Welcome to Distinctive Designs, the architectural design magazine with a very simple aim – to bring ideas to life.
Our goal is for each issue to display examples of the most creative and impressive contemporary residential architecture in the country, celebrating all the aspects of home shaping the world we want to live in.

04. Terracotta Warrior
A Terracotta Warrior is a replica solider from the Terracotta Army with life sized warriors discovered in 1974 by local farmers in the Shaanxi province of China. Lottin Point by Tony Ogle
The Archival Inkjet Print is a very large picture printed onto archival paper. Tony painted the Pohutukawa trees at Lottin Point, which sits above East Cape in the North Island. Project Summary
Clyde Crib, designed by Hamish Muir Architect Director at Mason and Wales Architects, is a contemporary take on early Central Otago miners’ huts and Agrarian farm buildings.
The roof form, a simple extruded gable, is clad in metal tray roofing, with a scale and rhythm that provides a strong graphic form within the landscape.
Concept
Clyde Crib is situated in Picnic Creek, a rural-residential subdivision on a terrace overlooking the Clutha River in the small Central Otago township of Clyde. The project brief was to build a holiday retreat for a Dunedin couple that could also accommodate their close-knit family, including three married daughters with their husbands, 10 grandchildren and family dogs.
Clyde Crib, designed by Hamish Muir Architect Director at Mason and Wales Architects, who also happens to be the client’s son-in-law, is a contemporary take on early Central Otago miners’ huts and agrarian farm buildings.
The house design includes a generous open-plan kitchen, dining and living area with outdoor terraces and courtyards connected to a master suite, with three additional bedrooms, a separate self-contained bunkroom, drive through garage and outdoor kitchen, as well as master planning and provision for possible future expansion.
Material selections suit the local vernacular with traditional construction methodology but employing the latest available technologies for high performance. The roof form, a simple extruded gable, is clad in metal tray roofing, with a scale and rhythm that provides a strong graphic form within the landscape.
Exterior wall cladding is traditional board and batten profiles, also oversized in scale, to provide pattern and texture for visual relief from the relatively simple and large building forms.
Outdoor and indoor fireplaces are faced in blackened rolled steel for a heavy-duty and no-nonsense aesthetic. Cedar timber sarking and linings are used internally where possible, to provide texture, character and warmth and relate to the exterior materials.
The rest of the interior has strong clean lines with rustic earthy tones, and provides a backdrop for comfortable, easy living in this successful multi-generational holiday retreat.

Before building their dream home on land, the owners built one on the Ocean & called it home while they sailed around the South Pacific for 10 years. This lifestyle has now heavily influenced the style of home on Jackson Rise.

Sculptured splendour
Beneath a sculptural copper roof that crests and curves like waves is a home that is expansive yet intimate, crisp yet cosy.
The clients wanted gezelligheid (the Dutch term for conviviality, friendly, enjoyable and cosy), and that’s precisely what they’ve got.
The roof, a complex feat of construction, rests atop a concrete structure with myriad angles that create interest for the owners as they move through the 405sqm home.
Following the curved roofline is an expertly crafted ply ceiling, resulting in a deep sense of warmth and intimacy.
The warmth is further enhanced by the engineered timber flooring and, more practically, by in-slab heating throughout the ground floor.
Expansive curved windows fill the four-bedroom, three-bathroom home with light.
Multiple living spaces, inside and out, provide plenty of spots to relax and make entertaining a breeze.
The practical yet elegant kitchen spills into the dining room and then onto the patio, which is sheltered by another of those astonishing copper waves.
This one-of-a-kind outdoor room further links the interior of this special home to the garden and stream beyond.
From the foundations, the precast concrete walls, to the complex roof structure, the accuracy of this builder is clear. This building is inspiring; it features a clever design, meticulous attention to detail and an accurate construction.
The breath-taking natural flow of the home really is what gives it it’s distinctive design.
It’s well known that quality and perfection are hallmarks of the work of the Clive Barrington Construction team and this result certainly endorses the reputation.
Building the home designed by South Architects was, as Clive puts it, “Very demanding work, with its audacious freeform copper roof – but that’s what we specialise in and thrive on”.
The home won the Supreme Award at the Canterbury Registered Master Builders’ 2021 House of the Year competition.
Clive’s comments are echoed in the judges’ citation, saying, “Combining design with functionality and excellent workmanship has resulted in this fantastic home”.
While this home created some major construction challenges, the builder relished in delivering a home of supreme quality and merit.
“From the foundations, the precast concrete walls, to the complex roof structure, the accuracy of this builder is clear. This building is inspiring; it features a clever design, meticulous attention to detail and an accurate construction,” the judges say.
Clive Barrington Construction celebrated 40 years in business in 2021. Working alongside its clients and internationally recognised architects, the company has built many of Canterbury’s most admired homes and achieved awardwinning results.
It continues to be a formidable force in a competitive industry basing its ethos on honest old school values and quality craftsmanship.
This has enabled the team to repeatedly bring the clients’ visions and the architects’ designs to life, exceeding expectations time and time again.
After many successful years at the Registered Master Builders House of the Year, both regionally and nationally, the company had a break from entering after being awarded a Platinum Award.
The Platinum Award recognises builders who have won five National Category Awards – Clive Barrington Construction had 13.
As 2021 rolled around the company thought it was about time to front up again at the awards with a sample of its recent work.
The rest is history, winning the RMB 2021 Supreme House of the Year Award for their functional and well-crafted home, and also being awarded a Gold Award, alongside taking out the Resene New Home over $2 million category.

