Our hidden workplace

New Zealand’s workforce is getting older, but our workplaces are still too fixated on youth. More than one-third of working New Zealanders are older than 55, and about a quarter of people aged 65 and over are still in paid work.

By international standards, our nation has a high rate of labour force participation of people older than 65: around 24%. In the UK, roughly 10% of those aged 65+ work. In Australia, about 12% do. This trend is expected to continue as the 65+ population grows from about 15% of Kiwis today to more than 20% by the late 2030s. “The proportion of older people in employment has been steadily increasing over time,” 2023 Census spokesperson Dr Rosemary Goodyear said last year.

The Office for Seniors has found that about a third of people over 65 are working because they have to for financial reasons.

Goodyear says there are several factors which may be contributing to this trend, such as better health, longer life expectancy, and financial pressures surrounding retirement.

Age no problem, but ageism is As more Kiwis work past the retirement age, ageism has become one of the most persistent yet least acknowledged forms of workplace discrimination.

Hiring biases, underemployment, and problematic workplace cultures still undermine older workers.

The Office for Seniors defines ageism as the stereotypes (how we think), prejudice (how we feel) and discrimination (how we act) based on age. Combatting it is a core pillar of its response to the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing.

In practice, that shows up in hiring managers assuming older candidates are, for example, too expensive, slow or not tech-savvy, and quietly moving their CVs to the

no pile. Recruitment processes can amplify ageism. Age-related information, such as long work histories or graduation dates, can trigger subconscious assumptions. With hundreds of CVs to sift through, hiring managers might fall back on stereotypes.

International research cited by BBC Worklife shows that over‑50s who lose a job are more than twice as likely as younger workers to be still unemployed two years later. A 50‑year‑old applicant can be up to three times less likely to get an interview than a 28‑year‑old with a similar resume.

New Zealand research feeding into the Older Workers Employment Action Plan similarly finds age discrimination, often combined with gender, ethnicity or disability, as a key reason older people struggle to find and keep work. Ageism can fly under the radar in many forms. Take mandatory retirement ages for some roles, and KiwiSaver rules that limit employer contributions for workers past a certain age as two examples.

“You don’t stop learning” Behind the statistics are older workers who still want to contribute but struggle to find opportunities. Eldernet director Esther Perriam says underemployment has become increasingly common, with many older people able to secure part-time work but finding full-time roles much harder to come by. She says ageism happens across all parts of employment in New Zealand.

Many older workers are also balancing paid employment with caring responsibilities. Esther says more older people are moving into part-time work to help younger family members stay in full-time employment, as many households now rely on multiple income streams. “Often, a grandparent is required to assist with the kids before and after school.”

She bristles at the lazy stereotype that older workers can’t keep up. “Older people in our workforce are the best touch typers in the place. They’re not three-fingered pickers. These people can type at 100 words a minute. There are lots of skills that older people bring to the workplace. You don’t stop being a learner. You don’t stop being curious just because you get older.”

Esther sees age as an extra filter piled on top of everything else.

“Like most aspects, it’s just an extra layer of stuff that people can put on older people that impacts. They’re just not right for this. The age thing becomes another filter that people apply.” She believes employers who get past that filter gain a major advantage.

NZIER Business of Ageing research warns that if employers fail to adapt, the country will squander the economic potential of a growing older workforce, which contributes through paid work but also through tax, spending, caregiving and volunteering.

They’re often exceptional at keeping the pace, then slowing things down. They’re a real asset to any workplace.”

What inclusive workplaces could look like Globally, the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing calls on governments and employers to change how we think, feel and act toward ageing. Combatting ageism is one of its four key action areas.

Back home, the Office for Seniors’ Older Workers Employment Action Plan sets out actions to support older workers to stay in sustainable, meaningful employment and to push employers toward more inclusive practices.

That can look like rethinking recruitment so job ads and CV screens focus on skills rather than age, and giving managers the tools to recognise their own biases. It can also mean flexible work that recognises caregiving and grandparenting, and investing in training and technology so older workers are not written off as ‘too close to retirement’ to develop. It also means deliberately building mixed‑age teams, and revisiting retirement, benefit and savings settings that quietly penalise people who want or need to keep working.

As our nation’s workforce continues to age, the challenge isn’t whether older people can keep working, but whether workplaces are prepared to recognise the value they already bring. Age should be seen as experience to build on, not a reason to overlook someone. What is most needed is a culture shift away from seeing older workers as ‘hanging on’ and towards recognising the value they already bring to the workforce.

