GIANT BEGINS

Su estética se alimenta del arte pop, de la psicodelia de los años 60, de los carteles rusos y chinos de las campañas comunistas y con aires del cómic estadounidense. ació el 15 de febrero de 1970 en Charleston, Carolina del Sur, se crió en el arte callejero, con banda sonora de Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Dead Kennedys. El combo se completó con los skates que los padres le regalaron a los catorce. A los diecinueve ya sabía que graffitis, skate y punk rock no eran sólo la forma de su vida, quería que también fueran su contenido.

Más de quince veces fue detenido por la policía en su adolescencia por bombing art (bombardeo artístico, graffitis ilegales) en muros públicos o privados. Su situación como artista es controvertida, manteniendo trabajos de diseño gráfico y publicidad con grandes marcas por un lado, y enfrentándose a detenciones en diversos países por vandalismo urbano con sus intervenciones, siendo de esta manera un representante de la discusión sobre el papel del artista y su ideología en el momento presente de la historia de las sociedades capitalistas.

Reivindica el espacio público como espacio principal para la vida artística y cultural, proponiendo una crítica a la hegemonía estética y presencial de la publicidad, encabezada por las grandes corporaciones financieras.

Desde muy joven tuvo claros sus horizontes profesionales y creativos, por ello una vez terminada su etapa de formación inicial en diversas escuelas privadas (Porter Gaud y Wando High School) ingresa en la Academia de Música y Artes Idyllwild en 1985. Más adelante, tan sólo tres años después es admitido en la prestigiosa Escuela de diseño de Rhode Island, (ahí donde

anduvieron David Byrne y Gust Van Sant).

Pero nada es gratis, la Rhode es cara y Shepard consiguió un trabajo para mantenerse mientras estudiaba. ¿Dónde? Claro, no en una mercería ni en la construcción.

Atendía una casa de skates en Providence y por las noches diseñaba camisetas de grupos de rock, calcomanías y todo tipo de artículos de calle para gente de la calle.

Revisaba revistas para un adhesivo y encontró unas fotos de André, The Giant, una estrella de la lucha libre, francés, gigante de 2,24 m., que brilló en Estados Unidos y Japón en la década del 80. Entonces tuvo una idea. Camisetas con la inscripción: “André has a posse” (André tiene una pandilla). Fue un éxito inmediato. Todos querían ser parte de la pandilla de André.

La frase se convirtió en muletilla y con marketing, paciencia y saliva, Shepard consiguió que hasta en los medios de comunicación se popularizara el chiste.

Después vino la serie con la palabra “Obey” (“obedezca”), en carteles desparramados por las ciudades más cool de la costa oeste. La cara de André y la orden en columnas de alumbrado público, en carteles perdidos por la 66, en esos autos enormes en los que el sueño americano gasta el petróleo del mundo. Pero Fairey no quería ser sólo un diseñador con onda, quería ser una mezcla finisecular de guerrillero y filósofo. Guerrilla callejera, con cuestionamientos filosóficos a los simples peatones, para irritarlos y obligarlos a pensar. Tiene ya dieciocho años su “Manifesto”, donde define su trabajo como “experiencias de fenomenología”, inspiradas en Martin Heidegger: “La fenomenología busca antes de

todo el despertar del sentido del cuestionamiento sobre lo que nos rodea. Los pósters Obey intentan estimular la curiosidad y llevar a la gente a cuestionarse al mismo tiempo al cartel y a la relación que tiene con su entorno”, escribió. Y se lo creyó.

Con esas ambiciones, el muchacho de Charleston no se iba a quedar toda la vida vendiéndoles skates a los punkitos de Providence. Sus influencias se ampliaron y todo entró en la paleta del bombing: el constructivismo ruso de Alexander Rodchenko (el rostro levemente elevado de Obama imita también una pose clásica de Rodchenko), el arte revolucionario chino, Andy Warhol, Bansky, cómo no.

