A NOTE FROM THE

HEAD OF SCHOOL Fifty years ago this summer, the Apollo mission placed people on the moon. Imagine! What an audacious dream, and what an accomplishment. I enjoyed listening to an interview with Gene Kranz, the former NASA Flight Director, on the restoration of Mission Control in Houston. Kranz’s most moving memory was of a “group of people united in pursuit of a cause,” each contributing to something much larger than themselves. Restoring the Mission Control room meant more to him than the artifacts or even the achievement of landing a person on the moon: “It also has a meaning related to the American psyche: that what America will dare, America will do.”

Kranz went on: “There is an awful lot of future out there. And what you got to do is you got to grab it, wrestle it to the ground, accept the challenges and then decide. You’ve got the skills. You’ve got the knowledge. You’ve got the love. And you’re capable of moving forward and making a great life for yourself.”

What drives our remarkable teachers is the fundamental belief in that vision and—crucially—the corresponding belief that our students have within them the innate ability to see the world, including the challenges, and to put their skills, knowledge, and love to work. Our mission begins by directing us to “discover and nurture what is finest in each child.” That starting point underscores the notion that our students are capable of more than even they might realize, and that together we push boundaries, develop skills, dig deeply, imagine, and do. And then break it down and imagine even further.

If you have been to a graduation at Mark Day, you know that the center of the ceremony is the graduates’ personal statements. This past June, I was struck by the many ways that our graduates spoke about courage in one way or another. They spoke of overcoming the fear of the unknown, the uncertainty of joining a new school as a 7th grader, performing for the first time in a rock band, sharing what is close to one’s heart (dragons!), coming to school with their hair dyed red, facing the loss of a loved one, taking full responsibility for one’s decisions and their impacts, and standing up for one’s case in a history Socratic seminar.

It is easy to look at our students and find many, many examples of courage in action. And every one of the examples involves the courage to be VULNERABLE. That is why we care so much about courage in the first place! It is being strong enough to let your guard down.

A hallmark of this school and the great work students and teachers do together each day is building and harnessing that courage—to take the risks that are absolutely necessary to grow as thinkers, problem-solvers, readers, speakers, and dreamers. It goes hand in hand with love.

And it has, in the end, the goal of developing in every one of our students the ability to “grab the future, wrestle it to the ground, accept the challenges and then decide.” Our students have

the skills. They have the knowledge. They have the love. And they go forward to imagine, and then to build, the future for each of us.

In the pages that follow, you will find examples of how students and teachers imagine together.

THE POWER OF IMAGINATION AND THE VALUE OF BRINGING IT TO LIFE Everything begins with an idea—a small spark cultivated with dedication and perseverance. Mark Day School is no exception. It was founded by people who wanted to provide high-quality education in an atmosphere of love and care. In the nearly 40 years since, new technology, generous donors, and a commitment to preparing youth for the current century have expanded the definition of what’s possible.

At Mark Day School, students and teachers alike are encouraged to imagine and are given the agency to bring those ideas to life. From a 3rd grader building an acoustic guitar in the Creativity Lab to 1st grade teachers bringing chickens to our campus, Mark Day provides the tools and encouragement to accomplish great goals—whatever they may be.

Mark Day School’s innovation has been propelled by imagination, one step at a time. The possibilities are endless—and they exist in large part because of our generous donors. In the pages that follow, we highlight some of the ways in which Mark Day School encourages students and teachers to put their imaginations to work, and how it’s impacting their own lives, the community, and, perhaps one day, the world.

DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT Dear Mark Day School Families and Friends,

“Imagine a school where each student feels known, where each teacher has opportunities to learn, where philanthropy is a priority. We are grateful that we don’t merely need to imagine such a school; we get to be part of it every day.”

The 2018-19 school year was wonderful. Highlights of the community’s philanthropy include raising nearly $780,000 in gifts and pledges for The Mark Day Fund, with 94 percent of current families contributing. The first-ever Giving Day on October 12th was a resounding success, with 138 parents, alumni, grandparents, and friends making a gift or pledge by midnight. Gifts to the endowment totaled $148,880, much of it supporting Indexed Tuition. Honoring Ray Orwig’s 39 years as P.E. Teacher and Athletic Director at Mark Day School, the alumni community contributed more than $78,000 in gifts and pledges to the Endowment for Indexed Tuition to support student-athletes. Contributions to the Eighth Grade Endowment Fund and to the Damon Kerby Fund for Indexed Tuition rounded out the endowment donations. And the Parents’ Association, led by PA President Ashley Ransom, contributed $222,000 through its events and fundraisers.

Thank you to all of our parents, alumni, grandparents, and friends for bringing this school and its community of learners to life each year. We can’t wait to imagine what is next.

