SJ12a makes stunning Grand Prix debut
Team BRM driver Tom Goess in his Mygale SJ12a leads the pack at the Grand Prix meeting
The all-new Mygale SJ12a Formula Ford made a stunning debut in Round One of the Australian Formula Ford Championship held at Albert Park in conjunction with the Australian Grand Prix. Mygale owner Bertrand Decoster was on hand to witness the dominant performance from the Mygale teams around the famous Albert Park circuit. Led by Minda Motorsport/CAMS Rising Star driver Jack LeBrocq and Sonic Motorsport’s Garry Jacobson the new chassis from the decorated French manufacturer proved its undoubted potential, with seven of a possible nine podium positions over the three races falling to Mygale pilots. LeBrocq led the way with victories in the
April 2012
first and third races of the weekend and a second in the other despite starting from position six on the grid after having his fastest qualifying time disallowed. Jacobson also proved his mettle with a trio of podium placings including a second in the final race of the weekend. The new Mygale, an evolution of last year’s Australian, UK, Benelux, New Zealand and Victorian Championship winning SJ11a model, features some significant upgrades from the previous model including a number of modifications to the cooling systems and a raft of aerodynamic improvements. The Mygale cars have always had an advantage in the areas of cooling and in Australia’s hot climate this is an important factor for the teams and drivers to consider. Throughout 2010 and 2011 our
ongoing development program, which has input from Formula Ford teams around the globe, has produced a better cooling system while keeping the aerodynamic advantage. According to Mygale’s Greg Woodrow the new car takes advantage of the extensive Mygale Formula 3 program, which includes advanced designing technologies and software such as Catia V5 computer analysis and extensive wind tunnel testing. “The Mygale design and wind tunnel program has been ongoing now for many years and is unbelievably professional in it’s approach. “Mygale utilises quality control that is at F1 levels meaning the cars are designed and manufactured to world’s best practices.”

Mygale’s F3 assault kicks off in Tasmania
Mygale adds new composite manufacturing process Vacuum infusion is a manufacturing process used for composite parts which involves placing dry fabrics such as carbon, fibreglass or diolen on a mould, enclosed in an airtight cover which is then placed under vacuum in order to bond the fabrics and infuse the resin. Once the fabrics are comlpetely saturated the resin is stopped and the part is then placed in an oven.
Both Jon Mills Motorsport and Harvest Motorsport aim to have their Mygale Formula 3 cars on the grid for the next round of the Australian Drivers Championship at Hidden Valley in June after Mills made Mygale’s Australian F3 debut at Symmons Plains in April. Brisbane-based Mills’ Mygale M07 endured a trying weekend at Symmons Plains with the normal new car bugs getting ironed out over the course of the meeting however the car showed it’s potential, qualifying in eighth. The Mygale becomes the first non-Dallara chassis to compete for the Australian Drivers Championship since Formula 3 became a national championship class in 2000. Mills says that his the Mygale relationship with Australian F3 will be the closest thing to a ‘works’ team the series has ever seen. “This is a professional program and there is a great partnership with Greg Woodrow

and Mygale,” Mills said. “The most pleasing thing has been the level of support from the factory and from the engineer who worked on the cars when they were run by Ultimate Motorsport in British Formula 3. “They have been fantastic in assisting the process and opening up their information and data about the car to us. “Michael Devaney, who raced the car and scored podium finishes in British F3, is now Sydney-based and we’ve enlisted him to come on board and help with the initial development and set up. “There is no data for the Kumho tyres so we are starting from scratch in a lot of ways so to have someone like him on board is a massive benefit.” Work on Harvest Motorsport’s M10 Mygale chassis is progressing rapidly and the amazing looking machine should debut at Darwin’s Hidden Valley Raceway with the driver yet to be officially announced.
This technique has recently been added to Mygale’s usual high-standard manufacturing processes (contact or pre-impregnated). The use of this process entails more definition in the conception of the mould but still remains less costly than using an autoclave. At the same time it delivers high quality aesthetics and a high degree of dimension and weight uniformity to Mygale’s high manufacturing standards. This process, although common in the manufacture of boat hulls, is not yet common in motorsport. The diolen anti-intruion panels for Mygale’s new Formula Ford were made using this new technique, as was the carbon dashboard of the very new Noao electric sportscar project.

