Benevilla News and Events October - December 2021 16752 N. Greasewood St., Surprise, AZ 85378 | 623-584-4999 | www.Benevilla.org

From Our President and CEO As another year comes to an end, our agency continues to navigate through our new normal while providing our community with the safest, high quality programs and services we can. Benevilla is proud to have served our neighbors for 40 years and the celebration continues! We are excited to share some of our newest programs, our upcoming events and opportunities to get involved in this edition of The Benevilla Connection. We are also honored to bring to you the 2020 Benevilla Annual Impact Report within this issue of the Connection Newsletter. In 2020, among the trials and tribulations, our community continued to be our biggest source of support. As we take a look at the work that took place during the past year, we are equally humbled and inspired. Because of you and your dedication, we once again were able to support our neighbors in need, when they needed us most. From our free home services, virtual support groups, to adjusting to virtual family activities, Benevilla was always here. We made the decision to keep Wirtzie’s, our preschool & childcare, open during the entire COVID-19 pandemic to serve first responders and essential workers when they had no other place to turn for childcare. Although, we briefly closed our Life Enrichment Programs, we soon decided to reopen with new safety protocols and procedures to serve our senior population in need and support their caregivers. The work we do here at Benevilla is only possible because of you and I believe this report illustrates what we can accomplish together. Sincerely,

Joanne Thomson

Number of Arizona Caregivers in 2020 caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s and other dementias 262,000 Total Hours of Unpaid Care 511 Million Total Value of Unpaid Care $9.7 Billion AARP research has found that nearly 90% of older adults prefer to remain in their homes and communities as they age. According to the 2019 American Community Survey, there are almost 700,000 residents over the age of 65 living in Maricopa County with 254,000 living in the West Valley. Caregiving is a tremendous responsibility that can negatively impact caregivers’ health and even financial well-being. The CDC reports that the health impact of providing care for an older adult includes elevated levels of depression and anxiety, compromised immune function, and increased risk of early death. About one in five working age adults said the reason they can’t work is the disruption to their child care arrangements created by the pandemic.

“Thank you for calling to inform me that Benevilla is still available if needed during the COVID-19 crisis. How comforting for someone such as myself, who is particularly isolated at this critical time.”

“I appreciate Benevilla and their

volunteers so much! Just hearing from my volunteer helps relieve my loneliness and gives me something to look forward to during the week.”

“My Family Support Coordinator always listened to my concerns and needs and went above and beyond to help. She then followed up to make sure I received the services needed. She was friendly, respectful and very professional.”

“My kids have been going to Wirtzie’s since August and they both love it so much. My three year old has so much fun and tells me about her day as soon as I pick her up. She loves her teacher and the friends that she has made.”

“My wife had a stroke last fall. After at-

tending the program for only one week, she already shows improvement. Yesterday she got up and got dressed all by herself – the frst time since the stroke. A month ago, I had no hope. Now I have hope!”

YOUR IMPACT IN WORDS “I would be drowning right now if I hadn’t started attending the Benevilla Caregiver Support Group! I learned about so much there, such as the different types and stages of dementia, what legal documents I needed to have prepared, and about agencies that could help me during this journey. Meanwhile I was also receiving constant reminders about the importance of taking care of myself while caregiving.”

“During this time of my home confinement since I am in a high risk category, my Benevilla Volunteer is just the right person to do my grocery shopping. I live alone and have no close family or neighbors to help me. We talk through the glass door [when she makes her deliveries]. She brightens my day each Friday.”

children received quality care at Wirtzie’s Preschool & Childcare

Wirtzie’s Preschool & Childcare remained open throughout 2020 to provide high quality, accredited childcare for essential workers and families in our community. Benevilla free home services program provided much needed services such as grocery shopping, assisted transportation and phone pals to seniors trapped in isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dedicated Benevilla volunteers yearned to support their neighbors in need and continued to provide vital services where they could. The Benevilla Family Resource Center took their supportive services virtual and continued to provide resources at drive-thru community events. Caregivers continued to receive support from one another and the Benevilla community in our virtual caregiver support groups, one-on-one life coaching sessions, and educational event series. Community members continued to reach out for valuable and vetted resources and guidance through our Benevilla C.A.R.E.S. program. Benevilla Life Enrichment Programs reopened with new safety procedures to ensure a healthy life enriching day time program for our members and essential respite for their caregivers. Birt’s Bistro closed it’s doors but still helped provide meals to homebound seniors, job opportunities to our members, nutritious meals to our programs, and will reopen soon as Benefitness, an adaptive gym.

