From Our President and CEO Who could have imagined this world of COVID-19 we are living in 2020? First of all, I’d like to express my deep appreciation to all of our community supporters, families, volunteers, staff members and Benevilla advocates for sticking with us during these unprecedented times. Our hearts at Joanne BenevillaLetter go out to any families who may have lost a loved one or been effected by this terrible virus.

Throughout this time, I could not be more proud of our amazing Benevilla family for adapting to a new normal and we hope to move forward safer and stronger than ever.

Before we move forward, we must take a look at our past and our present. Please enjoy this issue of the Benevilla Connection including our 2019 Annual Impact Report.

At Benevilla we have a vision of a better quality of life, for every one at every age. We could not reach this vision without all of our wonderful community support; it truly takes a village.

Thank you to our generous volunteers who selflessly spend their time supporting neighbors in need in our community. TWO Great Ways to Support Benevilla and Save on Your Taxes Couples filing jointly can make a donation up to $800 and individuals can donate up to $400 and receive a dollar-for-dollar Arizona tax credit!

Additionally, due to the recent stimulus package, taxpayers who take the standard deduction are now able to claim up to $300 in qualified charitable donations this year as a deduction from their gross income outside of the AZ Tax Credit program.

Together Again. Benevilla Reopens We are very excited to announce that three of our five Life Enrichment Day programs reopened on Monday, September 14th at limited capacity. With a successful and safe reopening, we are happy to see many of our member’s smiling faces back on campus.

New safety, social distancing and sanitization procedures have been put into place as the safety of our members, families and staff are always our number one priority.

We are excited to be able to support the many hardworking caregivers we serve while continuing to provide purpose and dignity to all of our members.

Opening week was a celebration for so many: “Oh, My goodness, Ron has more energy and is a different person than what he was the last 6 months. He does not feel isolated and he recognized his friends right away and his mental outlook was uplifted.”

“Benevilla Life Enrichment Programs have so many benefits for the member and for the families. Ron is happy to be back and his favorite things he has enjoyed since he has been back open are the music and playing pool.”

On behalf of the many caregivers we serve, Gail wanted to express a huge Thank You to the staff and the whole Benevilla family. She knows how much this program benefits Ron, and the many other members, and gives her peace of mind that he is happy, safe and well taken care of.

Benevilla continues to provide Free Home Services to our neighbors in the community, volunteer opportunities, virtual Caregiver Support Groups, virtual educational opportunities, resources and information and support services to our families in need.

Season for Change, Constancy of Care Written by Kresta Horn, Wirtzie’s Director of Child Development

Started in 2009 as part of Benevilla, Wirtzie’s Preschool and Childcare opened as an Arizona Department of Health Services licensed child care and preschool and has since become a Nationally Accredited center as well as recognized as a 4 Star program in the State of Arizona’s Quality First program. A classroom for each age group and capacity for 89 children, Wirtzie’s has served and continues to serve hundreds of children every year. Wirtzie’s is named after Dick and Eileen Bloechl, who desired that their legacy be defined by providing a nurturing environment for future generations. Eileen’s maiden name was Wirtz and hence became the inspiration for ‘Wirtzie’s’. In 2009, when Wirtzie’s was started no one knew the magnitude of services that would be valued in 2020.

The beloved Fred Rogers wrote “Constancy of care.

Perhaps that’s all we can hope to find that doesn’t change. But what a lot that is!” In a world right now where it feels like the only constant thing in life is change, constancy of care has held tight. Prior to March 2020, families were knocking on our door to enroll their child(ren). Every classroom had a waitlist.

It could not have been a better season in the industry.

When the word came out from Governor Ducey that schools would remain closed passed the already scheduled Spring Break, the fear began in parents and guardians of the little ones.

What would happen? Was it still safe for children to be in groups? Was childcare still an option? As family

after family dropped from the program because of their own loss of jobs or their fear of exposure for their child, for their family, there remained 35 children that still needed care.

The last couple weeks of March every day was filled with change. Children that once had attended every day were staying home. Our organization and our program worked to develop new policies and procedures, following what seemed to be daily updated guidance from the Centers for Disease Control, Maricopa County Health Department, and Arizona Department of Health Services Child Care Licensing. If schools were to remain closed, how was Wirtzie’s going to be different? What made childcare exempt from the State’s guidance for schools? As things changed, every day, I had parents begging us to stay open because they still needed to work, it was apparent that childcare was an essential service. Constancy of care was essential.

First Things First of Arizona stated that when the pandemic arrived 50% of centers in the Northwest Maricopa Region, (Peoria, El Mirage, Glendale, Surprise, Wickenburg, and Youngtown) closed due to the drastic loss of children and the fear that families were experiencing. Holding on, Benevilla committed to keep Wirtzie’s open to ensure that no matter what the 35-55 children that remained would have constancy of care. Wirtzie’s was proud to continue to serve the children of those who were essential workers at the time including first responders, those in the medical field, and more.

Each day staff, the essential heroes of Wirtzie’s, came to work. Fighting their own fears, thinking of their own families and what this pandemic meant in their own lives, chose to fight through and see the value of caring for the children. Ranging from 6 weeks to 5 years old, staff didn’t skip a beat of ensuring that the children were provided the same level of care, the same level of early childhood education, the same meeting of all their needs with love and nurture, that had been done prior.

Despite all the changes, what remained and continues is constancy of care. Care for the children. Care for the families. Care of each other and ourselves. And care for our community. Caring never stops at Wirtzie’s and we believe it’s what our founders would’ve wanted….they just might’ve added to “providing a nurturing environment for future generations”, by saying “providing a nurturing environment and a constancy of care for all generations, despite the changes in the world.”

