LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear friends, 2021 was a landmark year. While most schools in the Dominican Republic remained closed or operating at limited capacity, Mariposa programs expanded. We opened a second campus - The Mariposa Mountain School at Finca Alta Gracia, we launched an innovative book series for early readers, and we ramped up our environmental science and sports programming using the outdoors as our classroom.

The past few years have driven home just how crucial safe spaces are. Millions of children were out of school with no place to go and we were called upon to do more for our girls, their families and the community.

In the town of Cabarete, where watersports rule, we were equipped with stand up paddle boards, surfboards and kiteboards. The ocean and her waterways were a safe haven for the Mariposas. Paddling in the lagoons, the girls could be heard singing and laughing while they learned about ecology, completely immersed in the natural beauty of their country.

High in the mountains above Jarabacoa, the children who had limited educational opportunities, now enjoy a beautiful gathering space to learn and grow at our new Mountain School.

We launched the Mariposa Primeros Lectores book series to support early readers across the country in their literacy journey, raising $30,000 to print and distribute 10,000 books to all of the schools in our community.

A return to normalcy for us also meant taking a leadership role in health and safety measures. We provided free sessions for families to learn about vaccination options and transportation to clinics.

We hosted a summer camp for the ages. Girls learned to ride bikes, spent long afternoons at the pool, played basketball and baseball, surfed, practiced yoga, caught up on their studies and planned for their futures.

24 Mariposa girls from the classes of 2020 and 2021 graduated in a small, emotional ceremony on our campus. At the same time, we welcomed in 40 new Mariposa girls to begin their journey.

While it’s important to celebrate these accomplishments, it’s equally important to recognize our heartache.

Two of our 14 year old Mariposa girls dropped out of programs and left home to marry. These setbacks feel crushing, but also a strong reminder of how desperately our work is needed.

Your support and confidence has allowed us to keep hundreds of girls on course to ending generational poverty. Together, we’re changing lives and destinies. MARIPOSA GIRLS ARE CHANGING THE GAME

NAOMI

Sujeidy began Mariposa programs at just five years old, tagging along with her older sisters and aunts. She started swimming lessons and immediately took to the water. Our littlest Mariposa gained so much confidence and became one of our biggest personalities. Over the years, Sujeidy became a strong swimmer and took advantage of every possible opportunity to participate in watersports. At 18, she’s now an avid surfer and kiter and champion for aspiring female athletes.

Naomi grew up in Mariposa programs. At 7 years old, she was terrified of the water, but she slowly overcame her fear and became one of our star swimmers. Naomi participated in years of water safety training and fell in love with surfing. With her kind personality, Naomi always supported and encouraged her peers in overcoming any fear of learning to swim. She now works at the Center teaching swimming lessons to the new generation of Mariposa girls.

NINA Nina comes from a family that is no stranger to water sports. She grew up kiteboarding with her two brothers, world champion, Ariel Corniel and Olympic medalist Adeuri Corniel. As the Mariposa kite team leader, Nina has grown into an incredible coach and mentor, helping the girls build confidence and change the lives of other local girls just like her. Nina is kind, thoughtful and looked up to by her peers, a shining example of leadership in her local community.

GROWING UP POOR IN CABARETE OFTEN MEANS NEVER LEARNING TO SWIM. IMAGINE BEING A LOCAL CHILD IN A BEACHY, TOURIST COMMUNITY, UNABLE TO FULLY ENJOY THE OCEAN, RIVERS OR OTHER NATURAL WONDERS OF YOUR OWN COUNTRY. At Mariposa, we’re changing that narrative with our swimming and watersports program. The Cabarete economy thrives on watersports and local children are left out of the job market and community building activities simply because they do not have access to the many pools to learn to swim. At the Mariposa Center for Girls, the pool is at the heart of our campus and program participants begin formal swim instruction at 7 years old.

Whether it be the thrill of catching air with a high flying kite, riding their first wave, taking in the tranquility of a morning stand up paddle or simply melting away stress with a relaxing swim in the pool, the Mariposa girls are able to fully enjoy, participate and be included in the Cabarete community.