2020

2020 was a monumental year for us all: a year of loss, cancellations, challenges and change. Benevilla was here through it all. Stronger together.

COMMUNITY COMING

TOGETHER

Congratulations to the 2020 Benevilla Business Leadership Award recipient – The City of Peoria. The City of Peoria has been highly supportive of Benevilla for over 21 years. Through grant funding, sponsorship support, and donations of in-kind office space they support Benevilla’s overall mission but also truly encourage our work within their own city. Mayor Cathy Carlat and the Peoria Council members are advocates and ambassadors for Benevilla and look for ways to continue to partner. Peoria Councilmember Bill Patena and Mayor Cathy Carlat pictured.

“Benevilla has been a wonderful community partner and friend to Peoria, and they are near and dear to my heart” said Mayor Cathy Carlat. “Receiving the Business Leadership Award in 2020 was a tremendous honor, and we look forward to continuing our long standing partnership.”

A LEGACY

OF CARING Congratulations to Aloise Failing-Wrobel who was honored with the 2020 Benevilla Bill

Wolfrey Community Service Award in recognition of her outstanding support and service to Benevilla and the greater Northwest Valley Community.

Aloise has always made philanthropy an important priority in her life. She and her first husband Ed Failing lived in Omaha, Nebraska where she enjoyed working claims for the Union Pacific Railroad for 30 years. In addition to working full-time, she found time to do volunteer fund raising for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. During the polio epidemic, she read by the bedside of children who were hospitalized with polio who relied on iron lungs to breathe. After moving to Arizona, Aloise became active in the Sun City West and Surprise community generously sharing her time, treasure, talents, and expertise to support the work of several local non-profit organizations including Benevilla, Sun Health Foundation, and Lord of Life Lutheran Church, her local congregation. After the loss of her husband Ed, she found a supportive, loving, and generous partner in her second husband Richard Wrobel. They shared 10 happy years together traveling and enjoying family and friends. Aloise has been supportive of Benevilla for many years. She helped fund the Fulfilling the Promise capital campaign to build Benevilla’s main campus in Surprise, which was completed in 2009. She is a member of Benevilla’s Legacy Circle by including Benevilla in her estate plans. She did this so she could leave a lasting legacy and help secure Benevilla’s future. In 2010, Aloise was nominated by Benevilla for the Association of Fundraising Professional’s Spirit of Philanthropy Award because of her generous support of Benevilla and other West Valley non-profit organizations. Aloise is a model of generosity and has been a true friend to Benevilla. We are so grateful for all she has done and all that she will continue to do to support our mission and to support the community!

HIGH TAXES ARE NOT INEVITABLE

Often the threat of taxes makes big news, but the ways of lowering them does not. We have tools to help you not only lower your tax burden while supporting Benevilla, but also create benefits you may never have considered.

TAXES on your

MIND?

GIFT OF STOCK

If you have appreciated assets, such as stock, you can reduce capital gains taxes by simply transferring it to Benevilla to support our mission. Remember, you must never sell the stock or asset but transfer it directly to us to receive your tax benefits.

IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER

If the thought of paying income taxes on a required minimum distribution (RMD) is a bad idea to you, consider transferring money from your IRA (up to $100,000) to Benevilla and satisfy your RMD without paying income tax on the transfer.

CHARITABLE REMAINDER UNITRUST

Fund a unitrust and receive payments on a schedule and at a rate (within limits) of your choosing. Receive an income tax deduction and provide for you and your spouse.

WE CAN GIVE YOU DETAILS ON THESE AND OTHER SMART WAYS TO GIVE. All are designed to lower your income and capital gains taxes. Call or email us to learn how we can help you and your financial advisor meet your goals and minimize taxes.
