TEAM KENTUCKY MERCH
A NOTE FROM Michael Cochran
EXECUTIVE DIRECTORWhen we were looking for a holiday show, the traditional A Christmas Carol is always the first thing people think of. As I explored the many scripts available, Patrick Barlow’s script caught my eye because of his unique theatricality. I was intrigued to look at his Christmas Carol script having done Barlow’s The 39 Steps with 5 actors. What I discovered beyond a very funny play performed by 5 actors was one of the best Christmas Carol scripts I’ve ever read. I was genuinely moved by many of the themes moving through this play, more than I’ve ever been with other A Christmas Carol scripts.
In the opening scene with Scrooge in his counting house, the use of Christmas as a marketing device and making money really hit home with me. Scrooge believes that the purpose of Christmas is to make money. How many businesses view Christmas as that very thing? The Friday after Thanksgiving puts businesses in the “black.” When I look at all the ads and the sales and the push for businesses to make money on the holiday, Scrooge suddenly isn’t just a miser but is a modern business man. Later in the play, when Jacob Marley appears and tells Scrooge that our purpose in life is to help our fellow man, Scrooge responds that “our purpose in life is to survive -that’s it.” I know of many people in the world who would agree with Scrooge.
I don’t want to give away any of the other surprises in the show, but the moments with Isabella, who’s heart is breaking and yet she knows what she has to do, genuinely moved me as well as the moment with Scrooge’s mother as she writes an inscription to a young Ebenezer (which brought tears to my eyes).
Finally, Barlow gives us a moment when Scrooge searches for his wealth he has kept locked up his whole life to survive. He discovers “the Queen has taken it.” All his treasure he kept locked away to help him survive, in the end, was taken by the state. But the true treasure is one that does not enslave us to our wealth which we can’t keep forever. Scrooge promises to do his best to, “...rid this world of the shackles of profit and greed! Of all owings and lendings and interests and borrowings and loans and penalties and bonuses and all other wretched devices that make one richer by making another poorer. “
As the play ends the call goes out - “Open Sesame!” For as Barlow writes, “we are all just one family that we share this world with in this great rolling adventure called life.”
Merry Christmas and tidings of Joy!