Dame Jools Topp

One half of the Topp Twins, who gave New Zealand permission to be exactly itself

Some performers you applaud and forget.

The Topp Twins you wanted to claim as your own, as a cousin, an aunty, or the pair who once played your local hall.

The news in late May that Dame Jools Topp had died, at home and at 68 with her twin sister Lynda beside her, landed less like celebrity news and more like a loss in the wider family. Her sister's words for it were perfect, and very Topp. "Now she is finally free," Lynda said, "to ride on Pegasus, her winged horse, and round up sheep again with our dad Peter and all her precious dogs."

To understand why a yodelling comedian could matter that much, start where Jools and Lynda started: on a dairy farm near Huntly, two farm kids who grew up singing, riding horses and mucking in.

The accent, the ease on a stage, the bone-deep countryness, none of it was an act. It was just where they were from, and never once apologised for.

What made them remarkable was being funny and fearless at once, a rarer combination than it sounds. Through the 1980s the Topp Twins were on the front line of the arguments that shaped modern New Zealand: the 1981 Springbok Tour protests, the campaign for a nuclear-free Pacific, Homosexual Law Reform. They were openly lesbian decades before it was safe or fashionable, and refused to treat it as a secret. "It was pure honesty about who we were," Jools once put it. "And if you didn't like it you didn't have to come and see the show."

They built a gallery of characters New Zealanders still quote: the genteel menace of Camp Mother and Camp Leader, the rural blokes Ken and Ken with a beer and an opinion. The comedy was sharp but almost never cruel, its own kind of craft. In 2018 the two farm girls

Permission to be rural and clever, queer and beloved, political and warm, all at once and without flinching from Huntly were made Dames Companion together, prompting a great headline about the rebels finally getting their medals.

For a generation who never caught them live, the 2009 documentary The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls did the introducing, winning the People's Choice Award at Toronto and sending audiences out feeling better about their country. Underneath the laughter was the thing they were really offering: permission. Permission to be rural and clever, queer and beloved, political and warm, all at once and without flinching.

What they gave New Zealand is hard to measure, because so much of it has become the air we breathe. A more relaxed idea of who counts as a real Kiwi. A sense that you can hold strong opinions and still make the room laugh. The understanding that a yodel can be a form of national affection. Jools is gone, but the permission she handed out is not. Free to ride on, indeed.

For most of its history, Hamilton has grown out rather than up. Wide suburbs, industrial parks and shopping centres spread steadily across the Waikato, while the city centre remained relatively low-rise.

That could soon change. Plans for a 25-storey mixed-use tower on Victoria Street signal a new phase in Hamilton's evolution, one where height becomes part of the city's identity.

Proposed by Templeton Group and designed by Ignite Architects, the development would rise beside Victoria on the River, creating what the company describes as a "vertical city". The roughly $100 million project includes a 200-room five-star hotel, serviced apartments, branded residences, restaurants, wellness facilities and a public sky bar overlooking the Waikato River. If built, it would comfortably surpass Hamilton's current tallest building and establish a new skyline landmark.

The proposal reflects broader changes shaping the city. Hamilton remains one of New Zealand's fastest-growing urban centres, fuelled by strong population growth, major infrastructure investment and its strategic location within the Auckland– Hamilton–Tauranga "golden triangle".

A council-commissioned study estimates the city will need around 500 additional hotel rooms within five years to meet growing demand from events, conferences, tourism and business travel.

More importantly, the tower may be the beginning rather than the peak of Hamilton's vertical future. Intensification policies, increasing land values and continued investment around the CBD and riverfront are encouraging developers to think upwards. As more residents choose apartment living and commercial demand grows, taller mixed-use developments are likely to become increasingly common. While Hamilton is unlikely to rival Auckland's skyline, a cluster of high-rise buildings could emerge over the next decade, transforming the city's profile.

The tower remains in the proposal stage, with resource consent still to be lodged and construction unlikely before 2028. But regardless of whether this project proceeds exactly as planned; it reflects a city growing in confidence. Things are looking up in Hamilton.

Who pays for the Cove A plan to charge overseas visitors at Cathedral Cove has Hahei debating not whether, but how Walk down the steep track at Hahei on a summer morning and you reach one of the most photographed places in the country: Mautohe Cathedral Cove, where a great arched cavern opens between two beaches and the Pacific glitters through the far side. For as long as anyone can remember it has been free to anyone who walks in. That is now the question hanging over the Coromandel is who should pay to keep it standing.