LeBrocq leads Australian FF Championship after opening round Wins in the first and third races of the weekend have seen young Victorian Mygale pilot, and 2011 series runnerup Jack LeBrocq, take victory in the opening round of the Australian Formula Ford Championship. Held at Albert Park in conjunction with the Australian Grand Prix, LeBrocq led home a Mygale 1-2-3 in the third and final race of the weekend to seal the round victory and take the lead in the championship. Sonic Motor Racing Services Garry Jacobson and Anglo Australian Motor Sports driver Jonathon Venter completed the Mygale whitewash of the podium in Race Three. Earlier in the weekend LeBrocq made a daring last lap pass on Matthew Hart to secure the victory in the first of three races, before the results were reversed during race two, LeBrocq denied a clean sweep after sustaining some minor damage due to contact early in that event. The first race of the weekend proved a

challenge for the drivers, with the race starting under clear skies but ending under during a torrential downpour. “When the rain really started to come down on the last lap, I was able to use Matt as a braking marker,” LeBrocq said. “Coming out of turn ten, it really started to bucket down, but the Mygale is really an advantage in these conditions. “It was nice to take out the win; it’s the best possible way to start the new season.” Sonic Motor racing Services Garry Jacobson was third in the first two races and was happy with the way his Mygale was performing. “We have a lot of car speed, we set the fastest lap, but it was one of those races where it was impossible to break away,” Jacobson said. “It seems as though you really have to set yourself up for a run on the last lap.
“I’m going to keep that in mind for tomorrow’s race.” Jacobson improved to second in the final race of the weekend and sits third in the championship standings. LeBrocq, speaking after the final race on Sunday morning was happy with his start to the championship, but equally aware of the long road ahead. “It’s the best possible way to start the year, after being second in the championship last year, our aim this season is to win it,” LeBrocq said. “Racing here at the Australian Grand Prix is always great experience in a Formula Ford. “There are still seven rounds to go, and now we are fully focused on Tasmania.” Jonathon Venter’s third in the final race of the weekend was his first ever national championship podium and will give him good momentum heading towards the
Page 4
second round of the Championship at Tasmania’s Symmons Plains Raceway in just two weeks time. Mygale’s Greg Woodrow praised Venter’s efforts and that of his Anglo Australian Motorsport team after the final race. “I know how hard Jonathon and Tim Beale’s Anglo Motorsport team have worked in the past twelve months, and they are looking very strong as a team now. “I am sure with Tim’s professional guidance that Jonathon will be a race winner.”

Jacobson streaks to maiden victory at Symm
Sonic Motor Racing Services Mygale driver Garry Jacobson broke through for his maiden Australian Formula Ford Championship race and round victory at Symmons Plains Raceway in Tasmania, emerging from a spirited battle with maximum points.
“It was a pretty hard race with Shae, but I’’m sure we’’ll figure it all out for the next race.
“I knew we had a fast car, but sitting in behind him in the draft the engine started to overheat.
“For my sponsors, my family and the team, it’’s been a hard road to get here, and I couldn’’t be any more relieved.”
“That cost us some power, but considering, I’’m happy with the result.”
After qualifying on pole with a blistering lap time, Jacobson was able to use his new Mygale SJ12a to good effect in Race One to forge ahead on lap 10 of 15, when Shae Davies went wide at the end of the back straight to secure his first win.
Jack LeBrocq came out on top in the battle for fourth, just holding off the advances of Tom Goess, who harassed the championship leader throughout the heat.
“It’’s a pretty good feeling, it’’s great to be able to give the team that result,” Jacobson said.
April 2012
“It was a pretty good race with Jack, especially after having a sticking throttle through qualifying,” Goess said.
Liam Sager had perhaps the loneliest race in the field with his sixth place finish, ahead of Sam Power, who managed to clear away from a battle with eventual eighth place finisher Rhett Noonan. Simon Hodge managed to get the better of Macauley Jones to finish in ninth, with the two Symmons Plains first time starters still coming to terms with the dominant slip streaming strategies.

The second race of the weekend featured an incredible three way battle for position between Jacobson, Shae Davies and Matthew Hart, with the trio continually swapping positions before Jacobson eventually got the better of the duel. The third race however was blown wide open when Jacobson slipped off the road on the opening lap. Undeterred, the Victorian charged back from the rear of the field to fourth, earning enough points to hold on for his first national Championship round win, taking over the points lead in the process. “I was a bit disappointed with myself

going off at the start of the third race,” Jacobson said. “However, I managed to get it going and back through for the round win. The car was three-quarters of a second quicker than the field, it was flying. “I’m really happy with the result; the positive to come out of the weekend is definitely the speed of the car. “I have to thank my sponsors, as well as Sonic Motor Racing Services and Mick Ritter for making it possible.” Fourth for the round was Jack LeBrocq, who shadowed the leaders all weekend
long. After coming into the weekend leading the championship the Minda Motorsport/CAMS Rising Star Mygale driver now sits third on the points table. Team BRM Mygale driver Tom Goess pocketed a strong points haul for the weekend with a pair of fifth place finishes, while LeBrocq’s CAMS Rising Star teammate Macauley Jones showed improvement in just his second National event. The biggest incident of the round involved Simon Hodge and Sam Power, with Hodge emerging unhurt after taking a wild ride into the pit entry wall and testing his Mygale’s safety features.