IMPACT OF DONATIONS ON STUDENTS, FACULTY, COMMUNITY, AND CAMPUS Tuition covers only a portion of the cost of educating each child at Mark Day. The gap is covered by philanthropy, and every dollar matters.

Your donations make a positive impact on every member of our community.

Annual Fund & Spring Fundraiser Our annual fund, The Mark Day Fund, touches all corners of school life. Donations to the annual fund are put into use that school year to help advance programs such as media literacy education, school plays, outdoor ed, and faculty professional development. The funds raised during the Spring Fundraiser are also pooled into the annual fund.

Funding for Indexed Tuition Indexed Tuition helps us maintain a diverse community, which we know is a prerequisite for excellence. Because of donations to Indexed Tuition, we can enroll a socio-economically diverse community of families.

Endowment Endowment is an investment in the school’s future.

It provides for the school’s long-term health, in perpetuity, for students present and future. During the 2018-19 school year, gifts and pledges to the Indexed Tution endowment in honor of Ray Orwig’s retirement totaled $75,000, which also included a special class gift from the 8th grade. The 8th grade endowment now totals over $394,000 and the Damon Kerby Fund for Indexed Tuition reached $1 million.

During the 2018-19 school year, we were able to bring a total of 56 delegation members from our partner schools and organizations in South Africa, Costa Rica, and Beijing on our campus.

Students in grades K-2 began learning how to code using cubelets and beebots, trinkets that teach the fundamentals of robots and coding to young students.

Since the founding of the school in 1980, almost 400 graduates have received a Mark Day education because of Indexed Tuition—that’s nearly a quarter of all Mark Day graduates in the 40 years of the school’s existence.

THE MARK DAY FUND OUR ANNUAL FUND Gifts to the annual fund comprise an essential portion of Mark Day School’s budget each year. IMAGINE THIS: DESIGNING & BUILDING A DOLLHOUSE OUT OF SCRAP WOOD

When Peyton P. wanted to create a homemade birthday gift for her cousin, she knew the Creativity Lab was the perfect place to start. “My cousin likes to play with dolls, so I came up with the idea to make a dollhouse out of scrap parts,” says Peyton. In addition to attending regular classes in the Creativity Lab throughout the year, students in grades 2-8 are also invited to Open Tinkering at lunch to pursue personal design, building, and tinkering projects. Beginning in the spring, Peyton attended Open Tinkering to work on the dollhouse. First, she designed a blueprint using Adobe Illustrator, complete with height and width measurements. She then found wood recycled from previous projects. “We had to use this tool called the hot air gun to melt the glue off the used wood,” Peyton adds. She also used the jigsaw to cut out the windows and doors, the laser cutter to make the stairs, wood glue and screws to put it all together, and 3D printing software Tinkercad to make the furniture. For the windows, she’s going to use clear plastic and for the front door, she plans on using wood and real hinges. It’s a big project, but Peyton hopes to finish this fall.

IMAGINE THIS: CODING YOUR OWN VIDEO GAME

As part of their weekly MTI (Media, Technology and Innovation) Skills class, 3rd graders learned to code in Scratch, a platform that lets children program their own interactive stories and animations using a block-like interface. They learned to animate the letters in their name and then programmed a “chase” video game. Danny S. was so intrigued by this first lesson in class that he began regularly attending Open Tinkering at lunch to code his own video games using Scratch. The first game he created, called Monkey Eat Banana, was inspired by his favorite animal—monkeys.

“The goal of the game is to move the monkey to get as many bananas as you can without getting hit by the ball bouncing around,” he explains. The skills Danny and other students are practicing aren’t limited to coding—they’re applicable to a wide array of skills and situations. In his TED Talk, Mitch Resnick, LEGO Papert Professor of Learning Research at MIT Media Lab, said that it’s about “how to start with a glimmer of an idea and turn it into a fully-fledged, functioning project and learning many different core principles of design” such as how to find and fix bugs when things go wrong and how to keep persistent and to persevere in the face of frustration.” In conjunction with the games he’s created using Scratch, Danny also made his own website that houses his games and also advice for other kids on how to start their own businesses. Danny hopes to continue creating games and make them available for everyone to play.

IMAGINE THIS: HELPING TO SHAPE THE POLICIES, PRACTICES, AND PROCEDURES OF THE SCHOOL As part of the American government unit in 8th grade history, students participated in presidential and congressional simulations.

“The purpose was to understand the roles and functions of congress and the legislative branch, and how difficult it actually is for a bill to become a law,” explains Melissa Villarreal, Upper Division history teacher.

Students were sorted into committees, wrote bills, and collectively decided which ones to bring to the school’s administration. As the elected President and Vice President, Callum B. and Cole N. held several meetings with the administration, including Head of School Joe Harvey, Assistant Head Bonnie Nishihara, Head of Upper School Dave Hickman, and Director of Student Life Gaelle Gordon. “They took the creation of the bills very seriously because they knew they would be presenting them in front of admin,” says Melissa. “They had a lot of incentive to be professional and responsible with their asks—and realistic.”