En 1995, crea la empresa de asociados llamada Proyectos subliminales. Aunque será en 1996 cuando junto a Dave Kinsey, Philip Wolff y Howell de forma a una gran marca creativa de diseño orientada hacia un amplio espectro de mercados.

Disuelta sin embargo la unión en 1999, a excepción de Howell, los tres socios restantes presentan un nuevo proyecto de diseño comercial, BLK. Una apuesta de gran éxito responsable de la configuración de campañas de marketing para Pepsi y Hasbro, entre otros, o el diseño del conocido logo del navegador Mozilla (dinosaurio rojo obra de Fairey). Dividida con posterioridad atendiendo a una eficiencia profesional entre los dos socios existentes (Fairey y Kinsey).

mente creativo del artista, sus obras presentan una estética similar a la del cartelismo político de mediados del siglo pasado con un transfondo ideológico en ocasiones muy marcado. De un estilo reconocible por su alto grado de originalidad, gracias a la mezcla persistente de tonalidades estrictamente fijadas, sus influencias son variadas: “Hay un montón de gente diferente de la cual el trabajo me gusta que no son necesariamente las influencias estéticas, sino conceptuales. Me inspira John VanHammersfeld que hizo una gran cantidad de carteles gráficos psicodélicos y una de mis primeras obras de gigante son junto a un icónico Hendrix. Mi trabajo es en gran medida una fusión de muchas influencias diferentes.” A la que se suma presumiblemente la de Andy Warhol.

La obra de Fairey ahora está en todas partes. En el New Museum of Contemporary Art, en el Museo de Arte Moderno de San Diego, en el Victoria & Alberto Museum de Londres. Pero también puede estar en tu casa, si es que

tienes el CD Modership de Led Zeppelin, el Very Best de Billy Idol o el Zeitgeist de Smashing Pumpkins. La editorial Penguin acaba de reeditar los libros de George Orwell con tapa de Fairey, quien también diseñó el afiche de la película sobre la vida de Johnny Cash, Walk the Line.

Fairey, todo un empresario, tiene ya su propia agencia de diseño, Studio Number One, la marca de ropa Obey, la revista de cultura pop Swindle y la galería de arte Subliminal Project. Sin embargo, no abandona la calle. Ahí están por ejemplo los graffitis y carteles que hizo para la campaña “Shut down Guantánamo”.

No se le nota muy preocupado cuando le cuestionan haber renegado de sus comienzos subversivos: “Ser parte –dice– del mundo del arte comercial y comprenderlo es, de cierta manera, como una infiltración de mi parte. Porque siempre sentí que gran parte de mi trabajo era una reacción a la propaganda y una forma de comprender cómo funciona.

Arte y comercio se necesitan mutuamente, no es tan clara su división”.

Será por eso que puso en venta por internet el afiche “Obama Hope” por cien dólares, pero por cuatrocientos dólares más te vende uno con su propia firma, la firma del traductor gráfico de la poplítica que Obama vino a instalar.

Caracterizados por el empleo de imágenes sencillas y colores muy impactantes, estos murales se han convertido al mismo tiempo en una forma de protesta ante las injusticias del mundo, y en una crítica a las campañas de publicidad políticas y comerciales. Aunque suelen ser obras de pocas palabras, sí tienen un lema:

Haz el arte y no la guerra.

Lemas como “Piensa y crea, imprime y destruye”, que mezclan lo subversivo con el entretenimiento, su temática y estética viene a ser a menudo una mezcla entre caricatura y revival de la propaganda política, las ideas situacionistas y las revoluciones estético-filosóficas de los 60, trasfondos temáticos muy comunes en el arte de finales de los 90 y principios del presente siglo.

ndré el gigante tiene una pandilla”, transcrito a los muros en forma de serigrafía que le permitó adquirir una alta popularidad en los circuitos urbanos (la plantilla se extendió como la pólvora por carteles, vallas y muros en la mayorías de la ciudades estadounidenses) y presentarse como su sello artístico personal, inclusive es el origen de la conformación de su pseudónimo oficial: Obey Giant. Pese a esto no interrumpe su proceso formativo y obtiene su graduado en ilustración en 1992. Y es a partir de este momento cuando empieza su inmersión en el mundo laboral. Su primer negocio (Gráficos alternativos) centrado en la decoración gráfica produce gran cantidad de diseños para pegatinas, camisetas o carteles disponibles en venta e incluso se dedica a la impresión comercial.