The latest trends in kitchen design
One of the most common things to renovate in the house is the kitchen.
If you’re renovating to sell, Super Innovations New Zealand recommends you renovate using standard mid-range materials and to avoid customising the renovation too significantly.
If you’re renovating to increase the look and functionality of the kitchen, Super Renovations recommends going for more quality products to enjoy your kitchen long-term.
It’s good to re-modernise the kitchen every 10-15 years as kitchen design trends are always changing.
Nicky Claridge is the director and head designer at NC Design. “The biggest trend at the moment is a full timber kitchen with accents of white or colour,” she says. Nicky imagines the timber kitchen trend will only get bigger and will be here for quite some time. “The cost of the design depends on the size of the project and product choices, and there’s no magic formula to calculate the cost of a new kitchen.”
“One thing for sure is the layout of the cabinets and positioning of the appliances should be the priority when it comes to a new kitchen.”
Another contemporary design trend is benchtops made from porcelain. “Porcelain has amazing properties as it’s such a versatile product to work with.”
The reasons being: it doesn’t stain, scratch, or take on smells, is easy to clean, offers a large range of colours, and is heat, fire, and water-resistant.

As homeowners spend more time at home during the pandemic, many individuals are increasingly looking to create an oasis of wellbeing at the heart of their home – somewhere that they can enjoy as a private retreat to de-stress and unwind.
Among the most popular trends when it comes to home improvements, investing in a well-designed bathroom is one of the best ways for maximizing the potential of both your home’s value and your quality of life.
Aesthetically in 2022, design preferences in bathrooms will continue to be more contemporary and futuristic in style.
This speaks of clean lines, minimal detailing and the warmth and texture of natural finishes,
which feels very European in style and scale.
Specifically, the influence of natural and organic materials is expected to increase in popularity in bathroom design over the next three years; a significant departure from a National Kitchen & Bath Association 2019 study, where this same design style ranked 10th.
“We expect designs for both the kitchen and bath to continue trending toward a more modern,
organic feel that is both streamlined and adaptable,” says Bill Darcy, NKBA CEO.
Bringing the outdoors in, is indeed a rising trend in bathroom design – be it larger windows framing lush green foliage, or a skylight to illuminate the room, making the space feel that much taller.
Though nowhere, does a space achieve more peak transparency than with a ceiling-to-floor glass shower; natural light washing in and around.
In 2022, connection between water and wellbeing has never been easier with waterfall shower heads and walk-in showers to replace bulkier units.
Interestingly, traditional design, which has continually been voted as one of the top three bathroom styles for over a decade, is now projected to be one of the least popular.
While large, luxurious tiled showers remain an exercise in crisp modernity, green plant walls are what’s trending right now – and they’re particularly functional in wet areas, given the steam and damp helps to create the humid conditions that these plants thrive in.Allowing you the sense of being at one with nature.
Surprisingly, at the other end of the spectrum of contemporary bathroom concepts lies home automation.
Whilst it may seem to directly contradict the trend of keeping things au naturel, smart technology promises to put the control at your fingertips and to make your bathroom work better for you.
From de-misting mirrors, integrated charging and USB ports, LED temperature displays and automatic hand-wipe sensors, the bathroom is a haven for smart technology. Who could resist?
A seamless bathroom design can help you fulfil your everyday needs with efficiency as well as giving you a relaxing space to unwind after a long day.
Keep in mind, bathrooms can be expensive to renovate and replace, which is why it’s important to get it right the first time round.
Whilst some trends come and go, some will stand the test of time. Though that green plant wall might be aesthetically appealing, it also sounds like a beacon for creepy crawlies in the shower – taking the return to nature theme a bit too literally!
So long as you keep functionality and durability in mind, you can’t really go wrong.

