Welcome to the CINEMA, INSTITUTE, AND MUSEUM OF MEDIA ARTS LOS ANGELES. Nestled in the heart of Chinatown, the building makes an immediate impression with its asymmetrical and sculptural design. Its form, however, is responsive to the sloping ground it sits atop. A gentle slope takes visitors to the second floor, where the main gallery resides. The building is composed of three horizontal stacked masses but divided into two vertical zones. On the west wing is the Institute, featuring a library and educational spaces on the second floor, with a café. retail area, and outdoor public gathering space on the first. This wing’s elevated and angled glass façade floods the interior with daylight and offers views of the private outdoor gathering space, a venue for galas and events. The east wing houses the museum’s MOMA exhibition on the first floor, with digital galleries and screening rooms above. This section is purposefully designed to minimize sunlight exposure, preserving the integrity of digital displays and artifacts.

Structurally, CINMA is built entirely of stacked CLT wall panels, with the second floor

cantilevered to create a visually dynamic profile. The walls are angled with purpose: one at 45 degrees to invite sunlight, and another angled at 36 degrees to reject it, balancing illumination and shade strategically. The ground floor, hidden from street access, accommodates administrative and storage functions while supporting the irregularly

stacked volumes above. Approaching the main entrance, visitors pass filtration ponds that flank the path, collecting rainwater from the corten-steel facade and channeling it

into a filtration system beneath the slope. These sustainable features integrate seamlessly with the building’s design. Selective wall openings allow for soft-diffused light, while

the glass blocks create a soft inner glow at night, casting intriguing shadows and inviting curiosity from passersby.

THE CULTURE HOUSE is a vibrant community hub dedicated to empowering and celebrating the rich tapestry of Chicano heritage. Our mission is to provide a supportive platform for members within this community, fostering cultural exchange and artistic expression.

The culture house is also home to renowned artist Diego Rivera’s mural of A Dream of a Sunday Afternoon, serving as an inspiration for controlling the narrative of Latin voices, commemorating the past and building a brighter future.

Viewing perforations are placed so visitors can view community murals from every point on the bridge.

The tunnel entrance is also aligned with the path, acting as a telescope showcasing Diego Rivera’s mural continuously as visitors approach the building.

Asmara’s complicated history of independence leaves its marks across the city. ASMARA’S LIVING GHOSTS is a project dedicated to, quite literally, illuminating the parts of Asmara’s history that remain buried. This is a visitor’s center located in the center of Asmara that acts as a guide for exposing purely Eritrean landmarks from its peak. The visitor can go up the towers in the city center and view a series of light nodes that demarcate these hidden landmarks.

In the middle of Downtown Los Angeles sits LA’S (NOT-SOSECRET) SECRET GARDEN: a community center that serves as a zen haven amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday work life in the urban atmosphere. The Secret Garden is perched atop the Broadway Trade Center, where you can find a spa, library, greenhouse, and cafe.

The buildings are weaved around three interconnected gardens: a tea garden, an herb garden, and a floral garden. The garden paths break into the architecture of the buildings, allowing a pacifist intrusion of the calming exterior to the indoors. The village-like buildings break the urban fabric of downtown, creating a truly unique experience that makes one forget where they are without completely excluding the city views.

Los Angeles is home to an overwhelmingly large population of homeless minors in America. They are in need of a safer home, when their family’s home is no longer available. Almost all homeless teenagers are highly victim to substance abuse, survival sex, mental health disorders, and lack of education. Through LIVE, LAUNCH, WORK, this program would be able to offer youth services beyond housing that could help youth get back on their feet and become reacquainted with the city.

No longer will they have to see Los Angeles as a hearth of harm and danger, and can rewrite their narrative into living in a city that nurtures them and encourages them explore their passions and goals. The co-op houses ages 12-25, who have been victim to homelessness. There is a low-barrier housing model to allow for easy move-in and to help as many kids as possible. The project consists of three different types of units: a double, a full single, and a family unit, to accommodate all different situations.

In Vietnam, we partnered with the University of Architecture Ho Chi Minh City (UAH), with a similar approach. First, a documentation of social housing projects, colloquially known as KTTs, followed by revitalization. Our aim was not to impose a new way of living onto locals, but to create a safer, cleaner space for them to continue their ways of life in. Through our redesign efforts, which included integrating micro-dwellings into the building, now boasts improved ventilation, lighting, while retaining its intrinsic charm and fostering stronger community engagement.

" ' 8 ' +9" !"/

Here are some of my favorite pieces of various media. I enjoy color pencil and graphite primarily. These are some of the pieces I did at Laguna College of Art & Design, and my own personal projects. Midnight Fish is a concept design for a late night restaurant/jazz bar. It is, in essence, a personifcation of my passions: a love for jazz, and an homage to my first job working at a sushi restaurant. I challenged myself to create a vibe for a fictional restaurant through its “packaging”, i.e menu, plates, business cards, cutlery, etc. More of my work can be found on my website! mariyai.com

!" $,& ' , 7 In Fall 2023, I embarked abroad across Asia to learn more about Asian architecture, landscape, and urbanism. We visited five countries in five months, working with students at Hong Kong University (HKU) and University of Architecture Ho Chi Minh City (UAH) along the way. Each day we would do site visits, documenting in forms of sketches and photographs to internalize everything we saw. Here are just a few of my favorite sketches and photographs throughout the trip.