EcoBoost FF ready to roll in UK
The all-new EcoBoost powered Formula Ford is almost ready to begin its inaugural season in the British Formula Ford Championship so we thought we’d take a look at the features of the new generation car. features of Formula Ford and this continues with the 2012 specification car. With only Formula 1 and Formula 3 offering this same level of freedom, it helps drive technical standards to exceptionally high levels from car manufacturers, teams and drivers alike. The different implications of car set-up and each individual chassis variation, create a steep learning curve for drivers in particular, helping to accelerate the development of their abilities to take the next step in motorsport.
The new-generation Formula Ford cars will use a production-based 1.6-litre Ford EcoBoost direct injection, turbocharged engine, limited to producing around 165PS and 220Nm, and mated to a 6-speed sequential transmission with mechanical shift mechanism. The 2012 specification car represents another advance in technology and performance for the formula.
Creating a safe environment is a key concern for Formula Ford, and the new car boasts increased levels of safety including a tubular chassis - the first in a single seat racer to comply with the latest, stringent FIA safety standards - front and rear carbon crash structures, side intrusion panels, FIA specification head restraint system, wheel tethers and an FIA removable seat.
Freedom of chassis design, engine build and numerous technical items of specification have always been standout
FIA compliance will allow the 2012 specification car to be applicable for Formula Ford championships around the

globe, especially in emerging markets where alignment to FIA regulations is commonplace. “The 2012 specification car’s FIA approved safety attributes, powerful Ford EcoBoost engine and striking kinetic design, make for a really appealing proposition for race teams and drivers,” said Mike Norton, motorsport manager, Ford of Europe. “Formula Ford is already well-known as the perfect proving ground for up-andcoming drivers and engineers, and it is Ford’s desire to continue nurturing this by supporting teams and manufacturers across the globe with the safest environment, latest technologies and most attractive packages. Formula Ford is in its 44th consecutive year and remains a very popular choice for drivers around the world. Many Formula Ford drivers have gone onto careers in Formula 1. This is a great compliment to Formula Ford and we are at Ford proud of this achievement.”

Mygale boss visits Australia An interesting spectator at the Australian Grand Prix meeting was none other than Mygale owner Bertrand Decoster. Decoster flew into Melbourne on Wednesday morning to attend the meeting, meet with Australian Mygale boss Greg Woodrow and view the new Mygale SJ12a Formula Ford in action. Decoster no doubt took great pleasure in the outstanding success of Jack LeBrocq, Garry Jacobson and Jonathan Venter during the three Formula Ford races around the Albert Park circuit. Mygale teams and drivers were invited to dinner with Decoster on the Saturday night where he met with National series drivers as well as Victorian state series newcomers Liam Morey, Jayden Wallis,
and 2011 Arrow Rewards winner Anton DePasquale. The Mygale founder was blown away by the maturity and determination these young drivers demonstrated. As usual he thoroughly enjoyed him visit and commended the Mygale drivers on their ability and determination to get to the pinnacle of motorsport. “I am always blown away by the quality of motor racing in Australia,” Decoster said. “We have fantastic teams representing Mygale in Australia and they continue to bring Mygale great success. “We’re very much looking forward to hearing about more victories as 2012 progresses.”

DePasquale hits the ground running in Victorian Formula Ford Series Fresh from being selected as the winner of Mygale’s Arrow Rewards program for 2011 Anton DePasquale has taken the spoils during the first round of the Victorian Formula Ford Championship at Winton Motor Raceway last weekend. Driving a Mygale for Sonic Motor Racing Services the 16 year old Victorian took a stunning pole position and three out of four race wins to prove he will be a driver to watch over the course of the championship’s five rounds. Never having completed a race start in a Formula Ford, DePasquale was beaten to the first corner in each race by experienced Harvest Motorsport driver Caleb Rayner. Rayner managed to hold on for the win in race one but in the subsequent races of the weekend De Pasquale would overtake Rayner and drive off into the distance to secure the Championship lead. Anglo Australian Motorsport’s Jonathon Venter rounded out the podium in each race, the 16 year old Mygale driver using the Victorian Championship meeting as a warm up for this weekend’s opening round of the National championship to be held in conjunction with the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park. Also prominent was 2010 Arrow Rewards
winner Todd Hazlewood. The young South Australian showed great maturity and pressured the much more experienced Rayner and Venter for a podium position in each race before filling an impressive fourth place in his Minda Motorsport run Mygale.
The Arrow Rewards program offers karters unprecedented career advancement possibilities, supplies them with incredible financial incentives and the opportunity to kick start their circuit racing career in Mygale’s dominant Formula Ford and Formula Three chassis.