The proposal comes from central government. Under the Conservation Amendment Bill introduced by Conservation Minister Tama Potaka, the Department of Conservation would gain power to charge international visitors at the country's busiest attractions. Cathedral Cove is on the shortlist alongside Piopiotahi Milford Sound, Aoraki Mount Cook and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, places where overseas visitors make up around 80% of foot traffic. The mooted fee runs $20 to $50, with the cove in the $20 to $40 range. New Zealanders would not be charged.

The scheme could raise tens of millions a year, ringfenced for the tracks, toilets and huts, with the first charges targeted for 2027.

For the Kiwi reader the headline is reassuring: the cove stays free for you. More interesting is what the people who live nearest

make of it, and their answer is not a flat no. A survey by the Hahei Residents and Ratepayers Association found 72% of respondents supported charging international visitors. The argument is not about whether to charge, but how. At a packed community hall, the heat was in the detail. Councillor Flemming Rasmussen supports a charge, noting overseas visitors are often "shocked" entry is free, but wants the money to stay local, not vanish into DOC's vast national estate.

Behind the debate sits a sobering fact: the cove is not the durable postcard it appears. Around 200,000 people visit each year, and the land keeps moving. Storms in 2023 closed the tracks for nearly two years, and a fresh slip in early 2026 undid some repairs. Every reopening now happens in careful consultation with Ngāti Hei, the iwi with mana whenua over Te Whanganui-A-Hei. Back in 2023, kaumātua Joe Davis spoke of visitors ignoring a rāhui: "They think it's open slather... and get that selfie shot."

Almost everyone agrees the days of a free ride are numbered.

What is still being worked out is the part that matters most to locals: whether the money will follow the wear, who holds the gate, and whether a place can be both properly protected and genuinely open. For the rest of us, the reassurance is simple. Next time you make the walk down, the only thing it should cost is the effort of climbing back up.

Falafel tray bake Roasted vegetables and crispy falafel.

Topped with creamy tahini yoghurt dressing and fresh parsley.

Ingredients

• 1 tbsp lemon juice • ½ cup chopped parsley

Method 1. Heat oven to 225°C

• 4 cups cauliflower florets

2. Toss cauliflower, pumpkin and fennel with oil and paprika

• 4 cups pumpkin, chopped

3. Roast for 30 minutes

• 2 tbsp olive oil

4. Shape falafel mixture into balls and place over vegetables

• 2 tsp paprika

5. Roast another 10 minutes

• 1 fennel bulb (or onion), chopped

• 350g prepared falafel mixture • ¼ cup unsweetened natural yoghurt • 2 tbsp tahini

6. Mix yoghurt, tahini and lemon juice, and drizzle over tray bake.

Serving suggestion: Garnish with parsley.

Penne with eggplant caponata Wholemeal penne.

Tossed with rich eggplant,

• 2 tbsp chopped olives • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar

tomato, caper and olive sauce

• Fresh basil or parsley

Ingredients • 300g wholemeal penne • 1 large eggplant, diced • 1 onion, diced • 2 cloves garlic, crushed

• Black pepper

Method 1. Cook the pasta until al dente 2. Brown the eggplant in olive oil 3. Add onion, garlic and capsicum; cook until softened 4. Stir in tomatoes, tomato paste, capers, olives, vinegar and sugar

• 1 red capsicum, diced

5. Simmer for 15–20 minutes

• 400g canned diced tomatoes

6. Combine with pasta.

• 2 tbsp tomato paste

Serving suggestion: Garnish with herbs.

Ingredients • 2 cans cannellini or haricot beans, drained • 1 onion, diced • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 1 tbsp olive oil • 400g crushed tomatoes • 2 tbsp tomato paste • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (reduced salt if possible)

• 1 tsp smoked paprika • 1 tsp mustard • Black pepper

Method 1. Sauté onion in olive oil until soft 2. Add garlic and paprika for 1 minute 3. Stir in tomatoes, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce and mustard 4. Simmer for 10 minutes 5. Add beans and cook another 15 minutes.

Serving suggestion: Serve on wholegrain toast, baked potatoes, or alongside grilled vegetables.

Simply delicious Serves 4

Chicken and chickpea curry Tender chicken, chickpeas and vegetables.