En este sentido, la realizadora Helen Stickler presenta una película documental acerca del protagonismo y la genuina tendencia imparable de Fairey, bajo el título homenaje: André el gigante tiene una pandilla. La repercusión de sus creaciones, a estas alturas de la década de los noventa se ha convertido en un fenómeno creciente digno de ser analizado.

Shepard Fairey fue uno de los primeros artistas de graffiti de finales del siglo XX en propagar la técnica de pegatinas como intervención callejera. Sus primeras pegatinas mostraban una foto en alto contraste de André el Gigante, como mensaje sin contenido y con la principal intención de sorprender al viandante y espectador. Define este trabajo como “un experimento de fenomenología”. Comenzó a repartir de forma gratuita estas pegatinas, convirtiéndose poco a poco en un icono de la cultura popular contemporánea. Ha realizado diferentes versiones del mismo tema, y también las ha incluido en exposiciones, posters, camisetas, diseños para estampados de monopatín, etc.

Otros de sus trabajos callejeros más destacados son los posters de grandes dimensio-

nes, con los que empapela paredes a la vista de los viandantes en diferentes países a los que viaja. En estos posters suele estar presente una temática política velada o una sugerencia de reflexión sobre los estereotipos de discusión política. Su estilo está basado en parte en el cartelismo ruso de la era del comunismo y en el arte pop, con elementos claros del comic estadounidense. Entre los motivos de esta temática estan las efigies de Lenin o del Subcomandante Marcos, aunque Fairey afirma no estar haciendo propaganda, sino buscar una provocación o un contraste.

e conoce bajo el nombre de Obey o Giant la obra callejera más representativa de Shepard Fairey. Como en otros artistas de graffiti, este nombre sirve tanto para el acrónimo de la obra como para el pseudónimo de Fairey durante su ejecución. Consiste en una serie de pegatinas -más tarde posters- con el rostro de André el Gigante(André the GIANT) en diferentes variaciones de alto contraste. El lema/nombre original era GIANT HAS A POSSE “El Gigante tiene una pandilla”), pero más tarde el concepto de Fairey empezó a hacer más presentes aspectos de filosofía social y crítica del sistema, y fue incluyendo la palabra OBEY (= “Obedece”) sumando así mayor impacto y absurdo a la estética del tema.

En palabras de Fairey: “La campaña Obey puede ser explicada como un experimento de Fenomenología. La principal intención de la Fenomenología es redespertar un sentido de fascinación hacia el entorno de uno.

La campaña Obey intenta estimular la curiosidad y atraer a la gente a cuestionar tanto la campaña como sus relaciones con quienes les rodean. Dado que la gente no está acostumbrada a ver anuncios o propaganda cuyos motivos no sean obvios, los encuentros frecuentes y noveles con la propaganda Obey provocan pensamiento y posible frustración, y en cualquier caso revitaliza la percepción y atención del espectador a los detalles.”

Las primeras pegatinas fueron fotocopiadas y colocadas por Fairey de forma local o en sus viajes, pero pronto empezó a repartir copias, imprimirlas con calidad de papel, definición y tintas, y enviarlas por correo a amigos y curiosos, haciendo que sus pegatinas fuesen colocadas en los espacios colectivos de muchos países. Remitiría personalmente copias de pegatinas de la gama OBEY GIANT gratuitamente, a cambio de otros trabajos que otros artistas le enviasen. En la página web oficial de OBEY recibe colaboraciones internacionales de los aficionados y seguidores de este fenómeno-manifestación, bootlegs de las primeras versiones de GIANT, así como enlaces a trabajos y proyectos de otros artistas. Shepard Fairey también cubre el campo del diseño gráfico como empleo regular. Ha realizado diseños para conocidas marcas de refrescos, como Dew, monopatines Real Skateboards, y músicos de renombre como Sepultura, Chuck D de Public Enemy, entre otros.

