Welcome to our 20th Anniversary Season Welcome to the 20th Anniversary Season of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that the orchestra we started all those years ago would today be regarded as one of the leading ensembles in the UK. My colleagues and I have worked hard to create an orchestra of the highest quality that has attracted the attention of some of the world’s greatest artists, many of whom now work with us on a regular basis.

There are many highlights in our 20th season, none more exciting than our anniversary concert on 12 January featuring Anne-Sophie Mutter, Martha Argerich and Maxim Vengerov, all artists with whom we have a close relationship. This special celebration takes place at the Barbican, the venue where the Oxford Philharmonic’s very first concert took place on 8 November 1998.

As we do each season, I’m delighted to showcase the extraordinary talent within our own ranks, with a number of concerto performances and chamber concerts from our remarkable principal players.

Last year, we celebrated 15 years as Orchestra in Residence at the University of Oxford. This was another landmark in the life of the Oxford Philharmonic.

In addition to a schedule of around 40-50 performances a year in Oxford and beyond, the Oxford Philharmonic is deeply engaged in education at primary, secondary and tertiary level under the banner of our Academy Programme. Our award-winning programme in local hospitals also provides much-needed comfort to those with serious ailments.

As we enter our 20th year, what preoccupies my mind most is what lies ahead for the next 20 years and beyond. As Founder of this revered institution, it would give me enormous pleasure to know that the legacy of the Oxford Philharmonic is safely in the hands of those who value its contribution to the community.

Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra Praised as ‘excellent’ by Gramophone magazine and ‘thoroughly impressive’ by BBC Music Magazine, the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra’s reputation is based on the uncompromising artistic standards of its Founder and Music Director, Marios Papadopoulos, and maintained by some of the finest musicians in the UK. Established in 1998 and formerly known as Oxford Philomusica, the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra occupies a unique position within the UK orchestral landscape. As an orchestra of the highest quality, the Oxford Philharmonic attracts some of the world’s greatest artists to appear in its series including Valery Gergiev, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Martha Argerich, András Schiff, Renée Fleming, Lang Lang, Janine Jansen, Yuri Temirkanov and Vladimir Ashkenazy.

Following his remarkable debut with the Orchestra in 2013, Maxim Vengerov became its first Artist in Residence. Over an unprecedented four-season collaboration, Vengerov and the Oxford Philharmonic performed across the UK and recorded the violin concertos of Brahms and Sibelius. With a commercial release pending, both recordings have received exclusive plays on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM and WQXR. Recent collaborations with Vengerov include a recording of Mendelssohn’s Octet and appearances at Cheltenham Music Festival and Saffron Hall with the Soloists of the Oxford Philharmonic - a tight-knit group of musicians described by The Times as the ensemble’s ‘glorious individual players’ and by Jessica Duchen as 'a line-up to match any top-notch international chamber ensemble and probably beat them on their own turf'.

The Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra’s many achievements to date include an annual concert season in Oxford, touring performances across the UK and a

growing list of international engagements; family concerts; the annual Oxford Piano Festival and the Orchestra’s Chamber Music Series. Recent releases include works by Nimrod Borenstein for Chandos, and cello concertos by Shostakovich and Mats Lidström (Solo Cello of the Oxford Philharmonic) on the BIS label, both conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy. Other acclaimed recordings include Haydn’s The Creation with the Choir of New College and the Handel/ Mendelssohn Acis and Galatea with Christ Church Cathedral Choir.

The Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra has been firmly committed to outreach work from its earliest days. Its various projects focus on taking music to areas of social and economic disadvantage, including work in special schools and hospitals. In 2002, the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra was appointed the first ever Orchestra in Residence at the University of Oxford. The Oxford Philharmonic collaborates with the Faculty of Music in educational programmes.

Partnerships with Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council provide tuition and performance opportunities for hundreds of talented young musicians.

A recent partnership with J & A Beare provides our distinguished members with opportunities to play on Stradivari instruments, adding a new dimension to the sound of the Orchestra.

The Orchestra and its Music Director were awarded the City of Oxford’s Certificate of Honour in 2013, in recognition of their contribution to education and performance in Oxford.

The continual search for excellence underpins the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra’s reputation, and is reflected in an orchestra that strives to create bold musical statements with every concert it presents.