• 1 cup plain unsweetened yoghurt

Simmered in fragrant spices, served over wholesome brown rice.

• ½ cup chopped coriander (optional)

Ingredients

1. Heat oil over low heat and soften the onion

• 2 tbsp canola or olive oil • 1 onion, diced

2. Add garlic, chicken, curry powder and garam masala. Cook for 5 minutes

• 4 cloves garlic, crushed

3. Stir in tomatoes, water and chickpeas

• 750g skinless chicken thigh, diced

4. Simmer for about 30 minutes until the chicken is cooked

• 2 tbsp curry powder

5. Stir through yoghurt and vegetables, then simmer for another 5 minutes

• 2 tsp garam masala • 1 × 400g can chopped tomatoes

• 3 cups mixed vegetables (fresh or frozen)

Method

6. Serve over brown rice.

• 2 cups water

Doctors and researchers encouraged people to spend time in forests to reduce stress and improve wellbeing. The idea is not exercise or hiking for fitness. You don’t need a forest to practise shinrin-yoku. Parks, beaches, gardens, and walking tracks are all good places to go. The key is to slow down and pay attention. Leave headphones behind. Put your phone away if possible and walk at a slower pace.

According to clinical psychologist Nasalifya Namwinga from the Pola Practice in Melbourne, people are often drawn to careers that reflect who they are. Work can feel meaningful because it aligns with personal values and interests. However, this can make it harder to separate identity from occupation.

Labour reporter Simone Stolzoff, author of The Good Enough Job, argues that modern culture has elevated the importance of work to an unrealistic status. According to Stolzoff, many people now look to their jobs for purpose, belonging and self-worth, not just income. He refers to this idea as "workism," a term first coined by journalist Derek Thompson.

While this mindset can feel motivating, it also carries risks.

It can also create constant pressure for work to feel perfect, which often leads to disappointment. He stresses that people hold many roles beyond their job, including being friends, neighbours, and members of a community.

The challenge then becomes how to build a stronger sense of self outside of work. According to Stolzoff, the answer does not lie in dramatic life changes. Instead, he suggests small and consistent actions. Simple habits such as a weekly walk with a friend or a short daily creative activity can help build a more balanced identity over time. Research and clinical experience suggest that hobbies alone are not always the solution. Namwinga explains that the key is understanding personal values.

Stolzoff offers a practical way to rethink work itself. According to his research, viewing a job as an economic relationship can be helpful.

This perspective does not reduce commitment or effort. Instead, it creates space for other parts of life to hold equal importance. He defines a "good enough" job as one that supports the kind of life a person wants to live.

AI boosts polyp detection in

colonoscopy trials

Even in skilled hands, a colonoscopy can miss things.

Estimates from meta-analyses suggest adenoma miss rates of around 20–25% for smaller lesions: roughly one in four small polyps may not be detected on a first pass. If a colonoscopy is a human looking at a screen, could a second set of eyes, trained on tens of thousands of past procedures, help that human see more?

That second set of eyes now exists in the form of computer-aided detection (CADe). As the endoscopist advances the scope, the software analyses the same live video and highlights areas that resemble polyps, typically with an on-screen box or visual cue. It does not diagnose, remove, or decide. It prompts.

New Zealand has been part of the early evidence base. A study from Waitematā Endoscopy reported that adenoma detection rates increased from about 38.5% to 47.9% when CADe was used. A later randomised controlled trial conducted at Waitākere Hospital and published in 2026, involving roughly 776 patients, also found higher adenoma detection with AI assistance. The effect appeared more pronounced in screening colonoscopies, where detection increased from around 68% to 79% in that subgroup.

But the signal is not uniform across all settings. A 2023 systematic review of CADe trials suggests that while controlled studies often show a modest increase in detection, realworld implementation can produce smaller or inconsistent gains.

In some routine practice data, detection rates differ only marginally between AI-assisted and standard procedures. Much of what CADe improves detection of are very small adenomas, and whether this translates into fewer cancers or deaths remains unproven.

That distinction matters. Higher detection rates do not automatically mean better long-term outcomes, particularly if the additional lesions are low-risk or clinically insignificant.

New Zealand, where bowel cancer remains one of the country’s most significant cancer burdens — with roughly 3,000+ diagnoses and around 1,200 deaths annually — operates the National Bowel Screening Programme. For most eligible people, screening begins with an at-home test every two years, with colonoscopy reserved for those who return a positive result.