Wanting to learn how to surf, Pamela visited Cabarete when she was 19 years old. She fell in love with the sport and the lifestyle so much so that she decided to stay.

Working as Mariposa’s graphic designer, Pamela had a first hand view of our girls and their potential. Our much talked about surfing program began with Pamela and a small group of girls on Saturday mornings and now has become a highlight of our summer programming. Her love of the ocean is contagious and being a part of the surfing program is something that many Mariposa girls aspire to.

“My favorite part of teaching the Mariposa girls is that we are opening a new door to them… one that is often limited due to cost and cultural barriers. I love to see how surfing boosts their self esteem. It keeps them healthy, they learn how to appreciate mother nature, it calms them just like a good therapy or yoga session, and also can affect their future through jobs and various opportunities!”

Over 25 years ago, Tony was introduced to windsurfing through his cousin. He never looked back. Obsessed with the sport, Tony perfected his craft by watching any videos he could get his hands on. Two years after he first got on the water, Tony was sponsored and on the professional circuit. His success allowed him to travel internationally and landed him a job as the Water Sports Director at Camp Chateagay in New York State. When Tony is not in the States, he is sharing his knowledge of water safety and water sports with our girls.

Growing up in Cabarete, Alex was introduced to the ocean through fishing with his father and brother. Since the age of 7, the three of them spent countless hours exploring the water. It didn’t take long for him to want more adventure, which resulted in him learning how to surf. Always challenging himself, Alex participates in surf racing and stand up paddle board competitions.

When not on a board, he resorts to his pastime- and can be found spearfishing along the shores of Cabarete!

“Teaching girls to be independent and safe in the water is a great joy. Knowing that I can have a big impact is special- many girls here would not know how to swim if it wasn’t for the Mariposa swim program.”

EMPOWERING GIRLS TO PROTECT OUR OCEANS WITH 11TH HOUR RACING 11th Hour Racing works with the sailing community and maritime industries to advance solutions and practices that protect and restore the health of our ocean.

11th Hour Racing has been investing in the Mariposa girls for several years, providing support in helping them become our community’s ocean stewards, sponsoring watersports programs and encouraging the next generation of marine scientists.

2021 was challenging for everyone and this year, 11th Hour Racing, went above and beyond to provide additional operating support to help Mariposa best meet the needs of our girls.

Environmental advocacy is especially important to us as girls and women are disproportionately affected by climate change all over the world. Empowering girls to advocate for their local environment affects systemic change, because they have the unique power to influence their families and communities with small day-to-day actions and share important, scientific information that can help spread more sustainable practices and biocentric viewpoints.

For girls to lead the charge in ocean advocacy, healthy bodies and minds come first. We are grateful to 11th Hour Racing for their continued investment and faith in the girls of Cabarete.

BUILDING CONNECTIONS TO PROTECT THE MANGROVES

WHAT ARE MANGROVES AND WHY DO THEY MATTER? Mangroves are small, shrubby trees that grow in a tangle of roots along the coastlines of the Dominican Republic. They are critical to the ecosystem in providing refuge for birds and serving as a key buffer against storm surges and rising sea levels. Unfortunately, the country has lost more than a third of its mangroves in just the past 50 years. With 70% of the country’s population at severe risk for environmental disasters, mangrove protection is one of the most critical ways to combat climate change.

In addition to providing generous financial support, 11th Hour Racing seeks to bring like-minded organizations together to connect on common ground and share how we can further build momentum and enthusiasm around environmental stewardship.

This year, they helped facilitate a collaboration with Fundación Ecológica Maguá (a Seacology project), a local organization working in regenerative practices to restore coral reefs and endemic plants. The Mariposa girls learned all about mangroves, how they help protect the island and best practices for bringing back endemic plants in our region.

BUILDING WITH ECO-BRICKS

Single-use plastics are an environmental threat everywhere, but especially in coastal communities where there is a high risk of that trash ending up in the ocean. Nearly ten years ago, Mariposa began developing “eco-bricks”, which are plastic bottles stuffed with compacted soft plastic trash to form solid “bricks” that can be used to build many simple, highly functional structures. Through several feasibility studies, we built benches at all of the local public schools in town and a small pavilion at The Mariposa Center for Girls with the completed bottles made entirely from repurposed trash!