Music Director Marios Papadopoulos conducts it here in this celebratory season opening brimming with ‘firsts’. Narek Hakhnazaryan makes his Oxford Philharmonic debut in Dvořák’s magical cello concerto. Richard English’s Into The Void gets its first concert performance after being selected in last season’s Composers’ Workshop, conducted here by Rhodes Scholar Hannah Schneider, who conducts the Orchestra for the first time.

This time, the Russian violinist brings us not Shostakovich but Prokofiev, and a concerto in which wondrous fantasy and nervous energy meet to enchanting effect. After Prokofiev’s concerto and a deliciously impulsive slice of Saint-Saëns, Marios Papadopoulos takes us back to Shostakovich and life in midcentury Soviet Russia. Beneath the clashing waltzes and cartoon chases of the composer’s ninth symphony of 1945 is the underlying message that life under the regime was anything but fun.

Owen Rees conducts his own Choir of The Queen’s College in a performance of Johannes Brahms’s requiem, in which radiance and dignity take precedence over judgement and condemnation. Before Brahms’s consoling masterpiece, we hear a piece by George Butterworth, a graduate of Trinity College killed at the Somme, and Vaughan Williams’s An Oxford Elegy, first performed at The Queen’s College and narrated here by Queen’s alumnus Rowan Atkinson.

Mahler glanced elsewhere in the slimmed-down pastoral of his fourth symphony and produced some of his most heart-easing music: clouds gather, only to be gently breathed away by the soprano’s heavenly song. After the insistent, compelling anger of Beethoven’s early symphonies, his violin concerto appears to brim over with a joy just as forthright and spontaneous.

‘I did think I did see all Heaven before me’ wrote Handel as he finished Messiah. It’s not hard to hear why. Inside its biblical stories and reflections on redemption and love, Messiah contains some of the most moving music ever composed – as touching as it is universal. For this seasonal performance in the atmospheric surroundings of the Sheldonian Theatre, Marios Papadopoulos and the Orchestra are joined by first-rate vocal soloists and the virile, gleaming voices of the Schola Cantorum of Oxford. Among many alternatives, this is one Christmas concert not to miss.

Maxim Vengerov and Anne-Sophie Mutter both return to the Orchestra for an unprecedented collaboration in Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins, a work both animated and divine. Another returning friend, Martha Argerich, takes on Schumann’s loveletter in music, his piano concerto. The only way to follow this special concert’s all-star first half is with the symphony that changed the direction of music forever, Beethoven’s 'Eroica'.

She returns to the Orchestra for a work that eavesdrops on one of the most passionate romances of the nineteenth century: Schumann’s piano concerto. After Bach’s bustling Concerto for Two Violins played by the Orchestra’s very own concertmasters, Marios Papadopoulos marshals the entire ensemble in a symphony that would encapsulate ideals of liberty in music of intense endurance and fortitude and change music’s rules in the process: Beethoven’s 'Eroica'.

STRAvINSkY Octet for Wind Instruments Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments Symphonies of Wind Instruments Symphony of Psalms Christ Church Cathedral Choir Steven Grahl chorus master Marios Papadopoulos piano/conductor The Choir of Christ Church Cathedral joins the Orchestra for an evening given over to Stravinsky at his most meticulous and exalted. The composer’s fascination with the particular sonority of wind instruments delivered some of his most sophisticated works, including the pithy Symphonies of Wind Instruments and perky Octet. After the ingenious Concerto for Piano and Winds, in a rare performance directed from the piano by Marios Papadopoulos, we hear Stravinsky at his most spiritual, and the Symphony of Psalms that pivots on what the composer described as ‘a song to be danced’, Psalm 150.

In between the symphony that set Mozart on a joyous and liberating new course and his final utterance in symphonic form, soloists Vilde Frang and Lawrence Power bring us a piece in which we catch a glimpse of the composer’s soul – the 'double concerto' for violin and viola that feels presciently lined with tragedy.

On 4 March 1791, Mozart gave his last public performance. Nine months and one day later, he was dead. Those present at that performance might have sensed a farewell from the piano concerto Mozart played – his last, numbered 27.

Gone was the overt drama of the composer’s earlier concerto in D minor, No. 20. Gone were the orchestra’s trumpets and drums. In their place was a work of deep resignation and subdued gravity. Directing from the keyboard, Marios Papadopoulos and the Orchestra present a rare opportunity to hear Mozart’s most moving piano concerto alongside one of his most thrilling.

