FALL 2022 UPDATE from our president & ceo

After two years working through the fog of uncertainty caused by the pandemic, 2022 saw Benevilla rise to new heights of excellence both as a business and a community resource. The watchword of the year is “adaptive” as we saw departments streamlined, innovative programs launched, and our agency become even more accessible to the community.

If you have not heard, the Benevilla Benefitness Adaptive Gym opened officially in July. It didn’t take long to exceed initial membership goals proving we truly uncovered a major need in our community. Several of our free programs including the Community Resource Line, Home Services, Support Groups, and Preferred Partners, have been brought together under the C.A.R.E.S. Department umbrella with a dedicated callin line. Our Group Supported Employment Program supporting our members with developmental and intellectual disabilities saw major success with members placed at Chick-fil-A in Surprise and Grandview Terrace retirement Community in Sun City West. And our Life Enrichment Day programs once again achieved a 3-year accreditation from CARF International (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities). Benevilla met over 1,500 standards with the highest quality of care for their families and members.

We are excited to share the 2021 40th Anniversary Benevilla Annual Impact Report with you. Benevilla is proud to have served our community since 1981 and we are always looking for new ways to increase our impact and adapt to changing needs in our community.

Benevilla’s mission of Enriching Lives would not be possible without your support and we sincerely appreciate every donation received. We couldn’t do it without you!

Sincerely,

Benevilla would like to send our deepest sympathies to the families experiencing loss in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19.We are here for you.

Financial hardship is an additional challenge faced by older adults and adults with disabilities, as well as their caregivers. More than 60% of Benevilla client members who report their income fall within the low and moderate-income ranges.

The National Institute on Aging finds that many older adults want to “age in place,” or stay in their homes as they get older, but many face challenges that limit their ability to live independently, including developing illnesses or disabilities; social isolation; food insecurity; declined physical ability; lack of transportation; and poverty.

The incoming population of aging adults tends to have smaller or distant families, increasing the need for paid professional caregivers – already complicated by a labor shortage, then worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), nearly 25% of adults aged 65 and older are considered socially isolated. The CDC also reports that people who experience social isolation are at a higher risk for conditions like dementia, heart disease, and stroke.

44% of parents found that the lack of childcare resources was a barrier to remote or in-person work. About one in five working-age adults said the reason they can’t work is the disruption to their childcare arrangements created by the pandemic.

A LEGACY OF CARING

Ted (posthumously) and Marietta Johns were honored with the Benevilla Bill Wolfrey Community Service Award in November 2021. The Johns have been involved with and supportive of Benevilla since 2016. Service and philanthropy have always been a part of their lives. Ted was a Lutheran minister for over 40 years and Marietta was a teacher then a financial planner/senior vice president. Through volunteerism and community philanthropy, Ted and Marietta have made a true impact, traveling the globe helping the poorest of the poor in third world countries.

After a long courageous struggle with Parkinson’s disease, Ted passed away in the Fall of 2021 with his loving family by his side. He worked in numerous philanthropic organizations and had an intense love for local organizations – of which, being a Rotarian and a member of AA were among the most important.

When accepting the award, Marietta said that when she and Ted relocated to Surprise, they were looking to be involved in a local organization that had a “culture of caring, kindness, curiosity, service and compassion and that Benevilla was exactly what we were looking for! One of the guiding values of Benevilla since 1981 was ...and is... COMPASSION—building a caring community of neighbors helping neighbors.”

Ted and Marietta spent their lives giving back and doing their part to improve our community and the world and are greatly deserving of this honor.

The Johns are a model of generosity and they have been a true friend to Benevilla. We are so grateful for all they have done.

THE LARGEST SINGLE-DAY GRANT INITIATIVE IN ARIZONA HISTORY

Benevilla was deeply honored to be one of the chosen nonprofits to be included in the milestone Now is the Moment Day of Giving in September 2021! We thank the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust Trustees for your generous support and continued belief in Benevilla’s mission of Enriching Lives.

LEADING WITH GENEROSITY

Congratulations to AARP Arizona who were awarded the 2021 Benevilla Business Leadership Award. AARP Arizona has generously supported Benevilla since 2016 with both organizational and event specific sponsorships, including sponsorships of our popular Caregiver Connect event series. AARP staff have been guest presenters at several Benevilla events, and their team has even volunteered in our Life Enrichment programs providing activities, socialization, and friendship for our members. They are true advocates of Benevilla and our mission of enriching lives.

“AARP Arizona is honored to receive the 2021 Benevilla Business Leadership Award. For many decades, Benevilla has been committed to enriching the lives of older Arizonans. AARP shares this commitment and is proud to partner with Benevilla on this meaningful endeavor,” said Alex Juarez, AARP Arizona Communications Director.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: Paying it Forward

Louise Fallner and her husband, Michael, believed in working hard, being loyal, saving for a rainy day, and helping others. Louise and Michael moved to Surprise from Cleveland, after they both retired from long careers in the steel industry. When they moved to the area, they familiarized themselves with local not-forprofits that they could help support. That’s when they discovered Benevilla. The Fallners started donating to Benevilla 12 years ago. Louise continued to support Benevilla after Michael’s death and became a Benevilla Legacy Circle member after she decided to include Benevilla in her estate plans. Louise said she chose to give to Benevilla now and in the future because, “Benevilla is truly making a difference in our community by helping individuals and families who need it the most.” She is ‘paying it forward.’

By making a planned gift to Benevilla, you can help provide much needed, life enriching programs and services to community members for many years to come. ROAD TRIP

PLAN FOR YOUR LIFE’S JOURNEY

TIME FOR A ROAD TRIP

We

you.

Knowing that life is one long road trip, we can help you plan your life’s journey so you can experience joy and peace of mind. Ask us about the following destinations and what they offer you:

PAYABLE ON DEATH FORMS — Without the formality of a will or trust, you can give significant assets to your family and favorite charitable causes by completing a simple form.

WILL — Not having a will is like leaving on a trip with no destination in mind. Write or update yours and live every day knowing your values will be honored and your legacy remembered.

APPRECIATED ASSETS – Take inventory of your highly appreciated assets and use them, rather than cash, to transfer gifts to charity.

A WILL is more about values than valuables.

No matter how far into your life’s journey or planning you are, it is never too late to consider the destinations above. You decide your trip based on your values and priorities. We can help you get there.

No matter where you are, we can help your life's journey.

VETERANS SPOTLIGHT

Ron Olive joined the Marine Corp right after he graduated high school and served 5 years. On October 23, 1965 Ron was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” while serving as a Squad Leader for Company D Third Reconnaissance Battalion in Vietnam.

While assigned as the assistant special agent in charge of foreign counterintelligence for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) Washington Field Office, he personally led the espionage investigation and obtained the confession of Israeli spy, Jonathan Jay Pollard. Ron is the author of the book Capturing Jonathan Pollard: How One of the Most Notorious Spies in American History Was Brought to Justice. On March 26, 2009, at the Sixth Raleigh Spy Conference, held at the North Carolina Museum, he spoke on how Pollard betrayed U.S. secrets to Israel with the complicity of his wife Anne.

Ron is a member of the Benevilla, Lucy Anne’s Place, Life Enrichment Programs. He is one of several veterans that we are honored to help serve. For more information on the Benevilla Life enrichment program please call 623-584-4999 or visit Benevilla.org
