50 Years Forward-Genetics for Tomorrow
Welcome to Nappan for our 50th Sale. These days there are few ventures that survive the test of time, but the vision and goals of the Maritime Beef Testing Society have done just that. Perhaps one of the best examples of Maritime cooperation, the goal is the same as the very first test started in 1966 when 15 bulls (5 from each province) were tested and, upon completion, were offered for sale at a successful field day in April 1977. Those early years were made possible by the efforts of three provincial beef specialists and the Canada Experimental Farm. They all saw a need to improve the genetics of our Maritime beef breeds by providing an opportunity to evaluate bulls all on the same level playing field, so to speak, by providing the same conditions, feed, and management, to see which animals performed best.
Several thousand bulls of almost every beef breed known have been tested over the years, with the highest performing bulls being selected for the annual sale, always held on the first Saturday of April. The test station program has provided a one-stop shopping event where commercial producers can select from the best for the bull that best suits their needs and improves their farm programs.
The society was incorporated in 1970 and a board of directors conducts the testing program which has seen many changes over the years. The program's success can be credited to the efforts of many people who have served as Presidents, Herds Persons, Breeders, Board Members, Provincial Beef Specialists, Managers, Sale Workers and most importantly, the buyers who year after year make it all work. It is fitting that many of these people are being recognized at a special 50th Banquet being held the night before our 2023 Sale at the Amherst Golf Club.
A lot has changed over the years. Early on, performance and growth were the main goals of the test. Today while still very important, these traits are joined by measurements made possible by the latest in technology, some of which are not available east of Ontario. Ultrasound measurements give us a look at carcass quality, rib eye size, fat composition, marbling, EPD'S, semen testing, and vet evaluations. All are tools available to help select the bull we need. Feed Efficiency, or RFI, is the latest tool compliments of Vytelle’s Grow Safe system. This system allows us to know exactly how much feed each bull consumes, and no one else in the Maritimes can provide that information, including Quebec and Ontario. Accuracy is very important, and this system will eventually be used for animal gains as bulls are weighed every time they go for a drink of water.
Wow! We have come a long way. The station has been and continues to be a leading factor in improving the Maritime cattle industry. The result? It is evident when we compare today's cattle to those tested 50 years ago
The Test Station commits to continue programs to improve the cattle industry in Eastern Canada. One can only wonder what the next 50 years will bring.

DEFINITIONS, TERMS & CONDITIONS
These terms are applicable to all animals described within this Catalogue except where specifically noted for Yearling Bulls described within this Catalogue or Replacement Heifers described within this Catalogue.
ON TEST WEIGHT
OFF TEST WEIGHT
The weight taken on November 9, 2022, after the bulls completed the normal adjustment period and started on official test (recorded in pounds)
The weight on completion of test, that being the weight taken March 1, 2023. (recorded in pounds)
(BW) Birth weight (recorded in pounds)
AVERAGE DAILY GAIN (ADG)
AVERAGE DAILY GAIN INDEX (ADG IN)
Total gain while on test divided by 112 days.
Is the ADG expressed as a percentage for all bulls on test of that breed.
EXAMPLE: An ADG index of 115 indicates that the bull had a ADG 15% above the average of all bulls of that breed.
WDA Average Weight Per Day of Age Gain
WDA IN
Is the WDA expressed as a percentage for all bulls on test of that breed.
EXAMPLE: An WDA index of 115 indicates that the bull had a WDA 15% above the average of all bulls of that breed.
ADJUSTED YEARLING WEIGHT (ADJ YW)
RESIDUAL FEED INTAKE (RFI)
A MBTS calucated Yearling weight based off of the March 1st, 2023 weigh in.
Residual feed intake (RFI) is a measure of feed efficiency. It is the difference between the expected feed intake of the animal based on its body weight and growth rate, and what they actually consume. More efficient animals eat less than expected and have a negative or low RFI. Less efficient animals eat more than expected and have a positive or high RFI.