As the former composer felt his world falling apart, he railed against his impending destiny with inspiring optimism in the fifth symphony. Korngold, exiled in Hollywood from Nazi-occupied Vienna, longed to write for the concert stage and plundered his best movie scores for the most haunting, expressive and beautiful themes to make his violin concerto. Ben Gernon makes his debut with the Orchestra in this concert of hearton-sleeve masterpieces featuring our own concertmaster Carmine Lauri as the soloist.

ELGAR Introduction and Allegro, Op. 47 TIPPETT Concerto for Double String Orchestra ELGAR Violin Concerto in B minor, Op. 61 Nicola Benedetti violin Marios Papadopoulos conductor We may never know whose soul is ‘enshrined’ in Elgar’s violin concerto according to the work’s mysterious dedication, but the music suggests it must have been someone the composer loved dearly. Nicola Benedetti returns to the Orchestra for this performance of the first truly successful violin concerto from England, a piece of which Elgar himself confessed ‘It is too emotional, but I love it.’ Marios Papadopoulos and the Orchestra contextualise Elgar’s masterpiece with his elegy-tinged Introduction and Allegro and the captivating rhythmic brilliance of his successor Michael Tippett’s own Concerto for Double String Orchestra.

Her third symphony of 1847 is a masterpiece of symphonic design and emotional power, a work of feverish wildness, songful intensity and filigree beauty. Before it, we hear from Beethoven himself, courtesy of a giant among pianists Yefim Bronfman. He returns to the Orchestra following his debut in 2017 for the concerto by Beethoven that sees the composer at his most composed.

Ravel) Professor Martin Kemp presenter Marios Papadopoulos conductor 500 years after the death of Leonardo da Vinci, a leading authority on the Italian polymath leads a celebration of his legacy and vision. Professor Martin Kemp, the University of Oxford’s Emeritus Professor of Art History, presents this concert at the Oxford Town Hall which includes the most adored series of musical paintings in history: Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Marios Papadopoulos and the Orchestra begin with the Three Botticelli Pictures by master of orchestral colour Ottorino Respighi and a specially commissioned new work from one of the University’s tutors in Composition, Manuel Martínez Burgos.

Krzysztof PENDERECKI Adagio for String Orchestra from Symphony No. 3 Viola Concerto Serenade for String Orchestra Concertino for Trumpet and Orchestra Yuri Zhislin viola Gábor Boldoczki trumpet Krzysztof Penderecki conductor Krzysztof Penderecki’s musical and personal journey has produced some of the most remarkable music of the last 70 years. Across strikingly different musical styles, he seeks ‘to collect and transform the experience of the entire century’ and often succeeds. Under Penderecki’s baton, our own concertmaster Yuri Zhislin plays the elegiac viola concerto first performed by his father, Grigori Zhislin, while Gábor Boldoczki brings us the work for trumpet and orchestra written for him by the Polish composer in 2015.

KELLY Elegy for Strings 'In Memoriam Rupert Brooke' SCHUMANN Violin Concerto in D minor BARTÓK Concerto for Orchestra, BB 123 Jessica Duchen presenter Alena Baeva violin Marios Papadopoulos conductor It’s one of the strangest stories in the history of music: could Robert Schumann’s lost violin concerto really have been discovered by means of a séance nearly 100 years after the composer’s death? Novelist and music journalist Jessica Duchen picks up the story as we hear Schumann’s rich and unusual concerto courtesy of Alena Baeva, making her debut with the Orchestra. Before that comes an equally heartfelt elegy by Frederick Septimus Kelly, a Balliol graduate killed in the Great War with his own connection to the Schumann séance. And to finish, one of the great orchestral showpieces of the twentieth century: Bartók’s spicy and spectacular Concerto for Orchestra.

‘One of the very finest of pianists’ (The Guardian) Steven Osborne makes his debut with the Orchestra in a concert that springs with freshness and joie de vivre. Stravinsky sought to capture the ordered instrumental bustle of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos in his own 'Dumbarton Oaks', while Bizet also took classical ideals of good, clean fun to heart while writing his graceful Symphony in C. Preceding the austere beauty of Ravel’s Pavane, Osborne is the soloist in Shostakovich’s most bejeweled creation: the playful, tender Piano Concerto No. 2, a gift from the composer to his son.

