Dear Friends and Fellow Cattlemen,
Dear Friends and Fellow Cattlemen,
We are pleased to invite you to join us for our 25th annual private treaty bull sale! As many of you know, we are a family owned, Montana ranch operation that began with Ellis’s first registered Angus cow in 1959, that began by, and continues to, pay its bills with an Angus cowherd. Commemorating this, we have included a reprint of an article on Ellis and Rhonda that appeared in the September 1990 issue of the Angus Journal in this catalog.
For new and repeat buyers alike, thank you for taking the time to evaluate our bulls and program. You are welcome to come down and take a walk through the bulls anytime in January or February and get your name put on some bulls. The bulls are sold on a first come first serve basis and go on sale at 7:00 a.m. on February 4th! Call Ellis or text/ call Mark for a price and availability list at any time. You are welcome to reserve a bull before then at any time. If there are no competing reservations, the bull is yours on the 1st. If there is a competing reservation before the 1st, the price will increase in $500 increments.
This year’s set of bulls really represents what we have been breeding to achieve for decades. They have the powerful build, thickness, and muscle many recognize our bulls by and are loaded with the functional maternal traits that drive commercial profitability.
We continue to focus on the traits that matter in our females and create value for our customers with our bulls. You’ll notice the foot score, PAP score, and fertility EPDs in our herd sires are some of the highest in the breed. These traits matter and we have confidence our seedstock herd is one of the leaders in Angus breed for those maternal traits, mainly dependable foot quality, fertility, and easy-going dispositions, and easy growing performance calves.
Our #1 goal really is your success and profitability and we believe that Boyd Angus genetics can play a part in that. We had 8 customers sell calves in the July Northern Livestock sale in 2024. Mark ran the numbers and those customers calves averaged in the top 15 percent of all the sets of calves sold on a total $/head basis in the sale. That is a credit to our customers and the kind of cowherds they have built and strong evidence feeder calf buyer’s belief in their genetics as well.
The actual weaning weight of each bull, as well as the adjusted weight is included so that our buyers can make a fully informed decision on each bull and it’s performance. Additionally, each bull is PAP tested as a service to our fellow cattleman who run at altitude, as we do. Historically, our herd has done very well at high altitudes, and it has shown in the low average PAP scores.
We’re very pleased to offer the following selection and we welcome you to stop by for a viewing and a cup of coffee anytime.
Warmest Regards,

Rangeland boasts a moderate birthweight with ample performance and growth. We’ve been pleasantly surprised with how the Rangeland calves have grown and competed, particularly the heifer calves, which are very eye appealing. His smoothly made and lengthy bull calves also continue to be very popular with buyers in the bull pen.
Combined with foot scores near the top of the breed, making him a foot improver, Rangland also has a very impressive heifer fertility EPD with a HP of +19.6, putting him in the top 2 % of the breed and PAP EPD in the top 10 percent. Very few bulls have the proven lineage to improve feet and other maternal traits like Rangeland. Rangeland also offers a unique outcross to many angus pedigrees.
Boyd Trapper J04 is our standout Paintrock Trapper son with ample thickness and muscle. He came in with a PAP score of 40 tested at the ranch by DVM Ben Abbey. His sire Paintrock Trapper also had a 40 PAP score, meaning that you are building on successive generations of low PAP score genetics with this sire.
We were drawn to Paintrock Trapper after viewing him in person. Thick as they come, big and solid feet, we liked everything about him phenotypically. After raising 5 of his calf crops, we like him even more. Thick calves that were born really easy and tended to be on the lighter side. Their average daily rate of gain has not left us disappointed. A big bonus is that our Trapper daughters appear very promising and, if anything, we like them even more than his bull calves.
Semen available! Bull is at the ranch available for viewing.
This bull checks a lot of the real world boxes. For those of you looking for a calving ease bull with lots of early performance, this is your sire group. He had a 65-lb. birthweight and a 765 lb. actual September 15th weaning weight on grass and momma’s milk. His actual PAP score, tested by Dr. Ben Abbey was a 38. He has a widebased deep bodied phenotype with perfect feet and has always
no matter what we do with him. His Pathfinder dam is a beautiful 2013 model cow
and a
temperament. She’s raised 5 big scale pushing herd sires already and has

A powerful outcross performance sire for adding to your weaning weights that does not sacrifice maternal traits. His sons display power and mass packed into a bold-middled, sharp fronted package. Top of the breed foot scores and a PAP EPD rank in the top 4 percent of the Angus breed. For those of you interested in bulls with large Scrotals, this is your sire group!

Our top son of the record selling America bull. His PAP score was a 35, tested by Dr. Ben Abbey and he came in with a weaning weight of 755 off of pasture in mid-September. With the renowned cowmaker SAF Bando on both the sire and dam side of Boyd America’s pedigree, as well as WMR Timeless, a son of Leachman Right Time on his dam’s side, this bull has some serious long lived sound maternal genetics. Boyd America J26 offers proven foot quality and power cow siring potential few other bulls can hope to match. His phenotype does not disappoint, he is thick and muscular, offering hip shape and masculine muscle that few bulls can match. This holds true in his offspring, with his sons standing out in the bull pen and his daughters offering ample pelvic area and eye appeal.
Connealy Spur
An official AAA pathfinder sire and a king of docility. We went back to Spur due to popular demand from buyers that couldn’t get enough of the Spur son’s attitudes and power. For those of you looking for some added muscle and performance, our Spur sons should be at the top of your list. A proven bull born in 2012, Spur is in the top 10 percent for his foot angle EPD. He also has top of the breed Milk, Scrotal, Heifer Pregnancy, Docility, and Weaning Weight numbers, while still maintaining a positive calving ease EPD. His calves are big, thickly built, and have sweetheart attitudes. The attitudes in this sire group need to be experienced to be fully appreciated.
Armstrong
A true heifer bull out of the Genex sire Spickler Architect. Armstrong’s wide structured muscular phenotype is blended with an EPD profile that offers double-digit calving ease, loads of growth, with docility and foot improvement. Armstrong provides exactly what many cattlemen are seeking which is an outcross pedigree, with a focus on structure and proven