Heritability of RFI is about 40%, and is independent of other production traits. Selecting for lower RFI will decrease feed intake with no detrimental effects on growth or size of the animal.
AVERAGE BACK FAT (BF)
The ultrasonic measurement of fat cover in millimeters and gives an indication of the relative back fat cover on bulls in the Sale. The average on the SALE BULLS is 5.26 mm so buyers can compare bulls to this average.
RUMP Rump fat measured in millimetres (Measurements taken in early February)
SCOT Scrotal Circumference in centimetres ( Measurements taken mid-February)
SEMEN TESTING
Unless designated as "Deferred," all bulls in the Sale have been semen tested and have passed.
DEFERRED Bulls that have been recommended for semen re-evaluation after the initial test.
CALVING EASE SCORE
A rating assigned by the breeder to indicate the ease of calving. Rating indicated by the following letters:
U Unassisted
E
Easy Pull
M Mal Presentation
S Surgical
RIB EYE (ADJ REA)
H
Hard Pull
V Voluntary Pull
The Rib Eye area gives an indication of overall carcass muscling. Rib Eye is measured using Real Time Ultrasound. The "scan" is taken at the grading site between the 12th and 13th ribs. In grading, Rib Eye area and fat cover are used to estimate lean meat yield, measured in square inches low = 12.4 sq. in. and under
Average = 12.5 sq in - 14.3 sq in.
High = 14.4 sq in and up
MARBLING - % OF INTRAMUSCULAR FAT(ADJ IMF)
Marbling is an indication of intramuscular fat. Marbling is measured using Real Time Ultrasound. The "scan" is taken at the grading site between the 12th and 13th rib. The following table correlates the percentage of intramuscular fat to the Canadian Grading System.
Single A (A) = 1.0 - 3.9
Double A (AA) = 4.0 - 4.9
Triple A (AAA) = 5.0 - 7.9
Canada Prime = 8.0 - 11.0
(EPD)
BIRTH WEIGHT (BW)
EPD
CALVING EASE (CE)
EPD
WEANING WEIGHT (WW) EPD
YEARLING WEIGHT (YW) EPD
MATERNAL MILK (MILK) EPD
BIO STARS
An EPD (Expected Progeny Difference) is an estimated average number for a particular animal's trait. Those traits are things like: birth weight; calving ease; weaning weight; yearling weight and maternal milk. EPDs are not absolute figures; they are estimates based on averages. EPDs are based on the animal's own performance and pedigree records as well as those of its sire, grandsire, and siblings and of course, offspring. One thing to keep in mind is the EPDs can only be used to compare within breeds. Each breed has its own average values for EPDs.
EPD's are current as of approximately March 3rd, 2023 is expressed as a percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in the ease with which a sire's calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers
A bull's birth weight EPD shows the expected difference in average birth weight (pounds) for his progeny. Positive values signify heavier than average birth weights for that breed, whereas negative values signify lighter birth weights.
A weaning weight EPD shows the ability of the calf to grow between birth and weaning, expressed in pounds of gain.
A yearling weight EPD value shows the ability of a bull's offspring to grow from birth to one year of age, expressed in pounds of gain.
Maternal milk EPD is one that signifies the ability of a sire's daughter to provide the calf with milk and mothering ability expressed as pounds of calf at weaning time.
BIO star is a new tool that allows you to compare the BIO$ of bulls at a glance, using an easyto-interpret 5-star scale. The more stars a bull has, the more profitable he is expected to be. The star system relates to the percentile ranking of the bull within the test group. For example, a 5-star bull is in the top 10% of the test group.
TOTAL MIXED RATION Indicates the bulls were fed on a silage-based Total Mixed Ration.
SALE SELECTION Based on the combination of the Global Performance Index and consignor confirmation of sale interest. The Sale Committee chooses the leading bull for each breed.
