The library is often seen as a secluded space cut off from the urban fabric and activities. Its presence is invisible to the public as the public and the library is disconnected. Aggravated by the era of digitalization, the raison d’etre of the library is being questioned. Why would we need it anymore? The new City of Melbourne library will complement the Chinatown site. As Chinatown is sparkling with life and activities, the area lacks the presence of a public open space. The library will then cater to that by being an extension of the laneway and acts as a public square in the area, encouraging people to use its spaces. Continous and free circulation will bring the public upwards through dramatic open wide spaces as the library ’s floor plates will continues upwards in a vertical piazza. This is all being catered to with relation of the historical significance of the site, in which the library was inspired by the gold ores, paying back its history as a major trading area during the gold rush. The site is located in Chinatown, a historical area with a rich history. It is really dense and hectic, as the streets were flooded with people during rush hours. With this amount of people, there is also barely any open space through the area. There is a lack of sunlight penetration throughout the day as the site was surrounded by tall buildings. The laneway at Corrs Lane is bluestone material, creating a more pedestrian friendly atmosphere, and is one of the main driver in this concept.
