2024

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

DEAR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS,

2024 was one of our most dynamic and uplifting years as an organization yet. Mariposa girls and staff traveled far and wide — learning, leading, connecting, and studying in new places. From Panama to Thailand, Singapore to Tanzania, and from Walla Walla, Washington to Middlebury, Vermont and New York — and of course, all across the Dominican Republic — our girls made their voices heard. Whether participating in leadership exchanges, academic programs, or cultural immersion, they are truly unstoppable — and the world is taking notice.

We welcomed over 1,000 visitors to the Mariposa Center — including students, educators, advocates, artists, and allies from around the world. We were honored to host Princess Mabel van Oranje and her extraordinary team from Girls First Fund and VOW for Girls, along with Lin-Manuel Miranda and Vanessa Nadal, and their family — all of whom spent meaningful time connecting with our girls and witnessing our work in action.

We now provide over 100 scholarships to girls from our Mountain Campus to the Mariposa Center for Girls. 21 Mariposa girls are currently enrolled in university, and many are already employed, interning, or on leadership paths that reflect their brilliance and resilience.

A major highlight since opening our Obuntu Teaching Kitchen has been the transformation of how we deliver experiential learning. In this vibrant space, our girls explore math, science, nutrition, and culture through hands-on culinary education. This excitement culminated in our second annual Mariposa Olympics with our partners at Lawrence Academy — a cele-

bration of global community, joyful movement, and shared learning.

We also deepened our Navigating Her Future program — a multi-year journey in career awareness, life skills, and personal discovery. Girls explored hands-on workshops, met role models across industries, and visited real workplaces to understand the possibilities that exist beyond their current surroundings. They are not just imagining the future — they are actively preparing for it.

Our social enterprises continued to thrive.

The Cabarete Responsible Tourism and Investment Guide has now reached over 100,000 people, promoting ethical, community-centered travel. Meanwhile, Cabarete Coffee Company remains the first in the region to offer organic coffee, and chocolate grown right here in the Dominican Republic.

In the mountains, everything is blooming — our coffee plants, gardens, and native trees are thriving. In 2024, we composted over 60,000 pounds of food waste, diverting it from landfills and returning it to the soil that feeds us.

In a tremendous milestone, our land offer was officially accepted in 2024. This launches us into our most ambitious chapter yet: a 2025–2028 capital campaign to build the largest and most comprehensive space for girls’ empowerment in Latin America and the Caribbean.

On behalf of the hundreds of Mariposa girls and the thousands of family and community members whose lives have been transformed by our work, we thank you. Your contributions, your encouragement, and your solidarity make it all possible.

MARIPOSA DR FOUNDATION

HOW DO WE MEASURE SUCCESS?

At Mariposa, we measure success by using 3 key milestones:

1. The highest level of educational attainment of the Mariposa girl versus that of her mother.

2. The age the Mariposa girl first gave birth versus her mother’s age when she first gave birth.

3. The age the Mariposa girl first gained formal paid employment outside of the home versus the age her mother first gained formal paid employment, if ever.

ABOUT US MISSION

We create sustainable solutions to end generational poverty by educating girls to become empowered young women and inspiring the international community to join the global movement.

WELCOME TO THE BOARD!

The Executive and Advisory Boards provide crucial support, guidance, and contributions to The Mariposa DR Foundation. In 2024, we were incredibly fortunate and excited to welcome Bernadette Rodriguez to the Executive Board and Dr. Eva Cruz to the Advisory Board.

BERNADETTE RODRIGUEZ

Bernadette Rodriguez currently serves as the Director of Strategy and Product Innovation within the Social Health Practice Division of the Office of Community Health at Kaiser Permanente. She brings more than 20 years of experience, specializing in strategy planning and execution, developing innovative solutions for complex problems within the healthcare industry. She has also worked with other renowned organizations such as The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, Medtronic, Inc,. and Allergan, Inc.

DR. EVA CRUZ

Dr. Eva Cruz was born and raised in Santiago, Dominican Republic and was the first woman to graduate with a B.S. in Electronics Engineering from the Pontifica Unviersidad Católica Madre y Maestra. Dr. Cruz has been an avid Mariposa supporter for several years. In 2022, Dr. Cruz formed a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, the Cruz Morel Foundation, to help fund programs in the Dominican Republic focused on education, primarily for youth from low-income communities. Since then, her organization has sponsored coding classes for our young Mariposa girls.

We are thrilled to welcome both Bernadette and Eva to the Mariposa Team. We look forward to many years of supporting girls to break glass ceilings all around the world.

LASTING IMPACTS OF

COVID-19

To many of us, the COVID-19 pandemic feels like it’s in the distant past. Unfortunately, here in the Dominican Republic, children living in poverty are still suffering the consequences.