What are the essential elements to incorporate into any outdoor living space?
The essentials are practical things like a seating area that is big enough to incorporate an outdoor dining table and a barbeque that people can move around effortlessly.
Shelter from the rain and protection from the sun in the form of an outdoor umbrella, pergola or shade sail.
Privacy is also very important, especially in high density residential zones. This can be created with careful strategic planting, screens and other hard landscaping features. Important but not essential is outdoor lighting and irrigation.
Best piece of advice for those embarking on a garden makeover?
Work with a designer to help you get those ideas out of your head and onto paper.
Get a master plan created personally for you, so you can work on it yourself as funds and time become available, or get priced up by a reputable landscape contractor.
Remember the plan is only as good as the execution and a good designer can put you in contact with the right contractors.
What is the most common mistake people make when renovating their outdoor space?
People under estimate the amount of time, work and money it takes to create a great looking outdoor space.
Most people think they can do the work themselves instead of paying for a professional. They tend to make costly mistakes and end up with a really bad result.
It is also common to see cost cutting on essential elements such as good drainage and ground prep.
What is the key to creating a stylish and functional outdoor living area?
Keep the design simple but above all functional; don’t fall for fads or quick fixes. Get a plan which really excites you and fits your budget. You’re better to choose high-end materials that last the test of time.
What are some simple steps to enhance a deck from drab to fab?
Simply, clean sand and stain especially if it’s looking worst for wear. A fresh coat of stain can do wonders, but do a test first! Dress up the deck with stylish pots and beautiful plants and outdoor furniture.

Dunedin townhouse illustrates how Design + Garden Landscapes can transform any property
The original garden was dominated by a steep asphalt drive leading to a lower garage which had since been converted into a sleepout.
With this change, the whole use of the space has altered, so the garden design was inspired by the need for easy and more formal access to the house, as well as a dedicated level area out from the house for entertaining.
The brief from the client was both for a more formal entrance but to also close off access to what was the garage. This was compounded by the fact that the clients were keen mountain bikers and needed an innovative way of getting bikes up and down any new formal entrance steps. This was solved with the use of a narrow ramp installed alongside the newly formed entrance steps to easily wheel bikes up and down.
We didn’t want a plain boring ramp, instead, we formed this out of a series of laser-cut Black steel sheets placed with a series of lights behind the panels to illuminate the access steps at night.
To accompany the new steel ramp each step is formed with a similar black steel riser and placed with a Stoneset surface forming the new formal entrance to the house. Either side of the entrance steps, clean plastered concrete block walls retain the existing levels of the property and form raised gardens to soften the harder elements. A new entertaining area was then formed with inbuilt seating placed off the lower concrete block walls, with a new surface laid using Stoneset, to link in with the new steps.

What’s hot in home design
With more people than ever before continuing to work from home and with the increased time spent at home during lockdown, interior design in 2022 will be reassessing the functionality and versatility of spaces.
This year we have seen that the functionality of the home has shifted, with kitchens becoming home offices, living rooms turning into yoga studios and bathrooms becoming a private retreat away from the stresses of daily life.
“On a global level, the pandemic has seen most of us spend more time than ever in our homes and that phenomenon is set to continue,” says Neale Whitaker, interior design expert and Luxaflex National Brand Partner.
“There will inevitably be a renewed focus on home offices, second living spaces, dining areas and home theatres.”
Biophilic design
“From an aesthetic perspective, we will see a continued emphasis on what is known as biophilic design – seeking ways to bring nature indoors. Long periods of lockdown have intensified our need to connect with nature in our homes,” Neale adds.
“At its simplest biophilic design is our love of houseplants, but at its most sophisticated, it explores the relationship between indoors and outdoors and the creation of outdoor rooms.
“This concept is also reflected in the current predominance of natural colours like greens, browns, ochre and natural materials like wood and stone,” says Neale.
Workable living spaces
The need to create workable living spaces in the home will also reflect the colours, patterns and textures that are incorporated in the home.
Contrasting textures add to the aesthetic interest of a room. It’s what we generally refer to as ‘layering’. Layering has become especially important in recent years with the popularity of neutral interiors or interiors where one colour predominates.
“When an interior designer creates an interior scheme, they will generally start with a materials palette or mood board that brings together textures and materials that work in harmony together, such as brass and velvet, timber and linen, rattan and leather – and so on.
“Layering can also apply to window furnishings. A popular trend is floor-to-ceiling sheer curtains used in conjunction with blinds.”
Colour trends
Trending colours for 2022 particularly for living rooms, will include shades of brown such as caramel, tan, chocolate and latte shades, which are an alternative to grey-based neutrals that have dominated for several years.
Shades of olive and eucalyptus are another prominent colour palette.
Light and privacy
Another design trend is harnessingthe power that light and privacy play in homes.
“Light can have a transformative effect on our living spaces. In the northern hemisphere the focus is often on adding light sources to counter a lack of natural light for much of the year.
“We have the opposite problem. We have an abundance of natural light that can sometimes be harsh and intrusive.
“Diffusing and filtering light through window furnishings like blinds, shutters and sheer curtains gives us control over light and allows us to create not only privacy but mood and ambience in our living spaces,” explains Neale.