Nestling in between them is a rare treat: Georg Philipp Telemann’s take on Cervantes’s Don Quixote, with its depictions of battle, deceit and not one but two galloping horses. Join us for baroque jewels you may know, and some you may not.

Vadim Repin PROKOFIEV Sonata for Two Violins in C major, Op. 56 SHOSTAKOVICH String Quartet No. 8 in C minor, Op. 110 TCHAIKOVSKY Piano Trio in A minor, Op. 50 The Soloists of the Oxford Philharmonic Vadim Repin violin Natalia Lomeiko violin Mats Lidström cello Marios Papadopoulos piano Tchaikovsky had a choppy relationship with the pianist Nikolai Rubinstein and one night dreamed his colleague was dead, vowing to treat him with more kindness thereafter. When Rubinstein did die not long after, Tchaikovsky went to his desk and within a month had finished his only piano trio, ‘dedicated to the memory of a great artist.’ This tender, anguished and beautifully coloured work forms the high point of a Russian-themed chamber music concert for which Marios Papadopoulos and soloists of the Orchestra are joined by the Russian virtuoso Vadim Repin.

Pianist Martin Roscoe joins soloists of the Orchestra for a journey through scintillating Hungarian chamber works of the early twentieth century. Zoltán Kodály wrote his String Quartet No. 2 as the Great War tore through Europe; the work journeys from introspection to discussion to eventual wildness. After the final twist from somberness to radiance of Ernst von Dohnányi’s hearty Piano Quintet No. 2, we finish with Béla Bartók’s masterpiece of symmetry and savagery, his helter-skelter String Quartet No. 5.

Only in his eighth decade did Leos Janáček allow the spirit and enthusiasm of youth to impregnate his works, but when he did the result was life-affirming. That is exemplified

by Mládi, a wind sextet that bubbles forth with generosity and warmth from a grateful composer who waited many years for recognition. Wind soloists of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra present the work here alongside charming works for wind from France offset by the alluring nocturnal darkness of Mozart’s C minor Wind Serenade.

The Oxford Philharmonic Academy Education and outreach sit at the heart of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra. We are ambassadors for music education helping people of all ages and backgrounds to become involved in music, and to nurture and cultivate talent.

The Oxford Philharmonic Academy incorporates all our educational programmes ranging from primary to tertiary level tuition. For the most gifted young people, this includes our Residency Programme at the University of Oxford, the high-level tuition given to pianists during the Oxford Piano Festival, as well as our partnership with the Oxfordshire County Music Service. Our principal players and visiting international artists offer tuition for students at all levels. Our work in the community involves bringing music to disadvantaged communities with high levels of unemployment, crime and social service intervention where there is little or no exposure to music.

The Academy Programme Oxford Piano Festival

The annual Oxford Piano Festival is a mecca for young pianists from all over the world to converge on Oxford to study with renowned artists and professors.

An intensive programme of masterclasses during the day is complemented by a series of evening concerts with the world’s greatest artists in some of the most beautiful venues in Oxford. The Festival’s President and Patron are Sir András Schiff and Alfred Brendel respectively.

Primary and Secondary Education

Family concerts held in conjunction with the Oxford City Council foster a love of music for young children and their families. We work with Special Schools and primary schools in the most socially and economically deprived areas in Oxford and host a day of music-making and learning for children from across Oxfordshire.

Working in partnership with the Oxfordshire County Music Service we provide secondary school-aged students performance, tuition, apprenticeship and performance opportunities. As part of the Oxfordshire Music Education Partnership Music Hub Gala Awards, we were awarded the ‘Musical Partnerships’ Cup in 2017 and the ‘Most Inclusive Music Initiative’ award in 2018 for our collaborative work with schools.

Residency Programme

As the Orchestra in Residence at the University of Oxford, we offer students unique opportunities including tuition from members of the Orchestra, masterclasses from visiting international artists, performance opportunities, apprenticeships in orchestral practice and a platform for young composers.

Hospitals

Over the years we have been very active in local hospitals and have established special relationships with a number of units. Our workshops for physically and mentally handicapped patients of all ages continue to achieve outstanding therapeutic results. Our projects at the Oxfordshire Mental Healthcare NHS Trust were awarded a major grant from Youth Music.