A few facts about the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation: In 1980 the Supreme Court ruled upon the longest running court case in US History, the United States vs Sioux Nation. The court determined that the treaties with the Sioux had been violated when they were resettled onto P.O.W. camps, and 7 million acres of their land were opened up to prospectors and homesteaders. These camps are now called “reservations”.

The grim statistics on Native Reservations today are the equivalent to that of a 3rd world country, revealing the legacy of colonization and treaty violations. Unemployment on the Reservation fluctuates between 80-90%. Many are homeless, and those with homes are packed into rotting buildings with up to 5 families. More than 90% of the population lives below the federal poverty line. The life expectancy for men is 47 years old – roughly the same as Afghanistan and Somalia.

Aaron’s ever-evolving Pine Ridge project gives voice to social injustice and a forgotten history. It empowers the Lakota and other tribes who fight for recognition of the past in order to help give them a chance to move forward.

os antentados perpetrados en Oslo el 22 de Julio coincidieron con la organizacion por parte de la entidad socio cultural T&J Art Walk con sede en Londres del certamen de street art en beneficio de la organizacion pro derechos humanos Human Rights Watch que se esta todav铆a celebrando en la ciudad. Con motivo de tan brutales hechos sus participantes, algunos de los mas representantivos artistas callejeros Logan Hicks, D*Face, The London Police, Faile, Will Barras, Shepard Fairey, Fenx, Galo y Martin Whatson, quedaron conmocionados.

Shepard Fairey Obey que coincido su llegada a la capital noruega con el atentado, decidi贸 incluir entonces una intervenci贸n que manifestara su rechazo ante cualquier acto de violencia y a su vez fuera un manifiesto por la paz. El resultado es un mural realizado aprovechado la doble cara de un edificio. Los elementos centrales una paloma simbolizando la paz, y en la contigua dos fusiles que en vez de disparar balas, se convierten en floreros de los que salen rosas.

Según el blogger de The New York Times Steven Heller, el afiche fue inspirado por el realismo social y aunque fue ampliamente elogiado como original y único. hepard Fairey, quien había creado previamente arte urbano político, crítico al Gobierno y de George W. Bush, discutió sobre la naciente campaña de Obama con el publicista Yosi Sergant a fines de octubre de 2007. Sergant sugirió que Fairey creara alguna obra artística en apoyo a Obama y lo contactó con la campaña de Obama para buscar su permiso para que Fairey diseñara un afiche de Obama, el cual fue concedido unas pocas semanas antes del Súper martes. Fairey encontró una fotografía de Obama usando Google Imágenes (posteriormente, revelada como una fotografía de abril de 2006 tomada por Mannie Garcia para Associated Press)y creó el diseño del afiche original en un solo día. This poster was created from the fine art piece. There are two color ways. I saw the Ramones three times, but the show I saw in the fall of 1988 at the Living Room in Providence R.I. was the most intense. The Living Room should have held 500, but in Providence clubs paid off the cops and there were probably 1,000 people in the venue. Jane’s Addiction opened up and raised the energy level. When the Ramones came on the crowd was ready to go nuts. I was near the stage and the crowd surged forward compressing everyone so tightly that I thought my ribs would be crushed. I attended one in LA a few years ago to catch great shows by Iggy and the Stooges and Mission of Burma. ATP has a great concept of asking people or bands to curate the festival. They have asked people like Jim Jarmusch, Matt Groening, Thurston Moore, The Melvins, and for this year’s festival, Portishead. I love Portishead, so I was happy to be asked to create the poster this year. The festival is happening in an amazing building on the boardwalk in Asbury Park NJ, so I incorporated the building into the design of the poster. I’ll be doing murals, an art show, and DJ’ing as part of the ATP festival, so I’m getting to indulge all my passions in a concentrated way this week. Oh, Public Enemy is performing their classic sonic thunderstorm of an album “Fear of a Black Planet”... shake your rump and pump your fist!!!! The Black Keys, Bad Brains, y los poderosos Led Zeppelin!. Después de hacer el pack de Zeppelin Mothership se mostraron tan entusiasmados con el resultado que me pidieron la realización del pack del concert album Celebration Day. He amado a los Zeppelin la mayor parte de mi vida.En el instituto el album Physical Graffiti estuvo en el radiocasette de mi coche 3 meses consecutivos. De todos modos, a la banda le gustó lo que se me ocurrió, por lo explosivo. Así que, en resumen, he creado dos packs de álbum de uno de los más grandes grupos de rock de todos los tiempos. Estoy lanzando una edición de 300 serigrafías firmadas y numeradas de Celebration Day. Habrá una tirada adicional de 50 grabados firmados por la banda, por lo que si eres un gran fan Zepp mantente atento...

