belonging is central to our sense of self.”

Chair of Pride Adelaide, Dave Newman, says, “Pam has shaped services, influenced policy and built peer networks that continue to support women across South Australia. Her humility and community-first approach define her leadership.”

Pam was inducted alongside fellow community icon Eric Kuhlmann at the 2026 South Australian Pride Gala on Saturday, 6 June 2026, celebrating the courage, resilience and history of South Australia’s LGBTQIASB+ communities.

Meet Jo,

ECH Dementia Support Coordinator Jo’s role as Dementia Support Coordinator sits at the intersection of direct client support, workforce development and service design.

Working with people living with dementia and their families, Jo provides in-home well-being check-ins, practical strategies and tailored guidance to support everyday living. “It’s about understanding what’s changing and what might help,” she says.

“Then we can put simple, realistic strategies in place.”

Her work is highly collaborative.

Referrals often come through ECH care teams, and Jo works closely with families, support workers and clinicians to build a clearer picture of each person’s needs. That might involve adjusting routines, improving the home environment or developing more detailed care approaches to guide staff.

Beyond individual visits, Jo plays a key role in strengthening dementia-informed care across ECH. She supports Home Support staff and Day Program teams with training and problem-solving, helping them respond to changes

in behaviour and maintain clients’ independence and dignity. “If we can build staff confidence, that has a flow-on effect for many clients,” she says.

Jo also contributes to policy and service development, ensuring emerging research and best practice translate into meaningful support in a home environment.

“A lot of research is based on residential care,” she explains.

“Part of my role is adapting that to work in people’s homes.”

Raising awareness is another focus. This year, Team ECH raised $2,600 through the Memory Walk & Jog, and in June, Jo will present at the International Dementia Conference, sharing her “Dementia in Bloom” framework.

“Everything comes back to knowing the person,” she says.

“When we understand their life story, we can provide support that’s practical, relevant and respectful.”

Strong & Stable: Building confidence, one step at a time

If you’re looking for a little extra support with exercise, ECH’s Strong & Stable classes are a great place to begin. Designed to improve balance, strength and confidence, these small-group sessions offer a safe, welcoming environment where everyone can move at their own pace.

Led by experienced Exercise Physiologists, Physiotherapists and Fitness Leaders, each 45-minute class combines gentle resistance exercise, stationary and dynamic balance and light aerobic activity. Exercises are conducted seated and/or standing, with modifications to suit all capabilities. Whether you’re rebuilding strength after illness, managing mobility changes or simply wanting to feel steadier on your feet, there is a space for anyone in Strong & Stable classes.

The program also helps reduce fear of falling, which can impact confidence and independence over time.

“We design Strong & Stable so people can start exactly where they are,” says Emily, Physiotherapist.

“It’s about building strength and balance safely, while giving people the confidence to keep moving in their everyday lives.”

From sit-to-stands and leg strengthening to simple balance exercises, each activity supports everyday

Fitness Leader Locky says the supportive atmosphere is just as important as the exercises.

“It’s a really encouraging space. People support each other, have a laugh and celebrate the small wins, and those wins quickly add up.”

“It’s not just about exercise,” Emily adds. “It’s about helping people stay independent and feel confident doing the things they enjoy.”

No matter your age or fitness level, Strong & Stable meets you at your level, with qualified guidance every step of the way. With the added bonus of a friendly, social environment, it’s a class many look forward to each week.

Strong & Stable classes are offered at all ECH Wellness Centres. Everyone can access ECH fitness services on a self-funded basis, and those aged 65+ may be eligible for government support.

Caring for Trees

Around Our Villages

Trees are an important part of life in our villages. They provide shade, cool outdoor spaces, support wildlife and create pleasant areas to enjoy year‑round. With the right care, trees can continue to thrive while helping keep our communities safe.

Trees near village boundaries At times, trees on neighbouring properties may affect village spaces through overhanging branches, fallen leaves, shade, or roots.

ECH may trim branches or roots back to the property boundary if needed, but care must be taken not to damage the tree. Cutting beyond the boundary or causing harm could create issues for both the tree owner and ECH. For this reason, any concerns involving neighbouring trees are carefully assessed before action is taken.

Protected trees Some larger trees are protected under South Australian planning laws. These are known as regulated or significant trees and require special approval before

they can be heavily pruned, damaged or removed.

Because of these requirements, ECH works with qualified arborists to ensure all tree care is carried out responsibly and in line with legislation.

Keeping trees healthy and safe ECH undertakes a three-yearly inspection cycle across villages to help maintain safe and healthy outdoor environments. Trees over three metres tall are assessed by qualified arborists, who check their condition and identify any maintenance needs.

These inspections support proactive care and long‑term planning, while preserving the shade and character our trees provide.

With over 20 years’ experience in local government and community roles, Nicole leads ECH’s landscaping and grounds team, creating outdoor spaces that enhance resident and client wellbeing while promoting beauty, functionality and connection to nature.

When is the best time to prune?

For most trees, winter is the ideal time for pruning. Trees are dormant during the cooler months, which means pruning causes less stress and supports healthy regrowth in spring.

