Friends and Fellow Cattlemen,

A sincere thank you to our past customers for your confidence and support of our program. For new and repeat viewers, thank you for taking the time to evaluate our bulls and program. We are a family owned, first and second generation Montana ranch operation began with Ellis’s first Angus cow in 1959.

As you consider bulls this Spring we hope you consider bulls raised by an operation that has paid its bills for roughly 50 years with its commercial Angus cowherd. Along the way, we began raising our own bulls to fit our needs and our feeder calf buyer needs. Our cattle buyer has returned for 22 years now and continues to offer a premium over the market thanks to the performance bred into our commercial herd from these bulls.

On the cow side, for us and most ranches, the maternal side is extremely important. We calve out both our commercial and registered herds ourselves with just the help of a night calver. As our night calvers (references can be provided) from over the years can and will tell you, you’d be hard pressed to find a bad udder in the entire herd. We are happy with the traits our cow herd has come to embody and you are welcome to come by and look through them as well as the bulls. The maternal calving ease built into these cows is tremendous with very few to no calves being pulled due to size. That is not due to using extreme low BW bulls, but simply because the cows can have them. We prefer our calves in that 70-95 lb. birthweight range, because as many of you have experienced, they handle the cold better and they wean better. Regardless of what the latest set of new AI bull EPDs may tell you, there is a reason many purebred breeders have ceased to include actual weaning weights in their catalogs at the same time that birth weights have plummeted.

On the bull side, our program emphasizes selection based on real performance and phenotype. This performance transfers well over into the feedlot with many of current buyers having been referred to us by our feeder calf buyer. We have found that cattle with some frame that perform in the high range of western Montana, also perform well in the feedlot. Phenotypically, we’ve placed emphasis on thick deep bodied bulls, which we believe is quite apparent in this offering.

The published actual weaning weights were taken mid-September on calves born in February and March. They were summered on dryland grass, before being brought home and weaned on irrigated pasture (see cover photo). The bulls are wintered on a diet of hay and a limited supplement of protein pellets to provide enough condition to go to work on, but little enough that you don’t get them home and have them fall apart on you. As such, we don’t need feed the thickness onto the bulls to make them look good and have repeatedly heard positive feedback from customers on how well the bulls hold up in tough environments during breeding season.

PRICING

Every effort is made to ensure bulls are reasonably priced. The private treaty sale format allows us to save the significant expense of a sale and pass those savings on to our buyers.

All bulls listed have an associated asking price, immediately available upon request. Prices may be negotiable based on various factors, including volume and repeat purchases.

HERD HEALTH

All bulls come accompanied with proper health certificates for shipment. All bulls are fertility tested with scrotal measurements.

The bulls will be PAP tested by Dr. Ben Abbey the first week of April to assist our high altitude customers in their selections. After discussion with Tim Holt DVM’s clinic, we determined that PAP testing later in the spring (April) is of higher accuracy due to younger bull’s PAP scores having a tendency to change up to 13 months of age. If you are in need of low PAP score bulls, please inform us ASAP so that we can ensure there are bulls reserved for you.

Free delivery within 400 miles. Beyond can be negotiated to what is most fair/reasonable for the customer.

All sales are final. However, customer satisfaction is of utmost importance to us. If you have an issue with a bull, let us know and we will make it right.