La banda de rock and roll más grande del mundo cumplió en 2012 50 años y Shepard Fairey, el ilustrador detrás del famoso cartel “Hope” de Obama, fue el encargado de reinterpretar el legendario logo de la banda para celebrar el medio siglo de rock, drogas y alcohol de sus satánicas majestades.

“Una de las primeras cosas que le pregunte a Mick fue ¿no crees que la lengua tiene que estar?” comenta Shepard en su site sobre la creación del logo.

Trabajé en este proyecto como un fan de los Stones… la lengua fue el elemento central del diseño…

the claim of much of the nation to have “Christian values”. If god tells us to love our neighbor and not to take another human life, where do the assault weapons and piles of ammo fit into these “Christian values”? I personally think assault weapons fall more in the “Satan’s values” category. I’m not religious, and the text in this print is designed more to illustrate the hypocrisy and contrast between “values” and actions in this country than to make a religious statement. Anyway, if you claim to dig god, lay off of satan’s tools... if you don’t believe in god, lay off of satan’s tools! We live in statistically the safest time in human history, so the idea one would need an assault weapon for self defense is ridiculous. These weapons are tools of aggression, not defense. and any sane person not clouded by irrational fear would reach the same conclusion. When I ponder the demand for these killing machines, I see Satan metaphorically at work in the darkest, fear-based impulses of humanity. We can rise above and be better!

I get the 2nd Amendment, but the right to bear arms should NOT BE UNCONDITIONAL. The 2nd Amendment reads: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” It was adopted in 1791 shortly after the revolutionary war in which the colonies had freed themselves from an English monarchy that gave the colonies no representation. The wisdom of the 2nd Amendment was to ensure that a state militia could combat dictatorial oppression. I would assert that putting guns in the hands of a large portion of the civilian population was probably not what the founding fathers had in mind. I’d also say that our nations founders could not have predicted the rise of technology enabling people to acquire weapons capable of shooting dozens of rounds in mere seconds. My concern over very easy access to guns seems

reasonably well founded. I’m perplexed by America’s love of guns. I grew up in South Carolina hunting with my dad and we always had shotguns in the house. My dad put a framed piece in my room that said “A wise hunter once said: all the Pheasants ever bred won’t repay for one man dead”. I was taught to honor and value human life.

Also, the shotguns used for hunting were required by law for duck hunting, to only hold three shells at a time. The idea was that it was excessive to shoot more than three times at a bird. No one needs a gun that shoots 10, 20, 50 rounds. Whatever your feelings are about hunting, you can use a three shot shotgun to defend your home, but guns are easy to misuse. A lot of people claim to own guns for self-defense, but check out the statistics below.

Es profesor emérito de Lingüística en el Instituto Tecnológico de Massachusetts (MIT) y una de las figuras más destacadas de la lingüística del siglo XX, gracias a sus trabajos en teoría lingüística y ciencia cognitiva. Es, asimismo, reconocido por su activismo político, caracterizado por una fuerte crítica del capitalismo contemporáneo y de la política exterior de los Estados Unidos.

Se ha definido políticamente a sí mismo como un anarquista o socialista libertario. Ha sido señalado por el New York Times como “el más importante de los pensadores contemporáneos”.