WORKING WITH THE OCEAN CONSERVANCY & INTERCOASTAL CLEANUP TO KEEP PLASTIC WASTE OUT OF THE SEA. The pandemic has exacerbated the problem as the consumption of single use plastics has skyrocketed. The trash really started to pile up, posing a huge threat to the environment. As a first line of defense, the Mariposa environmental group took action and called on the community to make “eco-bricks” compensating them 20 pesos for each brick.

The enthusiasm and support for this project has been unbelievable and through a generous donation from The Ocean Conservancy and the Intercoastal Cleanup, Mariposa has been able to grow this innovative program by conducting more feasibility studies in building sound structures, hosting community training workshops and providing income to people making, and building with, the “bricks”.

MINDFULNESS & MEDITATION WITH THE YOGA EFFECT Yoga and meditation have a wealth of benefits for both the body and the mind including enhancing concentration and memory, improving emotional regulation and managing anxiety. Living in extreme poverty is stressful and we know that our regular practice helps to alleviate some of that stress, enabling our girls to increase their focus and perform better in school.

Through a generous donation from The Yoga Effect, the Mariposa girls are deepening their yoga practice and learning more about the scientifically proven benefits of meditation and breathwork. We also welcomed our parents to participate alongside their children during our annual health fair.

THE MARIPOSA CENTER FOR GIRLS IS NOW POWERED BY PLANTS Thursday means Mexican inspired food. Rice, beans, plantain, avocado, fresh salsa and salad are on the menu. Packed with fiber, vitamins and minerals, this tasty meal is a weekly favorite.

With support from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, we have shifted to a whole-food, plant-based nutrition program at The Mariposa Center for Girls.

We know that when girls take ownership of what they eat and their health, it will have a ripple effect throughout the entire community.

As large contributors to household responsibilities, most young girls in the Dominican Republic are at least partially responsible for preparing meals for their families. In an effort to focus on creating healthy habits that last a lifetime and pay homage to the incredible place they call home, our food program is now entirely powered by plants!

At Mariposa, we often prepare and serve up to 3,000 meals per week to our students, staff and volunteers. A plant-forward diet is not only beneficial to our girls’ health, it’s a tribute to their culture and an acknowledgement of the extraordinary life-giving resources that their country has to offer. Our cooking classes focus on learning new and exciting ways to prepare familiar, local produce (and some new ingredients!), incorporating global flavors to expand their palettes and promote lifelong healthy eating habits that they can implement for their families at home.

EDUCATE, EMPOWER, EMPLOY. In Cabarete, and throughout many under-resourced parts of the Dominican Republic, children only attend school for half a day. With overcrowded classrooms, basic infrastructure and limited time, the public education system is only equipped to provide the bare minimum, leaving many children behind in core subjects with no room in the curriculum for personal attention or in-depth exploration. Mariposa academic enrichment programs provide the full day, well rounded education needed for girls to explore their interests and discover their strengths and passions.

Our goal is to work with the institutions in our local community to provide the best education possible for girls. In 2021 we awarded 75 private school scholarships to Mariposa students in sixth grade and above.

WELCOME MARIPOSITAS! This past fall we welcomed 40 new Mariposa girls into our programs. From math, science and reading to swimming, biking, tennis and dance, our youngest participants’ days were filled with incredibly rich and engaging activities. Most importantly they challenged themselves, gained confidence in their abilities, and shared many laughs along the way.

TAKING ACTION ON A GLOBAL SCALE The older Mariposa girls took ownership in celebrating two important days this year - International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Border of Lights, an event that commemorates the victims of the 1937 Haitian massacre and celebrates the legacy of solidarity along the Haitian-Dominican border. As an organization, we are committed to ensuring that history doesn’t repeat itself by nurturing a strong sisterhood between all of our girls, staff and volunteers from different backgrounds. The girls worked together with staff to plan presentations and lead activities, truly embodying what confident, empowered young women can teach their communities.

