Misery, adapted from the Stephen King novel by William Goldman, was released only this year for amateur theatre companies like Market House Theatre to produce. As I was searching for the perfect play for our October slot and to kick off the first fully produced show in our new Studio 200 Theatre, it seemed like a natural pick. We wanted something scary and memorable. The challenges were to take a well known book and movie and translate that into our small theatre. A “black box” theatre allows you to scale down scenery and focus on the acting. Locations within the house- the bedroom, the kitchen, the front door are represented by sections that are separated by darkness from the other sections to allow audiences to focus in on what’s important and use their imagination to fill in the blanks. I always find that the scariest people aren’t the ones who jump out at you and say boo, but the every day people that seem normal on the outside but have so much capacity for violence and cruelty on the inside in the name of, what they call, “love or affection.” The stalker or the “fan” who terrorizes the object of their desire because you never know what they are capable of.
Movies have it easy to do cut away shots in moments that include violence. On the stage (especially in our space) key pieces of action that included violence required a very close attention to detail because we can’t “hide” things with an audience on two sides and close up. It’s often a challenge to take something that so many people already know and bring it to life in a new production. This script by Goldman has trimmed down the book from often a dozen pages and several minutes of exposition time in the movie to just the bare minimum that is needed and left us with a powerful piece of theatre that drives towards its riveting conclusion ”like snow piling up in a Colorado blizzard” according to NBC New York reviews. I hope that our production will keep you as riveted as we were at the first read through.

TOM DOLAN (Paul Sheldon) is glad to be back on the MHT stage having last appeared in A Christmas Book (Tom). He started acting at an early age as the class clown at his grade school. While his friends and classmates enjoyed his performances, his teachers weren’t as appreciative of his skillset. He finally stepped foot on stage in high school and hasn’t stopped since. He has been performing at MHT since 1992, when he was cast in Meredith Willson's The Music Man. He has appeared in over 40 mainstage productions, as well as numerous fundraisers and murder mysteries. He has also been in seven locally and regionally produced films, as well as appearing in commercials and TV shows. He is the coordinator of Murder To Go - a murder mystery troupe at the Badgett Playhouse in Grand Rivers. He is an avid Three Stooges fan and collector, as well as a St. Louis Cardinals & Blues fan. He and his wife, Lois, enjoy being “empty nesters” but love to visit friends and family, and always enjoy when sons Josh (wife Analiese and grandsons Max & Oliver), Matt (wife Ana), and Ben (wife Lyndsey) come home to visit. He works for Home Pro Advantage as a customer service manager. Thanks to Lois for always being a great fan and supporter!