El elemento primordial del control social es la estrategia de la distracción que consiste en desviar la atención del público de los problemas importantes y de los cambios decididos por las élites políticas y económicas, mediante la técnica del diluvio o inundación de continuas distracciones y de informaciones insignificantes. La estrategia de la distracción es igualmente indispensable para impedir al público interesarse por los conocimientos esenciales, en el área de la ciencia, la economía, la psicología, la neurobiología y la cibernética. “Mantener la Atención del público distraída, lejos de los verdaderos problemas sociales, cautivada por temas sin importancia real.Mantener al público ocupado, ocupado, ocupado, sin ningún tiempo para pensar; de vuelta a granja como los otros animales.”

2. CREAR PROBLEMAS Y DESPUÉS OFRECER SOLUCIONES Este método también es llamado “problema-reacción-solución”. Se crea un problema, una “situación” prevista para causar cierta reacción en el público, a fin de que éste sea el demandante de las medidas que se desea hacer aceptar. Por ejemplo: dejar que se desenvuelva o se intensifique la violencia urbana, organizar atentados sangrientos, a fin de que el público sea el demandante de leyes de seguridad y políticas en perjuicio de la libertad, o crear una crisis económica para hacer aceptar como un mal necesario el retroceso de los derechos sociales y el desmantelamiento de los servicios públicos.

3. LA ESTRATEGIA DE LA GRADUALIDAD Para hacer que se acepte una medida inaceptable, basta aplicarla gradualmente, a cuentagotas, por años consecutivos.

De esta manera se impusieron condiciones socioeconómicas radicalmente nuevas (neoliberalismo) durante las décadas de 1980 y 1990: Estado mínimo, privatizaciones, precariedad, flexibilidad, desempleo en masa, salarios que ya no aseguran ingresos decentes, cambios que hubieran provocado una revolución si hubiesen sido aplicadas de una sola vez.

4. LA ESTRATEGIA DE DIFERIR Otra manera de hacer aceptar una decisión impopular es la de presentarla como “dolorosa y necesaria”, obteniendo la aceptación pública, en el momento, para una aplicación futura. Es más fácil aceptar un sacrificio futuro que un sacrificio inmediato. Primero, porque el esfuerzo no es empleado inmediatamente. Luego, porque el público, la masa, tiene siempre la tendencia a esperar ingenuamente que “todo vaya mejor mañana” y que el sacrificio exigido podrá ser evitado. Esto da más tiempo al público para acostumbrarse a la idea del cambio y de aceptarla con resignación cuando llegue el momento.

En el transcurso de los últimos 50 años, los avances acelerados de la ciencia han generado una creciente brecha entre los conocimientos del público y aquellos poseídos y utilizados por las élites dominantes. Gracias a la biología, la neurobiologia y la psicologia aplicada, el sistema ha disfrutado de un conocimiento avanzado del ser humano, tanto de forma física como psicológicamente.

El sistema ha conseguido conocer mejor al individuo común más de lo que él se conoce a sí mismo. Esto significa que, en la mayoría de los casos, el sistema ejerce un control mayor y un gran poder.

9. REFORZAR LA AUTOCULPABILIDAD Hacer creer al individuo que es solamente él es el culpable de su propia desgracia, por causa de la insuficiencia de su inteligencia, de sus capacidades, o de sus esfuerzos. Así, en lugar de rebelarse contra el sistema económico, el individuo se autodescalifica y se culpa, lo que genera un estado depresivo y por tanto la inhibición de su acción.

. am concerned about the state of free speech and human rights in Turkey right now. My friend, Jeremy Kaplan, alerted me to the severity of the situation, which he has been following closely because his girlfriend is in Turkey at the moment.

Turkey has been one of the more progressive countries in the Middle East for years, but seems to be moving in a more oppressive direction recently. A few years ago I made an image of Ataturk at the request of a Turkish friend. Ataturk was a champion of Turkish Democracy and secular government. I am offering a free download of my Ataturk image as a symbol of democracy and free speech.