The programme has been expanding and refining eligibility over time, though exact changes to starting age and rollout timing have been staged and remain subject to policy updates. Equity remains a key challenge, with Māori and Pacific peoples more likely to develop bowel cancer at younger ages and less likely to participate in screening.

The takeaway is not that a clever machine has solved bowel cancer. The test most of us will meet still hinges on turning up: doing the home test when it arrives, and following through if it comes back positive. The AI improves what happens next, but only for those who make it through the door.

The idea that writing things down can help us feel better is old, but the research is more measured than the wellness aisle suggests.

The starting point is psychologist James Pennebaker's 1980s work, in which people wrote about their deepest thoughts and feelings for 15 to 20 minutes over several sessions. Those who did tended to make fewer visits to the campus health centre afterwards than people who wrote about trivial things.

Decades of studies have followed, and the honest summary is that the effect is real but small, and not always easy to repeat.

A 2022 systematic review in Family Medicine and Community Health pooled 20 randomised trials and found journaling produced about a 5% greater reduction in mental-health symptoms than none, with a clearer effect for anxiety than depression.

The reviewers recommend journaling alongside, not instead of, professional support.

If the evidence is modest, the barrier to entry is wonderfully low, and a few approaches have the most support behind them. First, a gratitude list: the most-cited study, by Emmons and McCullough in 2003, found people who wrote a short weekly list of things they were grateful for reported more optimism than those who listed hassles.

If you've watched television over the last few years, you've probably seen advertisements suggesting funerals cost $30,000 or more. Those figures can be alarming. They can also leave people wondering whether they need expensive funeral insurance to protect their family.

The reality is rather different.

The Funeral Directors Association of New Zealand recently surveyed funeral homes across the country to better understand what families are actually paying today. We found that a moderate funeral with around 50 people attending costs, on average, about $11,700 for a cremation and $14,300 for a burial. Of course, every funeral is different, but those figures provide a far more realistic picture than the numbers often used in advertising.

That's one of the reasons we've created Now For Them, a new funeral prepayment plan established by the Funeral Directors Association and available exclusively through our member funeral homes. Waterson’s Funeral Services has been a constant source of care and comfort in Matamata for 122 years.

Now, as the town continues to grow and change, a thoughtful transformation of the funeral home complex is underway.

At the heart of it all is the Rosa Chapel, which has already received some beautiful updates—most notably, a striking schist stone feature wall inside the chapel, with water gently flowing down its surface.

This creates a calm, reflective atmosphere that sets the tone for the entire new development. That same sense of peace and thoughtfulness will carry through every part of the rebuild, shaping a space that truly supports families during difficult times.

The rebuild will be a careful balance of old and new, honouring the past by retaining some of the original features, while introducing modern, purpose-built spaces that enhance comfort, accessibility, and care.

The new complex will feature a spacious reception area providing plenty of room for families and friends to come together and celebrate the lives of their loved ones.

There’ll also be a specially designed casket display, giving families the chance to make personal and considered choices. A state-of-the-art mortuary and private family consultation rooms will ensure the highest standards of care and sensitivity. There will also be a dedicated space where families can explore a beautiful selection of headstones, urns, and memorial keepsakes—making it easier to find something truly special to remember their loved one. For those tender final moments, a private, secure viewing room will be

available around the clock, offering families the time, privacy, and peace they need.

To complement the peaceful setting, a private garden is being created behind the chapel. This quiet, thoughtfully designed space will offer families a gentle place to reflect, share memories, and find comfort.

Guiding this transformation are Ray and Pam Beswick, who have supported the Matamata community with care and compassion for 20 years. They understand how important it is to continue evolving their services to meet the needs of a growing town.

“As our community grows, so too does the need for us to offer a complete service that supports every part of saying goodbye,” says Pam. To provide uninterrupted care while the rebuild is underway, Watersons Funeral Services will be operating as normal from the present site. This means loved ones can remain in Matamata, and all services will continue as usual during the construction period.

Wherever possible, local contractors have been engaged to help bring this vision to life, reinforcing Ray and Pam’s ongoing commitment to supporting not just families in grief, but also the local community and economy.

Although the rebuild is a significant project, the heart of Waterson’s remains unchanged: offering care, dignity, and respect to every family.

It’s very much business as usual—with meaningful changes unfolding just around the corner.
