Thank you again to our customers for your confidence and continued support of our program. Last year our private treaty sale saw stellar demand, for which we are very humbled and grateful. For new and repeat buyers alike, thank you for taking the time to evaluate our bulls and program. As many of you know, we are a family owned Montana ranch operation that began with Ellis’s first registered Angus cow in 1959.

As you consider your bull choices this spring, we hope you consider bulls raised by an operation that began by, and continues to, pay its bills with an Angus cowherd. Our breeding program is driven by our need to produce productive profitable cattle in a high cost environment. This year’s Maternal Standouts offering continues that tradition and represents some of the very best of a half century of Angus breeding experience intended to develop the optimal Angus cows and calves for the commercial cowman who needs to, to put it simply, make it all work.

These Maternal Standout yearling bulls are once again the finalists from our final cut of bulls, each one making it past multiple encounters with a sharp knife. They’re out of some of our best cows, with maternal traits we will put up next to any herd. The dams of these bulls all come very close to meeting our ideals of easy fleshing, deep bodied, with even problem free udders and docile temperaments during even the coldest days of calving season. A Boyd Angus cow needs to breed back every year and wean a heavy calf that has enough performance to pay the bills, even in the often rough, arid (to put it mildly this year), and steep sloped environments of Western Montana.

We have always found that great cows raise great calves and this set of Maternal Standout bulls is no exception with an average actual weaning weight on September 28, 2021 of over 790 pounds. That average includes the entire offering of bulls in this catalog.

We run our cows the same way as many of our customers. These bulls live exclusively on grass and momma’s milk as calves. After weaning, they are developed solely on loose hay and a limited amount of protein pellets to help ensure they hold up during breeding. No corn or silage is used. We will PAP test them in late January as a service to our fellow cattleman whom run at higher altitudes, as we do. Historically, our herd has done very well at high altitudes and it has shown in our bull’s low average PAP scores.

Bulls are fully vaccinated and poured, including Fusogard for footrot.The bulls will be PAP tested by Dr. Ben Abbey on January 25th to assist our high altitude customers in their selections. If you are in need of low PAP score bulls, please inform us ASAP so that we can ensure there are bulls reserved for you. All bulls are tested genetic defect free, or have no pedigree risk.

We were drawn to Trapper after viewing him in person. Thick as they come, big and solid feet, and a PAP score of 40 at 4 years of age, we liked everything about him. After raising a set of his calves, we like him even more. Thick calves that were born really easy and tended to be on the lighter side. Their average daily rate of gain has not left us disappointed. A big bonus is that his daughters appear very promising currently and, if anything, we like them even more than his bull calves.

Megahit with a weaning weight of 912, is known for performance. Phenotypically, he has good foot and leg structure and lots of length and depth. He ranks at the top of the Angus breed for WW, RADG, $B, carcass, and foot scores. His offspring look a lot like him and were undoubtedly the longest set of calves we had at weaning. This bull checks a lot of the real world boxes. For those of you looking for a calving ease bull with lots of early performance, this is your sire group. He had a 65-lb. birthweight and a 765 lb. actual September 15th weaning weight on grass and momma’s milk. His PAP score, tested by Dr. Ben Abbey was a 38. He has a wide-based deep bodied phenotype with perfect feet and has always been very calm and docile no matter what we do with him.His Pathfinder dam is a beautiful 2013 model cow with an even bag, good feet, plenty of meat on her in all the right places, and a sweet temperament.