Children in the Dominican Republic were already at a disadvantage before the pandemic. In fact, in 2012, “the Dominican Republic ranked 143rd in terms of quality of primary education and 137th out of 144 countries in terms of quality of education system overall” (World Economic Forum).

On September 21, 2022, after the devastation of hurricane Fiona, public schools across the Dominican Republic fully reopened for all children after closing for 2 years due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. In unprecedented circumstances–with limited access to electricity, cellphones, and televi-

sion–online school was ineffective. Days following Hurricane Fiona, many children filled classrooms searching for answers without the educational tools to make it possible.

The aftermath of the pandemic has increased the urgency of the situation for girls worldwide. Children who are currently in Middle School started their education in the 1st and 2nd Grades, but were never able to complete the remainder of their elementary schooling. Middle School girls are also at the highest risk of early marriage, pregnancy, and dropping out of school.

As the world still recovers from COVID-19, The Mariposa DR Foundation is reaffirmed in our mission and we know that, For little girls in the Dominican Republic, the clock is literally ticking at an exponential rate.

THE LAST FULL SCHOOL YEAR FOR A GIRL GRADUATING IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC IN 2024

GIRLS WHO STARTED KINDERGARTEN IN 2019 DIDN’T HAVE A FULL SCHOOL YEAR UNTIL 4TH GRADE.

CLIMATE & COMMUNITY

Through 2024, Climate and Community inspired Mariposa programs, encouraging our entire team to think creatively and critically about new approaches to girls’ education and empowerment. After years of work at the grassroots level, our team understands that it is impractical to expect students to learn during the heat waves of September or that girls need extra support as they experience extreme vulnerability throughout seasons of floods and heavy rain in November. Instead, our approach is to integrate the environment that surrounds us, from the expansive oceans, coral reefs, and mangroves to mountains and forests, allowing the girls to explore and absorb the very best the island that Hisaniola has to offer.

Cabarete is a unique location, attracting visitors from all around the world and allowing the Mariposa girls to meet people from around the world in a safe space. Thus, developing one of the most innovative and effective Global Studies in the world where the Mariposa girls are introduced to a variety

of languages, foods, music, histories, and so much more.

Since Experiential Learning is at the heart of everything we do, we ate our way through the world during the Global Study Program in our Obuntu Culinary School and had so much fun working with local restaurants to learn about international cuisines. We went to Italy with Bliss, India with Blue Moon, Mexico with Gorditos, learned to use chopsticks, made pancakes with real maple syrup, celebrated Mardi Gras with bananas foster and visited Herdman’s Chocolate Factory in Puerto Plata.

The semester of Global Studies was incredibly successful with the highest attendance and engagement rates of Mariposa girls we have had in history. The Mariposa team is encouraged that this innovative approach to girls’ education and empowerment can be extended into our semesters of Environmental Learning, Health & Wellness, Arts and Culture, and Summer Camp!

HIGHLIGHTS & VISITS

As Mariposa’s success continues to grow at an exponential rate, we are proud to welcome important visitors and girl advocates from all over the world to the Mariposa Center for girls. From Princess Mabel van Oranje of the Netherlands, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Vanessa Nadal to Lawrence Academy, Whitby School and various Girl Scouts Troops, Mariposa’s mission and vision are being enacted on a global scale.

Throughout January and February, one of our incredible honorary chairwomen and world renowned author, Julia Alvarez, and her husband, Bill Eichner, spent several days visiting the Mariposa Center for Girls in Cabarete. The two spent time reading with girls, gave many hugs, and reignited our inspiration to continue the historical work of the Mirabal Sisters.

In March, we were honored to welcome Princess Mabel Van Oranje (Founder of Girls Not Brides, VOW for Girls and Girls First Fund), Fanta Toure (Director of Girls First Fund), Clay Dunn (CEO of Vow for Girls), Andie Bobb (Senior Vice President of Vow for Girls), and many other important leaders in the global Girl Movement. We are proud to report that Mariposa was handpicked as a special partner amongst other organizations

around the world as a leader in the girl movement.

During 2024 Mariposa Summer Camp, Mariposa staff and girls were absolutely thrilled for a surprise visit by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Vanessa Nadal, and family. These wonderful guests spent time singing original songs by Lin-Manuel and even enjoyed a signature plant-based Mariposa meal with the girls. We are hon ored to renew our long-standing partnership with the Miranda Family Fund and excited to con tinue this partnership with these global changemakers.

