Number of Arizona Caregivers in 2020 caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s and other dementias 262,000 Total Hours of Unpaid Care 511 Million Total Value of Unpaid Care $9.7 Billion AARP research has found that nearly 90% of older adults prefer to remain in their homes and communities as they age. According to the 2019 American Community Survey, there are almost 700,000 residents over the age of 65 living in Maricopa County with 254,000 living in the West Valley. Caregiving is a tremendous responsibility that can negatively impact caregivers’ health and even financial well-being. The CDC reports that the health impact of providing care for an older adult includes elevated levels of depression and anxiety, compromised immune function, and increased risk of early death. About one in five working age adults said the reason they can’t work is the disruption to their child care arrangements created by the pandemic.

Wirtzie’s Preschool & Childcare remained open throughout 2020 to provide high quality, accredited childcare for essential workers and families in our community. Benevilla free home services program provided much needed services such as grocery shopping, assisted transportation and phone pals to seniors trapped in isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dedicated Benevilla volunteers yearned to support their neighbors in need and continued to provide vital services where they could. The Benevilla Family Resource Center took their supportive services virtual and continued to provide resources at drive-thru community events. Caregivers continued to receive support from one another and the Benevilla community in our virtual caregiver support groups, one-on-one life coaching sessions, and educational event series. Community members continued to reach out for valuable and vetted resources and guidance through our Benevilla C.A.R.E.S. program. Benevilla Life Enrichment Programs reopened with new safety procedures to ensure a healthy life enriching day time program for our members and essential respite for their caregivers. Birt’s Bistro closed it’s doors but still helped provide meals to homebound seniors, job opportunities to our members, nutritious meals to our programs, and will reopen soon as Benefitness, an adaptive gym.

2020 was a monumental year for us all: a year of loss, cancellations, challenges and change. Benevilla was here through it all. Stronger together.

A LEGACY
OF CARING Congratulations to Aloise Failing-Wrobel who was honored with the 2020 Benevilla Bill
After moving to Arizona, Aloise became active in the Sun City West and Surprise community generously sharing her time, treasure, talents, and expertise to support the work of several local non-profit organizations including Benevilla, Sun Health Foundation, and Lord of Life Lutheran Church, her local congregation. After the loss of her husband Ed, she found a supportive, loving, and generous partner in her second husband Richard Wrobel. They shared 10 happy years together traveling and enjoying family and friends. Aloise has been supportive of Benevilla for many years. She helped fund the Fulfilling the Promise capital campaign to build Benevilla’s main campus in Surprise, which was completed in 2009. She is a member of Benevilla’s Legacy Circle by including Benevilla in her estate plans. She did this so she could leave a lasting legacy and help secure Benevilla’s future. In 2010, Aloise was nominated by Benevilla for the Association of Fundraising Professional’s Spirit of Philanthropy Award because of her generous support of Benevilla and other West Valley non-profit organizations. Aloise is a model of generosity and has been a true friend to Benevilla. We are so grateful for all she has done and all that she will continue to do to support our mission and to support the community!

Aloise has always made philanthropy an important priority in her life. She and her first husband Ed Failing lived in Omaha, Nebraska where she enjoyed working claims for the Union Pacific Railroad for 30 years. In addition to working full-time, she found time to do volunteer fund raising for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. During the polio epidemic, she read by the bedside of children who were hospitalized with polio who relied on iron lungs to breathe.