Some trees have different needs.

Citrus and avocado trees are best pruned in late summer or early autumn, while flowering trees should be pruned in Spring.

Pruning should always be avoided during extreme weather.

With expert guidance and thoughtful care, our trees will continue to enhance village life for years to come.

Between January and March 2026, we received 253 concerns, a slight decrease from last quarter.

While Home and Community Services saw fewer issues, Property and Retirement Living experienced an increase, highlighting the need for clear communication and early consultation when changes are planned.

Creating Your

Digital Legacy Many of us have built a rich online life: photos, accounts, memories and important information. Planning what happens to these after we’re gone is called “creating a digital legacy”, and it’s an important step in supporting your loved ones.

Start by making an inventory of your digital assets. This includes email accounts, social media like Facebook and Instagram, online banking, myGov, cloud storage and subscriptions. Having a clear list will make things much easier for your family.

Next, ensure secure access. A password manager safely stores your login details in one place.

Popular options include LastPass, 1Password and Bitwarden. To get started, choose a provider, download the app to your phone or computer, and create one strong master password. From there, you can save your account logins as you use them. Be sure to let a trusted person know how to access this in an emergency.

You may also wish to appoint a “digital executor”, someone you trust to manage your online accounts according to your wishes. This can be included in your will, alongside instructions about whether accounts should be closed, memorialised or shared with family.

Many platforms now offer built-in legacy tools. For example, Apple and Google allow you to nominate someone to access your data, while Facebook lets you choose a legacy contact.

To preserve precious memories, consider services like Evaheld, or back up photos and documents to a hard drive and let your family know where it’s kept.

RECIPE

Orange, Thyme and

Poppy Seed Cake

What You'll Need 175g butter, diced and softened

¾ cup caster sugar

2 tsp finely grated orange rind

2 extra-large eggs

1 ½ cups self-raising flour

2 tbsp poppy seeds

1 tsp fresh thyme leaves or ½ tsp dried thyme

cup milk

cup orange juice

½ cup icing sugar (for drizzle)

1–2 tsp orange juice (for drizzle)

Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each.

Preheat oven to 180°C (or 160°C fan-forced).

Lightly grease and line a 10 x 20cm loaf tin.

Beat butter, sugar and orange rind in a bowl until pale and creamy.

Pour batter into the prepared tin and bake for 50 minutes, until golden and cooked through.

Let cake cool in the tin for 15 minutes, then remove and cool completely on a wire rack.

Fold in flour, poppy seeds and thyme, then stir in milk and orange juice until smooth.

Mix icing sugar with a little orange juice to make a drizzle, then pour over the cooled cake. Allow to set before slicing.

Tips Valencia, Navel and Cara Cara oranges are all excellent for baking thanks to their bright flavour and natural sweetness.

Valencia oranges are juicy and maintain a balanced flavour when heated, Navel oranges are sweet and seedless, and Cara Cara oranges add a rich, slightly berry-like taste without becoming bitter when baked.

Use fresh thyme for a subtle, fragrant flavour or dried thyme if that’s what you have. Reduce the amount of dried thyme to half, as the flavour is more concentrated.

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days; the cake can also be frozen for up to 2 months. Add the icing just before serving.

Growing Better Places: A Closer Look at Project Eden

Project Eden is a partnership between ECH and the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium (BGSH), designed to bring more life and colour into ECH retirement villages through biodiversity-sensitive design. It provides a clear framework for future redevelopment, ensuring green spaces are sustainable and aligned with Adelaide’s climate goals.

At its heart, Project Eden enhances everyday life for residents and communities. By increasing greenery, supporting wildlife and creating more inviting outdoor spaces, the program promotes wellbeing and connection. Staff and residents are involved from the outset, building the knowledge and confidence to care for these environments over time.

A joint workshop in February 2026 highlighted that each village has unique conditions and needs, making a one-size-fits-all approach ineffective. In response, a flexible decision-making framework was developed.

A new home for College Grove

Known as the Triangle of Trade-offs, it balances three priorities: • Resident wellbeing • ECH operational needs • Local biodiversity This ensures decisions support all three, encouraging balanced, sustainable outcomes.

Work is already underway. In March, teams held an on-site session at Crescent Lodge to collect site data and identify important features.

Following engagement with residents in May, Crescent Lodge will become the first pilot site, with detailed design works to begin in winter 2026.

Project Eden is just getting started—watch this space as we share more in future editions.

Wellness and Day Programs Exciting changes are ahead for our College Grove community. ECH’s Wellness and Day Programs in Walkerville will soon relocate to a purpose-designed site at 213 Glynburn Road, Firle, with the move expected around June.

The new centre will be a modern wellness hub, supporting allied health, day programs and community connection, with new equipment arriving soon.

All services will continue at College Grove until the move, with no disruption. We’ll share updates on the new Firle site, including opening details, as the space takes shape.

At College Grove Day Program, clients enjoyed a special performance by the SAPOL Band’s Wind Quintet.

Meanwhile, ECH team members proudly joined the Memory Walk and Jog, supporting dementia awareness and showing their commitment to a cause close to many in our community.