In addition to these incredible international leaders, Mariposa hosted more than 200 students and educators from around the world for Community Engaged Learning (CEL) trips! These visitors brought excitement and a new energy to the Mariposa and volunteered by painting murals, leading classes, coaching sports teams, and repairing the Center. We want to

extend a special thank you to: Lawrence Academy for making the annual Mariposa Olympics a huge success; the Girls Scouts of America for partnering with us and creating special programs for the Mariposa girls; Whitby School for another fun-filled Hungry Caterpillar Orientation week with the youngest Mariposa girls; and Education First for years of collaboration and support.

We are encouraged that all of these visitors, guests, and outspoken supporters

Cabarete is renowned as the kite-surfing capital of the Caribbean, yet the beaches and waters for kiting

lessons. Once they earn their certification, they are permitted to advance to the next level and head out

into the ocean for snorkeling! After the Mariposa girls feel comfortable navigating tides and swimming with marine life, they are ready to learn how to boogie board and surf. Those who wish to continue enter into surf competitions, pursue kitesurfing, and even become some of the only female instructors on Cabarete’s beach. Mariposa girls can now be found crushing the surf in Cabarete’s Encuentro Beach, becoming the only local female instructors, pursuing careers in marine biology all over the world, and so much more!

Participating in sports can be a critical part of development for growing girls. Outside of Mariposa, very few opportunities to safely learn and play sports, especially

watersports, exist for girls. The Mariposa girls gain a lifetime of empowerment when they break barriers by jumping in the pool or dominating the water in surf competitions.

Whether or not they choose to pursue careers or passions in marine activities, the Mariposa girls are breaking the glass ceiling and representing the range of possibilities for girls and young women everywhere.

Thanks to our amazing staff and interns, this summer, Mariposa provided a record number of hours of high quality programs to more girls than ever. Over the course of 8 weeks, we offered:

• OVER 2,000 HOURS OF WATERSPORTS

• 800 HOURS OF SWIMMING LESSONS

• 525 HOURS OF BOOGIE BOARD PROGRAMS

• 525 HOURS OF SURF PROGRAMS

• 400 HOURS OF ARTS AND LITERACY COURSES

• 32,000 WHOLE-FOOD PLANT-BASED MEALS

LATINA

In recent years, many strides have been made to improve women’s access to economic independence, however, our current society still restricts the ability of young girls to imagine themselves in high achieving careers. Recent partnership with Prospera Latina has enabled us to provide a wide range of professional opportunities and experiences to the Mariposa girls through our signature, Navigating Her Future Program.

Through the Navigating Her Future Program, Mariposa girls are exposed to a variety of professions, enabling them to envision their future selves in entirely new ways. While Mariposa gives young women the resources to excel academically, the Navigating Her Future Program inspires our students to see themselves becoming university students, doctors, teachers, lawyers, and so much more. Through this program, our students have the opportunity to visit local businesses, universities across the country, and meet successful women in diverse roles; thus, expanding what Mariposa girls believe they can achieve with their own education.

In 2024, the Mariposa girls embarked on more than 30 educational excursions with full transportation, staff support, and meals provided. During each trip, Mariposa girls spoke with professionals across industries and began to form an understanding of the work they do and the different environments in which they thrive. A few of the girls’ favorite excursions included visits to prestigious universities in Santiago and Jarabacoa, local resorts and hospitality venues of Puerto Plata, and to museums in Santo Domingo. Mariposa students have gained invaluable exposure to the professional world and are grasping the idea that they can do anything they set their mind to.

Thanks to our partnership with Latina Prospera, the sky is not the limit for these bright and ambitious Mariposa girls; they can and will achieve more than they ever dreamt possible.

PARTNERSHIP HIGHLIGHTS

CARIÑO PEDIATRICS

At Mariposa, we understand that it is unrealistic and unfair to ask a young girl to effectively learn in the classroom while struggling with health challenges. We believe that healthy girls are better equipped to learn and grow inside and out of the classroom.

Cariño Pediatrics, founded by French-Moroccan Doctor Michel Cohen, has quickly become a local household name in Cabarete. Since opening in January 2024, the clinic has been led by a team of specialists and offers medical services for children in our Cabarete community. Cariño Pediatrics is incredibly unique as patients are able to pay for their medical care based on their financial ability.

This past year, Cariño Pediatrics provided pro-bono

wellness visits and medical care to all Mariposa girls and staff. Cariño’s lead on the ground doctor, Elodie-Aubry, provides medical care to more than 200 Mariposa girls and their families from the barrios of Cabarete. All of these girls have completed annual check-ups at Cariño and will continue to have access to high quality medical care throughout their adolescence.

MONTHLY DONORS

We are incredibly grateful for all of our donors and supporters around the world. 2024 was a year of tremendous growth, with our community remaining committed to our mission. This year, we want to highlight some of our dedicated monthly donors as well as some inspirational young philanthropists that are making a huge difference.