MARIPOSAS VOLANDO When a Mariposa graduates from high school, she becomes a “volando” or flying butterfly. While no longer in daily programs, we offer full assistance with college applications and tuition or job and apprenticeship placements.

This year, 17 Mariposas took flight out into the world. In an intimate ceremony, we celebrated the accomplishments of our 2020-21 graduates. Collectively, they have clocked in more than 130 years of programs with The Mariposa DR Foundation including academic support, sports, visual and performing arts, activism, community service, health and environmental education and more.

We could not be prouder of the personal transformations, growth, and empowerment that they have experienced during their time with us.

WHERE ARE OUR GRADUATES NOW?

THREE MARIPOSA GIRLS ON TRACK TO GRADUATE COLLEGE IN THE UNITED STATES! After attending United World College programs, three of our Mariposa girls received Davis Scholarship Funds to attend colleges in the US. With special thanks to supportive host families, donors and volunteers, these young women have a wonderful network of support as thriving college upperclassmen. Yaritza is studying Business at College of Idaho, Romely is a psychology major at Wartburg College in Iowa, and Jafreisy has found her niche at Methodist University in North Carolina. These girls are living proof that if you invest in a girl, she will do the rest.

MARIPOSA GRADUATES MAKING A DIFFERENCE RIGHT HERE IN CABARETE NIKAURIS

Nikauris hails from one of the original families to settle in Cabarete. She’s the first person in her large family to have graduated from high school. Nikauris completed an internship at our sister organization, 3 Mariposas Montessori, where she served as an assistant librarian and solidified her passion for working in education. As a recent recipient of our Mariposa Volando scholarship, she has now completed her training to become a Montessori teacher and has come back to Mariposa to work in our literacy program while she continues her studies in psychology at the local university. Nikauris spent 8 years in Mariposa programs and knows that education is the key to ending the cycle of generational poverty in her family and she’s blazing a new trail for herself. We are beyond impressed with her determination and focus and in awe of what she’s accomplished.

María Angelica began working at the checkout line at Janet’s Supermarket and in just a few short years, she has worked her way up, earning herself a promotion to a full-time administrative management position. María Angelica is a prime example of the Mariposa tagline educate, empower, employ - as she graduated from our programs with a career oriented mindset and continues to actively pursue her professional goals. We’re super proud of this Girl Boss!

SUMMER MEANS IT’S TIME FOR KIDS TO GET UP, GET OUT AND EXPLORE. For girls living in poverty, long stretches of out-of-school time often means increased household responsibilities, isolation and risk of being married at a young age. A community of support and access to recreational and educational activities to help girls learn, grow and thrive during the summer are critical and camp is one of the most important programs that we have.

After two long years of not being able to gather, 2021 was the year of the endless summer!

Our full day summer camp was back in full effect, packed to the brim with engaging activities. From cycling, swimming, surfing, kitesurfing and stand up paddle boarding to theater, visual arts and dance, to river ecology, gardening and cooking, the Mariposa girls were doing it all.

Summer is a special time at The Mariposa Center for Girls. It’s a time where the girls get to spend all day together, laughing, learning, playing, sharing meals and simply tuning out from the stresses of the world to enjoy being in a safe, supportive space. Our staff and volunteers also get to spend extended time with the girls, understanding more about their hopes and dreams for their future and the unique challenges each one of them are facing. It’s an important time for us to take stock of where we are as an organization and make adjustments based on their greatest needs. Although every summer eventually has to come to an end, we’re already planning for bigger and better next year!

AT FINCA ALTA GRACIA

2021 was a landmark year for The Mariposa DR Foundation as we officially opened our second campus high in the mountains of Jarabacoa. In partnership with renowned Dominican-American author and Mariposa Honorary Chairwoman, Julia Alvarez, The Mariposa Mountain School at Finca Alta Gracia officially opened its doors to the girls in the Los Marranitos community.

Spanning nearly 230 acres, Finca (farm) Alta Gracia is a magical place high (alta) in the mountains of Jarabacoa, a place of gratitude and grace (gracia). It is where Julia Alvarez has gone to write some of her most wellknown novels, offering an incredible opportunity to teach about her impact and celebrate her legacy for generations to come.