Along with the class, Callum and Cole ranked the bills from low to high priority. Bills included more study hall time, greater responsibility managing time at lunch, and budgeting for a new track. “It was an honor to serve in that role on behalf of our class,” says Callum. “It was also a great experience to convey to the administration what the 8th grade class wants and have a hand in making positive changes at the school.”

RAISING CHICKENS WITH 380 KIDS When 1st grade teachers Lisa Becker and Geneva Conway served on the Garden Council, they began to envision a new addition to the outdoor learning space—live animals.

“The educational opportunities of having live animals on campus are limitless,” says Geneva.

“For example, students learn greater empathy and responsibility, and better understand sustainability and the life cycle of animals.”

Lisa adds, “Many areas of teaching can be generated from the chickens and expanded to meet curriculum throughout the grades, including math, art, and creative writing.” They also knew that animals could be therapeudic; students who may struggle to connect with others can find a connection with these feathery friends. So in 2011, they engaged in a conversation with Mark Day’s administration and began the process of bringing chickens to campus. They conducted research, visiting other schools’ coops, talking with neighbors, and checking permit requirements for the City of San Rafael. A grandparent donated the first coop and families volunteered to help prepare the area for installation. Since, we’ve had eight chickens living on campus over the years. “The ability to bring something forward and have people listen with an open mind is part of what has kept us at Mark Day for so many years,” says Geneva. This spring, we welcomed four young chickens to our new coop. What’s next? “Maybe a goat,” says Lisa.

IMAGINE THIS: BUILDING A SPACE FOR BOOKS & BELONGING

When ReAnna Gailes joined Mark Day School as Director of the Learning Commons, the “library” was spread out between a storage shed, a small conference room in the Middle Division, and mobile carts she wheeled to and from classrooms. When construction of the new two-story Learning Commons was completed in the spring of 2018, she was eager to move in and create a special place where students could not only foster a love of reading but feel safe, comfortable, and welcomed.

“I hope the Learning Commons is a place where kids in every grade can find something they love, whether it’s a book, resource, or game, and feel like they can be at home here,” says ReAnna. Since the Learning Commons opened its doors, ReAnna has made a great effort to make the space accessible to everyone. In addition to getting to know what kinds of books students like to read, she has brought different programs to the space like knitting, Origami, sticker murals, magnetic poetry, marble runs, monthly themes, and more. “Every librarian wants to be able to build their library from the ground up, and I feel honored to have been a part of that,” says ReAnna. “It’s been incredible to see it evolve day in and day out.” And constantly evolving it is, especially with the mobile furniture. “We adapt the space to the needs of students and lessons. It’s always changing, but with a few constants—a love of reading, a sense of community, and a growth mindset.”

WHY WE GIVE JONATHAN BROWN ‘89 Jonathan Brown ’89 credits the school for fostering his “life-long love of learning, fitness, and the outdoors.” One of his earliest school memories is of “fun learning activities in Mrs. Howell’s kindergarten classroom and choosing to stay in half of recess with [a friend] to fill the back of our worksheets with numbers as high as we could count.”

Jonathan was a member of the school’s first kindergarten class in 1980—the first graduating class to go through the school, kindergarten through 8th grade. His parents, Jean and Stu, were school founders and his older sister Katherine (”Kit”) graduated in 1984. Looking back at his nine years at the school, Jonathan appreciates his many teachers and coaches who “challenged me to do as much as I could and go as far as I could…my K-8 experience taught me valuable lessons about always doing my best, how to go beyond what I thought might be my limits, and what it means to give maximum effort.”

In May 2019, Jonathan joined alumni and alumni families in donating to the Endowment for

Indexed Tuition in honor of Ray Orwig’s retirement after 39 years as P.E. Teacher and Athletic Director.

When thinking about why he made this gift, Jonathan shares, “Mr. Orwig has inspired me for years to do my best as an athlete, competitor, teammate, and person.

He continues to serve as a role model for the kind of coach and youth sports administrator I try to be in my own community. Each and every child mattered to Ray, and he always seemed to find ways to connect with and motivate people as individuals.”

As a coach of his children’s soccer, softball, and basketball teams, Jonathan confesses, “I have shamelessly borrowed Ray’s format at the end of many sports seasons when I thank the kids for being part of the teams I’ve coached!”

Jonathan went on to The Branson School, Stanford University, and then Berkeley Law. He works in-house at Apple advising on standards-setting activities like 5G, Wi-Fi, and USB. He lives in Palo Alto with his wife, Miriam, who works at Genentech, and their kids Christopher and Anna.