For over a decade, generous donors have made contributions on a monthly basis which are absolutely essential to ensure the continued quality of our programs. In 2024, Diemut Nadal made her 100th donation to the Mariposa DR Foundation: a clear celebration of her dedication to our work and to making an impact in the lives of hundreds of Mariposa girls. Others, such as Richard and Helen Walsh, recently joined the monthly donor team in 2024 with their contributions already totaling more than $1,000! We also want to be sure to extend a special thank you to our monthly donors who have made contributions for several years: Anna Westbrook, Arlenin Dushku, Benjamin Draper, Brooke Ceko, Chris Dalhuisen, Christelle Grob, Elizabeth Thorndike, Harold Lucie, Karen Silverman, Makaila Lyons, Marley Beach, Marcos Duran, and Sydney Lawson.

Young advocates, such as Tori Dunn, Lauren Oh, and Caroline Beloff, give us immense hope that the next generations of philanthropists are passionate about the Girl Movement and are actively seeking to make a difference in the world. For years, Tori Dunn has dedicated significant contributions that support our Mariposa Volando program, ensuring that all Mariposa graduates have scholarships to attend university in pursuit of their greatest dreams. Lauren Oh and Caroline Beloff both found Mariposa through high school trips to the Dominican Republic and their commitment to our mission has never wavered. All three of these incredible young women have used their platforms to instill real change in the world by encouraging their family foundations to make Mariposa a priority in annual contributions.

Thank you to each and every Mariposa donor and supporter around the world. Our work would not be possible without your invaluable support. Together, we are creating brighter futures for girls who, although born into poverty, are destined for success as the leaders of tomorrow.

LAND EXPANSION

After several years of wishing and waiting, our dreams are becoming a reality - we are expanding and doubling the size of our campus! In late 2024, The Mariposa DR Foundation’s offer on the land next door to the Mariposa Center for Girls was accepted. Within the next year, the Mariposa Center for Girls will more than double in size from 5,000 square meters to 10,500 square meters. Right on the main road, in a rapidly growing town, our project will be at the forefront of all of the exciting developments in Cabarete.

This expansion will allow us to scale our work like never before. Not only will we solidify the Mariposa Center as the largest safe space for girls in all of Latin America and the Caribbean, but we will become the central hub for the Girl Movement across the region. Over the next few years, we will design and construct the world’s first Museum of the Girl and a state-of-the-art Visitor Center! The project and new center will attract world leaders, girl advocates, and groups and will help to amplify Mariposa’s Model around the globe.

SOCIAL BUSINESSES

Mariposa’s innovation does not stop with daily educational programs for girls. Mariposa plans to be 80% self-sustaining by 2030 and has an array of projects and businesses that are income generating. Highlighted below are 3 that have proven the most sustainable and successful.

CABARETE COFFEE COMPANY

Cabarete Coffee Company is a small cafe and locally owned and operated by the Mariposa DR Foundation. 100% of Cabarete Coffee Company proceeds go directly to support Mariposa programs. Formal and professional employment at the coffee shop can be a stepping stone for graduates and families to gain job experience, boost their resumes, and prepare them for a professional job setting.

At Mariposa and Cabarete Coffee, we strive to provide coffee & food that is good to taste, good for the earth, and good for the people who grow it. We are proud to serve fresh food directly from our farm in La Finca Alta Gracia to the Mariposa girls and to guests at Cabarete Coffee Company.

2025 CABARETE: RESPONSIBLE TOURISM & INVESTMENT GUIDE

Cabarete: Responsible Tourism & Investment Guide is an annual magazine produced by The Mariposa DR Foundation as a yearly fundraiser. 100% of proceeds from advertising sales go directly to support programs that educate and empower girls at the Mariposa Center for Girls right here in Cabarete.

This unique publication is filled with interesting stories, travel tips, opinions, reviews, fun insider information and high quality photography. The magazine is geared towards tourists, families, people who may be looking to purchase homes, real estate investors, and those just looking for something fun to do; people who are looking for information, adventure, safety and fun!

LA FINCA ALTA GRACIA

La Finca Alta Gracia is a 200 acre coffee farm donated by Julia Alvarez, and her husband, Bill Eicher to the Mariposa DR Foundation. La Finca not only provides important nourishment to the Mariposa girls and community, but also plays a vital role in protecting land in the mountains and natural environments of the Dominican Republic.

This year, La Finca Alta Gracia produced thousands of bananas, limes, macadamia, and coffee, and served as an educational classroom for hundreds of Dominican and Haitian girls.