A few planned giving options include: Bequest Gifts A charitable bequest is simply a distribution from your estate to a charitable organization through your last will and testament. After providing for the needs of your loved ones in your will, you may choose to benefit organizations like Benevilla that reflect causes personally important to you.

Charitable Trusts Charitable trusts provide an annual income to the donor or a designated beneficiary for life (or another period of time as you specify). Upon the death of the trust’s beneficiary, the trust principal transfers to a charitable organization such as Benevilla.

Life Insurance This is an easy way to make a significant impact. You simply fill out a form that names a charitable organization such as Benevilla as the beneficiary to receive assets from a life insurance policy.

irt & Louisa Kellam were awarded the 2019 Bill Wolfrey Community Service Award in recognition of their outstanding support and service to Benevilla and the greater Northwest Valley Community. The Kellams have devoted their lives to philanthropy with both their time and treasure since moving to Sun City West in 1990.

Louisa has a passion for Women’s health and The Louisa Kellam Center for Women’s Health at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center is named in Louisa’s honor. Louisa volunteers at the Dysart Community Center teaching English as a second language and is their current Board President. She also serves as the Vice President of the West Valley Symphony Board.

Birt has played a very active role in Board and community leadership over the years and was an integral part of the success in raising funds for the capital campaign to build Benevilla’s main campus. He currently serves on the Benevilla and Sun Health Board of Directors and is an active member of the Sun City West Rotary Club.

The Kellams shared, “We are so pleased to be involved with various local nonprofit organizations, like Benevilla, because they do so much for the community and use their resources so carefully and effectively.”

There is a need in our community...

Last year, AARP Arizona conducted a survey of Arizona registered voters age 40 or older and found that 41% are current or former family caregivers and that 48% are likely caregivers in the future.

of family caregivers are emotionally stressed because of caregiving responsibilities

69% of family caregivers are stressed trying to balance job and family

60% of family caregivers find it hard to get enough rest

Research shows that psychosocial supports, such as support groups, can lead to positive outcomes for caregivers, such as a reduction in caregiver burden and depression and an increased use of health coping strategies, caregiving skills, quality of life, and well-being.

The Journal of the American Medical Association found that elderly caregivers are at a 63% higher risk of mortality than non-caregivers at the same age.

A Gerontological Society of America compilation of reports states that “The risk of becoming socially isolated is high as well for informal caregivers of older adults, given that caregiving by family, friends and neighbors can become a very confining experience and extend over prolonged periods of time.�

Benevilla recognizes caring for the needs of older adults reaches beyond the individual to the entire family. Not only do their services help older adult clients, but many programs address the ongoing needs of caregivers and families. Several of these programs rely on the dedication and selfless support of volunteers. Offering free essential home services for older adults needing extra help in maintaining their independence at home is one such program.

Enter Tom and Rhonda Hansch. Tom and Rhonda started as volunteers with Benevilla in January 2019. Tom has served over 400 hours as an assistant facilities maintenance specialist.

His tireless efforts have saved Benevilla thousands of dollars. Tom helped upgrade the lighting systems on the main campus to LED among many other projects. He was the recipient of the Benevilla Muriel Rose Volunteer of the Trimester award earlier this year.

Tom’s wife, Rhonda, has served over 225 hours in our Home Services department, offering grocery shopping and assisted transportation to doctor appointments as well as assisting her husband with maintenance projects. Many of our home services clients request her specifically. Rhonda also helped support Benevilla by participating in a photoshoot for our programs.

Tom found Benevilla on the internet when they first moved here as newly retired snowbirds. They were looking for something to do with their spare time. Tom and Rhonda really connected with the Benevilla mission and goal to “keeping seniors independent in their homes and maintaining quality of life.” Rhonda says volunteering has made Tom “utilize his skills and mind in retirement” researching projects when he needs more knowledge for completing them. Rhonda and Tom are two amazing people who love supporting Benevilla and serving our community.

Like many non-profits during the current Coronavirus pandemic, Benevilla has had many volunteers step back to reduce their public exposure in these trying times. However, Tom and Rhonda and the core of our volunteer team never skipped a beat and have continued to provide free crucial services to our community of neighbors in need.

In just the last 30 days, Benevilla volunteers have completed 150 grocery shopping and delivery trips - not just grocery pick up but actual shopping for those in need. They have also supplied assisted transportation for 125 round trips for seniors to essential medical appointments as well as 20 emergency errands. This all adds up to over 300 acts of service and 335 volunteer hours by this small but mighty volunteer work force. These services help ease the burden on family members caring for loved ones and ensure older adults with no family support are not left isolated and alone.

DON’T PAY MORE TAXES THAN YOU SHOULD Recently, Congress made significant changes to our nation’s tax laws. After 2020, taxpayers must take distributions from their IRA at age 72, not age 70½. Gone is the ability for children to inherit an IRA and stretch payments for their lifetime. They must now take the payments in 10 years. With these and all the other changes, it could be easy to miss some deductions and pay more than you should.

You have ways to reduce your taxes and provide for your family and the causes important to you. Here are some quick ideas to take advantage of (or not be disappointed by) the recent tax law changes.

If you want to have a higher income tax deduction, bunch your charitable donations. Gift more in one year, then take a year off. Take the itemized, higher deduction, then the standard deduction the next year.

Establish a charitable remainder unitrust that your IRA fully funds when you die. You can choose the length of time your children receive money from the trust without the 10 year limit.