Through generous donations from the Acronis Foundation and RNT Rausch, we were able to create The Mariposa Mountain School. In addition to academic support, programming for the children at The Mariposa Mountain School will also feature special opportunities to work with local and visiting teachers and artists as the arts continue to be a thread that runs throughout the work of the Foundation.

A NATURAL EXTENSION OF MARIPOSA’S WORK IN CABARETE Transforming Finca Alta Gracia into a community engaged learning and ecotourism hub for Mariposa is a natural extension of the work that we do in Cabarete. Our future plans include creating a women’s agricultural co-op where community members will have the opportunity to teach ecotourists and educational groups about organic polyculture practices that are alive and well in the Dominican Republic as well as the incredible tropical and mountain ecology that is unique to the country.

The farm also helps support our self-sustaining initiatives in providing organic produce for Cabarete Coffee Company and the food program at The Mariposa Center for Girls.

Quality education, environmental stewardship, sustainable practices, community engagement and creative expression are critical elements of the work we do at Mariposa to empower girls. We are thrilled to have this new asset as an addition to our portfolio to further our reach in fulfilling Mariposa’s mission.

BRINGING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER THROUGH ART One of our first projects was collaborating with the local community of Los Marranitos to create a mural that serves as the performing arts backdrop for the new Mariposa Mountain School. Together we designed and created a colorful painting to beautify the space. It was an important exercise for our new program participants in taking ownership of their space and empowering the community to invest in their most valuable assets - girls.

OUR SOCIAL ENTERPRISES

MARIPOSA PRIMEROS LECTORES SERIES Reading comprehension improves drastically when students are able to experience and engage with culturally relevant books.

The Mariposa Primeros Lectores Series is an innovative, Dominican-centered approach specifically designed for new readers. The books contain content that represents their own personally meaningful backgrounds promotes learning and achievement by centering their knowledge and everyday experiences in the classroom. After many years of searching for books where Dominican and Haitian children could see their language and culture represented, the Mariposa team got to work and created our own!

The Mariposa Primeros Lectores series was written and designed by our team and illustrated by Mariposa program graduate, Detiny Mejia. Using familiar words and images makes them fun and easy to engage with as students see and read about the things they see in their daily lives.

The first edition of the book series includes 10 titles and a matching memory card set. They will be distributed to local schools in our community and across the region in early 2022.

OUR SOCIAL ENTERPRISES After two years, we were thrilled to reopen Cabarete Coffee Company in December 2021. Social ventures are an important part of the work we do at Mariposa. In addition to providing direct service to girls and their families, these income generating initiatives help make the organization more sustainable. Cabarete Coffee Company is a small coffee shop that serves as a training ground for our graduates interested in hospitality careers and an important gathering place for visitors to come in and learn more about the work that we do.

Our guests sip on organic coffee, enjoy good, locally grown food and learn about the importance of educating, employing and empowering girls. Cabarete Coffee is also where we are able to sell our handmade Upcycled products, t-shirts, books and other merchandise to help further our mission.

All of our clients can eat happily knowing that 100% of the profits of Cabarete Coffee go back directly into Mariposa programming. We hope that you will come visit us in Cabarete!

CABARETE: Responsible Tourism and Investment Guide is an annual publication put together by the Mariposa staff. The magazine is our largest local fundraiser in the Dominican Republic. Mariposa invites businesses to purchase advertising space and 100% of the sales go directly to support educational programs for girls. Distributed throughout hotels, restaurants and shops throughout Cabarete, the magazine is great exposure for local businesses that support our mission and a fantastic way for visitors to learn more about what we do.

IN-KIND

In-kind donations are charitable gifts of much needed goods and services. When a nonprofit organization receives an inkind contribution, the charity records the gift as revenue. To determine the amount of revenue, the charity must value the in-kind contribution at its fair market value on the date of the donation. Mariposa received many in-kind donations this year including academic/office supplies, tuition scholarship funds, shipping services, food and clothing.
